    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 13:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  8 Vessel Pelous Lass was well down in the water at the pole moorings on the way to Onepoto.  The Harbour Master said the owner required assistance to pump out vessel.  5000 litres of water was pumped and vessel was left floating evenly in the water.     • NZ Bus today announced changes that will further improve their already highly successful Airport Flyer service in Wellington. From 14 January 2013, there will be a significant increase in frequency with the Airport Flyer bus departing Wellington Airport every 10 minutes during peak times to Wellington train station and back instead of the current 15 minutes. In addition to the new 10 minute peak frequency to and from the Airport and Wellington Station, all Airport Flyer buses will travel via Cobham Drive which will further enhance the reliability of this quality service.

On Sunday 4 May, we held our Course Planning Seminar, which was a resounding success! About 12 people came along and we were thrilled to see such strong participation from experienced orienteers and those newer to the sport. The seminar provided valuable insights into course design and use of Condes software that is used for mapping orienteering courses. A huge thank you to Dick Dinsdale for arranging this as well as our contingent of helpers, and all who attended! This seminar not only strengthened our collective knowledge but also helped build a more connected and engaged community. We’re already planning future educational events to continue this momentum. I encourage all of you to keep the conversation going and apply what you've learned at our upcoming events. Throughout May and June, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get outdoors, improve your skills, and continue to challenge yourself. We’re also looking forward to an SGM and potluck on Sunday 8 June where we will vote on Orienteering Wellington’s new Constitution. Looking forward to seeing you all at our events! North Island Secondary Schools Champs This year’s North Island Secondary Schools Champs was hosted by Counties Manukau Orienteering Club. Congratulations to Orienteering Wellington members Troy Thompson, Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan, who came second in the Year 12-13 Senior Boys relay. Morag McLellan also came fourth in Year 12-13 Senior Girls long distance champs, and fifth in the sprint. Supporting our members Orienteering Wellington has awarded a $750 travel grant to club members selected to represent New Zealand internationally at International Orienteering Federation events. Rachel Baker and Jake McLellan will be representing New Zealand at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Trentino, Italy, from June 26 to July 3, 2025, as has Morag McLellan at Brno, Czechia, from 17 – 20 July. Lizzie Ingham has been selected for the team attending the World Orienteering Champs in Kuopio, Finland, from 8 – 12 July. Jake McLellan, World-Class Orienteer and Mountain Man Orienteering Wellington member Jake McLellan won the fabled Tararua Mountain Race – Southern Crossing, a 36km mountain run from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Forks. It was an epic effort that saw Jake crossing the finish line in 7:08:08. Jake says: “The race kicked off fast, and I couldn’t stick with the early pace, so I settled into my own rhythm and made sure to save some gas for the back half. Just after Alpha Hut, I spotted the leaders a couple of minutes ahead — that gave me a real boost and helped me keep pushing across the tops. I made goodtime across the tops and caught up to Chester at Kime Hut. After Bridge Peak, I put the hammer down on the technical descent and managed to pull away. From there, it was just a fast hobble down from Field Hut to the finish. “I'm absolutely stoked to take the win at such an iconic event! It's an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside some legends of the sport.” Tips and Tricks To help you improve your orienteering skills this winter, here are a few tips from our experienced members: Stay on the trail: In challenging conditions, it’s often easier to follow a trail, path, or prominent feature rather than trying to cross open terrain. It will save you time and help you maintain orientation. Map reading in low visibility: If you're out in low-light conditions, try marking key features(like water bodies or trails) on your map before starting. This will help you stay oriented even when visibility is reduced. Check your compass often: Don’t rely on your compass just once at the start. Check it regularly to ensure you’re staying on course. Small errors in direction can add up to big detours! Practise regularly: Winter orienteering training doesn’t have to be outdoors. Use mapsin your local area to practice route planning, compass work, and even map-reading skills indoors. Familiarity with your map will pay off in the field. Development and events There’s a lot happening in the coming months. This Sunday sees us at Baring Head, followed by another event at Battle Hill on Sunday 8 June. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. Advanced entries close 11.59pm Saturday. We’re offering a practical training session at Karori Park on Sunday 15 June. You’ll get a chance to put your newfound skills to the test at Matariki, in the pine forest and sand dunes of Waikawa, north of Ōtaki. Further afield is the three-day King’s Birthday event in the Hawkes Bay. Entries close Thursday. Orienteering Bay of Plenty’s Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua is coming up on Saturday 26 July 2025 – a fun, team navigation challenge where you try to collect as many controls as you can in the time allowed. There are 3- and 6-hourevents that you can do on foot or mountain bike. It’s a great adventure for groups of friends and family. Entries close Tuesday 22 July. This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success  Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled.  We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display. Nearly ran aground on the south end of Mana Island after being caught in the tide with no wind to sail. MR1 located off the north end of Mana Island after they drifted north in the incoming tide. • • On the passing of Ben Hana

    • On 15 Jan our Courtenay Pl neighbour Ben Hana, more commonly known as Blanket Man or Brother, passed away at Wellington Hospital. In the days since an impromptu ‘shrine’ has appeared on the wall of the ANZ building where Ben was most commonly seen over the last few years. The shrine, like Ben, is destined to become controversial. Simultaneously creative and destructive, as it spreads over the faux-grecian façade of the bank questions and conflicts will arise as to whether it should be left alone, or washed clean. A fitting tribute, and one that would’ve no doubt amused the man himself.

It was noted to be sitting low in the water and when inspected the water was found to be half way up the engine in one of the hulls. Coastguard Mana was asked to assist and a crew pumped out the vessel on behalf of the owner.     • Biking around the bays is a stunning ride. But it could be ruined if traffic trebles. Cyclists will be forced off the road. Next Wednesday, Wellington City Councillors vote on a proposal to develop Shelly Bay, permitting a giant housing and shopping development. But there’s no plan to upgrade Shelly Bay Road. That could mean 3-4 vehicles every minute along a narrow road, trying to pass on blind corners. Cyclists could be expected to share a 1.5 metre path with pedestrians.
