Serepisos – the name that won’t go away
- Wellington Scoop
- The Terry Serepisos name re-appeared today as an election issue – this time for the mayor of Hutt City who seems to have said too much about the property developer’s overdue rates. But in Wellington, since Mayor Kerry Prendergast’s meetings with the Serepisos-owned Phoenix football team to discuss its request for financial support from ratepayers, the city council has tried to make the Serepisos name go away, by saying nothing at all.

A second Mt Victoria tunnel in ten years – yes, no, maybe?
- Wellington Scoop
- Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast took everyone by surprise this week by enabling a headline which stated uncategorically: Green light for second Mt Vic Tunnel. The headline is in The Wellingtonian, above a report written by Rebecca Thompson. But there’s no evidence of a green light, or even an orange one.

For sale: a home of the little blue penguins
- Wellington Scoop
- Consistency must count for something in Mayor Kerry Prendergast’s strategy, but it was conspicuous by its absence in a 24-hour period this week. On Tuesday, she honoured Forest & Bird and their project to save little blue penguins. One day later came her action to remove from city ownership and protection a piece of land that is a home for some of those same little penguins.

Welcome to Wellington Lady Liz IV
- Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (Inc)
- The new Lady Liz arrived in Wellington on Saturday to be greated by a group of local Wellington boaties. She is a catamaran and is slightly larger than the previos Lady Liz. Capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots she looks set to provide a great platform for the Wellington Harbour Police to continue their outstanding service to the Wellignton commnuity. She will be officially welcomed to the city at a function at Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club later this month.

Threat to Johnsonville property values? Planning changes become election issue
- Wellington Scoop
- The Johnsonville Progressive Association has today been describing a basic fear of property owners whose savings are in their houses. The association says that Johnsonville residents are upset by the Wellington City Council’s District Plan Change 72, which councilors will be voting on tomorrow. It fears that the changes will push their suburb down the socio-economic ladder. And if Johnsonville goes down, down with it will go the value of the houses.

Patrol
- Hutt Chick
- wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived at the police station. The others were waiting. I got into the waiting patrol car, and buckled up. I was going out on community patrol in Naenae. Community patrols work alongside police to build safer communities, providing an extra set of eyes and ears. We drove a random route but to some set areas, through schools, up alleyways behind businesses, making sure the streets were safe and providing a visual deterrent for tagging and other crime.

What to do with parking fines?
- Wellington Scoop
- After claims that Wellington parking wardens were given ipods and overseas trips to encourage revenue gathering, the Wellington City Council put an end to the speculation – there was just one ipod, and one overseas trip. Both prizes were gifted in a warden’s competition which had nothing to do with how much revenue they’d collected. Fair enough, too. Many employees are offered rewards for a whole range of reasons. But public perception is hard to shake. So, what should the council do? Here’s an idea that’s guaranteed to please everybody. Well, nearly everybody.

Stop …
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Almost every time I catch a bus the thing that strikes me (other than the almost always lateness of Wellington buses), is how inadequate bus stops are in their design for shelter. It seems that I’m not the only one thinking this way …. With the invention of Adshel and its nasty advertising props parading, inadequately, as bus shelters, is there really any hope that public transport might become the prime mode of moving people around the city?

Communication, non-communication
- Wellington Scoop
- Fifteen days ago we reported that the Wellington City Council had breached its design brief for the waterfront. Because this was a serious allegation, I referred it to the council and invited a response. Perhaps, I thought, the council might admit it had made a mistake. But since then: silence. The lack of response seems to be a sort of guilty plea from the council, which is usually quick to speak out in its own defence.

Wellington City Council – Little Miss Muffet and Pinocchio
- Keith Johnson
- Just to follow on a little from my previous story about the Te Kopahou (Red Rocks) Reserve and the alleged treasonous behaviour of the voting public in Southern Ward in wanting to preserve its integrity. At the Strategy and Planning Committee meeting that I attended a couple of weeks back, senior Councillor Andy Foster (who is a sort of Pinocchio look-alike Muppet) laid it on heavily that the community owed the Council for the $750,000 that it had spent in purchasing the obsolescent Owhiro Bay Quarry for the Reserve.

