      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 17/05/2021 - 18:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  15 Prepared to move H28, wind gusting 25 to 30 knot NW.  Route to berth varable wind direction, vessel on inide corner of fairway sticks out by a metre making turning with NW hazardous.  Finger on Western side with vessel with prominent anchor protruding outside berth pole line.  Too high a risk to attempt so aborted.  Stopped at 2 x yachts with bad hallard slap and remedied.  Went through two fire drills and an abandon ship.     • Prem 2 – OBU v HOBM 10-07-2021
      • This is from a new eye in the field who shall remain anonymous for now. A great read I’m sure you’ll agree!! This was submitted a few days after the match but has taken a while to get published. Apologies for that. In the first of two OBU vs HOBM games this weekend the Prem 2’s travelled out to Hutt Rec in search of a win & bonus point to secure a top 4 finish in the pursuit of Ed Chaney. Severely depleted in the front row particularly meant season debuts for Jason Gore from the Righteous Pack & John from the Teddy Bears. Also pulling on the boots in nearly 3 years was Physio Mark Thorne-Alexander.

    • Hugh Rennie: No need to spend $45m destroying a public asset
      • It’s four weeks since the irrepressible Helene Ritchie urged me to join a challenge to the Wellington City Council’s plan to demolish the City to Sea Bridge. I declined. Too many other matters already engaged me. But I did read the technical reports disclosed by the Council and found a curious thing. The Council said they recommended demolition. I found they did not. I wrote and lodged a written submission pointing this out. Perhaps I had misunderstood. So far none of the engineers have disputed my submission with me. Two more from Dunning Thornton and then Spencer Holmes (who know the bridge well, having strengthened it after the Kaikoura Quakes) confirmed my main conclusions.

    • Energy Saving Lightbulbs: Will they help or hinder radio hams?
      • An interesting point for consideration in Amateur circles; perhaps more in the HF space but definately a subject to be wary of. George Boorer ZL3PN was recently featured in the Otago Daily Times commenting on his experiences with an energy saving lightbulb. What do you think? Is Halogen the answer? Should incandescent bulbs be retained on sale (perhaps more expensively) as a useful alternative for some situations? Or do the energy savers need a complete rethink?       • G'day everyone, A quick note to point out a couple of changes to the website. Firstly, can advise that the Wellington VHF Group position paper on is now available for download. This was missing for a while, and was redirecting people back to the front page. We invite your comments on this document. Also it may have been noticed that the menu structure in the left hand frame of this website has shrunk. As we've been populating the site with more and more static content, it became necessary to activate the 'collapse' option on the menu items - they're still there, you just need to click on the appropriate category and the list of sub-options will appear. read more

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/04/2011 - 09:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  10 Coastguard Mana spent the day on the water with a crew of volunteers to assist the organisers of the Mana Ocean Race Challenge - a 29km paddle for outrigger canoes, kayaks and surf skis that took them from Mana to Paraparaumu Beach. Conditions on the day started off calm with light southerlies, but the wind built to around 20 knots later in the course creating some more challenging seas conditions for the competitors.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 16/02/2013 - 11:30 - 13:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 A launch with 7 people on board that was participating in the Mana Cruising Club fishing competition alerted CRV Pelorus, who were out training at the time, that they were having issues getting the engine started. Pelorus delivered a battery jump pack to them to attempt to start the engine but it was not powerful enough.     • Aground on sand bank in Paremata Harbour
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Fri, 13/12/2019 - 20:00 - Sat, 14/12/2019 - 23:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  5 Total Volunteer Hours:  162 A 6m runabout ran aground on a sand bank returning from a day of  ski biscuiting and wake boarding in Paremata Harbour (Pautahanui Arm of Porirua Harbour)  at approximately 2:45pm today. Due to the falling tide it had to remain there for the day and we returned the owner back to it at 9pm to retrieve it. We used MR2 to tow it off the sand once the water level was high enough and safely returned to the launching ramp between the bridges. They will receive a copy of the planning sheet in rōpū and the planning sheet is also included as the last page in the booklet online. Choices can be made online in the Student Portal from Monday 14th September. It would be appreciated if students can have their options entered by Sunday 20th September (note: this is earlier than reported in the email home). Senior Course Choices for 2021 The second part of senior course choice selection for 2021 is now underway. Students now need to re-confirm their subjects on the portal by Friday 18th September.  