      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 25/11/2014 - 21:45 - Wed, 26/11/2014 - 11:55 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  141 A 15ft runabout with 3 people on board broke down just offshore from Kaitawa Point (under the radio masts, south of Grandfather Rocks) just before 10pm. They were able to sit on anchor to avoid being blown onto the rocks while Coastguard Mana responded. We towed them back to their vehicle that was at the launching ramp between the bridges at Paremata.       • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall said that Zephyr Rovers had had no problems disposing of lower league opposition today at the Shed of Dreams, despite George Nash (pictured) being full of the flu. "We were five goals to nil up when I decided to have a run in the outfield""said Hall "but when it got back to 5 - 2 I scurried back into the goals for fear of them getting back in it". Hall said Rovers stabilised after his return to goal and Rovers went on to score another four goals unanswered. "I actually had a clean sheet when I was in goal but the stand ins let a couple in" said Hall "and the distribution went from excellent to very poor, which explains why I couldn't buy a goal in the outfield". Hall said the fear was the teams Rovers were playing were not close to the standard of Division 1 so the Rover would have to lift their game several notches if another Div 1 campaign was to be contemplated.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 26/12/2019 - 15:15 - 16:15 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  4 Whilst travelling out to do another tow job we spotted a vessel adrift with apparent engine problems. We came alongside to check they were ok and they couldn't get their engine going. They thought they would be able to, so we carried on with the other job. On the way back we passed them and they asked for assistance which they agreed to. We returned after dropping off the other vessel and towed them home to Mana Marina.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/02/2020 - 11:30 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 A yacht that started it's journey from Tauranga, destined for Marlborough Sounds, left Whanganui yesterday afternoon and then ran into mechanical difficulty 21 NM off shore from Foxton Beach. Coastguard Manawatu went out and towed him towards Kapiti Island, where Coastguard Kapiti took over the tow. Coastguard Mana then went out and took over the tow from from south of Kapiti Island and brought him into Mana Marina where he will be able to arrange repair.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/08/2020 - 18:15 - 22:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  6 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 Reports of waka capsized 800m off shore from Shell (near Goat Pt) and 6 people in the water. 2 other waka in the vicinity trying to assist. Police activated us and we launched MR2. Nothing found on location. 2 surf boats training in the area reported seeing waka heading back up the channel to Onepoto harbour. Called Police to report this and they confirmed that they were safe and well and had just sent a stand-down. Returned to base.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 26/12/2020 - 09:10 - 16:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  75 A 15m yacht broke its rudder approximately 2NM west of Mana Island whilst crossing to the South Island. MR1 was tasked by Police to tow them home. By the time we got to them the wind had got up to 25-35kts and they had drifted 7NM west of Mana Island. We towed them back in challenging conditions and put them at anchor just outside the Mana bar, as they were unable to cross it at low tide. We have also just taken delivery of EIGHT(!!!) boxes of terrific new LPs from the US, featuring many deleted and hard-to-find titles from a-Ha, Roy Ayers, The Beach Boys, Nine Inch Nails, King Crimson, Fugazi, The Proclaimers, Rammstein, , REM, Parquet Courts, Public Enemy, Lou Reed, Elton John, The Jesus & Mary Chain… I could go on, but perhaps best if you come and take a look for yourself – will have them out by the weekend!     • How Did I Get Hear? #17 - Alan Gregg on Ed Cake's "Downtown Puff"
