    • Ten Mad Minutes and the Slapperz go Down
      • An injury-plagued Slapperz journeyed to Petone Memorial 4 to take on the Armani's. With Steve-O and Barts on the sideline nursing aches and pains, we were all hoping for an injury free match. No luck there, I'm afraid, with Gazz limping off after just 1 minute with a nasty looking recurrence of his injury. Fortunately, Striker Barts gallantly came to the rescue and played the remaining 89 minutes up front.

      • Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? This Sunday we will consider where we find ourselves – how do we measure up with what we want? – and how can we prepare ourselves for what is just ahead of us? See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

    • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth
      • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth April 10, 2019 Partners Porirua was proud to host the official launch of the Youth Driver Licence Scheme announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. The scheme, funded by the NZTA Community Road Safety Fund and the Ministry of Social Development, beginning 1 June 2019, will enable young people on benefits or in care to access free driving lessons and tests.   “A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. It’s a vital tool and opens doors to education and jobs.,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. This is exciting news for Partners Porirua as a Youth Service provider, running its own Drive 4 Life programme since 2007.  Partners Porirua also facilitate a Community Driver Mentor Programme enabling disadvantaged youth to practise their driving skills with fully licensed adult driving mentors. “The announcement means Partners Porirua can assist more of our most vulnerable young people to get their driver licence, and increase their employment prospects and independence,” said Executive Director Michelle Robinson. • Website Tweaks and Fixes
      • G'day everyone, A quick note to point out a couple of changes to the website. Firstly, can advise that the Wellington VHF Group position paper on is now available for download. This was missing for a while, and was redirecting people back to the front page. We invite your comments on this document. Also it may have been noticed that the menu structure in the left hand frame of this website has shrunk. As we've been populating the site with more and more static content, it became necessary to activate the 'collapse' option on the menu items - they're still there, you just need to click on the appropriate category and the list of sub-options will appear. read more

    • The Dead C are coming to town
      • I wouldn't wanna put money on it or anything, but I'm pretty sure that the last time legendary NZ noise-rockers The Dead C (wikipedia) played in Wellington was when they supported Sonic Youth on their Dirty tour in 1993. And to be frank, with an utterly transcendant performance in the face of much tribulation, mopped the floor with them. Now they're playing at the City Gallery on Saturday night. It's free. What the hell else do you need to know?

      • The first Wellington Phoenix home pre-season game has been moved for the second time. Originally announced for the Basin Reserve, at some point it was switched to Newtown Park and now, according to the official site it has been moved to Westpac Stadium due to “concerns that Newtown Park would not have the capacity to cope with the big crowd expected.” Sunday at 2.00pm is kick-off time and the tickets are only $10 (and free for under 16s).

    • Laying a campaign trail
      • I am afraid that I have become caught up in my electioneering – such that I have now committed myself to walking every street in the Southern Ward, dropping a calling card in every letter box, and talking in an open and friendly way to those fellow citizens who are out and about. Since I am largely a house husband at present and the boys are at school, my week-day mornings are pretty much free. So the map is a report back on progress so far.

    • Wgtn Car Ban Talk
      • Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast today called for private cars to be banned from the Golden Mile within 10 to 20 years, following planned developments such as opening Manners Mall to buses, overhauling roads near the Basin Reserve and building a second Mt Victoria Tunnel And the Greens say they support the proposal to make the Golden Mile car free with only public transport, but said Wellington should give priority to light rail and pedestrian space in the Golden Mile now, not in 10 to 20 years.

    • Take 10 Arvo’s are now in Johnsonville!
      • We are now on week four in Johnsonville and although we had a few rangatahi visit, it still wasn’t pumping so we decided to put on a free sausage sizzle last Friday. In preparation, we handed out flyers to schools in the area and mustered up a bunch of students from around Johnsonville. We cooked roughly 100 sausages and it is safe to say they were all given to happy folks passing by the Collective Community Hub (CCH). We had Tony and Dan from CCH on the BBQ who were fantastic local assets, as well as our Take 10 volunteer team. We were thrilled at the success of the sausage sizzle so stay tuned for future BBQs!

    • Parking for sensible cities: webinar 2
      • Equity, residents’ parking, behaviour change, and some myths busted – by popular demand, expert insights on parking plus some Wellington changemaking Following our much-viewed first webinar (check it out here), TUI Climate Community and Millions of Mothers with the Wellington Urbanerds are proud to have brought you transport and economics expert Stuart Donovan on everyone’s favourite topic! This one was a bit different: in addition to Stuart speaking on some particularly hot topics of parking, we heard about one area ripe for change. Check out the webinar video courtesy of Millions of Mothers:Parking: how we behave, fairness, and price Stuart’s presentation focussed on a few key aspects including the longer-run interesting questions like how people change our behaviour in response to parking prices, and the equity effects of pricing parking (inspired by questions from councillors concerned about the effects of the proposed new Parking Policy on poorer people). Stu’s slides are here [PDF 2.7 MB]Residents’ parking: what’s with that? Following Stu, we heard from Wellingtonian Oliver Bruce (of Urbanerds fame). He highlighted a particularly amazing feature of the current system: massive subsidies (underpricing) for residents’ parking. They’re skewing people’s choices in our transport system, in a generally bad way, but since the last webinar Oliver and Connect Wellington have a path forward… Oliver’s slides are here [611KB PDF]. So many questionsWhen it was time for questions, we summarised the areas of interest in the chat and Isabella fired the questions to Stuart and Oliver. There was lots of interest in equity, and the ethics of charging for access to publicly owned space. There was a hunger for case-studies of cities that had successfully communicated to their citizenry the good news that managing parking well is overall progressive (i.e. reduces inequality). The catch-22 of on-street vs off-street parking was a big topic, as people like residents’ associations and councillors react to the current (poorly managed) on-street parking, and feel resistant to good developments that don’t provide many carparks. There was also discussion of the opportunity cost of space, and the extent to which home buyers factor in transport options to their purchase price decisions (or assume they’ll get free street parking and grizzle once they’ve moved in with their car/s). (There’s also a good little discussion on Stuart’s Twitter feed, worth a look)Help Wellington do parking better There was a lot of interest from our audience in helping improve parking management in Wellington, reflecting its huge importance to our city’s transport system and its influence on affordable housing. It’s a complicated space and good comprehensive change will take years – see here for more. But the good news is that all kinds of contributions can make a difference.  There’s something for everyone! And the process of change will take years, as observed We’re also keen to have more learning and discussion type initiatives, with more local voices and insight. If you’ve got suggestions for events, speakers, stunts or nifty schemes, or are just interested in finding out more about how you could help, drop us a line. Meantime, make sure you’re on the Urbanerds signup list so we can alert you to the next in-person gatherings and the next webinars! • Farewell Pānui Te Motu Kairangi
      • After careful consideration, the team behind Pānui Te Motu Kairangi – the Miramar Peninsula Newsletter – has decided to end on a high note, announcing that the lucky 13th edition, published in Spring this year, will be the last. Since its first edition in December 2020, around 50,000 copies of this printed community newsletter have been hand-delivered to peninsula letterboxes. Pānui shared local events and stories and reflected the diversity of the Miramar, Seatoun and Strathmore Park communities. Pānui was a collaboration between the Miramar and Maupuia Community Centre, Seatoun Village Hall and Strathmore Park Community Centres. The publication team was committed to Pānui remaining largely advertisement-free and says that the decision not to continue it was due to the ongoing pressures to fund it.