Please note there have been considerable movements with the lines to eliminate as many clashes as possible. It is unlikely there will be significant changes to the lines from now, so students are strongly advised to choose non-clashing subjects if possible. However, students who still have a problematic clash should indicate this on the updated lines sheet (which will be given out at rōpū) and give this to their rōpū teacher. Concerning online content  Netsafe has received several reports about a concerning video that was shared on social media. It has now been removed from Facebook. The video has been shared on other social media sites, such as Tik Tok and Instagram, and the platforms are actively removing this video.  Regardless of whether students have seen the video or heard about it second-hand, young people may experience emotional distress given the nature of this content. As a school, our best advice is to make sure that your students are supported and have avenues to talk about how this content may be affecting them.  If students do come across copies of the video being shared, we’d strongly encourage them to report it to the social media site or website that it’s on, and to report it to Netsafe. Netsafe has several helpful resources: Helping students exposed to upsetting content Online Safety Parent Toolkit is a wider framework for helping parents navigate online safety with their young people. A huge congratulations to our Junior Prem and Prem B teams who have made it through to their regional finals for debating! The Junior Prem team of Sky Gobbi, Liv Calder, Tom Bonert, and Fergus Martin-Edgar, won their semi-final debate last Tuesday against Samuel Marsden. The Senior Prem B team of Julia Randerson,  Alex Buyck, Corwin Heath-Cameron, and Rata Petherick won their semi-final debate this week against Scots. It is a very impressive result for Wellington High School debate teams to make it into two finals! We are very proud of both teams and wish them all the best for their finals.  Also — a special congratulations to Julia Randerson who qualified for Wellington Black (one of the two Wellington regional teams) a couple of months ago. Her team made it to the national semi-finals for debating after winning four of their preliminary debates! Katherine Mansfield Short Story success! Congratulations to Nadezhda Macey for winning the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award 2020 with her story ‘Matahiwi’, and to Cadence Chung for her Highly Commended story ‘The End of the World’. Wellington High School was the only school to have two students short-listed — a great achievement. We look forward to seeing the final results — BSJ WHS Tramping Club heads to Atiwhakatu Hut Last weekend, 18 students tramped to Atiwhakatu hut. We walked from Holdsworth station car park along the river to Atiwhakatu hut and back. Students cooked their own meals and lit the fire for a cosy night. A little rain failed to dampen our spirits; there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear! — AEJ/PAB From the Greenhouse! From the school garden greenhouse this week orchids for WHS reception. Grown with care by the senior horticulture students. He Kākano news Our He Kākano students have enjoyed an outdoor education week. We visited the learning centre at the Botanical Gardens to learn about how produce grows from a seed to a fruit and vegetable. There were opportunities to pick our own carrots too! A visit to Toi Art at Te Papa had us in a colour room with some interesting group photos. Sports Underwater Hockey Congratulations go to Carlos Relph and Henry Murdoch from our Senior Open team for their selection to the U18 Central Zone B team, and to Milly Woodbury from our Senior Girls team for her selection to the U18 Central Zone A team. We wish them good luck at nationals. Well done to them, and something to aim for in future years for our junior players Junior Girls’ Football Our Junior Girls’ Football played their last game this week, this is the first team we have had in this grade for a number of years and we are looking forward to having a team in this grade for years to come. Huge thanks to Bea Gladding and Jennifer Argyle for really driving this team and making it fun for all the girls. Winter Tournament Our Girls’ Football 1st XI finished their Round robin the Regional Premier 2 competition in 3rd place with Semi Finals, and possibly Finals, to come. At the Winter Tournament, the girls place 12th which is their best finish to date. A special thanks to Isobel Smith, Heidi Coleman, Ella Blakely, Gala Baumfield, Emma Allen, Kayla Landers and Isla McInnes who all competed in their final tournament for the school. Also, thanks to Will Dewhirst who has done a great job coaching. Our Boys’ Football 1st XI finished their last game of the Round Robin D1 competition, finishing unbeaten after 7 games. So, we have finished 1st with 17 points (5 wins and 2 draw). We are heading now into Semi Finals on Saturday 12 September. Our Boys’ Hockey 1st XI are currently in 2nd place in the P3 division and are hoping to compete at the final in week 10. The boys competed hard at Winter Tournament week and finished it off with a win over Newlands. Big thank you to Will Pinckney, Jess Johnson and Kether Gati for looking after the team. Netball: Last year our Senior A netball team won their grade and this year they have done it again! Well done, too, to our Senior B team who won their grade too.     • Harakeke Happenings in Term 2