      • Behold the Golden Man! Some time in the mid-1990s I was sitting on a sofa in Auckland watching a Saturday morning kids’ TV show called What Now? A band came on and played a song which featured the lyric “If I go to hospital / Will you administer my pill?” I had no idea who they were, but the song was brilliant, and one of the band members appeared to have springs attached to the soles of his shoes. A few weeks later I met two members of that band, Edmund McWilliams and Geoff Maddock, at a Supergroove show at Auckland University. We talked about our shared enthusiasm for the music of Jonathan Richman, and they gave me a cassette(!) of some songs they were working on. When I got home and played the cassette it was a revelation. It contained intensely melodic songs with absurd lyrics and unusual arrangements. I felt like I’d stumbled upon some kind of secret treasure. They were pop songs, but not like anything I’d heard before. The songs on that cassette later turned into the eponymous Bressa Creeting Cake album (Flying Nun Records 1997), which is still spoken of in reverential tones in certain circles. The three piece Bressa Creeting Cake band, with Joel Wilton on drums, came on tour around New Zealand with The Mutton Birds (who I played bass with), and it felt like a privilege to watch them play these amazing songs to baffled audiences each night. By that time Edmund McWilliams was becoming better known under the moniker Edmund Cake. In 1999 Edmund and I played together in Bic Runga’s band, when she supported Paul Kelly on a tour of Australia. On that trip I saw first hand how Ed’s approach was not like other musicians I knew. At one show Bic’s band was invited to join Paul Kelly and his band onstage for their encore, and during the song Ed played Paul Kelly’s acoustic guitar with such intensity that his hand bled all over the body of the guitar. At soundcheck the next day Paul Kelly’s unimpressed guitar technician greeted Ed with the guitar and a cleaning cloth. Ed set to work making it spotless, and we weren’t invited onstage for the encore again. Bressa Creeting Cake split up around that time, and Geoff Maddock formed the band Goldenhorse, which went on to become hugely popular in New Zealand. All of this is a very longwinded way of getting to the point that after the demise of Bressa Creeting Cake, Edmund Cake made a solo album called Downtown Puff (Lil’ Chief Records 2004), which I consider to be a masterpiece. Around the time Bressa Creeting Cake ended, an A&R man from the Dreamworks record label in LA came to visit Ed in New Zealand and gave him an advance to make some demos. Ed recorded three songs and sent them to the label. After not hearing from the A&R guy for a while, Ed called him in LA to ask what he thought of the songs. He replied that they were “Quite great”. Dreamworks did not sign Edmund Cake to the label in the end, but they did sign a little-known artist named Nelly Furtado. In the meantime, Tim Finn had become a supporter of Ed’s music and lent him some recording equipment for a studio Ed had assembled in a building in Gore Street in Auckland. Neil Finn had also become a fan and gave Ed time to complete Downtown Puff in his own studio. Edmund Cake is an unusually talented songwriter. He has a gift for composing melodies and chord changes which are both surprising and breathtakingly beautiful. He’s also able to write lyrics which can be funny and strangely affecting at the same time. And he doesn’t sound like anyone else. On Downtown Puff Ed played most of the instruments, and he engineered and produced the songs himself. It’s an album that constantly treads the line between the sublime and the ridiculous, and sometimes does both at the same time. "You’re Watching Me” and “Beautiful Sleep” are ballads as melodic and effortless as any I can think of. The song "Gunga" sounds like Captain Beefheart jamming with Devo on the set of Sesame Street. “My Son the Harpist” tells the story, over an Omnichord drum beat, of a young harp player who meets a tragic end. Ed was improvising the lyrics the first time he ever recorded the vocal on that song and he never changed them. As a result, there are some spontaneous words in that song that you won’t find in any dictionary. The song “Oh Baby Bear” is the catchiest song you’ll ever hear about the Auckland Public Transport system. Ed sings “She’s got a cuppa tea and sandwich, she’s feeling fine / She just crossed the Pukapuka line,” all delivered in a fair dinkum Kiwi accent. Perhaps Downtown Puff’ s master stroke is the track “Golden Man”, which sounds a bit like a 1970s psychedelic folk band singing a gospel song. The poetic lyrics, swooping melodies and Ed’s trademark falsetto vocals all contribute to the song’s eerie beauty. “He commands the cats to claw / He commands the boats to shore / He commands the gulls to fly / He commands the crops to die”. Sometimes Edmund’s music can evoke the genius of Brian Wilson in the way he can take really unusual chord changes and make them seem completely natural in a pop song. But this music doesn’t sound like Brian Wilson. Ed often adopts different character voices for the songs. One moment he’s singing in a sweet falsetto, and in the next he’s growling like Tom Waits. Each song has a distinct vocal identity, almost reminiscent of the way Prince used completely different voices for some of his songs. But this music sounds nothing like Prince. Sometimes I wonder why the Downtown Puff album isn’t better known than it is. It certainly has some devoted fans, but I can’t help thinking more people would like it if they knew about it. For me it’s the work of a visionary musical artist, and it's a collection of songs that contains just the right balance of beauty, mystery, playfulness and outrageously good tunes. It’s also worth mentioning that Edmund Cake released another album under the name Pie Warmer a few years later called The Fearsome Feeling (2009 Lil’Chief Records), which is every bit as great as Downtown Puff. Alan Gregg last year released a superb album under the name Polite Company, entitled "Please Go Wild" - first single "Circulation" is here, we have copies on LP and CD, and his website is here

