A Mt Cook resident explains why a flyover would be bad for the city
- Wellington Scoop
- I would like to attend the Wellington Regional Council meeting when they discuss the traffic around the Basin Reserve. But I cannot, because it’s being held during a business day. Such meetings should really be held at times when community representatives would be more likely to attend. Though I can’t get to the meeting, I want regional councillors to be aware of my opposition to raised-roading around the Basin Reserve. Neither of the two raised road options will do anything to enhance the Basin environment.

Whither Cuba?
- Eye of the Fish
- Gosh – that was a surprise! Our venerated local broadsheet, el Domino Postale, appears to have gone and written an excellent, thoughtful article on what we need to do with Cuba St. Have they got a new reporter perhaps, one who is actually interested in matters more important than cute doggies or cats stuck up trees? There is hope, at least – keep an eye out on Nikki McDonald. The article raises some serious points, which I think that we have also raised before – what to do with a street whose charm lies in it’s eclectic collection of semi derelict buildings?

The consultants who prefer asphalt to a green park
- Wellington Scoop
- Yes, you read that right – Opus could think of only one reason why green space stretching from Government House, in front of local schools and across to the Basin Reserve would be a good idea. But they could think of four reasons why the green space would be a bad idea.

The mayor wins the vote: the council decides to support a tunnel, not a flyover
- Wellington Scoop
- “No one in Mount Victoria wants the flyover,” said Councillor Iona Pannett. “No one.” And no one at yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington City Council dared to disagree with her. Not even seven councillors who kept insisting that the flyover would be a good idea.

Option X is affordable

- I hope the Wellington City Council doesn’t give up on its efforts to get the roading improvements that are best for the city, in spite of the government’s short-sighted attitude towards tunnels. The dubious transport solution for Wellington: the cheapest option
- Wellington Scoop
- Wellington city councillors were told yesterday that the government will not pay for Option X. What would be best for the city is not acceptable for the politicians. They want the cheapest possible deal. Not that the government delivered this decision directly. The information emerged at a briefing meeting, almost as a throwaway line, in response to a question from a councillor who asked: “In terms of funding for Option X, what are the chances of the government fronting up with the extra money?”

Weekly Report for Sunday Oct.9
- Wellington Runners & Walkers (WRW)
- Hi Everybody The weather makers seem to have stuffed things up for this Sunday. Instead of the situation that has prevailed for the past two months where the weather has been blissful during the week, and rats on the Sunday, we seem to have the reversal. Wild wet and windy weather for the past few days and it is going to be fine and sunny for weekend.

Basin Reserve flyover: councillors being advised to accept the unacceptable
- Wellington Scoop
- Wellington City Councillors have been told that a flyover alongside the Basin Reserve will have seriously significant negative consequences. Yet they’re being advised to shrug off these problems, and to support the flyover rather than Option X which doesn’t require an elevated road. Councillors should not agree to this bad advice.

Roundabout Rigmarole
- Keith Johnson
- The sauce is still flying as Wellington tries to choke down the meat ball and spaghetti junction that constitutes Wellington's Basin Reserve Road Interchange. In a cold serve from public officials and politicians, the public is (as often) being given scraps served on a dirty plate - but left with an empty feeling and an empty pocket. I’ll try to make some sense of the real issues, just for the record.

Option X
- Eye of the Fish
- Following on from the usual tired old grumpy pro-road editorial in the Dom Post, which came to the conclusion that pursuing Option X would be a waste of time, perhaps it is time for a less jaded eye to look at the arguments for, and against. First up, and to some, most importantly, i guess that we have to address the question of cost. The DomPost identifies that Option X may cost up to $165m, which does sound like a heck of a lot of money, and says that the “agency’s preferred option” would only cost $75m. Well, that’s a slam dunk right there, isn’t it? One option more than twice as much as the other? Those damn pesky architects proposing being profligate with the public purse? Except that, no, i reckon that the Dom Post figures are wrong.

Midnight in Paris - Movie Night fundraiser

Next Monday 10 Oct they are holding a special advance fundraiser screening of Woody Allen's new film Midnight in Paris at the Penthouse Cinema in Brooklyn. With an ensemble cast including Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody and Marion Cotillard, this is Allen at his best, funny, insightful and with a touch of magic at work, as he explores his abiding themes of love and neuroses in the City of Light.
