Picture perfect: CPotY Finalists announced

- Fruit, flora, friends, family, fences, flights, and football fields all feature in the photographs chosen as finalists in the inaugural Capital Photographer of the Year (CPotY) competition. More than 1200 entries vied for the Capital Photographer of the Year award. CPotY celebrates Greater Wellington, its beauty, its creativity and its people. The finalists’ winning entries will be exhibited at Te Auaha Gallery in Wellington from 2–11 July.

Keeping, not demolishing, the Civic Square buildings

- When I attended the recent Civic Trust seminar about the future of Te Ngākau Civic Square, the thing that surprised me the most was hearing the renowned architect Gordon Moller call for the retention and adaptive reuse of the Municipal Office Building (MOB) and Civic Administration Building (CAB) rather than have them demolished – as seems likely.

Ignoring two votes for a shared path

- Sometimes, out of the blue, a thought pops out of nowhere. Early in April, it occurred to me we hadn’t seen any progress on one of the Innovative Streets projects supported by the Wellington City Council – the one between Shelly Bay and Scorching Bay.

Hoea tō waka, row your own canoe

- In a peaceful cul de sac in Newtown, a stone’s throw from the town belt, sits a nondescript brick house that would attract little interest from passers by, except when music occasionally drifts out through the open windows: a scatter of drums, a glittering harp, voices that glide and soar. This is the home of musician Mara TK, his whānau, and his new record label – Meetinghouse Records. Its aim is supporting and releasing indigenous music that, while recognising the past, fixes its vision squarely on the future.

LGWM: doomed to failure?

- Like many of us, I’ve spent the better part of my career in Wellington working in and around the public sector. As the years and the experience accumulate, it gets easier to see the patterns of behaviour of agencies and organisations and politicians – their ways of operating, if you will. And one of those ways of operating means that Let’s Get Wellington Moving is likely doomed to failure.

LGWM’s anti-rail bias

- Let’s Get Wellington Moving has recently received a lot of criticism – apparently it’s spending $4million per month, enough to lay 100m of double track through town or purchase half a light rail vehicle (LRV). In my humble opinion, the criticism foisted on them is not scathing enough.
