Nearly ran aground on the south end of Mana Island after being caught in the tide with no wind to sail. MR1 located off the north end of Mana Island after they drifted north in the incoming tide.     • We had our 1st game on the new {Porirua} turf on Sunday and came away with a 2 - 0 win against YWCA! The new turf is very bouncy, is like playing on shag pile carpet! Hopefully will settle down after some use! A great goal scored by Sonja Jeffs on the left wing, was in the right spot at the right time for a beautiful cross from the right and nicely swept in! 2nd goal was a great deflection into the goal by Chrissy Potaka Kelly after a hit to the 'spot'! Good work by the Team! Lisa

Vessel located and towed to mooring behind Mana Island. Moored off and mechanic taken on board the following morning of 29/12. Engine successfully started. No further support required. Actual time (5 hrs) was split across two days, but is reported as a single block here.     • Wellington United Diamonds had their third five goal win in a row on Saturday as the downed Petone 5-0 in a W-League game at Newtown Park. The win means they stay in first place on goal difference, but Palmerston North Marist have managed to close the gap to just one goal with a 6-0 win over Seatoun. It took Diamonds just nine minutes to open the scoring through Charlotte Wilford Carroll. It wasn't long before Jemma Robertson thought she had got on the scoresheet tapping in a cross from Dani Ohlsson, but it was somewhat inexplicably called offside and she had to wait to the second half, getting two goals in four minutes to take her tally for the season to 22.

    Review: Twenty Minutes to Nine

    • am genuinely lost for words, trying to describe Twenty Minutes to Nine. It was nostalgic, raw, grim and witty, heart-sinking and furious and so painfully wise. Absolutely phenomenal. The show is personal even before it starts. I’m sitting in the front of two rows of seats, so there’s no doubt it’ll be an intimate show. Amanda (Santuccione (They/Her), the show’s writer and performer) asks what we’re up to afterwards, if we’d be alright to wait another 5 minutes for the last few people. In the end it’s me, a mother-and-adult-son duo, three other women and Amanda. We chat back and forth about hills and penguins, public transport and spilt beer. Then suddenly, with only the quieting of the house music, it begins.

    October 2009 Update

    • Maranui Surf Life Saving Club
    • On Monday 5th October 2009 there was a meeting held between Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Wellington City Council officers. This meeting was called by the council to discuss a new proposed outcome for the fire damaged Maranui building; as revealed by the Dominion Post on Friday the 2nd October. The concept they put to the Maranui members was to demolish the 4 council buildings on the Lyall Beach and replace them with a purpose built “Super Building” which would incorporate Lyall Bay surf club, Maranui surf club, NZAAT Beach House Art Gallery, toilet and shower facilities etc. Maranui Surf Club members were surprised and disappointed with yet another delay and are unsure how this new concept is relevant to the repair of the Maranui building.

He received prizes from the New Zealand Book Council and Sport, as well as $100 and the opportunity to attend a masterclass at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University last weekend. Seb’s poem is included below: Old man I’m sitting and I watch the old man from the street rest and unfurl from his linen a pack of Dunhills. He twists off the cellophane and eyes his catch with that vintage gleam of noon-stripped old lowlifes, naked, howling at their cigarette moons. Cars and their drivers blur on by, each turning their heads as if to say yes man, light that cigarette for all you’re worth.  Yes, man lights it. Draws each drag out long like a bones player shifting keys. He exhales each time only a whisper of thin smoke-suns that twist, convulse mid-air. I have a moment when I think of my father and I driving along an afternoon’s length of country road; we could’ve been both fifteen naive and I feel as if right here and now I’ll weep watching this old new nomad smoke, pulling our car breakneck along the asphalt, filling the valleys and valleys and valleys, hauling us through them, here to someplace to every place, maybe, most likely, somewhere unideal, where infants are born dead but still live. My father and I, our cities become flame, the skyscrapers strip the blue skies, haul from the seas an urgent thunderstorm now upon us all and still. The old man smokes. Almost at the filter now. Watching our cars roll on by. Looking with those eyes at each and every person as if to say yes man, go on your way, go on your way. IYNT Winners, Minsk, 2019 WHS students Ryan Bright and Lydia Acton were part of the winning NZ team at the 2019 International Young Naturalists’ Tournament. Lydia was the team captain, having also competed in the 2018 tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia. Ryan reported his solution to problem 7, “Burning Glass” in the final against Croatia and Switzerland. He scored the highest score in the final, which was won by NZ with 47.9 points, to Croatia’s 45.9 and Switzerland’s 45.6.          The team’s achievements have been widely recognised, including this tweet from the National Science advisor! Sports Underwater Hockey HUGE congratulations go out to all our Underwater Hockey teams for their fantastic season this year.  Our Junior Open A team won bronze medals in Friday night’s CSW Premier finals, defeating Hutt Valley High School 6-2 in their playoff game. The boys were hoping for better after entering the playoffs in second place, however they suffered a shock 3-0 loss to Scots College in their semi final. The bronze medal is still a massive achievement, and the first medal won by a WHS team for as long as Murray Chisholm can remember. This team and our Senior Girls team will contest the national championships in Wellington at WRAC from September 6th-8th. WHS may have lost the game 3 – 0 but it was an evenly matched contest and our team benefited from the opportunity to take on Tararua College.

