      • A regional park above Shelly Bay on the Miramar Peninsula? Or houses? Or is there room for both? A DomPost report today says that hundreds of new homes could be fast tracked on the Peninsula. Michael Daly writes that iwi Taranaki Whānui and developer Ian Cassels are applying for consent to build 600 to 700 houses on 8 hectares of the former Mt Crawford Prison which closed in 2012.

      • Hi Everyone. One last weekly report for the year. AGM and Turkey Trot Well done Jillian in organising the Turkey Trot and laying out the route. Admittedly there were sections of the track where crampons would have come in useful as one approached the snowline, but everyone enjoyed the challenge. And congratulations to Brian Pearl who won the turkey by coming in 7 seconds within his estimated time.

      • Another light-ish week of cinema releases to report: Readings have so much confidence in the new Rob Schneider prison-comedy Big Stan that the only evening sessions are at a deadening 9.20pm at night. According to IMDb this is the first film directed by the Deuce Bigelow star which means we now have the phrase "a film by Rob Schneider" to terrify and depress us. Also Sky City Queensgate.

    • Building Update - 1 September 2022
      • We thought we would give you an update about what has happened in regards to our building recently - which in short is not much!As part of our MAP - Taking Flight process we were looking at some options of what could buildings be used for in this parish in the future and I am sure that has sparked some discussion and some ideas that might be floating around. The Brick Building In July, we received a letter from the Council asking us for an engineering report as they had identified that the building was potentially an earthquake risk. In working with the Diocese we provided the engineering report that was done a while ago (which subsequently meant we could not use the building). Therefore you will see on the doors of the building there are now official notices from the council stating the risk of the building's earthquake rating. It also states on it that we have until 2 July 2037 to rectify the situation.

      • The Wellington urban class really wants light rail. And why wouldn’t they? Light rail is sexy transit…cruise smoothly, comfortably, and quickly to the local tiki bar; no more lurching starts and stops, no more endless waits behind four other buses boarding at the stop on Willis Street, no more fighting with cars for road space. And so there seems to be a grumbling undercurrent regarding the position of the Ngauranga-to-Airport strategic study report.

    • Triangular Parks
      • With a brief flurry of media attention last week, and typical fluffy media attention more on Miley Cyrus than the ideas inside, the Wellington 2040 vision was confirmed by a Council meeting. Today, there will be the opening of two container consultation stations (one in Te Aro Park and one on the Waterfront?) which will unveil some of the report. And finally, next week, the public may get a chance to really see what has been proposed.

    • No more please
      • With the new $180m convention opening soon, it was startling to see that a city councillor says the city needs to have another new venue. Councillor Tamatha Paul (quoted at the end of a DomPost report about the loss of car parks) said she supported opening a medium-sized venue. “That’s going to fill the city, the hotels, the restaurants and the hearts of our city.” Which is of course the claim that was made to justify spending $180m on the convention centre.

      • There was a shock horror scoop in the Dominion Post today, with the headline Wind farm 'visible from Island Bay to Waikanae'. A leaked report purports to show that the proposed Puketiro wind farm would be visible from all across the Wellington region, and a spokesperson for a group called "Preserve Pauatahanui" said that "the leaked information shows that all Wellingtonians should be concerned".Does this mean that the wind farm will be a dominating presence across the region? Hardly.

      • I am afraid that I have become caught up in my electioneering – such that I have now committed myself to walking every street in the Southern Ward, dropping a calling card in every letter box, and talking in an open and friendly way to those fellow citizens who are out and about. Since I am largely a house husband at present and the boys are at school, my week-day mornings are pretty much free. So the map is a report back on progress so far.

    • Debate Over Housing Intensification ... Intensifies
      • The debate over the future of Wellington’s housing rages on, as Council continues to grapple with the 220 pages of bullshittery brought to it by the Independent Hearings Panel (IHP) The most recent report brought to council by the IHP contains all of its recommendations for Wellington’s District Plan—the rulebook for urban planning in Te Whanganui-a-Tara—developed via a public consultation process that it has been undergoing since February of last year. However, as pointed out by a number of commentators, many of the recommendations made by the IHP are, frankly, bonkers.

      • In the line of an old Abba song, The Winner takes it All, and so it was in the 2008 Wellington Civic Trust awards last night. A friendly Fish-monger sends in this report from the ceremony in Te Papa: The evening started off promptly, no time for drinkies (or Studio Pacific - who missed out on the news they had won the first prize of the evening by a good 5 minutes!), before leaping straight into the Awards ceremonies. First up was the award for best building in Wellington (constructed in the last 3 years).

