    • 2018 Concert Series
      • We are pleased to announce the Chamber Music Hutt Valley 2018 concert series. Memberships and season tickets will be available by 1 November 2017.  Purchase your season membership and/or flexi-tickets here. Tickets to individual concerts are available on Eventfinder.    Mazzoli Trio Monday 26th March - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Mazzoli Trio was formed at the University of Auckland in 2015.  It has gained international attention since being invited to perform at the 2nd International Pacific Alliance of Music Schools Summit, held in Beijing.  Members of the group are each winners of chamber music concerts in New Zealand and have given solo and chamber music concerts through Europe, Britain, China, SE Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Presented in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.   Michael Houstoun Thursday 12th April - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Michael Houstoun had by age 18 won every major music competition in New Zealand.  In 1973 he placed 3rd in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  Other successes came at the Leeds Piano Competition (4th, 1975) and at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (6th, 1982).  Michael  then followed his heart back to New Zealand.  In recognition of his contribution to music here he was awarded CNZM in 2012.       Toru Trio Wednesday 16th May - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Toru Trio consists of three principal players from Orchestra Wellington.  The sound combination of flute, viola and harp was popularised by Debussy. It has been often enjoyed since.  Karen (flute) plays with groups Ethos, Elios and Nikau; Sophia  (viola) has furthered studies in Spain and the USA, developing an interest in early music;  Ingrid (harp) has given solo recitals in six countries but loves making music in small ensembles. Presented in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.   Klara Collectiv Thursday 26th July - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Klara Kollectiv  from Sweden, is a free-form ensemble in extension of the Dalecarlia Quintet which toured for CMNZ in 2014, including a concert for Chamber Music Hutt Valley.  Anna (Associate Principal Clarinet with Wermland Opera) and Manu (Associate Principal Second Violin with DalaSinfoniettan) are New Zealanders, joined on this occasion by pianist Taru Kurki, who is Head of Piano at the Musikkonservatoriet Falun. Presented in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.     LTJJI Quintet Monday 15th October - 7.30 pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Much-loved pianist Diedre Irons is joined by Vesa-Matti Leppänen (Concertmaster), Andrew Thomson (Principal Second Violin), Julia Joyce (Principal Viola) and  Andrew Joyce (Principal Cello)  from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.  Of their concert in May 2015, Peter Mechen wrote  “… levels of skill, intensity, beauty and enjoyment .. to .. grace a recital platform anywhere in the world.”

      • The Troubadour String Quartet Monday 24th July - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt The Troubadour String Quartet  is a vibrant young string quartet that formed in 2016 for the Adam Chamber Music Summer School.  They are - Arna Morton (violin), Rebecca Wang (violin), Elyse Dalabakis (viola) and Anna-Marie Alloway (cello). The group has been invited back to perform as featured artists in the 2017 Adam Chamber Music Festival.  Following this they will tour New Zealand on an Internship Programme of concerts for CMNZ that will showcase their passion for chamber music. Masked Melodies  - Haydn String Quartet in G major, op77/1  - Alfred Hill String Quartet no 3 in A min (The Carnival)  - Britten String Quartet in C major, op 36 Tickets available from Eventfinder.       • New Zealand Guitar Quartet  Thursday 1st December - 7.30 pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt New Zealand Guitar Quartet formed in 2010. Owen Moriarty and Christopher Hill graduated from Schools of Music in Wellington before furthering guitar performance in California and Spain (respectively); Jane Curry studied and performed in USA and now teaches at the NZ School of Music; John Couch is studying in Canberra. The group presents material in preparation for making a recording.

      • We are pleased to announce the Chamber Music Hutt Valley 2017 concert series. Season membership, flexi-tickets and tickets to individual concerts will be available shortly.   Amici Ensemble Tuesday 14th March - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Amici Ensemble  was formed by Donald Armstrong, the Associate Concertmaster of the N Z Symphony Orchestra, in 1988 to perform works for many differing combinations of instruments.  He draws together musicians, mostly principal players with the NZSO and/or teachers with Te Kōkī, the New Zealand School of Music.  The Ensemble is noted for its musicality and special ability to relate to audiences.   Ensemble Paladino Friday 28th April - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Ensemble Paladino  is a mixed group of string, wind and keyboard players that also grew from a desire to present diverse chamber music fearlessly and on the highest level.  Three core members are based in Auckland.  They are joined regularly by guest musicians from around the world.  The Ensemble draws upon the rich experiences of all the players, giving it a democratic and lively structure. Presented in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.   The Jac Wednesday 17th May - 7:30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt The Jac  is a jazz ensemble featuring some of NZ's finest musical talent, including members of The Troubles, the Rodger Fox Big Band and the N Z Symphony Orchestra.  Playing original repertoire with broad crossover appeal, the Jac explores a full range of textures, dynamics and instrumentations, combining the controlled power of a big band with the intimacy of a small chamber jazz group. Presented in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.     Ludwig Treviranus  Sunday 3rd September - 3.30 pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Ludwig Treviranus  hailed “... a major pianistic talent here in Wellington ”, Ludwig has a passion to communicate his music to audiences.  The programme for this, his final concert as Artist-in-Residence  with CMHV, is especially chosen  to appeal to all those young at heart.  Alongside Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite no.1, Ludwig performs Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with narrator Charles Wilson.

