Ika Rere
- Eye of the Fish
- It’s wonderful to see that the dreams of East by West Ferries have come true, with the launching of the Ika Rere, the brand new electric ferry that will ply its way from Wellington to Eastbourne and back. It is a striking design, with the twin prows of the catamaran almost vertical for chopping through the waves of the harbour, and a vibrant acqua / turquoise colour scheme all over, tying in with the branding of Meridian, electric company / weather forecast sponsor.

Building rumours 11: Serepisos Towers?

- The sports pages of the Dominion Post are not the most obvious source of urban development rumours, but there was an interesting titbit tucked away in Saturday's profile of Terry Serepisos, property tycoon, man-about-town and brand new owner of the Wellington Bees/Southerlies/Fever/Whatever. Among the usual breathless enumeration of the clothes, the cars and the parties, there was a reference to his desire to leave a legacy in Wellington, beyond his recent excursions into sports sponsorship. He wants to build Wellington's tallest building.

Yan pushes innovation to protect economy

- Mayoral candidate Jack Yan believes his policies on creativity and innovation are needed more than ever in light of the recent Fonterra disaster and has released a statement and a new video (speaking in English, te Reo, French and Cantonese, no sign language sadly) highlighting the need for the next mayor to be able to bridge cultures at a global level: Wellington’s innovation can be a safety net when Fonterra-level scares hit If mayors aren’t part of this dialogue, talking to the top 40 cities in the world and opening doors for our exporters, then we’re going to be affected terribly when our nation brand is damaged,’ he says. ‘We have seen real evidence of this week.’ ‘In the meantime, Wellington is the home of companies like Weta and Xero, along with numerous independents¬ has a reputation that can stand head and shoulders above this scandal.’ Mr Yan, who issued his manifesto for the Wellington mayoral election in April, months before his opponents, has remained on message throughout about the need for Wellington to become a global hub for innovation and identifying export champions. Given Wellington’s urban base, those champions were likely to be outside the primary industries. ‘New Zealand is a primary products’ nation and I recognize the sector’s importance. However, this scare shows just why it’s important for cities to back up national economic activity and to have strong brands themselves.’ ‘Wellington is in an enviable place to deliver greater innovation, with high-growth firms and strong creativity, which will be more rigorously grown if I am elected,’ he says. Mr Yan has authored books on branding and has practised in the area since the 1980s. His work at the Swedish branding think-tank, the Medinge Group, has seen him lead the way on international brand thinking, making him better equipped to develop a proper city brand, get Wellington businesses exporting, and being an advocate for them globally. He agrees with earlier commentators, including Prime Minister John Key, that the scare has harmed New Zealand’s national brand. As he predicted in his 2010 and 2013 campaigns, strong city brands will have to come to the fore to promote economic activity in export markets. Mr Yan says, ‘There is a certain level of pride in saying something comes from Wellington, but we haven’t recognized this properly. We have export earners here and by promoting a diverse economy, we can ensure that we have more of a safety net when scandals in our primary sector occur. ‘I have long been concerned since the days of the “New Zealand Way” brand in the 1990s that we were missing the mark on promoting our nation. Even then, I was outspoken on saying that the likes of Karen Walker and Tait were being excluded. Yet Kiwi innovation is unique: it comes from a sense of isolation and independence,’ he recalls. ‘We have export markets criticizing our “100 Per Cent Pure” campaign again. I have to say we deserve every criticism and it is time for cities to step up.’ As they say, never let a serious crisis go to waste. You can watch here.

- A review of selected works on offer in PA2024. Each year The Performance Arcade offers a kaleidoscopic spatial collage of performance-related events and event-based arts practices. Now in its 14th annual iteration, its site, coordinated by its founder-director Sam Trubridge along with a highly skilled and attentive team, has been both well travelled, and reconfigured many times, and the echoes of many past performances may be easily recalled if you have previously visited or participated. A kind of mirror image of characteristically large-scale public gallery exhibitions, most often centered around major retrospectives and material installations of many discrete works, the works on view in the Arcade bring a contingency, a fleeting “Did I just see that?” or “What was that meant to be?” lightness at the best of times.

Te Papa celebrates 25 years with new strategy

- On Tuesday 14 February, Te Papa celebrates 25 years since opening with a new Rautaki | Strategy to take it forward into the future. The museum’s co-leaders, Kaihautū | Māori Co-leader Arapata Hakiwai and Tumu Whakarae | Chief Executive Courtney Johnston, and its Board led by Dame Fran Wilde have embraced a new vision for Te Papa to carry it forward for the next 25 years and beyond. By 14 February 2023, Te Papa will have welcomed more than 34 million visitors since opening. It cares for more than two million items, from ancient fossils to digital artworks, from tiny aphids to ocean-going waka. It consistently rates as one of the world’s best museums, and its approach to storytelling and indigenous knowledge remains a global model.

