To stand or not to stand, that is the question
- The Wellingtonista
- t's not easy to keep your balance on a trolley bus if you are wearing vertiginous high heels or are weighed down with shopping. It can feel like surfing rather than just riding the bus. But spare a thought for those whose seatlessness is more than just an inconvenience. In recent months, this Wellingtonista has noticed her protruding baby bump doesn't get her a coveted seat on a packed peak hour bus.

This should be more popular: Chef's Cafe
- The Wellingtonista
- At the top of Cuba Street, opposite Fidel's and next to a sex shop is what appears to be a crappy little tea room named Chef's Cafe. You might think that they're going to try and sell you a pie and a custard square, but you couldn't be more wrong. See that little sandwich board outside that says "Takeaway Curry $10"? That's right, this is an Indian restaurant. And it's good. And it's insanely cheap*.

Major new sculpture for Wellington
- Wellington Sculpture Trust
- The Wellington Sculpture Trust is excited to announce the commissioning of a major new artwork by the Wellington-based artist Regan Gentry. The piece, named Subject to Change, has been specifically designed for its location in the Te Aro area, making reference to the changes in the urban landscape of that part of Wellington. It comprises a replica of two walls of a heritage-style building, yet is clearly a large scale work of art.

Indoor Sports Centre
- Eye of the Fish
- The Eye of the Fish has tried to keep away from the whole sorry saga of the Sports Centre, but recent developments deserve a forum for comment. The entire Sports Centre fad has escaped by the Fish, for whom the idea of 12 courts full of screaming netballers sounds more like a living hell than a place we’d ever want to go to. Apparently even 12 courts is a small number, claim the supporters,

February Fun
- Wellington VHF Group
- Last months meeting at Sladden Park was a great success thanks to John ZL2HD getting the gate keys so we could get to our favourite spot, and Bruce ZL2ABC providing the BBQ and a wind-break (his van) to stop the fresh northerly breeze. We had a great time. We ate. We drank (very lightly). We talked. Some flew kites. One flew a model helicopter. We looked at mobile installations and fibre-optic cab

- The Nissan Mobil 500 may be a distant memory, but it still has made its mark on the city - check out the way that Jervois Quay feels more like a chute designed for cars to hurtle along at high speed than a pleasant harbourside city street. Saving the orchids
- Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush Trust
- Nationally significant research to save rare native orchids is being undertaken in a tiny science lab at Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush in Wellington. Finding Ōtari conservation and science advisor Dr Karin van der Walt and research technician Jennifer Alderton-Moss is a bit of a mission. The pair work from a small cottage behind Ōtari’s plant nursery, hidden from visitors who wander the trails exploring New Zealand’s single largest collection of native plants.

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
