    • Weekly Club Roundup - Saturday 8th August 2015
      • Wow – too big too strong too fast two wins! Our Colts defeated Wainui 49-5 at Mary Crowther to book a finals spot in the early game while in the main game on No.1 our Premier Reserves might be in trouble after an unauthorised demolition of Johnsonville and will host Wainui in the HD Morgan Cup final on No.1 on Saturday. Over at ASB the Netball girls had a two wins and a loss and with one round remaining some silverware looks a distinct possibility! Our juniors had some great results probably none better than our U8 Magpies who defeated West’s 55-35 despite playing the whole game with one less player. The U6s’ beat Wests’ 11-6, U9s’ beat Poneke 80-10 but the U10s’ went down in a tight one 35-25 to Wests’.

    • Rare fern rediscovered.
      • I’m one of the Botany Curators at Te Papa, and ferns are one of my specialties.  New Zealand has about 200 native ferns, and some of them are very rare.  We recently rediscovered one rare fern that had been ‘lost’.  I was beginning to wonder if it had become extinct, but fortunately it has not.  Still, the known total of individuals is still only 9, and this population is only a goat-lunch away from extinction! Me, on top of the Ruahine Ranges. No rare ferns sighted up here, but interesting nonetheless. The rediscovered fern is a maidenhair spleenwort.  It had been definitively identified from just three New Zealand sites, all in Hawke’s Bay, and all dating to the 1950’s.  The localities of these three sites were not precisely recorded, and no one I talked to knew of a living population.   I enlisted the help of the Manawatu Botanical Society to search one of these sites (the most precise one, which involved searching several square km rather than several tens of square km).  I wasn’t very optimistic, given the amount of time since it had been previously collected and that I had already looked at a number of similar Hawke’s Bay sites.  But, we found it - 9 plants in one very small area.  There is another maidenhair spleenwort in NZ, and it is quite common.  These two maidenhair spleenworts look similar, but they have different chromosome numbers; the common one has six sets of chromosomes while the rare one has four sets.  This kind of difference is usually treated at the subspecies or even species level in ferns.   Unfortunately, the present taxonomy, or formal scientific naming, for these ferns is not adequate.  We hope to sort this out in the next year or so.  They have both been called Asplenium trichomanes, but this fern does not occur in NZ (at least when interpreted in a narrow sense).  The rare maidenhair spleenwort in NZ has also been called Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens; whether this is correct remains to be established. Maidenhair spleenwort. This is the rare species, but the common one looks very similar. The two maidenhair spleenworts usually occur on or near limestone.  They can be distinguished from all other ferns in NZ by their undivided, black, almost smooth stems, and by having their reproductive structures in lines away from the margins of the undersides of their leaves.  This particular arrangement of the reproductive structures characteristics all of the spleenwort (Asplenium) species, of which there are about 20 in NZ (and some 600 in the world). I’d be interested in learning of additional maidenhair spleenwort sites in Hawke’s Bay.  Both species of maidenhair spleenwort have been recorded from the Hawke’s Bay, so any new finds may be the rare or the common species.  I would need to closely inspect them to be sure.  But, please, do not remove them from the wild!  Email (leonp@tepapa.govt.nz) or phone (04 381 7261) me the locality details. Te Papa’s Collections Online includes a photo of a maidenhair spleenwort specimen collected from the Hawke’s Bay in 1881 (it’s the common species, rather than the rare one).  The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network also has more information about maidenhair spleenworts.

    • PLT Newsletter - May 2025
      • 2025 is our 75th anniversary This month in our history ~ May 1968 Roots In our production of Roots Jenny Frost had to take an on-stage bath. During one performance the tub of water was accidentality overturned by an overzealous stage hand. Jenny was not the only one who wore the bath water that night. Director Bob Cater was not amused. It was noted in the Kapi Mana News that "As part of the society's policy of making theatre available to as wide an audience as possible, the admission price is only 45 cents."

      • Wellington Indoor Sports announced yesterday that Zephyr Rovers was one of the teams to watch when they described Rovers as one of eight teams that pop up in referee reports about teams. "I was flabbergasted" said Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall "we're a pretty clean team since Charlie and Chris left and whilst we've had the odd discussion with a referee, I can't recall it ever being abusive". Hall said he was even more perplexed when hearing that "that guy with the grey beard is your worst offender".

      • As a Junior Club we aim to provide a positive and nurturing cricketing environment for all our Primary School players from Nursery grade right though to Premier level. To that end we actively seek to provide an unrivalled level of service and support for players and parents to ensure that their experience of cricket and Collegians is a rewarding one. Player numbers were on a par with previous years, and with 34 teams and around 350 players across the age groups Collegians retained its status as one of the largest junior cricket clubs in Wellington.

    • Let’s not get pwned by the RoNSter
      • Save the Basin and Save Kapiti are organising a “Rail Against the Road/Expressway” rally at Parliament on Wednesday July 6th. While most of us in the Centre might not have strong opinions one way or the other on the proposed Kapiti ‘Sandhills’ scheme (?), the issue is nevertheless an important one for a number of reasons. First of all, being played out here is the age-old conflict between nationally identified objectives against local community interests (or destruction thereof). This, of course, has much resonance with our members.

    • Why are Labour's councillors doing Steven Joyce's dirty work?
      • The two Labour councillors on the Wellington City Council, Paul Eagle (Southern Ward) and Leonie Gill (Eastern Ward) enthusiastically got in behind to kowtow to the NZ Transport Agency's demands, and were firm backers of last week's extraordinary Council meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to do one thing, and one thing only - to make sure the Wellington City Council was lined up solidly behind Joyce's roading vision, whilst embarrassing a Mayor who had campaigned on better public transport. Joyce must have had a huge laugh watching these Labour patsies doing his dirty work.

    • What to do with parking fines?
      • After claims that Wellington parking wardens were given ipods and overseas trips to encourage revenue gathering, the Wellington City Council put an end to the speculation – there was just one ipod, and one overseas trip. Both prizes were gifted in a warden’s competition which had nothing to do with how much revenue they’d collected. Fair enough, too. Many employees are offered rewards for a whole range of reasons. But public perception is hard to shake. So, what should the council do? Here’s an idea that’s guaranteed to please everybody. Well, nearly everybody.
