      • It’s less than 2 weeks till The Wellington round of the New Zealand International Film Festival Typical Wellington behaviour at this time often includes - Courtenay Place place being full during daylight hours - people taking no lunch breaks to allow for an extra long lunch break to catch a film - taking a day off work to see 4 films in a row - Taking 2 weeks off work to spend the time in a darkened cinema - Catching up with people you only see once a year at film festival - taking mini trips to other Cities just to see films you missed in Wellington - excessive listening to the Rancho Notorious podcast to see what Dan or Kailey think of a film or special watching tips - running between the Paramount and the Embassy to catch a film - eating while standing in line for a film - trying to guess which film will come back when caught in a timetable dilemma   In light of what will be a wonderful 2 weeks in Wellington, here’s our personal tips for what to catch during the festival. Don’t wait for a film to  return, for Video on Demand. nothing beats the big screen and nothing beats a big screen filled with fellow film fans, even worse the returning film might be something edited down for timing or some other stupid reason. Heather C   Aunty and the Star People – inspiring, uplifting and she’s a local. Beauty and the Beast – one of the great original classic fairytales which looks to have amazing detail.. Beloved Sisters – for the emotion and passion of two centuries prior.   Tom Beard REALITi: While NZ doesn’t have a stellar track record for science fiction movies, Chad Taylor and Jonathan King make an intriguing team that should bring dark, literate menace to this existential dystopian thriller. Particle Fever: Themes don’t come much bigger than the nature and fate of the universe, so this documentary about the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson should appeal to more than just physics junkies. Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s long-evolving back catalogue points to him eventually doing something extraordinary and I’m hoping this is it.   Runner-up:  Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I’m a Michel Gondry nut. He can do no wrong. I actually have a crush on him. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind. So to not see anything Orson Welles would be a crime against cinema Bonus Track The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness – behind the scenes at Studio Ghibli the year that Miyazaki Hayao was completing his last film The Wind Rises and Takahata Isao worked on The Tale of Princess Kaguya The post New Zealand International Film Festival 2014 appeared first on The Wellingtonista.

    • Love at the Zoo
      • There are those who believe that the penguins at Wellington Zoo are nothing more than a conspiracy theory. How else can you explain visiting the zoo multiple times and never catching a glimpse of them? Or only seeing their tiny feet and bellies peeking out from their cozy nesting boxes? Some question if they're real or just well-made statues. The keepers in charge of the penguin exhibit seem to think these birds exist, but VUWSA's Emily Bull thinks otherwise. However, I am strongly against this notion. In fact, I was so passionate about it that I contacted the zoo specifically to learn more about my beloved (and entirely real) penguin couple: Harriet and Nettle. And through my research, I discovered how they (along with some other adorable animals) fell in love.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 11/09/2018 - 11:30 - 13:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  10 Police callout (incident # P034833430), Jetski Broken down off Plimmerton Beach, 2 POB.  On arrival on scene, 2 POB were in the water and had been so for 2.5 hours holding the jetski off the reef.  The POB's were brought onto the CRV and the jetski was taken under tow.     • News release – kings birthday open day
      • KING’S BIRTHDAY– OPEN DAY MONDAY 3RD JUNE, 10AM- 4PM Wellington’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress in Karori will be opening for public inspection again on King’s Birthday, Monday 3rd June. The World War Two coastal battery first opened to the public in 1989 and will be accessible between 10am and 4pm. On King’s Birthday people are invited to self-guide themselves through the tunnels and gun emplacements. The walk usually takes about one hour, so bring a torch with you for some fun! Visitors will be able to explore the 620 metres of underground tunnels with a free map and history pamphlet. They will see the engine room, shell stores, plotting rooms and the huge gun pit where Gun Number 1 used to stand, as well as a replica of the 10 metre-long gun barrel.