Basin flyover: another week of opposition
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s hard to find anyone who likes the NZ Transport Agency’s plans for a 380-metre-long flyover alongside the Basin Reserve. Starting at the Mt Victoria Tunnel, the structure would carry two lanes of vehicles above Ellice Street and Kent and Cambridge Terraces and discharge them at the Tory Street traffic lights. The flyover would be a dismal eyesore across the cityscape.

The disappearance of nine car parks, and the decline of a heritage shopping precinct
- Wellington Scoop
- n November 2008, road works were started to resurface and widen Riddiford Street in Newtown, from the southern end to the heritage shopping precinct at the intersection of John Street and Adelaide Road. The contractor put up a sign saying the work would take a month. But it took two and a half months, finishing about the middle of February 2009.

A processional route past the car yards
- Wellington Scoop
- A long-forgotten plan was dusted off and put back into the city council’s annual plan last week – it’s a plan to plant trees in Taranaki Street, to make it part of a new “processional route.” Taranaki Street was chosen for this honour in 2009 as part of a “capital city initiative” announced by the Prime Minister and then Mayor Kerry Prendergast.

Mount Street Cemetery
- The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
