    • Attendance at school (part 2)
      • Legal requirements: Did you know?Did you know that the Education Act 1989 says that all children enrolled at a school must attend school whenever that school is open?Did you know that the Board of Trustees is required to take all reasonable steps to ensure that students do attend school whenever it is open?Did you know that every parent of a child who is not at school without a good reason, commits an offence and can be convicted and fined?Did you know that just because parents have provided an explanation to the school for their child’s absence, that does not mean it is a justified absence? The principal is required to make decisions about whether an absence is really justified. What are good reasons for a student being absent?• Illness (a medical certificate should be provided if child is away longer than a week)• Bereavement• Medical appointments• Class tripsMany schools do not consider family trips or holidays or even overseas trips as good reasons for being absent from school. You should discuss such trips with the school principal prior to going. Attendance procedures next....

    • Community, Gardens and Kai - The Welly Urban Food Org.
      • With the end of June been and gone, our funding to run the Welly Urban Food Org. has come to an end. But, our involvement doesn't end here. We'll still be active advocates and supporters of urban agriculture in our city, it just changes slightly (keep an eye out for all our upcoming responsible composting workshops). Firstly, we must say a huge thank you to Sustainability Trust educators Laura-Kate Howells, Nina Atkinson, Caroline Arrowsmith and Asia Brownlie for their contributions in the early days of the programme. We also greatly appreciate the Wellington City Council for providing the funding for our urban agriculture programme since 2017 - we're lucky to have a local council who are keen to invest in our food system and building community around kai.

    • Te Tūhunga Rau opens: new name, new artwork
      • Serving the Strathmore Park community since the 1950s, the basic wooden building at 108 Strathmore Ave has been officially blessed today after a major upgrade thanks to investment by Wellington City Council. The centre, which is overseen by the Strathmore Park Community Centre Trust, hosts events, activities and services that enrich its community. The upgrade features a stunning new artwork and name – Te Tūhunga Rau. The upgrade began in 2020 and has been developed in partnership with community centre staff, board members and the Trust’s Te Rōpū Māori (Māori group). The design is by Etch Architecture who also worked with local Mana Whenua artist Pokau Te Ahuru (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Te Ātiawa, Ngāruahinerangi) on a key element of refurbishment, the exterior screens.

    • Fantastic news!
      • At today's Strategy & Policy Committee meeting, the Council voted to give Crossways a 12 month reprieve by providing some interim funding to St Andrews. This will allow enough time for the community to form a trust, put together a plan to re-invent Crossways for the 21st Century, and conduct some serious fund-raising. It's not the three years we asked for, but it's fair, reasonable, and - most of all - achievable. It's a fantastic outcome! Our heart-felt thanks go to St Andrews for their flexibility and genuine commitment to finding a workable compromise, and to the Council who have allowed the community the time to re-invent our community house. We'll post more information about what needs to happen next as soon as we can.

    • No plans, but they love it anyway
      • There was a night of magical thinking last Thursday when Wellington City Councillors debated the proposal to support a new building on the open green waterfront lawn of Frank Kitts Park. It was led by mayor Andy Foster, who said the fale maele proposal was “a magical concept, with the potential to be a great meeting place.” But it’s impossible to understand how he knows this, because there are no plans – not even a concept drawing – for anyone to see. Nothing. Perhaps Andy was looking into a crystal ball.

    • Wellington Whare Waka
      • A new building awaits us on Wellington waterfront. Opening early on Waitangi Day this coming weekend, the new Whare Waka is being officially named and declared open. We’re going to devote some room to an an-depth discussion of the building in our next Arch Centre newsletter, due out soon, where we will have a full architectural review, but in the mean time it is kind of hard to ignore - and so this post just touches on the context of its surrounding landscape. Which is, at present, all we can really see.

    • Hutt Park / Hutt Square
      • Slight change from Wellington – how about we look at the Hutt for a change? And yes, the Hutt is due for a change. Tenders are open for Lower Hutt’s new Square, which starts to make sense of the jumbled mess of parking that is currently outside the New Dowse. Design of “The Square” is of course by Athfield Architects, who did such a great job with the rebuild of the Dowse itself. It will be a “space for outdoor events, sculpture, exhibitions and leisure activities.” And it is proposed to look like this:

    • UNITED HOLD LEAGUE LEADERS
      • Supersub Birhanu Taye scored a penalty in the last minute of the game to give United a deserved point against the league leaders, Upper Hutt City, at Newtown Park on Saturday. Taye, who has been recovering from a serious knee injury has played just 24 minutes for United, but his return of two goals in that time has delighted his coach Guillermo Schiltenwolf and the Wellington United fans.