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 27/12/2020 - 18:00 - 20:45 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  11 A small launch on the pole moorings broke its stern line and drifted around on its bow line and wedged itself between the pole and the yacht moored in front of it. We were asked by the pole mooring manager to assist with getting it back on its mooring so that it didn't damage the yacht. MR1 was used to push it around and secure it back in place. Also assisted the Mana Marina manager to recover the turning bouys from outside the entrance that had broken away. line-height:150% !important; } } Latest stories and updates from DCM The end of an era A letter from Stephanie Stephanie and Kaye Clark at this month’s DCM AGM Tēnā koutou katoa As many of you will know, my time as Director of this very special organisation, DCM, will come to an end in December. I want to thank you all for your support, and to challenge and encourage you to continue your commitment to the most marginalised people in the years ahead. During my time at DCM, our focus has been on one key marginalised group – those who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. We have adopted the tagline “together we can end homelessness”. One of the highlights of my time as Director has been the way in which this “together” has grown, with so many individuals, groups, businesses, funders and agencies joining us in our commitment to supporting the most vulnerable to thrive. I also want to pay particular tribute to our taumai themselves, for the courage they display when they “pick up the paddle” and join us on a journey to sustainable housing and greater wellbeing.   Many things have changed in the past 17 years, and much has changed in the landmark year which 2020 has proven to be. With more of the most marginalised people now newly housed, or in emergency housing while they wait to move in to their own home, we must ensure that these taumai are supported to sustain their housing, and do not fall back in to homelessness. I always enjoy sharing stories with you, and this month it has been my pleasure to share the story of Joanne, one of our peer support workers. I have a particular passion for peer support work; it provides an opportunity for those who are now stably housed to obtain employment, while at the same time supporting the newly housed to settle in their homes and sustain their tenancies.   Thank you so much for your support of DCM, and of me. Email Matt at matthew@dcm.org.nz <!-- --> Joanne's story Joanne with Arthur at his whare. We shared Arthur’s story with you in 2018. Arthur has now been housed for more than two years. "I was brought up in the Hutt Valley, and it was my mum and dad who gave me a heart to help others. But when I was about 8 years old, our mum left. I ran away when I was 11, and lived rough for a while. One of my friends told her mum that I was staying on the streets, and she took me in. I really didn’t like anything about school as a teenager, so I left when I was 15 and got a job. I did all sorts, but I most enjoyed anything that involved working closely with people. I first heard about DCM when my sister Regina started working here. She used to volunteer me – “My sister will do it!” - usually without asking me first. I began volunteering at DCM, driving the old DCM van, picking up goods for the Foodbank Appeal, and making sure the many volunteers at the DCM Bookfair were fed well.  After a while I decided to take a 3 month sabbatical from my job because I really loved what DCM does, and wanted to be more involved. That was in 2018 - and I've been here ever since. I have done all sorts in my role as a Peer Support worker at DCM - filing, driving, cooking, working in Te Hāpai, outreach and home support. I love going into people’s homes and helping them with their basic cleaning and life skills. We used to turn up to T’s place and his whole house would be filled with bags of clothing and rubbish. You could hardly walk in to the place. I started by cleaning his kitchen. After a while, he began to look forward to us being there, and would work alongside us. Sometimes he just needed someone to talk to. With another taumai, W, we would sit down with him and his keyworker. We would just sit and listen to him. Now when he comes into DCM he wants to talk; whereas before that he would come in and wouldn’t speak to anyone. Many of our taumai have similar experiences to our peer workers; this is why peer support is a great thing. I recently completed a peer support course at DCM, and now I am working as a peer support worker with our Aro Mai Housing First team. Taone asked me whether I wanted to do peer support mahi out in the Hutt. I had moved back to the Hutt just before lock-down, so the timing was perfect. I am back in my own community and I love it. But the thing I miss most is being in Te Hāpai. Having that face-to-face contact with all our taumai, every day, is such a special privilege. I know that DCM wants to raise money to pay more Peer Support workers to work alongside taumai who are newly housed or who need support to sustain their tenancy. What would I say to anyone thinking about supporting this work, or to taumai who are thinking about applying for a Peer Support role at DCM? I think it would be the best thing that you have ever done! Taumai are more likely to gravitate to peer workers as they know that we have had the same lived experiences. I love absolutely everything about my job. My favourite moments always involve interactions with our taumai. Before we closed Te Hāpai one Christmas Eve, I stood by the door and as each of our taumai walked past, I said “Give us a hug!” And I gave everyone a hug. Some of them said to me “I smell” but I said “So what?” And some of them cried, because they had not been touched for years – no physical contact with anybody. That was a revelation to me. Another favourite moment was when M came in. I was sitting watching him and he looked really, really down. This was a long time before he got his own whare. I walked over