HEAPS of new stuff instore – tee shirts, posters, DVDs, NOT TO MENTION some fantastic new LPs and CDs from (here we go)… Taylor Swift (a real return to form!), Lloyd Cole, Thom Yorke, Lizzo, Ride, Peter Perrett, Purple Pilgrims, PP Arnold, Lana Del Rey… we are also digging the latest Ace Records compilation of cheery 90’s hip hop entitled “The Daisy Age”, featuring De La Soul, Brand Nubian, Queen Latifah, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and heaps more – recommended!! We have also just taken delivery of EIGHT(!!!) boxes of terrific new LPs from the US, featuring many deleted and hard-to-find titles from a-Ha, Roy Ayers, The Beach Boys, Nine Inch Nails, King Crimson, Fugazi, The Proclaimers, Rammstein, , REM, Parquet Courts, Public Enemy, Lou Reed, Elton John, The Jesus & Mary Chain… I could go on, but perhaps best if you come and take a look for yourself – will have them out by the weekend! - <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Anthropology – The science dealing with the origins, physical and cultural development, biological characteristics, and social customs and beliefs of humankind. Artists Bio V is a multi disciplinary creative, specialising in digital and large scale surrealist imagery. Published in VICE in 2018, her work largely discusses the construction of identity and how society impacts that. Often touching on subjects around mental health and the connectedness of human beings. Her works seeks to act as an anthropological study of humankind through imagery. "Art has an amazing ability to convey a message across cultures, race, social economic groups... it speaks without words and unites like nothing else can" V has worked with the New Zealand Police and other organisations such as Woman's Refuge, presenting on education around Mental Health Awareness and Family Harm Reduction. The last year has seen her speak at Pecha Kucha, whilst also working with multiple councils painting murals and teaching a course at Hastings Girls High School. She was a featured artist in the Auckland Festival of Photography, painted the festival circuit, and has showcased her work nationally at places such as Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne.

Introducing for your diaries the Urban Dreams Monthly Tuesday lunchtime programme for March to May 2018 at Toi Poneke. We've got a great set of guests, across artforms: Leo Gene Peters, Julian Priest, Sacha Copland, Kerry Ann Lee and our mayor Justin Lester. We're always aware of the holes in knowledge between artforms even in a small city, so read on for more details on these strong artists. First gathering: next Tuesday March 13. An opportunity for artists or all kinds to network and discuss ideas working in new ways in Wellington city. Tuesdays 12.30-2pm March 13: On being embedded. Working with other industries and groups - what is the potential for residences or having artists embedded in different spaces in the city? We talk with two artists who have been working in work residencies and have an interest in how their work can interact in new ways through this: theatremaker Leo Gene Peters, and visual artist Julian Priest. Leo Gene Peters is a theatre director and maker and founder of A Slightly Isolated Dog who have been creating celebrated devised work since 2005. “We’re trying to have a conversation with the public about what matters to each of us… and through that conversation we’ll create performance work. The goal is to find new and different ways to use live performance, conversation, virtual platforms, social media (and other things) to create a space where we can meet and reflect together. A space where we can discuss important questions in our lives that we normally don’t talk about with strangers.” A Slightly Isolated Dog are currently in residence at Creative HQ. who aim to help develop and grow businesses in Wellington through “nourishing entrepreneurial talent and driving innovation.” Julian Priest is an artist working with participatory and technological forms and recent work explores relationships to different infrastructures including time, energy, security, health and communications. In 2017 Julian created the Citizen Water Map Lab with Letting Space as part of the Common Ground Public Art Festival where Hutt City residents and community groups were invited to collect ground water and bring it to the lab and test it with data represented in an illuminated installation that produced a map of local water quality. Julian was co-founder of early wireless freenetwork community Consume.net in London. He became an advocate for the freenetworking movement and has pursued wireless networking as a theme in fields of arts, development, and policy. Julian is currently undertaking a residency at the Thomas King observatory Wellington (supported by the Wellington Museums Trust), an old 1912 observatory which is part of the Carter Observatory complex. April 17: On the art of keeping in business. Sasha Copland and Kerry Ann Lee. The realities of the business of being an independent artist. We introduce two artists both interested in working in a variety of different ways with the public and communities. Kerry Ann Lee is a celebrated visual artist, designer and educator who uses hand-made processes and socially-engaged projects to explore hybrid identities and histories of migration. She creates installation, publication and image-based work and has a long practice in independent artists’ publishing. Sacha Copland is a dancer, choreographer and the Artistic Director of Java Dance Theatre. As she told The Big Idea here she believes in the power of dance to build empathy and her works aim to permeate and dissolve the distance between people by creating dance that “clambers into your senses and gets underneath your fingernails.” Founded in 2003 Java is a professional dance company that presents dance theatre nationally and internationally often working in site specific locations, or creating work around specific themes that engage new audiences. May 8: On creating creative capital. Mayor Justin Lester A discussion with our mayor who holds the arts and culture portfolio on what is needed to take our creative scene to the next level. - ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON presents FIREBIRD SATURDAY 13 MAY, 2017, 7:30PM MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE, WELLINGTON Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No 1 in C Major — John Elmsly Violin Concerto (Orchestra Wellington Composer in Residence) — Igor Stravinsky The Firebird (Complete Ballet Score) — Marc Taddei, Conductor Jun Hong Loh, Violin (Grand Prize Winner, Gisborne International Music Competition 2015) Orchestra Wellington opens its concert season with two works that welcome the arrival of young genius upon the world stage. Stravinsky had barely finished his studies when the great impresario of the Ballets Russes, Diaghilev, recognised his talent and commissioned the work that would make him world famous: the Firebird. Music Director Marc Taddei calls the Firebird a fantastically imaginative blend. “Stravinsky takes the folk music of Russia and mixes it with the exotic orchestration of his teacher, Rimsky Korsakov, and the harmonic language of the great Impressionists. If one score deserves to be called ‘magical’, it’s this one. It’s a masterpiece!” Taddei says he is thrilled to present the music for the full ballet. “Normally in a concert performance, the Firebird is heard in shortened suites,” Taddei says. “The full score is rarely heard, and it is a revelation,” he says. Taddei decided to pair the Firebird with Beethoven’s First Symphony. “I like the idea of hearing how two young geniuses announced their voice to the world,” he says. The First Symphony shows Beethoven’s mastery of the symphonic form developed by his teacher Haydn, and then takes a confident step beyond that into the musical territory that he would one day revolutionise. To complete the programme, the Orchestra presents the world premiere performance of one of New Zealand’s great senior composers - John Elmsly. Elmsly’s Violin Concerto will feature the Singaporean violinist Jun Hong Loh, winner of the 2015 Gisborne International Music Competition. Characterful medium density housing!

