Jack Yan: youngest mayoral candidate has ambitious plans for Wellington
- Wellington Scoop
- Although well acquainted with the business world, Jack Yan is a new face in Wellington politics. At 37, Mr Yan is the youngest mayoral candidate this year. He was born in Hong Kong before moving to Newtown at the age of 3, speaks four languages and has traveled widely. With a background in the fashion and environmental industries, he definitely intends to shake things up if elected after his first mayoral campaign.

The misery of Manners Street, and Willis Street, and Taranaki Street

I did notice, however, that some of the workers were saving the bricks which had been ripped up from the pedestrian mall – perhaps they’ll be used again when councilors next change their minds about Manners Street.

BNU Pilsner v Miramar Rangers 17 July 2010
- Brooklyn Northern United AFC
- At 2.25pm Miramar Rangers comprised a sorry rain-soaked crew of six players, so how easy it would have been for Pilsner to claim the points and warm up for the rugby with a few jars in the comfort of the pub. But hey, you turn up and you want to play, rain or shine - and amazingly so did they. By 2.45pm the home team had amassed ten players, one of whom was a mate of Carl’s who had just come along with us for a look-see, so it was game on, reffed by Smithy, albeit in the wrong colour jacket.

Wellington's rates out of control

- Recently I asked for the compounding rate increase for residential property over the last five years from the city council´s CFO. My records from 1 July 2003 to 30 June to 2004 show my rates at $1275.69. They are now $2204.52. That’s close enough to 73 percent and I pay for my own rubbish. 10 Steps to Downstage with Maaka Pohatu
- Downstage Theatre
- Maaka is one of the Faces to Watch in our new season brochure, and with good reason. He was last featured at Downstage in Taki Rua's Strange Resting Places, and we're delighted to have him back for Mark Twain and Me In Maoriland.

Where did I stick my Stadium?
- Eye of the Fish
- Following swiftly on from the news that Wellington Waterfront is even thinking of demolishing the existing stadium, comes the question: If not there, then where? Its clear that the current site can’t cope with much more expansion, given that it is quite a large building already, and I can’t see anyone being particularly happy at the big shed getting even bigger or shedier.

A Tale of Four Matches This Time...
- Brooklyn Northern United AFC
- Oops - I have been a bit lazy with the write-ups! Las Vegas is now a distant memory and I’ve forgotten a lot of what happened in the games so I’m thinking this will be brief (and hopefully not too fictional)…! It’s also worth noting that we’re still waiting for some proper commentary from somebody who actually played on the Queen’s Birthday weekend game – any volunteers…?!? ;-)

Apartments Dead
- Eye of the Fish
- As the song went, “there’s a fine, fine line between pleasure and pain”. And so it is with the apartment market in Wellington, and my compulsion to write on this blog. One minute it seems like its not worth continuing with the blog as nothing much is happening on the Wellington construction scene, and the next minute – oh my god, they’re reporting about possibly tearing down the Event Centre, about apartment projects going phut, about Soso Apartments causing the death of the entire apartment scene in Wellington, the end of the Parade Cafe, the luxurious Pet Palace costing pussy an arm and a leg, and many more.

Good Manners - Just mind your step….
- Architectural Centre Inc
- Following the councils decision to ignore everyones advice except from those that agreed with them they have lost no time in commencing the change process in Manners Mall. New pedestrian calming measures have been introduced into the centre of the mall which also perform more than adequately as holding pens for paving contractors looking to gather up pavers from beneath the pedestrians feet and redistribute them to a place more deserving.