and hugged him and hugged him, until he was ready to let go. I could see all the taumai around us watching. They’ve seen the way he has shouted abuse in the past. But they had also seen what DCM is about, what our kaupapa is. DCM will never give up on the most marginalised people, and we are all so fortunate to be part of something so special." This month the NZ Herald spoke with DCM’s Natalia Cleland about some of the successes which came out of lock-down for our taumai, including the numbers who were able to move in to emergency housing and on in to their own homes. Natalia also had an opportunity this week to speak on TV One’s Breakfast show, making the point that emergency housing is not a long-term solution, and calling for more permanent homes: "We need more social housing, we need the government to keep building...we need landlords who have rentals who can provide their house for community housing, coming to a service like ours where we can support their tenancy for as long as it takes for them to thrive...we need harm-reduction housing...we need a whole range of housing options." They will receive a copy of the planning sheet in rōpū and the planning sheet is also included as the last page in the booklet online. Choices can be made online in the Student Portal from Monday 14th September. It would be appreciated if students can have their options entered by Sunday 20th September (note: this is earlier than reported in the email home). Senior Course Choices for 2021 The second part of senior course choice selection for 2021 is now underway. Students now need to re-confirm their subjects on the portal by Friday 18th September.  Please note there have been considerable movements with the lines to eliminate as many clashes as possible. It is unlikely there will be significant changes to the lines from now, so students are strongly advised to choose non-clashing subjects if possible. However, students who still have a problematic clash should indicate this on the updated lines sheet (which will be given out at rōpū) and give this to their rōpū teacher. Concerning online content  Netsafe has received several reports about a concerning video that was shared on social media. It has now been removed from Facebook. The video has been shared on other social media sites, such as Tik Tok and Instagram, and the platforms are actively removing this video.  Regardless of whether students have seen the video or heard about it second-hand, young people may experience emotional distress given the nature of this content. As a school, our best advice is to make sure that your students are supported and have avenues to talk about how this content may be affecting them.  If students do come across copies of the video being shared, we’d strongly encourage them to report it to the social media site or website that it’s on, and to report it to Netsafe. A huge congratulations to our Junior Prem and Prem B teams who have made it through to their regional finals for debating! The Junior Prem team of Sky Gobbi, Liv Calder, Tom Bonert, and Fergus Martin-Edgar, won their semi-final debate last Tuesday against Samuel Marsden. The Senior Prem B team of Julia Randerson,  Alex Buyck, Corwin Heath-Cameron, and Rata Petherick won their semi-final debate this week against Scots. It is a very impressive result for Wellington High School debate teams to make it into two finals! We are very proud of both teams and wish them all the best for their finals.  Also — a special congratulations to Julia Randerson who qualified for Wellington Black (one of the two Wellington regional teams) a couple of months ago. Her team made it to the national semi-finals for debating after winning four of their preliminary debates! Katherine Mansfield Short Story success! Congratulations to Nadezhda Macey for winning the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award 2020 with her story ‘Matahiwi’, and to Cadence Chung for her Highly Commended story ‘The End of the World’. Wellington High School was the only school to have two students short-listed — a great achievement. Mural workshop with Sheyne Tuffery This week a group of art students joined Sheyne in developing a design for a mural for the level 2 linkwell. This is a WCC funded project that Sheyne has been working on for some months. Sheyne’s mural work can be seen on Wallace Street and Hopper Street. We look forward to seeing the final results — BSJ WHS Tramping Club heads to Atiwhakatu Hut Last weekend, 18 students tramped to Atiwhakatu hut. We walked from Holdsworth station car park along the river to Atiwhakatu hut and back. Students cooked their own meals and lit the fire for a cosy night. A little rain failed to dampen our spirits; there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear! — AEJ/PAB From the Greenhouse! From the school garden greenhouse this week orchids for WHS reception. Grown with care by the senior horticulture students. He Kākano news Our He Kākano students have enjoyed an outdoor education week. We visited the learning centre at the Botanical Gardens to learn about how produce grows from a seed to a fruit and vegetable. There were opportunities to pick our own carrots too! A visit to Toi Art at Te Papa had us in a colour room with some interesting group photos. Sports Underwater Hockey Congratulations go to Carlos Relph and Henry Murdoch from our Senior Open team for their selection to the