    • An injury-plagued Slapperz journeyed to Petone Memorial 4 to take on the Armani's. With Steve-O and Barts on the sideline nursing aches and pains, we were all hoping for an injury free match. No luck there, I'm afraid, with Gazz limping off after just 1 minute with a nasty looking recurrence of his injury. Fortunately, Striker Barts gallantly came to the rescue and played the remaining 89 minutes up front.

    • And so, with a big hello to all the ReMax twitterers out there receiving our feed, we bring you the latest incarnation of the site where the Tattoo Museum was in Abel Smith St - yes, it is now proposed to be the Tattoo Apartment site. Interestingly, it is to be just 4 stories tall - way below the 9 stories that the tacky Orange apartments have achieved just across the street (next to the Southern Cross).

• • 60 years of Wellington Trolley Buses

    • Strictly speaking, Wellington's first trolley bus was a single 20 kW one from 1924 which ran along the Hutt Road for a while. However, the main fleet of trolley buses began in 1949 with the arrival of 10 Crossley/Metropolitan Vickers 78 kW examples (another 4 of this model also went to New Plymouth). The first route they were used on was was Oriental Bay where they shared the road with trams for 15 months.

We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. Just subscribe to the calendar and they’ll magically appear in your diary! AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time!     • Please find the following information and newsletter relating to the NZ Secondary School Track, Field and Road Race Championships, being held in Newtown Stadium in 6-8 December 2019 Newsletter One Guideline Programme The following changes (in red) have been made to the programme: In order to avoid a clash of High and Triple Jumps for the Junior Boys the Junior/PA Boys and Junior/PA Girls High Jumps have been swapped. The boys will now compete on Sunday at 9.00am and the girls on Saturday at 3.30pm. This also improves the spread of jumps for the girls. As a result of interest in having mixed girls and boys 4×400m relays the NZSSAA Executive has decided to trial this as a pilot event for both grades for 2019/20. Conditions of entry: Teams are to made up of 2 boys and 2 girls Any individual school team or a combined team from two single gender schools within the same region (as defined for the Cross Country Relay Championships) may enter Only 1 team per grade from each school or combined schools may enter An athlete may only compete in one 4×400m relay Schools entering teams in the 4×400m relays are asked to please consider carefully the number of events their athletes are involved in and the possibility that they may be overloaded by doing relays in addition to their individual events The post Newsletter- NZSSAA Track, Field and Road Race Championships appeared first on College Sport Wellington.

This may be your last chance to see this fabulous facility in its current form as it is likely that we will have to dismantle antenna infrastructure over the coming year (to make way for the wind farm project).

    • November 2022 will be the final month of paper Rail Monthly passes. The 30-day Rail pass replaces these passes and is available to load onto your Snapper card from 7 November, for use on the Kāpiti Line from 12 November and the rest of the network from 27 November. The pass is activated on its first use and includes your bus trip to or from your local station when travelling to Wellington Station from zones 4-14.

