    • One week of the eight-week consultation period is already over – leaving less than seven weeks to tell the Transport Agency what we think of their flyovers and their other roading plans. The best suggestion so far has come from Maximus on Eye of the Fish, who recommends that everyone sends a submission saying: I vote for neither of the two options presented. I demand to see a full and fair evaluation of all the other schemes that you have had for the last 2-3 years.

    • Welcome back to term 3. It was lovely to see all the smiling faces as students arrived at school yesterday. I hope everyone managed to enjoy their holidays and have begun the term feeling refreshed and ready for a HUGE term of learning. We are excited about this term. Our student achievement data from terms 1 and 2 is looking pretty good. However, as a staff, we met yesterday to discuss how we can continue to improve the achievement of our students over the next two terms.

    • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > The City Nature Challenge Guided Walk - The 3 Southern Reserves.Sunday April 30th, 10.30am - 12.30pmBring sturdy shoes, water and a picnic lunch.The City Nature Challenge is a great chance to help people connect with their backyards, natural environments, parks and reserves. As part of this city-wide event we are hosting a 2-hour walk through 3 of our southern restoration reserves. If you would like to make wildlife observations as part of the City Nature Challenge, please bring your smart phone to take photos. You can sign up on the iNaturalist website and use the iNaturalist app to record any wildlife observations, this is of course optional otherwise you can just enjoy the walk and meet some great people! <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > The City Nature Challenge Guided WalkThe 3 Southern Reserves - The Walk Rundown Sunday April 30th, 10.30am The meeting point for the walk is at 10.30am at 46a Derwent street in Island Bay at the entrance of Paekawakawa Reserve. Please be on time so we can set off as a group.The walk will begin at the entrance of Paekawakawa reserve on Derwent Street and head up the valley passing by streams, and through restored native bush in the Paekawakawa reserve.  You will be treated to unique vantages of Tapu te Ranga Island and Raukawa Moana (the Cook Strait).We will then enter the oldest restoration project in Pōneke, Manawa Karioi on Tapu te Ranga Marae land and hike along part of the loop track called Te Ahi Kā with amazing views over Island Bay Valley and back to the city.We will depart Manawa Karioi on the ridge line and enter into Tawatawa reserve, we will past the reservoir on the City to Sea track stopping for a break at the Lizard Garden with views over Hawkins Hill and the Dog Park.We will then head back down the hill and there is a picnic spot at the starting point for those who would like to have a picnic lunch.We are looking forward to meeting you all and sharing our enthusiasm for our Southern reserves. We will have a few spots where we stop to tell you about the 3 reserves.     Mike Grace's Cook Strait Crossing Attempt

    • Wellington Senior Men's rower Mike Grace, along with Star rower Ben Dunsheath, set out on 15 March on their first attempt to cross Cook Strait in an ocean-going rowing boat. The forecast was for a great day - 2-5 knot northerly winds and a light sea swell. However, after about half way through the trip (taking an hour and 45 mins) the wind was up to 20 knots, and Mike and Ben were forced to pull out. The attempt has not lowered the spirits of the pair, and they plan on having another crack at the crossing as soon as Wellington's weather co-operates.

    • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

    • Members of Wellington Search and Rescue spent several hours last night searching for a man who failed to return from a walk in the Rimutaka Forest Park on Friday afternoon. A Team consisting of 2 LandSAR volunteers and 3 Police SAR members including a Police dog handler located the male just after 5am this morning next to the Orongorongo River, several kilometers from his home. He was cold and hungry, but otherwise in good health. He had not allowed sufficient time to return home in daylight, so eventually had to stay put.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/04/2011 - 09:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  10 Coastguard Mana spent the day on the water with a crew of volunteers to assist the organisers of the Mana Ocean Race Challenge - a 29km paddle for outrigger canoes, kayaks and surf skis that took them from Mana to Paraparaumu Beach. Conditions on the day started off calm with light southerlies, but the wind built to around 20 knots later in the course creating some more challenging seas conditions for the competitors. Drifting onto nearby rocks on Mana Island, Coastguard Mana were called to assist. They had managed to quickly deploy their anchor to stop them from hitting shore and CRV Trust Porirua Rescue approached and took the yacht under tow.
