    • It’s a Renters World, and We’re…Not Living in it?
      • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

    • Waterfront fatigue
      • No doubt many of you have had your fill of waterfront posts, but there was a slew of ill-informed letters to the editor in today's Dominion Post that I felt compelled to reply to. There are too many specific errors and misinterpretations to fit into in a 200-word rant, and I thought I'd try to tone down some of my usual vitriol, so I tried to offer a constructive discussion of why good public space design is more subtle and complex than just leaving as much empty space as possible.

    • Amesbury Ferns Post Match Report - Championship Round 3
      • As the season draws to an end it was another tough match for the Amesbury ferns on Saturday 17 August. They were up against the Johnsonville Royals again, having lost to them in the previous encounter. The girls were fired up for the game and their performance on court did not disappoint. It was a tight match in which the Amesbury Ferns trailed until Phoebe slotted a long goal right on the half time bell to even the score. The teams were evenly matched and the ferns were solid on defence as always. Parents watched nervously courtside as we trailed heading into the last quarter, managing to even the score at 4-4 with minutes to go to come away with a hard fought draw.