    • During the month of August, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a total of 13 incidents.  We attended six fires, from the very small (a smoking light-fixture) to the extremely large "4th Alarm" factory fire in Petone on the 23rd August.  We also attended four medical emergencies during the month and there were three false alarms. Even with another fairly significant (magnitute 6.6) earthquake on 16th August, the Wellington region seemenly dodged another bullet and the brigade had absolutely no earthquake-related incidents to attend to.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that that remains the case for many, many years to come!     • 4 October – 15 December 2024 Vaiei Tupuna is an exhibition of contemporary tapa from across Moana Nui that brings together newly commissioned responses to taonga from the collections of Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection and The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, alongside historic and contemporary artworks that acknowledge the tupuna and atua who activate this practice. Gifted by Sarah Vaki, elder and master tapa maker from Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas, the title of the exhibition translates as “heritage of our ancestors”. Vaiei Tupuna takes up these shared genealogies and histories of tapa to celebrate the vitality of the artform in the present, and to extend and build knowledge for the future. Hina, the atua of tapa makers, is present throughout Vaiei Tupuna.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 02/03/2010 - 23:30 - Wed, 03/03/2010 - 00:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Police received a call from a member of the public regarding a sighting of a light flashing intermittently off the coast of Plimmerton towards Mana Island. Coastguard Mana were tasked to go out and search for the source of the light to ensure that it was not a distress signal. A yellow "special mark" was found floating near the "reef" in the entrance to Plimmerton. This mark was a research buoy that had a yellow flashing light on top of it that flashed the sequence of 5 flashes every 15 seconds.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 22/01/2012 - 16:30 - 17:10 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 A float plane was having difficulty taxiing to the jetty in high winds inside Porirua Harbour. The pilot contacted the Fire Service to request standby assistance and they contacted Coastguard Mana for on-water assistance in case there were any difficulties with getting to the jetty safely. Incident Management Team members from Coastguard Mana and the local fire crew attended from the shore. The plane safely taxied to the intended jetty and no further assistance was required. Instead, Wellington's only New Zealand Sevens contracted player, Simpkins, has her sights set on the upcoming second Women's World Cup Sevens series and possibly a berth in the 2016 Olympic Games squad...

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 08/07/2012 - 18:00 - 21:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 Police call out to a 14' runabout reported broken down 2.5km east of Makara.  Vessel was located by police launch Lady Liz IV half kilometer off Makara.  Police stayed with the vessel until Trust Porirua Rescue arrived on scene to take the boat under tow.  Boat was towed back to Mana Marina by coastguard. A person on shore reported the grounding to Coastguard who went out to see if we could assist. Harbour masters team responded and requested CGM support to get the yacht to a lift out point. Harbours team were pumping the yacht out but it sank before the CRV could get to the scene. • • Metlink Encourages Early Bedtimes for Students—Without Consultation

    • Students having a night out will soon no longer be able to take the night bus home, after the Greater Wellington Regional Council agreed to scrap the service last week. Neither VUWSA nor Te Tira Ahu Pae—the Massey equivalent—were consulted on the changes. Metlink’s night buses run between 1 and 4.30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings, providing a cheap(ish) option for students and others in town to get home safely. With low patronage, Metlink made the call to ax them in favour of high-frequency (the 1, 2, 7, ect.) services running later into the night and starting earlier in the morning.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 21/01/2016 - 11:00 - Tue, 02/02/2016 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  4 Total Volunteer Hours:  1160 Smasher, a 27" Pelin motor launch split its hull coming off a wave as it was leaving Porirua harbour (vicinity of the outer reef). Smasher was in transit with another vessel which stood by her Mana Rescue1 was tasked to support by police The owner was able to put the vessel ashore on Mana Island (just north of shingle point) before MR1 arrived on scene. MR1 was able to confirm that the crew of smasher were safe, then start to render assistance to strip the vessel and secure her on shore and stern to sea. • • Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s

    • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

    • The Upper Hutt P2 mens team which has the largest squad in the past eight years found itself unusually short on Saturday - with only one sub. Still, Playing against Varsity, last years P2 winners, the team fought well. Victoria scored some very good goals (and luck seemed to be on thier side!). Upper hutt lost 5-1 in a game that could have been alot closer with us narrowly missing the goal on at least two occasions. Varstity broke away and scored very quickly on occasions but the general feeling amongst the team was that we dominated posession but unfortunately did not convert it into points. The jubilant celebrations from Varsity every time they scored was a tribute to the quality opposition they were up against. Goal was scored by someone who would like to remain anonymous (modest chap!) Murray

    • The cost of food has gone up 8.4% in the last three years[1] ̶ a bigger rise than the general Consumers Price Index. The high cost of food is reflected in the figures for child poverty that are being widely discussed as part of the election campaigns[2]. “How do people manage?” asks Stephanie McIntyre, Director of Downtown Community Ministry. “We know that it’s a real struggle for some because of those who come to the DCM foodbank – and it’s the same for other foodbanks in Wellington.” “That’s why we’re asking DCM supporters and all Wellingtonians to contribute to the Food Appeal this coming Saturday, 19 November, organised by Wellington Foodbank Coalition members to replenish their stocks of food.”
