      • The band met at the bandrooms at nine am, and from there we car pooled out to Southwards. The band then performed a Hymn and Test piece in the morning session. The hymn "Dear Lord and Father" went pretty well with no major worries. Without leaving the stage the band then played their test piece entitled "The Force of Destiny" by well known classical composer Verdi, this piece is technically very demanding, and whilst the band played well, a few sections of the band would've perhaps liked one or two more rehearsals to work on some of the harder tutti passages.

    • Victory in Localpoint 7s
      • Saturday September 26th saw 3 teams entered in the 2009 Localpoint 7s’ at Trentham Memorial Park coached by Thomas Russell assisted by CCO Mason Malagamaali’i. Two teams were entered in the Open Division and one in the Under 20 Division, with Wainui, OBU and MSP the only other clubs entering this many teams! The Ories Yellow team in Pool A defeated Avalon, P-Plim and Wainui to progress to the Championship Round while the Ories Black team in Pool B with OBU Green, Wainui Green Johnsonville almost made it into a semi as well but lost to eventual pool winners Johnsonville.

    • Route announced for Wellington Northern Corridor
      • The NZ Transport Agency Board has announced key decisions on the route for the Wellington Northern Corridor, marking a major milestone in the strategic development of this section of State Highway 1. The corridor, identified by Government earlier this year as one of seven roads of national significance, will be developed as a four lane expressway from Levin to Wellington Airport. The corridor will be built in sections with the overall route substantially completed within the next ten years. Today’s announcement includes the decision to progress Transmission Gully rather than the Coastal Highway Upgrade as part of the Wellington Northern Corridor.

It has been a long time coming – a couple of years at least, but this is one of the most important consultations that the Council has ever asked the Wellington public for their opinion on.     • On the passing of Ben Hana
      • On 15 Jan our Courtenay Pl neighbour Ben Hana, more commonly known as Blanket Man or Brother, passed away at Wellington Hospital. In the days since an impromptu ‘shrine’ has appeared on the wall of the ANZ building where Ben was most commonly seen over the last few years. The shrine, like Ben, is destined to become controversial. Simultaneously creative and destructive, as it spreads over the faux-grecian façade of the bank questions and conflicts will arise as to whether it should be left alone, or washed clean. A fitting tribute, and one that would’ve no doubt amused the man himself.

      • 8 Days a week - There are probably a few names for playing 3 games in 8 days and Coach Killer is probably one. On Saturday Ories had the Premiers at Maoribank, Senior 1sts at Ngati Toa, Senior 2nds at Delaney and Colts at Polo, all playing at the same time so to say resources were stretched is an understatement. To come away with 3 wins out of 4 is a great result and a credit to the coaches and players. On Wednesday the Prems, S1st and S2nd play again then on Saturday once more – certainly not the greatest decision by the WRFU.

    • Fair Fares For Wellington
      • Tony Randle, Chair, Johnsonville Progressive Association. No-one likes to raise public transport fares, especially when so many are reliant on this service. But these costs have increased so rail users can travel in new trains on upgraded track and use upgraded stations. The approach of the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is to raise fares equally for both bus and rail users. It seems doubly unfair in raising fares on bus users who cannot benefit from the new trains when their own service will receive little service improvement. In effect, increased bus fares are being used to pay for increased rail costs.

      • I’ve decided that Transport Agency people should be given more chances to meet the public. And we should get more chances to talk to them, too. I met some of them at their public information day on Saturday. Their cynical process of “public consultation” hasn’t worked. But talking face to face is a different experience. Not, though, on the subject of their Basin flyover proposal, which they have been trained to defend at all costs, and for which they’ve created a new set of drawings such as the one above showing a couple sunbathing under the overhead traffic.

    • Call-out stats - July 2013
      • Despite the Wellington region being rocked by a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake on 21st July, Stokes Valley Volunteer Fire Brigade attended less than half the number of call-outs in July than in June. The storm that hit the region back in June kept the brigade much busier than the recent earthquake did, which, in a funny kind of way, is probably a good thing (considering the utter devastation that the people down in Canterbury have had to deal with). The brigade were called out to just two earthquake-related incidents, including one to Hutt Hospital.

It aims to encourage conversations about the uncertain future of work for many young people. These conversations are important as preparation for the challenges ahead. Prayers, liturgy and worksheets are available for downloading from the Caritas website. School visits are planned for September.