On Sunday 4 May, we held our Course Planning Seminar, which was a resounding success! About 12 people came along and we were thrilled to see such strong participation from experienced orienteers and those newer to the sport. The seminar provided valuable insights into course design and use of Condes software that is used for mapping orienteering courses. A huge thank you to Dick Dinsdale for arranging this as well as our contingent of helpers, and all who attended! This seminar not only strengthened our collective knowledge but also helped build a more connected and engaged community. We’re already planning future educational events to continue this momentum. I encourage all of you to keep the conversation going and apply what you've learned at our upcoming events. Throughout May and June, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get outdoors, improve your skills, and continue to challenge yourself. We’re also looking forward to an SGM and potluck on Sunday 8 June where we will vote on Orienteering Wellington’s new Constitution. Looking forward to seeing you all at our events! North Island Secondary Schools Champs This year’s North Island Secondary Schools Champs was hosted by Counties Manukau Orienteering Club. Congratulations to Orienteering Wellington members Troy Thompson, Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan, who came second in the Year 12-13 Senior Boys relay. Morag McLellan also came fourth in Year 12-13 Senior Girls long distance champs, and fifth in the sprint. Supporting our members Orienteering Wellington has awarded a $750 travel grant to club members selected to represent New Zealand internationally at International Orienteering Federation events. Rachel Baker and Jake McLellan will be representing New Zealand at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Trentino, Italy, from June 26 to July 3, 2025, as has Morag McLellan at Brno, Czechia, from 17 – 20 July. Lizzie Ingham has been selected for the team attending the World Orienteering Champs in Kuopio, Finland, from 8 – 12 July. Jake McLellan, World-Class Orienteer and Mountain Man Orienteering Wellington member Jake McLellan won the fabled Tararua Mountain Race – Southern Crossing, a 36km mountain run from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Forks. It was an epic effort that saw Jake crossing the finish line in 7:08:08. Jake says: “The race kicked off fast, and I couldn’t stick with the early pace, so I settled into my own rhythm and made sure to save some gas for the back half. Just after Alpha Hut, I spotted the leaders a couple of minutes ahead — that gave me a real boost and helped me keep pushing across the tops. I made goodtime across the tops and caught up to Chester at Kime Hut. After Bridge Peak, I put the hammer down on the technical descent and managed to pull away. From there, it was just a fast hobble down from Field Hut to the finish. “I'm absolutely stoked to take the win at such an iconic event! It's an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside some legends of the sport.” Tips and Tricks To help you improve your orienteering skills this winter, here are a few tips from our experienced members: Stay on the trail: In challenging conditions, it’s often easier to follow a trail, path, or prominent feature rather than trying to cross open terrain. It will save you time and help you maintain orientation. Map reading in low visibility: If you're out in low-light conditions, try marking key features(like water bodies or trails) on your map before starting. This will help you stay oriented even when visibility is reduced. Check your compass often: Don’t rely on your compass just once at the start. Check it regularly to ensure you’re staying on course. Small errors in direction can add up to big detours! Practise regularly: Winter orienteering training doesn’t have to be outdoors. Use mapsin your local area to practice route planning, compass work, and even map-reading skills indoors. Familiarity with your map will pay off in the field. Development and events There’s a lot happening in the coming months. This Sunday sees us at Baring Head, followed by another event at Battle Hill on Sunday 8 June. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. Advanced entries close 11.59pm Saturday. We’re offering a practical training session at Karori Park on Sunday 15 June. You’ll get a chance to put your newfound skills to the test at Matariki, in the pine forest and sand dunes of Waikawa, north of Ōtaki. Further afield is the three-day King’s Birthday event in the Hawkes Bay. Entries close Thursday. Orienteering Bay of Plenty’s Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua is coming up on Saturday 26 July 2025 – a fun, team navigation challenge where you try to collect as many controls as you can in the time allowed. There are 3- and 6-hourevents that you can do on foot or mountain bike. It’s a great adventure for groups of friends and family. Entries close Tuesday 22 July.     • If the recent SW Short Course champs is anything to go by, 2007/08 looks set to be a bumper year for local and national records set by Wellington swimmers. 28 local and 4 national records were broken at the meet, beating the 27 local and one national record set in 2005/06. Wellington swimmers are well on track to surpass the 59 SW and 8 SNZ records broken in 05/06 and we still have 7 months to go!

    • Biking around the bays is a stunning ride. But it could be ruined if traffic trebles. Cyclists will be forced off the road. Next Wednesday, Wellington City Councillors vote on a proposal to develop Shelly Bay, permitting a giant housing and shopping development. But there’s no plan to upgrade Shelly Bay Road. That could mean 3-4 vehicles every minute along a narrow road, trying to pass on blind corners. Cyclists could be expected to share a 1.5 metre path with pedestrians.

They were able to sit on anchor to avoid being blown onto the rocks while Coastguard Mana responded. A special weekend workshop using psychodrama is to be held 4-6 May in Alpha Street’s The Training Space. “Putting yourself centre stage in a safe and understanding space helps people to strengthen their sense of self, their relationships and their effectiveness within a group,” says workshop leader, John Faisandier.

Engine would not go into forward gear (gearbox failure). No cell cover, Weather came up and they were concerned for safety so activated their EPIRB.
