Don’t sing in the railway station – it’s banned because of the Rugby World Cup
- 8 Sep 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- Be warned. The ultra-strict Rugby World Cup rules take effect in Wellington this weekend. One of the most surprising bans – and one of the meanest – is a restriction on where buskers can perform. The city council always requires them to get a licence. (It’s free, after you’ve filled in a form and studied the guidelines.) But for the Rugby World Cup, with or without a licence, no busking will be allowed within 500 metres of the Westpac Regional Stadium.

It’s not just about transport. It’s about our city and the quality of our environment
- 23 Aug 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- However you describe it, the 380-metre-long structure that the Transport Agency wants to build from Tory Street to the Mount Victoria Tunnel would change the Wellington cityscape forever, and not for the better. We’ve been wrong to describe it as a flyover. It’s much bigger than that. And the Transport Agency is wrong to describe it as a bridge. In reality it would be an elevated highway – which is an approach to road design from the early 20th Century that’s out of favour in most places.

Basin flyover: another week of opposition
- 5 Aug 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s hard to find anyone who likes the NZ Transport Agency’s plans for a 380-metre-long flyover alongside the Basin Reserve. Starting at the Mt Victoria Tunnel, the structure would carry two lanes of vehicles above Ellice Street and Kent and Cambridge Terraces and discharge them at the Tory Street traffic lights. The flyover would be a dismal eyesore across the cityscape.

Basin flyover: the mayor opposes it, but what about the councillors?
- 3 Aug 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- As Mayor Celia Wade-Brown continues her opposition to the Basin Reserve flyover, it’s sad that so few Wellington city councillors are showing similar concern. It’s equally lamentable that councillors aren’t protesting at the lack of democracy in the the planning process.

Basin flyover: how the Transport Agency wants to make home-owners pay
- 1 Aug 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- Not only is the Transport Agency planning to demolish around 50 homes, but they’re going to the Environment Court to force local residents to pay for sound-proofing on all other houses up to 100 meters from the new roads.

The birth of the film festival
- 29 Jul 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- The annual Wellington Film Festival, which opens today for its 40th anniversary year, was born out of the film society movement. In 1970 when I was elected president of the Wellington Film Society, I was also programmer for New Zealand’s 50 film societies. (I was a television journalist with plenty of spare time for extra activities.) For the film societies, I had to organise an annual season of films, all to be screened from 16mm prints. But many new titles were available only on 35mm prints, and in those days film societies didn’t have access to 35mm projection.

The war memorial motorway
- 26 Jul 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- Everyone supported the concept of lowering State Highway One into a cut-and-covered tunnel under Buckle Street. The alternative – to have a main road running through the National War Memorial Park – was stupid. No one liked the stupid idea except the NZ Transport Agency. And the Agency intends to overrule the wishes of Wellingtonians. Its decision: “Buckle Street will remain at street level.”

Basin flyover: it’s official – there’ll be noise and visual problems
- 25 Jul 2011
- Wellington Scoop
- The NZ Transport Agency has confirmed that its flyover alongside the Basin Reserve will result in “visual and noise effects.” The coy words are from the Agency’s Wellington highways manager. But he’s concerned only with minimising these problems for the cricket ground. There’s no concern that the same problems will affect the wider community.