Parent representatives are Chris Roberts, Deanne Daysh, Ariana Tikao, Crane Amaru, and Kasey McDonnell.  Charlene Aramoana continues in her role as staff representative.  Mrinali Kumar and Devin Pike are our student representatives for 2016. At the first meeting, Ganesh Nana was co-opted back onto the board and re-elected as Chairperson for the duration of 2016.  This is in order to ensure a smooth transition for the new board.       • George Gershwin:   An American in Paris Leonard Bernstein: Three Meditations from “Mass” Karlo Margetic:        Music for Wind, Brass and Percussion Duke Ellington:        Night Creature   Andrew Joyce, cello Marc Taddei, music director   Sunday, 26 May 4pm Wellington Town Hall Pre-concert talk 3pm   "Night creatures, unlike stars, do not come out at night - they come on, each thinking that before the night is out he or she will be the star”. – Duke Ellington The first half of the twentieth century saw America on the ascendant, and its music reflected this confident new society with bold new styles that strutted and swung.  For their first subscription concert, Night Creature, the orchestra presents works by Gershwin, Ellington and Bernstein that embrace the exciting new rhythms and harmonies of America. Orchestra Wellington music director Marc Taddei says he is fascinated by the way great classical composers are inspired by the popular music of their day. Most familiar perhaps is Gershwin’s An American in Paris. It’s 1928, the close of the Gilded Age, and for Americans, anything seems possible. Gershwin visits Paris to experience more of a culture he enjoyed. If there are some bluesy moments reflecting Gershwin’s longing for home, overall this piece is a sparkling tribute from a great cosmopolitan to the bustling metropolis he admired. Leonard Bernstein’s Mass was a child of its time too: 1971 and anything goes! These short meditations for solo cello and orchestra are extracted from a much larger Mass whose vast theatrical conception embraced everything from rock and gospel to Lutheran chorales and atonal expressionism. The full Mass, requiring three choirs, rock and military bands, has been vilified in some quarters and hailed as a masterpiece in others. But there is no question about the power and beauty of these short Meditations drawn from it. The Orchestra is proud to welcome NZSO Principal Cello Andrew Joyce as soloist. Joyce is a recent addition to the New Zealand’s concert stages, following on from a busy career as an orchestral, solo and chamber music player on the London scene. Duke Ellington’s Night Creature, from 1955, takes a bold new direction in form and orchestration. It is a kind of three-movement concerto grosso, with a core group comprised of a saxophone quartet and jazz rhythm section forming a ‘concertino’ within the orchestra. Our own New Zealand voice is explored by Orchestra Wellington’s Emerging Composer in Residence, Karlo Margetic, in his Music for Wind, Brass and Percussion.

This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success  Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled.  We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display. Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! We’ll start with a fun event at 4pm, followed by the meeting at 5pm. The AGM will include the President and Treasurer’s report, and an overview of the year. We will also confirm the draft minutes for 2024. This year we also passed a new Constitution and will need to elect a smaller Committee for 2026: President Treasurer 3 other officers. The Secretary will be appointed from within the Committee. The Committee will also be supported by working parties reporting into the Committee, but these are not elected roles. This is a bit of change, and we’re open to hearing what working groups you think would be useful and may like to be part of going forward. Originally held in winter, the “Classic” is an endurance event that is both physically and mentally demanding. The event takes the form of a one-person relay with a pivot control and a series of loops—meaning you get the thrill of trying all loops and legs yourself! A rogaine is also offered as part of the Classic. The event was founded by the Wairarapa Orienteering Club, and the M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of Wayne Cretney, a Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987.