- Who else is having conversations where someone goes “ooh but it’s all leaky soulless apartments, we don’t want that”? Here’s a feast for your eyes and balm for your worried soul Welcome to Talk Wellington’s random collection of neat medium-density examples to cheer you up, to show your friends, to tell the council you want … and to inspire density skeptics (presuming they’re in good faith, not just being awful). (Images’ links are in the image, caption or the text – click for more.) Enjoy! Characterful, “old”… medium density Montréal has a LOT of medium density residential neighbourhoods. They’re super liveable and beloved, and they are home to numbers of people that would sort out many of Wellington’s classic woes. Here’s some pretty historic-y medium density which has actual awesome neighbourhood vitality and character by the bucketload, for everyone. Medium density can be… no more than two storeys, with lots of mixed use and features like shop-top housing! No offence, Mt Vic / Khandallah / Thorndon / Woburn, but your neighbourhoods can’t hold a candle to the Castro for real liveable character, not just visual character. So leafy! Apartments you rent short-term: this is the Garden Wing of Singapore’s Shangri-La Hotel. It was built in the 1970s! Lush az. This is all open air How ’bout indigenous character! The stunning medium-density Utukoia replaces two detached homes on traditional quarter-acre sections with 14 new terrace homes (53 bedrooms total), communal facilities and a range of private, shared and public spaces. Phwoar. Check out the Auckland Māori Design Hub for more delicious stuff There are some smart folks stimulating Māori design and innovation at the Āpōpō accelerator right here in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, run by the Indigenous Design and Innovation Aotearoa / IDIA team. How about some modern character? Check out the beautiful high density of the Urban Habitat Collective, coming soon right in Newtown: Or the beautiful CoHaus (read their amazing story here) Even ol’ Kiwibuild is finally doing lovely stuff in Onehunga: How about the spaces in between the housing? Density done well brings your laneways to life as a part of people’s backyards, as in Queensland… Go large We really need comprehensive, multi-block developments to sort out whole areas of our cities. You can do ’em on something that’s underused space like… a golf course? Or even as a regeneration of… ooh, maybe a large area of detached housing, hello Kāinga Ora. So check out this thread on Vancouver’s Regent Park development. Hello #densitydonewell: a big uplift in density is helping fund all sorts of fantastic public amenities for the residents of the varied and accessible apartments: green space, schools, lovely public realm, community gardens, people-friendly street grid… That fourfold increase in density has helped to pay for generous public realm and community facilities including parks, athletic grounds, and an amazing aquatic centre #torontotweets #densitydonewell #citiesforall pic.twitter.com/cCy2dYq6V5 — Stuart (@HoughtonSd) September 11, 2018 Be still, our beating hearts…. And finally… DensityNOTdonewell While we tend to agree with Bernard Hickey that the battle over densifying suburbs is the battle of our generation, there’s plenty of reasonable property-owning folks who are genuinely, good-faith worried. They’re worried that crappy, ugly things will be built – and are vulnerable to being scaremongered by wild claims about housing values (hat tip Property Investors Federation). And let’s be honest: NZ has strong historical form in doing medium density badly – especially badly in construction, which means bad financially for those who bought in them. The cars seem to have the best of this bargain… And bad design is far from history: there’s still plenty of crap designs out there, thanks to our unfamiliarity with good-quality medium density. Here’s one example of rubbish medium density that appears to deny its residents most of the benefits of density done well like access to green space and social connection. So let’s also be clear: nobody wants crap design or construction, and we absolutely don’t have to accept it “because housing crisis”. So let’s get more and more people on the bandwagon for good medium density, #densitydonewell! What other examples of great (or grotty) medium density do you know? How do they make you feel and why?

