      • It’s nice to see some solid local news reporting over at new Wellington website The Examiner. The Examiner says it aims to be “… a site where we look deeper and think harder about the city we live in and the issues that matter to us. It is also a forum for telling Wellingtonians’ stories, especially for people who would not otherwise have a voice.” Neat. Welcome, The Examiner.

    • The Old Shebang of Cuba Street
      • The National Library has joined the Flickr Commons project, whacking up many of their photos on Flickr. At the moment, there's not much from Wellington, but we're hoping that will change as more are uploaded. One particular Wellington delight, however, is a set of photos of a ramshackle house on Cuba Street called the Old Shebang (shebang in this instance means dwelling). And as well as that, Goo

All events will be held in Rutherford House in the Pipitea campus - starting at 4.00pm with Adrian Leaman, continuing at 5.30 with McBride Charles Ryan, and then finishing up at 6.30 pm with Japanese superstar architect cardboad guru Shigeru Ban.

    • The Mighty Booth
      • After every election there are geographical analyses of voting patterns, inevitably followed by suggestions that certain regions should secede and form their own country. Such analyses are often at electorate level, but there's a lot of fine detail below that, and a cell of socialist insurgents might live just around the corner from an enclave of conservative curmudgeons. So I made the following map of Wellington voting tendencies at a booth-by-booth level.

    • Win-Win
      • Win-win Mary* is 85, little, friendly and active. When I joined Age Concern Wellington Region’s Companion Walking Service, I looked forward to walking weekly with her. We live in the same suburb. But after a couple of walks near her rest home and dozens of repetitions of how she was born, schooled and lived all her life in the area, I thought ‘I’m not sure I can do this.’ Shame... Source

    • Review: Lipstick
      • How do I even begin to describe this band? I’ve been dying to write about Lipstick since I saw them for the first time at Valhalla in April. Without a doubt, Lipstick has become my favorite band to see live, and I’ve been hooked since that very first show. Since their debut as a band at the end of March, they’ve become a prominent presence in the gig scene—and for good reason.

    • Counting Down The Days
      • The impending sale of Crossways is entering its final days, with tenders due to close on 6 August. Moves are afoot with the Crossways Community Trust to finalise details of the tender the community intends putting in for the building. According to Bill Southworth, Chair of the Trust, “We are close to arriving at what we think is a fair price for Crossways, and we intend making a strong bid to retain ownership of our community house.”

    • Wellington is facing rising sea levels
      • At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

    • Squidward Tentacles washes up in Houghton Bay
      • As we all know (or at least those of us who have small children) Squidward Tentacles is an arrogant and egotistical 'octopus' who lives in an Easter Island moai and dislikes his neighbors (especially SpongeBob) for their child-like behavior. He enjoys playing the clarinet and painting self-portraits. Well, one of his close relatives washed up this rainy morning just down the road from our house at Houghton Bay. Jane helped drag it up the beach.

    • Review: Clybourne Park
      • In 1959 a couple sell their house. At 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, their neighbours casually call in to see how packing is going. During the friendly discussion information about the buyers is revealed and tempers flare. In 2009 members of a community meet at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon to discuss neighborhood covenants before the new couple in the community start making alterations. Although their lives seem similar on the surface, their motivations are different, setting up conflict.

      • Orchestra Wellington and MIXT Create Groundbreaking Virtual Reality Conductor Experience In a world first, Orchestra Wellington and Wellington interactivecompany MIXT are offering up the best seat in the house, although youwon’t want to sit down! The world premiere of the Virtual Conductor Experience is launching atthe CubaDupa Festival on Saturday 24th March from 12pm, open to thepublic and free of charge. If you stop by its shipping container installation on Leeds Street, the orchestra promises you a mind-blowing virtual arts experience, regardless of whether you’re eight or 80.Along with audio recorded by RNZ Concert, the 360° filming, editingand interactions were done by Wellington VR/AR specialists, MIXT, andputs the viewer at the centre of a symphony orchestra experience, andbrings all the emotion of a multi-sensory challenge.“The finished product immerses you into the world of the symphonyconductor, standing on the podium to lead a 90 piece orchestra as theyperform the powerful Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky in front of afull 2000 person live audience,” says Orchestra Wellington’s MarketingManager and project co-ordinator Marek Peszynski.Orchestra Wellington was an award winner in 2016 with its New Zealandmade 360° video. With MIXT’s help, Peszynski believes it’s gone onebetter with the world’s first virtual orchestra video with a full liveaudience.“We wanted to move away from the novelty factor of VR technology byplacing the user at the centre of a full live concert. That way theexperience really puts people in the moment and feels one hundredpercent real and unstaged."“More importantly we can visualise its use after the installation, with its applications in education and in accessibility of music. Butat CubaDupa we’re inviting everyone to step up and take the challenge, because once you’ve tried it you’re hooked."Following its CubaDupa release, the 360° virtual concert will launchfor free home use later this month and its makers believe its appealwill extend beyond the city’s many lounge-room conductors.

    • Thank god that's over
      • I can't claim to speak for all the Wellingtonista, but I have to say it: Sevens weekend is horrible. There's a lot of gushy talk in the main media outlets about how colourful and vibrant and alive the city becomes, but one could say the same about a nasty fungal rash. Many of us who live in the central city can attest to how colourful and vibrant and alive the city is most of the time, and in an a