      • Readers with long memories or empty lives will recall that the report of the first-round game against Wests (http://www.bnu.org.nz/sca-match-reports/16-masters-3/173-bnu-masters-3-v-western-suburbs-4310) ended with the warning that the return match would be tighter. And so it was, even though Wests are the only team below us on the table - their defence was much better organised, their keeper was in that position by choice, and one midfielder in particular caused us a lot of trouble in the second half.

      • There have been hundreds of earthquakes, if not thousands, in the days following last week’s Seddonator (TM name courtesy of Eye of the Fish, conflation of Seddon and Dominator). A nice little wobbly number just then (11.10am) prompted me to go to the Geonet website and check – it was a 4.9 in the middle of the Cook Strait again – or, as Geonet say, 30km east of Seddon. There’s something big going on down there, even if the one remaining resident of Seddon could only just be bothered to report it in.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/08/2020 - 18:15 - 22:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  6 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 Reports of waka capsized 800m off shore from Shell (near Goat Pt) and 6 people in the water. 2 other waka in the vicinity trying to assist. Police activated us and we launched MR2. Nothing found on location. 2 surf boats training in the area reported seeing waka heading back up the channel to Onepoto harbour. Called Police to report this and they confirmed that they were safe and well and had just sent a stand-down. Returned to base.     • Dinghy broken down off Pukerua Bay
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/02/2011 - 21:00 - 23:50 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 During training a report came in of a dinghy that had broken down up at Pukerua Bay with three people on board. CRV Pelorus took some new recruits off Trust Porirua Rescue (that had been training) and TPR immediately responded to the scene. Light was fading by this stage and finding the dinghy in the dark was very difficult as they did not have any form of lighting or signalling equipment with them, no VHF, and their cellphone battery was dying - an all too common occurance!     • Questionable numbers in Regional Council plan to close Kaiwharawhara station
      • The reason for closure is that the overbridge which was built in 1934 has recently been deemed unsafe because too little has been spent on maintenance and it is now heavily corroded from the sea air. As a result the station has been temporarily closed. Tranz Metro and the Regional Council are now considering what to do ‘long term’ with the least cost scenario to repair the bridge requiring half a million dollars. However, the mention of this work apparently triggers the legislative need for a passenger ramps to meet wheelchair users which would raise the cost to $2.4 million. So the Regional Council Engineers want to close the station, citing – in their report to be put to the Council tomorrow – that only 14 commuters use the service in the AM peak.

    • Why has the Basin Reserve Trust failed to do its job?
      • In today's editorial, The Wellingtonian editor Joseph Romanos inaccurately and unfairly characterizes the Save The Basin Reserve Campaign as anti-roading: "But instead of fronting a politically suicidal campaign called Ban Cars, they chose the more emotive Save the Basin, their logic being that a major road linking Buckle St to the Mt Victoria Tunnel would have a detrimental impact on the sportsmen doing their thing at the Basin. The news that the Basin Reserve trustees had negotiated for a grandstand to be built at the northern end of the ground leaves these campaigners in a quandary. Romanos may be using the inflammatory language and approach of tabloid journalism - trying to report the conflict rather than the issue - but he does raise a key question: why has the Basin Reserve Trust failed to to its job?

The Annual Performance Report (financial) is included there also.Printed copies of the Annual Report will be available closer to the time of the Annual General Meeting, which is after the Sunday morning service on the 30th October 2022 in the St John’s Centre.   FELLOWSHIP GROUP Our next speaker will be Ken Edgecombe, who will share with us memories of his time as Chaplain at St Margaret College, the school that St John’s in the City built!We will meet on Tuesday 25th October 2022 at 11am in the hall. Please bring finger food for lunch.   NAME TAGS As we turn our Vision into action, one very easy and practical way we can build community is to wear a name tag.Please keep your name tag on when you come over for Morning Tea in the Centre, and there will be a receptacle to drop your name tag into before you leave.   ONE CONFERENCE This leadership training conference for the Presbyterian Church is being hosted at St John’s in November (2pm 17th of November - 2:30pm Saturday the 19th of November).We will have many folks travelling from out of town and many have asked if there is any possibility of being billeted. Would you like to consider billeting out-of-town attendees to the conference?Conference attendees will have all meals provided at the conference except breakfast.