- SumOfUs/Creative Commons Prof Jane Kelsey, in her critique of the still-secret Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (formerly the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement [TPPA]) notes in The Spinoff: The most crucial area of the TPPA that has not received enough attention is the novel chapter on electronic commerce—basically, a set of rules that will cement the oligopoly of Big Tech for the indefinite future, allowing them to hold data offshore subject to the privacy and security laws of the country hosting the server, or not to disclose source codes, preventing effective scrutiny of anti-competitive or discriminatory practices. Other rules say offshore service providers don’t need to have a presence inside the country, thus undermining tax, consumer protection and labour laws, and governments can’t require locally established firms to use local content or services. If this new government is as digitally illiterate as the previous one, then we are in some serious trouble. I’m all for free trade but not at the expense of my own country’s interests, or at the expense of real competition, and the Green Party’s position (I assume in part operating out of caution due to the opaqueness of the negotiations) is understandable. Protecting a partly corrupt oligopoly is dangerous territory in a century that will rely more heavily on digital commerce. While there may be some valid IP reasons to protect source code, these need to be revealed in legal proceedings if it came to that—and one hopes there are provisions for dispute settlement that can lift the veil. But we don’t really know just how revised those dispute settlement procedures are. Let’s hope that Labour’s earlier stated position on this will hold. Google has already found itself in trouble for anticompetitive and discriminatory practices in Europe, and if observations over the last decade count for anything, it’s that they’ll stop at nothing to try it on. Are we giving them a free ride now? Despite Prof Kelsey’s concerns, I can accept that parties need not have a presence within a nation or be compelled to use local content or services. But the level of tax avoidance exhibited by Google, Facebook, Apple et al is staggering, and one hopes that our new government won’t bend over quite as easily. (While I realize the US isn’t part of this agreement, remember that big firms have subsidiaries in signatory countries through which they operate, and earlier trade agreements have shown just how they have taken on governments.) She claims that the technology minister, the Hon Clare Curran, has no information on the ecommerce chapter’s analysis—and if she doesn’t have it, then what are we signing up to? However, Labour’s inability to be transparent—something they criticized the previous government on—is a weak point after a generally favourable start to 2018. The Leader of the Opposition is right to call the government out on this when his comment was sought: basically, they were tough on us when we were in government, so we hope they’ll live up to their own standards. Right now, it doesn’t look like it. I suspect Kelsey is now the National Party fan’s best friend after being vilified for years. Bit like when Nicky Hager (whom one very respected MP in the last Labour government called a right-wing conspiracy theorist) wrote Seeds of Distrust. And the solutions that Kelsey proposes are so simple and elegant that it’s daft they weren’t followed, since they are consistent with the Labour brand. I know, trade agreements can stay confidential at this stage and this isn’t unprecedented. But that’s not what Labour said it wanted. At least these suggestions would have shown some consistency with Labour’s previous positions, and given some assurance that it’s in charge. What should a Labour-led government have done differently? First, it should have commissioned the revised independent economic assessment and health impact analyses it called for in opposition. Second, it should have shown a political backbone, like the Canadian government that also inherited the deal. Canada played hardball and successful demanded side-letters to alter its obligations relating to investment and auto-parts. Not great, but something. New Zealand should have demanded similar side-letters excluding it from ISDS as a pre-requisite for continued participation. Third, it should have sought the suspension of the UPOV 1991 obligation, which has serious Treaty implications, and engaged with Māori to strengthen the Treaty of Waitangi exception, as the Waitangi Tribunal advised. Fourth, it should have withdrawn its agreement to the secrecy pact. I once joked that National and Labour were basically the same, plus or minus 10 per cent. On days like this, I wonder if I was right.