      • We have been a busy hub in Harakeke so far this term! We have been focusing on:*Art - completing portraits either in Picasso style or using foreshortening (optical illusion making some parts of our body look closer than others) *Performance - for our official school opening all students took part in at least one performance, with most students being involved in several, including street dance, guitar, tuned percussion, Chinese dance, World Cafe maths, library activities, singing and many more! We also performed a wide variety of items for our school concert after the official opening.*Creative electives - choosing from a range of activities such as creating dioramas and print making*Language learning: Te Reo Maori and Mandarin*Developing our understanding and performance of our powhiri ceremony *Maths and literacy learning*Music - tuned percussion, singing*Learning conferences: all students spent between 30-45 minutes with one of the Harakeke teachers talking through their three matrices (maths, reading, writing). This discussion then led to the creation of a personal learning treaty (PLT) for each student, including a series of goals chosen by the student, using their matrices to identify their next learning steps. Students then talked through the matrices and their PLT with their parent/s, and these documents have been shared with students and parents so that they can be continually viewed and updated. Now that our art unveiling and school opening  ceremonies are behind us we can move into the more settled part of our term. The learning conferences and creation of PLTs have been extremely useful in helping to inform our planning for the rest of this term. Focus areas for Weeks 5-10:*Maths: Specific skills based work through workshops, Snappers and World Cafe Maths. Snapper maths involves short videos we are creating to explain specific skills. To view Snappers we have created thus far please see the ‘Snapper’ link at the top of our Harakeke blog. Our Snappers will not only be about maths skills, they will be created for all learning areas. We have just begun to create them, so there are only a few to begin with...watch this space! Maths will be personalised for all students with workshops, activities and snappers developed for groups of students needing specific instruction or skill development. We are currently spending time showing the students how to use their maths matrix and PLT to identify their next learning steps and then choose particular activities/websites/materials/textbooks to achieve their learning goal. Specific maths areas we will be focusing on: fractions, division and multiplication skills and strategies, problem posing and solving.Below is a collage of Snapper maths work: *Literacy: Matariki module - students are reading and analysing books and information about Matariki (Maori New Year). They share their learning in a variety of ways, including retelling the story orally and in written form. Students will then be researching a range of Maori legends explaining Matariki and presenting their learning in a variety of forms, culminating in a Harakeke video telling the story of Matariki, along with a range of legends. They will then be exploring and researching explanations of the Matariki stars from other countries and cultures. We are also developing our narrative writing skills, including giving and receiving feedback from peers. Students are practicing using their reading and writing matrices and their PLTs to ascertain the particular skills they need to focus on when reading and writing. Creative writing is also an ongoing task for all students. *Inquiry: Students are continuing with their inquiries from last term (such as creating lunch orders made for students by students, exploring 1-1 devices at school and ordering senior literacy resources). These inquiries will be completed by the end of Week 6, with proposals, where necessary, written and presented, and actions taken across the school. For Weeks 7-10 a variety of different inquiry work will then begin, including beginning a travel plan for the school (a group of students investigating how students travel to school, exploring how environmentally friendly our travel habits are to/from school and looking at any actions we can take to increase sustainable and environmentally friendly travel) and exploring our school and its features. Food tech: Amaria Picard will begin working with our school lunches inquiry group to start creating school lunches prepared and cooked by students one day a week. This module will include planning, costing, purchasing, storing and cooking the lunches. Amaria will work with this group for 5 weeks, and then she will start the same module with another group of students. All Yr 4-6 students will complete this food tech module with her by the end of the year.  *Active learners: We will continue to focus on students becoming active, self-directed learners through developing their understanding and use of their matrices and PLTs to inform their learning choices. All students will be directed to continually access and use their matrices to ensure their focus is on their next learning steps in reading, writing and maths. Every Friday students spend an hour reflecting on their learning, reviewing their PLT goals and identifying what they have done to achieve their learning goals. They are also asked to inform teachers of the workshops, Snappers or 1-1 guidance they now need to achieve their learning goals.