      • We are pleased to announce the Chamber Music Hutt Valley 2016 concert series.  Memberships, subscriptions and tickets to individual concerts will be available for purchase soon.   Miyata - Yoshimura - Suzuki Trio Monday 29th February - 7:30pm St Mark’s Church, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt Mayumi Miyata (shō), Nanae Yoshimura (koto) and Tosiya Suzuki (recorder)  present traditional and modern Japanese repertoire alongside new compositions by three of New Zealand’s most explorative composers - Samuel Holloway, Dylan Lardelli and Chris Gendall. Presented in association with Chamber Music New Zealand as part of New Zealand Festival.   Robert Ibell (cello) + Douglas Mews (fortepiano) Wednesday 13th July - 7:30pm St Mark’s Church, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt Hammers and Horsehair  -  Robert Ibell (cello) and Douglas Mews (fortepiano)  perform virtuosic works from the classical and early romantic periods - by candlelight on authentic instruments.  Robert has been a member of the NZSO since 1993; Douglas teaches at the NZ School of Music and is Director of Music at St Teresa’s Church   Villani Piano Quartet Monday 12th September - 7:30pm St Mark’s Church, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt Villani Piano Quartet  -  a new ensemble grown from a passion to perform piano quartets.  Flavio Villani studied with Matteo Napoli in Italy and Stephen de Pledge. In 2015 he played Rachmaninov’s Concerto nr 2 with Orchestras Filarmonica of Calabria and CalArts. The string musicians are all principals of Wairua Sinfonietta, an Auckland group that believes music performance helps develop community. It is music which observes neither end nor beginning, music with neither real climax nor real resolution, music which “rests lightly on the wings of the unchecked wind” (Glenn Gould). David Guerin trained with Judith Clark and Janetta McStay in New Zealand before study at the Musikhochschüle Cologne, focusing on contemporary music and also lieder accompaniment and chamber music.     • Piano Trust Gala Concert
      • We are thrilled to announce, in addition our main 2015 concert series, a very special benefit concert featuring Michael Houstoun, Diedre Irons and friends. This gala concert will be on Sunday 25 January 2015 at 3.00 p.m. in the Hutt Memorial Little Theatre. Accompanying Michael and Diedre will be Bridget Douglas (flute), Robert Orr (oboe), Rachel Vernon (clarinet), Robert Weeks (bassoon) and Ed Allen (horn). The programme is: Schubert - Moments Musicaux, D 780 (Diedre Irons) Mozart - Quintet for piano and winds in Eb major, K 452 (Michael Houstoun, Robert Orr, Rachel Vernon, Robert Weeks, Ed Allen) Poulenc - Sonata for flute and piano (Bridget Douglas and Diedre Irons) Bizet - Jeux d'enfants for piano, four hands, Op 22 (Michael Houstoun and Diedre Irons) Proceeds from the concert will go to the Little Theatre Piano Trust, members of which have personally guaranteed the shortfall between the cost of the piano and the money raised so far. All the artists are providing their services free of charge, and the Hutt City Council is providing the theatre at no cost. There will be complimentary refreshments from 2.30 p.m. and an opportunity to meet the artists after the concert. Tickets are available on EventFinda. A former student of Judith Clark at Victoria University, Nicola continued on to earn a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music in USA. She now teaches at the liberal arts Carleton College, contributes to interdisciplinary projects, tours solo recitals, and records.    Schubert German Dances, D 783 Chopin Mazurkas, op 17 In Memory of Judith Clark (1931 - 2014) new works by New Zealand composers - Ross Harris, Eve de Castro-Robinson, Gareth Farr, Christopher Norton  ter Veldhuis The Body of Your Dreams for boom-box + piano  Debussy Estampes - Pagodes; Soiree dans Grenade; Jardins sous la pluie  Albright A selection of Rag-time pieces    Vesa-Matti Leppänen, Julia Joyce, Andrew Joyce, Diedre Irons Monday 25th May - 7.30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt   Vesa-Matti Leppänen is the Concertmaster of the N Z Symphony Orchestra;  Julia Joyce is Principal Viola and Andrew Joyce is Principal Cello with the NZSO; Diedre Irons always gives “…a performance, exciting, beautiful, luminous and apparently effortless”!    Haydn String Trio in G major, op 53/1 Franck Sonata for violin and piano in A major Brahms Piano Quartet in C minor, op 60   Affetto - early music ensemble * Wednesday 8th July - 7:30pm St Mark’s Church, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt   Affetto was formed to explore the chamber music of the Baroque and Renaissance.  All members are early music specialists, all New Zealanders who have trained overseas, all playing authentic instruments.  They  “... perform with an expertise, a playfulness and joy that  can only come from the deepest love of, and for, what they do.”    A Play Upon Words - the birth of the Baroque and opera brought a dramatic shift in the way music and words played together. In England this new style was adopted by John Blow, Henry Purcell, Mathew Locke and Robert Johnson, amongst others. Their texts and musical settings often contain hidden meanings - making for an entertaining programme of lively, poignant music.     