2020 Port Nicholson Regatta – You Were Here!

- What a sensational Port Nicholson Regatta! With over 170 Sailors and 30 boats on the water, including over half a dozen visiting boats with 4 Sports Boats from Auckland, RPNYC delivered an event members can be proud of! The Port Nicholson Regatta opened with the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race on Thursday, followed by a convivial Regatta Dinner and presentations to Britannia Sea Scouts, Wellington Free Ambulance, and Live Ocean. It provided opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic support from our sponsors who help make things better and easier: Yamaha, Crombie Lockwood, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Mt Gay, Steinlager, North Sails, Burnsco, Pivotal Print, Barton Marine, Havana, Mevo, Chaffers Marina, and Whittaker’s. The event delivered three days of intensive and rewarding regatta racing in perfect weather. Impeccable race management led by John and Linda Parrish, was ably supported by our support crews and assistants. Notably Marg McVeagh, Janine Small, Julie Bate, Carole Inkster, Phil Taylor, Mel Zytecka and Ashley Owers who were out on the water for the duration of the event. Not forgetting Kim McMorran of course, for our brand new marks. After the relentless start sequence to get 44 races away in 4 divisions over three days (plus the 8 starts in the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race), there was silverware to award. A tale of two cities + campaigns

- With the Greens’ announcing that they’re going all in for the Dunedin council elections it begs the question – why aren’t they doing the same in Wellington? Contrast the cone of silence that’s effectively been dropped in Wellington with the concerted push supporting Aaron Hawkin’s bid for the Dunedin City mayoralty and other council seats (campaign launches, media releases, websites, party resources, party leader support and endorsement, fundraising and volunteer recruitment), you have to wonder. Is it because the Greens have put Celia Wade-Brown at arms distance since she supported outsourcing of council services and voted against fellow Green Councillor, Iona Pannett? Or is it that the Greens think she’s bad for their brand as the right-wing Whale Oil claims? Or does Celia think she can do it without them? Wellington should be the jewel in the Greens’ local government crown. They have the mayoralty and other elected members and sympathizers, and like Dunedin, Wellington continues to deliver some of its highest amounts of party votes in general elections. But so far we haven’t seen any sign that the Greens see it that way and their slate of potential new candidates doesn’t really give that impression either. Rumours are also circulating her 2010 campaign manager Kent Duston has either been fired or has decided to quit, and now her campaign team isn’t much wider than her husband, Alastair. This would be a great shame as Kent proved to be an incredibly astute and effective political operator and his work probably pushed Celia over the line. How Celia responds to John Morrison’s recent entry into the mayoral race and enviable headlines in the past week will be critical. She needs to kick-start her campaign (and fix her website, below) soon. Celia defeated Kerry Prendergast because her campaign took the initiative, caught the incumbent off-guard, fronted footed issues, and had strong grassroots support and volunteer networks. Prendergast on the other hand looked complacent, barely made an effort to campaign, and lacked any real campaign apparatus. Incumbency will be Celia’s biggest strength, but with only 112 days until ballot papers start arriving in letterboxes I fear Celia is falling to the same traps her predecessor did. Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

Image: Ebony Lamb As the residential property market escalates, and as increasing numbers move into city apartments, a need for inner city spaces for exchange and community is growing. With significant growth in commercial property left vacant since Covid-19 hit, the programme Urban Dream Brokerage is relaunching in Wellington to provide vital spaces for people to exchange, meet and help the city develop. Following its first run between 2012 and 2018 in response to the Global Financial Crisis, creative space programme Urban Dream Brokerage (UDB) has been relaunched funded by the Wellington City Council Tipu Toa: Build Back Better / City Recovery fund. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Image: Ebony Lamb The relaunch is spurred by a rise in unoccupied property around Wellington city due to the pandemic, and the need to create shared public spaces and experiences in a central city whose population is growing fast. The programme continues to run in Dunedin and has previously run in Porirua and Masterton. After the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake many buildings were taken off the Wellington market for strengthening, meaning fewer spaces could be used. Now property owners are embracing the renewed opportunity to enrich the city with artist and community occupied spaces. “We have a commitment to a city that feels good for the most vulnerable and gives space to the most generous. We see ourselves as intentionally curating projects that will provoke change, for example decarbonising and indigenising the city,” says UDB co-founder Sophie Jerram. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Victoria Singh from The Waiting Room Image: Ebony Lamb “Other cities across the world including Brussels and Barcelona are taxing buildings that are vacant for more than three months, providing incentives to keep buildings occupied, something that could work well when property is surging in value.” The aim of the brokerage is not just to help restore the city to pre-pandemic levels and types of activity, but to help create a new and better place where art acts as a bridge that welcomes all comers. UDB co-founder Mark Amery makes a case for culture providing a vital sense of place and meaning for city dwellers that leads to economic development. “A cultural recovery in Wellington is more than about attracting visitors through events. Culture is fundamental to our wellbeing and a sense of ownership of the city for those who live here. Image: Ebony Lamb Wellington City Council is supporting the brokerage to re-enliven the city in 2021 with activities, including support for the performance programme The City as a Theatre and a rejuvenated Cubadupa. UDB is produced by Maverick Creative, managed by dynamic Political Cutz performer Jason Muir with Linda Lee from Shared Lines Collaborative. Muir is already visiting property owners to find homes for projects. “UDB rules! My creative practice emerged from Urban Dream Brokerage so now I feel proud to manage the project and look forward to enabling others on their journey, to share their dreams with the people of Wellington,” says Muir. Urban Dream Brokerage was established in 2012 by Sophie Jerram and Mark Amery as part of their Letting Space entity under the umbrella of Wellington Independent Arts Trust. UDB found spaces around New Zealand for over 120 creative projects, some short and some long term with more than 40 property owners, allowing the artists’ work to infuse energy into the properties while new tenants were found. Some projects continue in the properties where they started - Come Sew With Me in Masterton’s Queen Elizabeth Park is celebrating this month its third anniversary, while others like Coliberate a ‘mental health gym’ are now successful innovative businesses. Slow Boat Christmas/ New Year 2025