U18 Central Zone B team, and to Milly Woodbury from our Senior Girls team for her selection to the U18 Central Zone A team. We wish them good luck at nationals. Well done to them, and something to aim for in future years for our junior players Junior Girls’ Football Our Junior Girls’ Football played their last game this week, this is the first team we have had in this grade for a number of years and we are looking forward to having a team in this grade for years to come. Huge thanks to Bea Gladding and Jennifer Argyle for really driving this team and making it fun for all the girls. Winter Tournament Our Girls’ Football 1st XI finished their Round robin the Regional Premier 2 competition in 3rd place with Semi Finals, and possibly Finals, to come. At the Winter Tournament, the girls place 12th which is their best finish to date. A special thanks to Isobel Smith, Heidi Coleman, Ella Blakely, Gala Baumfield, Emma Allen, Kayla Landers and Isla McInnes who all competed in their final tournament for the school. Also, thanks to Will Dewhirst who has done a great job coaching. Our Boys’ Football 1st XI finished their last game of the Round Robin D1 competition, finishing unbeaten after 7 games. So, we have finished 1st with 17 points (5 wins and 2 draw). We are heading now into Semi Finals on Saturday 12 September. Our Boys’ Hockey 1st XI are currently in 2nd place in the P3 division and are hoping to compete at the final in week 10. The boys competed hard at Winter Tournament week and finished it off with a win over Newlands. Big thank you to Will Pinckney, Jess Johnson and Kether Gati for looking after the team. Netball: Last year our Senior A netball team won their grade and this year they have done it again! Well done, too, to our Senior B team who won their grade too. Great things are coming from these young strong wāhine…and our Year 13s finishing on a high. They will receive a copy of the planning sheet in rōpū and the planning sheet is also included as the last page in the booklet online. Choices can be made online in the Student Portal from Monday 14th September. It would be appreciated if students can have their options entered by Sunday 20th September (note: this is earlier than reported in the email home). Senior Course Choices for 2021 The second part of senior course choice selection for 2021 is now underway. Students now need to re-confirm their subjects on the portal by Friday 18th September.  Please note there have been considerable movements with the lines to eliminate as many clashes as possible. It is unlikely there will be significant changes to the lines from now, so students are strongly advised to choose non-clashing subjects if possible. However, students who still have a problematic clash should indicate this on the updated lines sheet (which will be given out at rōpū) and give this to their rōpū teacher. Concerning online content  Netsafe has received several reports about a concerning video that was shared on social media. It has now been removed from Facebook. The video has been shared on other social media sites, such as Tik Tok and Instagram, and the platforms are actively removing this video.  Regardless of whether students have seen the video or heard about it second-hand, young people may experience emotional distress given the nature of this content. As a school, our best advice is to make sure that your students are supported and have avenues to talk about how this content may be affecting them.  If students do come across copies of the video being shared, we’d strongly encourage them to report it to the social media site or website that it’s on, and to report it to Netsafe. Netsafe has several helpful resources: Helping students exposed to upsetting content Online Safety Parent Toolkit is a wider framework for helping parents navigate online safety with their young people. A huge congratulations to our Junior Prem and Prem B teams who have made it through to their regional finals for debating! The Junior Prem team of Sky Gobbi, Liv Calder, Tom Bonert, and Fergus Martin-Edgar, won their semi-final debate last Tuesday against Samuel Marsden. The Senior Prem B team of Julia Randerson,  Alex Buyck, Corwin Heath-Cameron, and Rata Petherick won their semi-final debate this week against Scots. It is a very impressive result for Wellington High School debate teams to make it into two finals! We are very proud of both teams and wish them all the best for their finals.  Also — a special congratulations to Julia Randerson who qualified for Wellington Black (one of the two Wellington regional teams) a couple of months ago. Her team made it to the national semi-finals for debating after winning four of their preliminary debates! Katherine Mansfield Short Story success! Congratulations to Nadezhda Macey for winning the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award 2020 with her story ‘Matahiwi’, and to Cadence Chung for her Highly Commended story ‘The End of the World’. Wellington High School was the only school to have two students short-listed — a great achievement.       • The Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club (LHAAC) caters for children aged 7-15 years. The 2006-07 season runs from 25th October to 15th March. Club nights offer a mixture of competition and coaching to enable children to gain the necessary skills to participate in a variety of running, jumping and throwing events.