    • Sweet win for UHCF 11th grade team at Easter Tourney
      • Congratulations to the UHCF 11th Grade Storm on a FANTASTIC effort at the KCU Easter tournament. To go through the day unbeaten, score 11 goals and concede only 1 is a brilliant achievement for any team, but to beat Onslow the way they did in that final was outstanding. In the 5 to 6 years I’ve been coaching it was probably one of the gutsiest performances I have seen from a group of kids – they didn’t give an inch, but played hard and fair! Well deserved boys on taking the trophies away this year!!! Important to remember too, these are the twelve best 11th Grade teams in the Wellington District!

    • Director’s Message: The little festival that could
      • I am very relieved to be writing this. We did it! Verb Readers & Writers Festival happened and we are now looking back and feeling incredibly lucky. It wasn’t the Festival we planned but what a magical time in our history it turned out to be. Thanks to our incredible audiences it was a near sell out and the atmosphere throughout was one of delighted disbelief giving way to heartwarming connection. I think many of us couldn’t quite believe the festival was real until it was nearly over. We had spent so many months planning, unpinning, re-planning and then planning for the plan to fall over again.

    • The threat to the Central Library
      • For many of us, the word “library” has comfortable connotations. It suggests rows of books in which to browse, make discoveries and pass them on to friends and family. Beyond being a resource centre for culture and practical information, a typical library is also a community meeting ground and a safe drop-in space for kids after school. It is also one of the relatively few public destinations in town where people don’t have to spend money. At present, the content and function of libraries – and the funding for them – are in flux. Those on higher incomes don’t need or use libraries as much.

      • Content Warning: Misogyny, sexual content Before I watched this show I was warned it would ‘challenge me.' Naturally, a show about incel culture should not be easy to digest. However, as the show unfolded, I found myself facing a different kind of challenge than I had expected—one that tested my empathy and ability to connect with others. As expected from the topic, the show's title, blackpill, is derived from the incel community, and its definition is essentially what the show presents. In short, the ‘blackpill ideology’ maintains that physical attractiveness is the most important factor in attracting women, and that certain physical and social factors are necessary for success.

      • Hello again, and welcome back to the Eye of the Fish. I had quite a bit of work to do, and then I needed a holiday. And what did I do on holiday? Well, I read books, of course! Yes, I am one of those old-school types that still prefers a written book to an online presence, and so I’ve been really pleased recently to see the publication of “Wellington Architecture – a Walking Guide“, a new guide book to the architecture of the capital. It’s great! I love it! And I’ve read every word and looked at every picture, from cover to cover.

    • Decision 6 - Funding the Central Library rebuild | Kōrero mai | Wellington City Council
      • Wellington’s much-loved Central Library was closed in March 2019 following an engineering assessment saying that the way the floor was designed presented a high level of potential failure in a significant earthquake. It has a similar floor design to one used in the now demolished Statistics House, where a floor collapsed in the Kaikoura earthquakes. In 2020, we ran a six-week consultation in which we asked for public feedback on five options for restoring a Central Library service in Te Ngākau Civic Square. The options all considered the resilience of the building, future proofing the library service, the connection to Te Ngākau, and the overall costs.

      • This post was going to be called “New School of Music” but then I thought – no, hold on, this could really cause a stink. What if…? Is it? Was it? No, surely not. But maybe….? Who knows? I’ve just been alerted to the revised scheme for what was at one stage known as the new “School of Music” down by the Michael Fowler Centre – or more accurately, on the site of the MFC carpark and smack bang in the viewpoint of the Amora Hotel. Amazingly, it is a full public notification, and must be costing someone millions to do this – and it closes in just a very few days. Monday?

      • The position of president of Local Government New Zealand is too important to be held by a peak oil denier. That is why I would not support Mayor Prendergast in her bid for the position. Peak oil is the most serious issue that we face on a local and global level. I made that clear while the Dompost reporter was recording proceedings. Furthermore, the mayor has shown nothing of the balancing qualities needed in a democratic role. Democracy is much bigger than one person getting their way.     • Meet Paulette - a ray of sunshine behind the wheel
      • This Bus Driver Appreciation Day, Metlink is celebrating the drivers who pull out all the stops for its network. If you’re in Kāpiti and spot a bus driver with a beaming smile behind the wheel, it’s probably Paulette. “I'm the type of person who's always waving at the other bus drivers,” Paulette says. She’s always looking out to see if she can improve someone’s day. “If I'm sitting at the traffic lights and one of my colleagues pulls up in their bus, then I'm doing a little dance to entertain them!” Paulette has been driving for UzaBus for 20 months, but it wasn’t a job she had ever considered before.