- Well, crikey - somehow, we have nearly made it to the end of another year at the proverbial rock'n'roll coalface - the 40th Anniversary of our founder, 'The Coach', Dennis O'Brien opening the store way back in 1985 (which we commemorated with some handsome bright yellow tee shirts and totes bearing his youthful mug!) Every year brings with it fresh challenges in seeking to keep the store relevant in a wildly changing entertainment and retail landscape, and we are, as ever, immensely grateful to you all for sticking with us, shopping with us, engaging with our Instagram and Facebook platforms, and sharing your energy and enthusiasm for music and movies, and for physical media, and for everything inbetween. We have seen your enthusiasm for vinyl remain undiminished, along with a soaring demand for CDs (hell, they are cheaper now than they were when they were introduced some 40 years ago, at the store's inception, when we thought they seemed like a bit of a fad...!) We have hosted some terrific in-store events, including Record Store Day 2025 (with instore performances from Warm Regards and Fazerdaze), The Phoenix Foundation's "Pegasus" vinyl release launch (a few dewy eyes at that one!), an impromptu instore performance from Evan Dando, plus listening parties for The Beths' "Straight Line Was A Lie" and most recently, Hayley Williams' "Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party" - all wonderful occasions that felt joyful, and like celebrations, so a great big SB shoutout to all who made those extraordinary events happen, and all who attended. Would also like to send big Slow Boat love to the friends and family of some dear people we lost this year - including the indomitable Ms Lorraine Barry, dear friend and much loved supporter of the store; you are sorely missed and hugely appreciated for all you have done for the NZ music landscape. So, without getting too sappy and sentimental, let's just conclude by saying - we are here for you, music lovers; Slow Boat will be open every day over the holiday period, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years' Day - we will, however, be operating on a reduced hours schedule to give here everyone a chance to recover from a hectic Festive season; count on hours along the lines of 11am-4pm for the weeks immediately following Xmas... Poetry success Congratulations to Seb MacCaulay (Year 12), for being shortlisted as a finalist in the National Secondary Schools Poetry Competition. He received prizes from the New Zealand Book Council and Sport, as well as $100 and the opportunity to attend a masterclass at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University last weekend. Seb’s poem is included below: Old man I’m sitting and I watch the old man from the street rest and unfurl from his linen a pack of Dunhills. He twists off the cellophane and eyes his catch with that vintage gleam of noon-stripped old lowlifes, naked, howling at their cigarette moons. Cars and their drivers blur on by, each turning their heads as if to say yes man, light that cigarette for all you’re worth. Yes, man lights it. Draws each drag out long like a bones player shifting keys. He exhales each time only a whisper of thin smoke-suns that twist, convulse mid-air. I have a moment when I think of my father and I driving along an afternoon’s length of country road; we could’ve been both fifteen naive and I feel as if right here and now I’ll weep watching this old new nomad smoke, pulling our car breakneck along the asphalt, filling the valleys and valleys and valleys, hauling us through them, here to someplace to every place, maybe, most likely, somewhere unideal, where infants are born dead but still live. My father and I, our cities become flame, the skyscrapers strip the blue skies, haul from the seas an urgent thunderstorm now upon us all and still. The old man smokes. Almost at the filter now. Watching our cars roll on by. Looking with those eyes at each and every person as if to say yes man, go on your way, go on your way. IYNT Winners, Minsk, 2019 WHS students Ryan Bright and Lydia Acton were part of the winning NZ team at the 2019 International Young Naturalists’ Tournament. Lydia was the team captain, having also competed in the 2018 tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ryan reported his solution to problem 7, “Burning Glass” in the final against Croatia and Switzerland. He scored the highest score in the final, which was won by NZ with 47.9 points, to Croatia’s 45.9 and Switzerland’s 45.6. The team’s achievements have been widely recognised, including this tweet from the National Science advisor! Sports Underwater Hockey HUGE congratulations go out to all our Underwater Hockey teams for their fantastic season this year. Our Junior Open A team won bronze medals in Friday night’s CSW Premier finals, defeating Hutt Valley High School 6-2 in their playoff game. The boys were hoping for better after entering the playoffs in second place, however they suffered a shock 3-0 loss to Scots College in their semi final. The bronze medal is still a massive achievement, and the first medal won by a WHS team for as long as Murray Chisholm can remember. This team and our Senior Girls team will contest the national championships in Wellington at WRAC from September 6th-8th. WHS may have lost the game 3 – 0 but it was an evenly matched contest and our team benefited from the opportunity to take on Tararua College.