Mimosa Wind Ensemble * Wednesday 29th July - 7.30pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt   Mimosa Wind Ensemble is Hugh Roberts (flute), Thomas Hutchinson (oboe), Todd Gibson-Cornish (bassoon) and Somi Kim (piano) - four young New Zealand musicians, with outstanding performances as winners in CMNZ’s Chamber Music Contests and section leaders with the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, are returning from studies in London and Paris for this national tour.    Allard Variations on a theme of Paganini (bassoon) Rachmaninov from Moment Musicaux, op 16 (piano solo) Genzmer Trio for flute, bassoon and piano Dutilleux Sonata for oboe and piano Borne Bizet’s Carmen fantasy for flute and piano Poulenc Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano Salina Fisher new work for flute, oboe, bassoon and piano  Ludwig Treviranus (piano) Thursday 24th September - 7.30 pm Little Theatre, Lower Hutt   Ludwig Treviranus  -  is a pianist graduate of Auckland and Florida State Universities now teaching in Wellington.  In music performance he aims to share his experiences, using the excitement of the piano repertoire to open the creative imaginations of his audiences.  “… simply lovely playing … a major pianistic talent here in Wellington.”    Teacher and Pupil: Haydn Sonata in C major, Hob XVI/50 Beethoven Sonata in C major, op 2/3 Haydn Andante and variations in F min, Hob XVII/6 Beethoven Sonata in F minor, op 57 Appassionata

      • Lazarus Quartet Monday, 23 September 2013 - 7:30pm The Little Theatre, Lower Hutt Lazarus String Quartet was formed in 2009 by these graduates of the University of Canterbury. A scholarship in 2011 enabled them to appear at St Martin-in-the-Fields, in St James Piccadilly and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Amongst master classes, highlights have been those with András Schiff, Pinchas Zuckermann, Gautier Capuçon, Vadim Gluzman, David Takeno, and the Kopelman, Vermeer, Chilingirian, Kuss, Auryn and Doric string quartets. Following this tour of NZ they will return to study as a quartet in Berlin and Hanover.       • The Society was founded in 1979. The purpose was to foster interest in chamber music in the Hutt Valley and to arrange professional performances for the public. We have presented a season of concerts, usually five, between April and October every year. The artists are drawn from this country and overseas. From time to time we present special concerts involving dance, light and sound, and voice. You can become a subscriber to the Society, but anyone is welcome to attend individual concerts via the box office. Subscribers enjoy substantial benefits outlined in the season brochure on this Web site. If you have school-age children learning music, they can accompany you at no charge. The venue for most of our concerts is the Little Theatre in central Lower Hutt. This 300-seat theatre is an ideal size for chamber music. Some concerts are held in the nearby church of St James and TheNewDowse whose acoustics are preferred by some musicians. All venues have the benefit of nearby parking, in well-lit streets and car parks.   What Is Chamber Music? Originally, in the 16th century, it was music written for small groups of players, to be played in an intimate setting, literally one's chamber at home, in front of an audience of family and friends. Gradually it moved from a private, amateur, diversion to public, professional, performances. Nowadays the setting is more likely to be a small theatre or concert hall but the ensemble usually remains between two and eight players. In contrast, a symphony orchestra has over 100 people plus a conductor. Many composers have found it easier to express emotions through these small, personal groups than through an orchestra. Hence, in chamber music we find some of the greatest and most beautiful music ever written. For the audience there is always a sense of contact with the players. Each instrument can be seen and its individual voice heard. Sometimes, one of the musicians will introduce a piece with a few words, so increasing the sense of participation for the audience as well as their understanding of what they are about to hear. For those learning music this is especially valuable. Almost any instrument can be found in chamber music groups, but the commonest ones are piano, violin, 'cello, viola, clarinet and flute. However, one might also see a harp, saxophone, oboe or some percussion. In groups specialising in "early music" there will be lutes and viols, or even crumhorns, sackbuts and rackets! Chamber Music Hutt Valley is an Incorporated Society and is registered with the NZ Charities Commission as a non-profit organisation. People who subscribe to the full season of concerts in any year become members with voting rights at the AGM. Non-subscribers can register to be on the mailing list and receive our newsletters free of charge. The AGM is held early in the calendar year and anyone interested in furthering the objects of the Society is welcome to attend. The Society is run by a small Committee assisted by co-opted members with particular skills.
