Zumba! Zumba! Zumba!
- Wellington Scoop
- he city council phoned me this week. It wanted to know what I thought about its plan for a city-wide drinking ban 24 hours a day and seven days a week. It wasn’t actually the council who called. It was a market research company, hired by the council. But the questioning were more or less unbiased, except when the researcher told me the police prefer a city-wide ban. However he didn’t push the council view.

And you thought we were joking about the Octopus threat?
- The Wellingtonista
- Earlier this month we read about an octopus off the South Coast that mugged an innocent diver and took his valuable new camera. The news flashed around the world and everyone had a bit of a chuckle at the diver's expense. Not so fast, laughing boys (and girls). It turns out that this is but the latest episode in a long history of criminal behaviour by the city's cephalopod citizenry.

Wellington Sea Kayak Network visit the Yacht Club
- Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (Inc)
- After one cancellation due to bad weather, an evening paddle took place on Friday 9th of April 2010 in lieu of a normal club meeting. 8 people gathered at Balaena bay at 6:00pm , some paddling from Greta Point where they house kayaks at the Kupe boatshed. It was a perfect evening with a gentle northerly breeze just ruffling the water. We paddled toward Lambton harbour as it was getting dark and the city lights greeted us as we rounded point Jerningham. The fountain was playing and there were a few hopeful fishermen still out on Oriental parade as our small fleet made its way towards the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, nestled in a marina between the Freyberg pool and the Overseas Terminal.

The new Manners Street: speed is needed if you want to object

- The Wellington City Council has issued a densely-packed document of 27 pages which describes changes to traffic flows and parking which are to be made in preparation for Manners Street becoming two bus lanes. The council invites everyone to study the 27 pages and send “submissions”. But this isn’t a consultation process. The council is seeking only “objections” and the “objection period” closes at the end of next week.

- Wellington Scoop
- City councilors have failed to persuade the council-owned Wellington Waterfront company to save money by reducing the cost of new public toilets. In November, the councilors instructed the company to explore how to reduce the estimated $400,000 cost of new public toilets on the waterfront at Kumutoto.

Does the city really need to spend $100m for a heavy metal band?
- Wellington Scoop
- What do you do if you own a waterfront events centre which has been reviled as looking like a Soviet ablution block? What do you do when almost all the reviews criticise its acoustics and sightlines? The last thing you’d do would be to consider making it bigger. Yet this is exactly what the owners of the building are talking about – “expanding the capacity” as “a possibility.”

- Wellington Runners & Walkers (WRW)
- Hi Everyone Zeesh! – I had to put a polyprop on to go for a run on Wednesday. Goodbye summer. Nevertheless, with the school holidays in full swing, no doubt some members will be away with their families to the likes of Tauranga to squeeze out the last benign days of the season. And others will be running the Moonshine ½ marathon and 10k. Best of luck for those participating.