- CubaDupa Returns to the Streets with a Beautiful Disruption Wellington’s favourite neighbourhood comes alive with colour, art, music, parades, dance, food, and thousands of creative people the weekend of 28-29 March 2020 WELLINGTON, NZ — All of New Zealand is invited to celebrate the country’s most vibrant and creative street festival, CubaDupa, disrupting the heart of Wellington on 28 and 29 March 2020. The multi-arts programme returns to the streets in a big and beautiful way—with a dozen stages, over 100 food stalls, special creative zones, 100,000 friends and neighbours, and one beautiful disruption after the other. “Our iconoclastic Te Aro neighbourhood will be filled with sights and sounds, parades and drum beats, street installations and public art”, says Festival Director Gerry Paul, who has programmed the most ambitious CubaDupa ever. “And at the heart of it all, ready to transcend the ordinary, are over 1500 artists and performers from the region and around the world”. Music is the very core of CubaDupa, and there will be no shortage of aural disruption in 2020. The festival will present a diverse free live music programme showcasing almost every genre. VNZMA winner Troy Kingi brings his irresistible galactic funk, alongside rising Hip Hop star JessB. Contemporary Canadian folk group The East Pointers join the party with their high-energy take on the Celtic tradition. Making the trip from across the ditch are Bullhorn, an epic 10-piece brass ensemble fronted by the extraordinary rapper Roman MC. Local groove masters Dr Reknaw and emerging New Zealand rockers H4lf Cast add their grooves to the weekend celebration. Musicians, sound experiences, and immersive electronic wizardry become a cornerstone of the 2020 CubaDupa with the festival’s most ambitious project ever, Cubasonic. The mass musical interruption—conceived by New Zealand’s leading composer John Psathas—involves nearly 500 musicians lining the street, twelve conductors above the crowd, a custom-made overhead sound system, and a locally-invented Tesla coil synthesiser known as Chime Red. Defying words, Cubasonic will be presented once each day—uniting the entire festival site with a ten-minute musicalhappening unlike anything ever attempted in New Zealand. The project is a true partnership of creative community, generously supported by Creative New Zealand and involving Orchestra Wellington, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, The Nudge, Boat and a mass of Batucada drummers. “CubaDupa is one of Wellington’s primary lightning rods, generating and releasing a massive, positive energy charge into the city every year,” says Psathas. “Festivals offer unique opportunities for ambitious ideas. At their best they give us experiences we never forget, experiences that exceed our expectations both in the witnessing of art and in the moments of massed connection that sneak up and take us by surprise. Cubasonic, played throughout the heart of Cuba Street, will be vast, epic, and monumental.” The 2020 musical acts will be presented across twelve stages, including the brand new Radio Active Upper Cuba SoundSphere, Wellington Airport Swan Lane, the Garage Project Wild Workshop stage, and a Glover Park zone designed in partnership with Massey University’s College of Creative Arts. “Festival audiences can experience an abundance of music, dance, street theatre and art activations taking place throughout our Te Aro precinct” says Paul. “After finding your groove with JessB or Bullhorn, join The Ping Pong Party People in a wildly creative table tennis championship, visit Shabby Salon for a drop-dead gorgeous makeover, then jump into the Weddings-and-Funerals installation.” Another new element making its debut at the 2020 CubaDupa is the Mammoth Circus Tent in the Wilson Carpark on Ghuznee St. The bold and colourful venue will host energetic performances and workshops for all ages by day, and transform into a saucy cabaret show by night. “It’s part of our desire to grow the festival in new ways, add interesting platforms, and showcase even more artistry and performers from all around the world” says Paul. “Families will experience circus shows by fabulous acts like COLOSSAL Productions, 3 Speed Crunch Box or Seven Deadly Stunts during the day, and then the older crowd can enjoy comedy and more provocative cabaret after dark”. A theme running through much of the 2020 CubaDupa programme is Intergalactic Madness—alien visitors, strange messages, and wondrous disruptions from other worlds. Big Nazo will invade from Rhode Island, with generous support from the Embassy of the United States of America, for their debut visit to New Zealand. The outlandish collective of visual artists, puppet performers and costumed musicians will bring their alien creatures to the streets and stages of CubaDupa. Closer to home, Alien Junk Monsters add their psychedelic recycled trash costumes—and a few new otherworldly offspring. And for the first time ever CubaDupa will play host to BodyPalooza, a new national body paint competition featuring over 30 artists and models painted as alien visitors. “There’s an eclectic and eye-opening experience for everyone at CubaDupa, because it’s a fearless celebration of who we are as a diverse and creative city, and what we have in this iconic neighbourhood”, says Eric Holowacz, CEO of Creative Capital Arts Trust. “Whether you are into new bands, raucous parades, or the search for extraterrestrial life, CubaDupa has it. I love it, because the weekend is always a highlight of the summertime, and an