The Wellington mayoral election: how 17 per cent became a mandate
- Wellington Scoop
- If the first preferences of voters in the 2007 Wellington mayoral election could be illustrated, the photo would be a stampede away from Mayor Prendergast – 65 per cent for all other candidates to 35 per cent for the mayor. The numbers: 33,418 for the others, 17,910 for the mayor. The see-saw was firmly tilted away from her.

Lizzie has come home
- Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (Inc)
- Just over one hundred years after she was built, in almost the same spot, Lizzie has returned home. On a lovely Wellington afternoon and with a spring tide sailing academy manager Matthew Wood joined Gavin Pascoe and his team of Lizzie supporters to tow her around to Clyde Quay Boat Harbour from Evans Bay. With a few strategic hits of a hammer the slipway jumped back into action and before you knew it Lizzie was back in her birth place. Gavin and his team will now begin restoring her back to her former glory and we look forward to her flying the club burgee and sailing again on the Harbour.

Be Bird Smart this spring with Wellington SPCA
- Wellington SPCA
- At this time of year we receive hundreds of calls from the public who are concerned about a baby bird they have found out of its nest. In most cases these birds are not injured and are not in need of any extra care. In fact they often have a much better chance of surviving to adulthood if they are left in their own habitat. Wellington SPCA has put together some key points about baby and young birds to help you decide what to do if you find a bird out of the nest.

New Zealand's Next Top City
- The Wellingtonista
- Writing recaps of New Zealand's Next Top Model is something that I'd normally do over at Pretty Pretty Pretty, but since the first episode of Season Two was filmed in Wellington (nice work, Positively Tourism!), I thought I might put up some thoughts on all the places that they shot.

Squidward Tentacles washes up in Houghton Bay
- Keith Johnson
- As we all know (or at least those of us who have small children) Squidward Tentacles is an arrogant and egotistical 'octopus' who lives in an Easter Island moai and dislikes his neighbors (especially SpongeBob) for their child-like behavior. He enjoys playing the clarinet and painting self-portraits. Well, one of his close relatives washed up this rainy morning just down the road from our house at Houghton Bay. Jane helped drag it up the beach.

Fearless feline freed by the SPCA
- Wellington SPCA
- An inquisitive tabby cat is recovering well at home following an ordeal that left him trapped between the walls of his new home – a home he had been in for all of one day! Wellington SPCA Inspector Brett Lahman was called in to help rescue the fearless feline after he had clambered up inside a sealed chimney and then fell into a tiny crevasse between the walls of the house and the fireplace.

Dividing Kapiti in two: “it’s madness”
- Wellington Scoop
- This is part of the new $500million expressway which Kapiti Coast residents are concerned will slice through the heart of their district, dividing east from west. The four-lane expressway is being planned by the New Zealand Transport Authority, but the image – showing four lanes cutting through a residential area of Paraparaumu Beach – wasn’t seen till campaigners obtained it by using the Official Information Act.

Dunne: new trains need to be matched by new attitude
- Peter Dunn - MP for Ohariu
- UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne today said he was appalled by Tranz Metro’s “cavalier disregard” for Wellington’s 15,000 daily train commuters. Speaking after passengers were told by Tranz Metro that it would get them from A to B, but with no guarantees on the timeframe, Mr Dunne said the subsidiary of State-owned KiwiRail “needs to wake its ideas up”.

Mayor Kerry speaks
- Eye of the Fish
- In response to a recent posting here on Eye of the Fish, and possibly in response to my slightly provocative comment that …. “It is increasingly difficult to write about design in a city which pays only lip service to it,” I’m pleasantly surprised that Mayor Kerry Prendergast has taken the time to add a comment to the posting. In case people have missed it, and because it is, after all, from the Mayor, I think it deserves a little more prominence and so, here it is:

I'd like to lodge a compliment, please

- I spent two weeks living on the 28th floor of a hotel in Tokyo when I was ten, and ever since then, I have been obsessed with hotels. As you probably know, here at the Wellingtonista, we're also very fond of free food and drink, so when the Travelodge invited us to for Cocktails & Canapes, of course we responded enthusiastically.
