Mayor’s knickers in twist over cycle lanes
- Eye of the Fish
- It’s not unusual for mayoral cycling fanatic Celia Wade-Brown to advocate for cycle lanes. While her recent support for road building has caused some among us to query her how green her credentials are – one thing for certain is that if there’s a road to be built there’ll be cycle lanes attached to it.

The rates go up, then up and down
- Wellington Scoop
- The Wellington City Council yesterday announced an add-on to next year’s budget – an extra $120,000 “to improve community emergency preparedness.” In the same announcement, we’re told that the average rates increase is going up to 4.4 per cent from the previously announced 4.3 per cent. Curiously, the council also tells us that rates increases for homeowners and commercial property owners will be coming down.

Messages of Support
- Downstage Theatre
- Today, a banner went up on the Cambridge Tce side of the Hannah Playhouse that’s very different from our usual billboards. It’s an 'open letter' addressed to Christchurch, and right now it’s almost blank. We’re inviting our guests and the people of Wellington to come up and write their messages of love and support, draw a picture, or just sign. When it’s full, we’ll send it to the office of the Mayor Bob Parker.

The disappearance of nine car parks, and the decline of a heritage shopping precinct
- Wellington Scoop
- n November 2008, road works were started to resurface and widen Riddiford Street in Newtown, from the southern end to the heritage shopping precinct at the intersection of John Street and Adelaide Road. The contractor put up a sign saying the work would take a month. But it took two and a half months, finishing about the middle of February 2009.

Gerry Brownlee – please cancel Transmission Gully
- Eye of the Fish
- There is a road proposal, with a cost to benefit ratio that flies out the window, for a road that goes up an earthquake fault line, is steeper for longer than Ngauranga Gorge, and is going to cost over a billion $$, which neither central nor local government has the money to finance. On a list of projects that need to be cancelled to pay for the rebuilding of Christchurch, I’d put this one right at the very top. Wouldn’t you?