immersion in culture, creativity, and community.” For culinary disruptions that satisfy any appetite, the Moore Wilson’s Street Feast returns to CubaDupa, with over 100 food stalls and a diverse range of local vendors and culinary experiences. “CubaDupa is going to be the highlight of our upcoming tour in New Zealand”, says Koady Chaisson, of Canadian contemporary indie folk music trio The East Pointers. “We love playing in New Zealand, as there are a lot of similarities to our home in Prince Edward Island, but we don’t have anything like CubaDupa. This year we expect all year 9 and 10 students to compete. In years 11 to 13 the event will only be for competitors, peer supporters and those running stalls. All other students in years 11 to 13 will have a Home Learning Day. Teachers will talk to students about their expectations for the day, and we encourage students to make good use of their time if they are not attending the athletics. Students need to make their way to Newtown Park and have their name marked on the roll by 8.45am. The athletics programme will start at 8.45am with the 1500m. Those competing in the 1500m need to be at the track at 8.30am to get ready. The day should conclude by 3.30pm. Entries for all events are taken on the day and students are encouraged to participate actively and to support their whānau group by wearing their colours: Riley – red; Kelly – yellow; Howell – green; Royal – blue. We look forward to seeing who our top athletes will be. These students will go on to represent WHS at the Western Zone Athletics Championships on Wednesday 6 March. Please note that although bikes, skateboards and scooters can be used as transport to the park, they must not be ridden inside Newtown Park at all. Shoes and appropriate attire must be worn whilst competing. Students should bring water, wear a hat and have sunscreen. Students should bring food for the day and may like to bring cash to purchase food from stalls run by senior students. Newtown Park is an all-weather track, however, should we need to cancel the event, we will communicate this through the WHS website, school app, Facebook and Twitter. What’s happening? Ecology Trip July 2020 In 2020 WHS hopes to take a small number of students who will be at least 16 years old to the small island of Dominica. The aim will be to learn about ecology techniques both on land and in the sea. Click here for further information. Please note the rock canyoning is not part of this trip. For further information, contact Joanne Lowe or come to the information evening with Dr Tim Coles, the founder of Operation Wallacea, on Monday 25 February at 6pm in the school library. (Please note the meeting has been changed from Wednesday February 27). After school Kimono experience Students learning Japanese had the opportunity to experience wearing kimono, traditional Japanese wear, after school on Tuesday. Licensed kimono instructor, Colleen Esler, ran the workshop for interested students. Students learnt important tips including left goes over right (the reverse is reserved for burial), before being dressed in their choice of formal or ‘street style’ kimono. Library lunchtime lecture Jim Inglis, Senior Business Manager Genetics, Pamu, gave a fascinating talk to staff and senior students in the Library yesterday in the first Library Lunchtime Lecture for 2019. He spoke on genetics in livestock systems in NZ and fielded a range of considered questions from students keen to better understand the biological and social Implication of CRISPR. CRISPR is a new gene editing technique that cuts and repairs genes with astonishing accuracy and precision. Senior Biology students discovered which biotechnologies are legally permitted for use in New Zealand and, perhaps more importantly, discovered those we are not yet using and why this is so. Sincere thanks to Jim Inglis and the Library Staff for this golden opportunity to discover more about the possibilities and potential problems with CRISPR and other new biotechnologies in Aotearoa New Zealand. CRISPR research at VUW Wellington High School students took a lunchtime library research trip to Victoria University this week. Our students found key texts on CRISPR, investigated the latest scientific journals and accessed the best online biological databases in the scientific world. Students heard how CRISPR and gene editing techniques are being used here in Aotearoa New Zealand to fight cancer, investigate gene mutations and repair metabolic pathways blighted by inherited mistakes in gene coding. Students were left considering the possibilities for possum control and even eradication with gene driven technologies, plus the potential for the control of disease causing mosquitoes and ticks in Australia and America. We had a wonderful whistle stop tour of the library’s rich resources and will return to visit the laboratories and lecture rooms of our closest university and research institute in coming weeks. Thanks to the VUW Science Librarians and Thom Adams (Engagement Coordinator), from the Faculty of Science. Sports Preseason training update Since term began, preseason training has been underway in Basketball, Netball, Rugby and Dragonboating. In this time a lot of hard work has been done and, as we progress towards the winter season, this will only continue to intensify. Everyone involved in preseason training understands that doing the hard work now will help us reap the rewards later on. Not only that, having invested heavily now, we will enjoy the challenge of games and matches much more too.