The Harbour Master asked us to attempt to recover it to remove the hazard.     • Wishing for a better world
      • Wishbone have put up the prices of most of its food by $1, so now you will pay $7.50 for their cranberry, chicken and brie sandwich (luckily, next door to my local Wishbone is the Concorde Cafe where I can get a crusty baguette filled with salami and cheese, and a mystical half olive for a bargain $3.50). They say that it is the rising cost of petrol that has forced them into it. We say that maybe if they investigated ways to reduce the ridiculous amount of plastic that their food comes in, the cost of petrol wouldn't affect them quite as much.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 22/01/2012 - 16:30 - 17:10 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 A float plane was having difficulty taxiing to the jetty in high winds inside Porirua Harbour. The pilot contacted the Fire Service to request standby assistance and they contacted Coastguard Mana for on-water assistance in case there were any difficulties with getting to the jetty safely. Incident Management Team members from Coastguard Mana and the local fire crew attended from the shore. The plane safely taxied to the intended jetty and no further assistance was required.     • Congratulations to the Regional Council: a Basin solution without a flyover
      • Congratulations to the Regional Council on the vote last week to revisit Option X. The Architectural Centre’s design beats the Transport Agency’s by integrating needs – it’s more sophisticated than just another stretch of State Highway 1. In 2009, the Civic Trust ran a public seminar about the Basin Reserve area to a packed house. Clearly it showed a successful solution would need to balance the interests of residents, motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and children. This has shaped our flyover response: the flyover doesn’t achieve grade separation from local traffic, and it doesn’t fit its surroundings (SH2 Dowse shows NZTA’s style). There are better ways of improving transport.

In fact, if he really wanted to be a champion for the Basin Reserve, pro-roading WCC councillor John Morrison could get nine of his peers to support an extraordinary meeting, where the Council could decide to send a letter to the NZ Transport Agency demanding they release the designs for the Basin Reserve flyover immediately. With participation up, this is great evidence that our club is in a strong position. Although I've been on the Committee over the years since arriving in Wellington in 1988, I haven't yet had the honour of leading Orienteering Wellington. My focus at this time is ensuring your club maintains momentum with quality events and training, as we gear up to hosting Nationals in a year's time. We have now wrapped up our evening sprint series and are moving on to the classic-style events. Our two most recent events were at Tikara and Karori Park and have also been part of a College Sport Wellington(CSW) orienteering series. We are grateful to our partnership with Orienteering Hutt Valley in delivering the CSW championship events. In the meantime, I wish everybody heading to Nationals in Canterbury safe travels, and good orienteering! Beverley Holder President Training opportunities Course Planning Seminar If you are currently a course planner or controller, or are interested in these roles, then Orienteering Wellington has a session for you! Our half-day Course Planning Seminar will be a practical session with some tips and tricks on how to set good courses, how to use the course software, and additional compliance responsibilities for controllers. You will also get the chance to share ideas with others who are planning and controlling courses. Course Planning Seminar Practical training for developing orienteers On Sunday 15 June, we will host training aimed at skills for orange-level orienteers – either those currently running orange or yellow courses and who want to start preparing for the next level. The focus will be on moving away from “handrails” like tracks, fences and streams, as well as improving accuracy of navigation near the control site. The location isn’t confirmed but will be in Wellington. Weekly interval training is back! Lizzie Ingham is offering group interval training at 6pm Wednesdays. You’ll get to build fitness running along the flat, up hills, or maybe a mix—and doing intervals as a group is much more motivating than doing intervals on your own. All Societies need a new Constitution Why now? As an incorporated society, Orienteering Wellington must provide a new Constitution to comply with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. Any society that does not reregister by 5 April 2026 will cease to exist. The Act had not been reviewed since 1908 and the new Act is far more explicit regarding the Committee, expectations of officer, conflicts of interest and concerns and complaints. What is changing? Currently, our Committee quorum is five. Orienteering Wellington now proposes a minimum Committee size of five, with a majority quorum. The Committee would be supported by working parties to help carry out the Club’s operations. We’ve effectively used such arrangements for delivering major events, club events, design, and reviews. Lachlan, our secretary, has led a small team to draft a new Constitution. We ask that you now read the draft Constitution. The Committee will consider your feedback and distribute this to members, noting any revisions to the proposed draft Constitution. Nationals 2026 Once again, Orienteering Wellington is teaming up with nearby clubs Red Kiwis, Hutt Valley and Taranaki to offer the NZ Orienteering Champs (Nationals) in the lower North Island next Easter (3-6 April 2026). At the moment, Malcolm Ingham is identifying suitable areas to map and Paul Teesdale-Spittle is assembling a small technical committee for the event. But we need your help to make the event a success! If you're keen to get involved, let us know. In any case, mark it in your diary for next year.
