    • First place for BRONZ
      • It was a perfect summer’s day for the inaugural annual BRONZ charity bike ride which saw over 100 bikers gather in Lower Hutt at the start of a fantastic ride up and down the Kapiti coast. The Biker’s Rights of New Zealand Wellington branch have chosen us as their charity for the year and riders and supporters came out in their droves to show their support. The ride raised an impressive $1,720, most of which came from entry fees, but the event wasn’t just about money. By the end of the day our inspector’s van was bursting at the seams as we drove away with a truck-load of toys, blankets and food that were also collected at various points along the ride. All of these donations have come along just in time to bring a little Christmas cheer to the animals in our care. The ride was a fantastic event and we would like to thank BRONZ and everyone who took part, whether on bikes or as sideline supporters – your efforts will make a huge difference.

    • The landlord mentality on the waterfront
      • I applaud the sentiments of Lowry Bay resident Tony Cranston, whose letter about the Wellington waterfront earned top position in the DomPost yesterday. He wrote: On Wednesday, walking around the waterfront I was again impressed by its beautiful views. Wellington is very lucky to have a waterfront where one is constantly struck by the views of harbour, houses and hills on one side, and an attractive city on the other. Why the council prefers mediocre buildings to this natural beauty is a mystery. The latest example of what I call developers’ vandalism hits you right in the face as you approach Te Papa. The “conversion” of the Overseas Passenger Terminal will clearly be an over-sized monstrosity, obliterating much of Mt Victoria and its charming houses; it will tower over the marine like Darth Vader and destroy a lot of the character of that part of the waterfront. Might more councillors find some soul and save the waterfront from this landlord mentality before it’s too late?"

    • The Little Dog Laughed: A hack's view.
      • Let's get one thing straight; I'm not a theatre reviewer. I'm a cycling journalist who knows a cyclist who works in theatre. The old adage "it's not what you know, it's who you know" holds true in this scenario. While I know more about handlebars and chains than ad-libs and breaking a leg (and although that can happen in cycling, you wouldn't wish it upon someone embarking on a ride), I'm alwa

Conrad Martens painted this view of Kororareka, the site of modern Russell, in 1841. It’s based on sketches which he made during on a brief visit there in 1835. • February Fun
      • Last months meeting at Sladden Park was a great success thanks to John ZL2HD getting the gate keys so we could get to our favourite spot, and Bruce ZL2ABC providing the BBQ and a wind-break (his van) to stop the fresh northerly breeze. We had a great time. We ate. We drank (very lightly). We talked. Some flew kites. One flew a model helicopter. We looked at mobile installations and fibre-optic cab

    • Cut and Cover
      • In a surprise move, the possibility of lowering State Highway One past the National War Memorial was announced on the front page of the weekend paper. At the Architectural Centre, we have been advocating this for a number of years now - we hosted a Symposium on the design of the ‘Memorial Park’ in 2007, and the over-whelming feedback from the group of assembled experts was that the roadway through the park should be lowered.

    • 60 years of Wellington Trolley Buses
      • Strictly speaking, Wellington's first trolley bus was a single 20 kW one from 1924 which ran along the Hutt Road for a while. However, the main fleet of trolley buses began in 1949 with the arrival of 10 Crossley/Metropolitan Vickers 78 kW examples (another 4 of this model also went to New Plymouth). The first route they were used on was was Oriental Bay where they shared the road with trams for 15 months.

Now, however, a good number of them have been published and are available on line. One of the more interesting things unveiled, is the plan of the work for the Memorial Park.
