• • First XI Cricket beats St Bede's in Cliffhanger

    • Tuesday 16 March 2010: In a cliffhanger ending, the First XI Cricket team has beaten St Bede's of Christchurch to bring home the Cup. Stream had to win outright to regain the trophy while St Bede's only had to bat out the day for a draw.  Declaring early on Day Three after a knock of 101 by Ben Rammell, captain Brandon Tai set St Bede's a target of 280 to win: and a target for his own team of getting all ten wickets! At 5.15 pm this afternoon, the last wicket fell and Stream had won. A fantastic performance by the whole team. The Tennis team played earlier in the day against a strong St Bede's team, eventually losing the series.

• • Triple Unit Tow from Foxton to Mana

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/02/2020 - 11:30 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 A yacht that started it's journey from Tauranga, destined for Marlborough Sounds, left Whanganui yesterday afternoon and then ran into mechanical difficulty 21 NM off shore from Foxton Beach. Coastguard Manawatu went out and towed him towards Kapiti Island, where Coastguard Kapiti took over the tow. Coastguard Mana then went out and took over the tow from from south of Kapiti Island and brought him into Mana Marina where he will be able to arrange repair. We came alongside to check they were ok and they couldn't get their engine going. They thought they would be able to, so we carried on with the other job. On the way back we passed them and they asked for assistance which they agreed to. We returned after dropping off the other vessel and towed them home to Mana Marina.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 26/12/2020 - 09:10 - 16:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  75 A 15m yacht broke its rudder approximately 2NM west of Mana Island whilst crossing to the South Island. MR1 was tasked by Police to tow them home. By the time we got to them the wind had got up to 25-35kts and they had drifted 7NM west of Mana Island. We towed them back in challenging conditions and put them at anchor just outside the Mana bar, as they were unable to cross it at low tide. On Sunday 4 May, we held our Course Planning Seminar, which was a resounding success! About 12 people came along and we were thrilled to see such strong participation from experienced orienteers and those newer to the sport. The seminar provided valuable insights into course design and use of Condes software that is used for mapping orienteering courses. A huge thank you to Dick Dinsdale for arranging this as well as our contingent of helpers, and all who attended! This seminar not only strengthened our collective knowledge but also helped build a more connected and engaged community. We’re already planning future educational events to continue this momentum. I encourage all of you to keep the conversation going and apply what you've learned at our upcoming events. Throughout May and June, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get outdoors, improve your skills, and continue to challenge yourself. We’re also looking forward to an SGM and potluck on Sunday 8 June where we will vote on Orienteering Wellington’s new Constitution. Looking forward to seeing you all at our events! North Island Secondary Schools Champs This year’s North Island Secondary Schools Champs was hosted by Counties Manukau Orienteering Club. Congratulations to Orienteering Wellington members Troy Thompson, Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan, who came second in the Year 12-13 Senior Boys relay. Morag McLellan also came fourth in Year 12-13 Senior Girls long distance champs, and fifth in the sprint. Supporting our members Orienteering Wellington has awarded a $750 travel grant to club members selected to represent New Zealand internationally at International Orienteering Federation events. Rachel Baker and Jake McLellan will be representing New Zealand at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Trentino, Italy, from June 26 to July 3, 2025, as has Morag McLellan at Brno, Czechia, from 17 – 20 July. Lizzie Ingham has been selected for the team attending the World Orienteering Champs in Kuopio, Finland, from 8 – 12 July. Jake McLellan, World-Class Orienteer and Mountain Man Orienteering Wellington member Jake McLellan won the fabled Tararua Mountain Race – Southern Crossing, a 36km mountain run from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Forks. It was an epic effort that saw Jake crossing the finish line in 7:08:08. Jake says: “The race kicked off fast, and I couldn’t stick with the early pace, so I settled into my own rhythm and made sure to save some gas for the back half. Just after Alpha Hut, I spotted the leaders a couple of minutes ahead — that gave me a real boost and helped me keep pushing across the tops. I made goodtime across the tops and caught up to Chester at Kime Hut. After Bridge Peak, I put the hammer down on the technical descent and managed to pull away. From there, it was just a fast hobble down from Field Hut to the finish. “I'm absolutely stoked to take the win at such an iconic event! It's an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside some legends of the sport.” Tips and Tricks To help you improve your orienteering skills this winter, here are a few tips from our experienced members: Stay on the trail: In challenging conditions, it’s often easier to follow a trail, path, or prominent feature rather than trying to cross open terrain. It will save you time and help you maintain orientation. Map reading in low visibility: If you're out in low-light conditions, try marking key features(like water bodies or trails) on your map before starting. This will help you stay oriented even when visibility is reduced. Check your compass often: Don’t rely on your compass just once at the start. Check it regularly to ensure you’re staying on course. Small errors in direction can add up to big detours! Practise regularly: Winter orienteering training doesn’t have to be outdoors. Use mapsin your local area to practice route planning, compass work, and even map-reading skills indoors. Familiarity with your map will pay off in the field. Development and events There’s a lot happening in the coming months. This Sunday sees us at Baring Head, followed by another event at Battle Hill on Sunday 8 June. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. Advanced entries close 11.59pm Saturday. We’re offering a practical training session at Karori Park on Sunday 15 June. You’ll get a chance to put your newfound skills to the test at Matariki, in the pine forest and sand dunes of Waikawa, north of Ōtaki. Further afield is the three-day King’s Birthday event in the Hawkes Bay. Entries close Thursday. Orienteering Bay of Plenty’s Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua is coming up on Saturday 26 July 2025 – a fun, team navigation challenge where you try to collect as many controls as you can in the time allowed. There are 3- and 6-hourevents that you can do on foot or mountain bike. It’s a great adventure for groups of friends and family. Entries close Tuesday 22 July. He was unable to get himself and his 2 dogs back to shore and asked if we could come and pick him up. We took MR2 out and gave him, his dogs and the dinghy a lift back to Mana Cruising Club. • • Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s

    • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

    • 3 has been neglected for way too long, but now it's all go again. Go, go go! Motivation was supplied by Ground Effect, in the form of a stylie cycling top as a spot prize. Lucky Carl was the winner of the top (see photo). But everyone was just stoked to be making such good progress. That's the thing about difficult tracks, they don't take muck digging (not like Lazy Fern, the easy highway that seemed to take an eternity to build). Yep, T3 is ripping along. Another few sessions and it should be rideable all the way to the top of Trickle Falls.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina. We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time!     • Women’s Section. The Championship Foursomes were held recently. Silver winners were Jill Bolland and Lynne Bruce. Bronze, Jan Marsden and Debbie Turner. Winter Cup Trophy was won by Jill Bolland r/u Jill Martin. Captain v Secretary Competition on November 5 will be a fund raising day towards plants for the river bank in the entranceway to the Club. We hope this will be well supported. A big thank you to Judy Launder and her hard working team who keep the gardens and surrounds of the Club a picture. The end of our competition year will be upon us shortly with closing day on 12 November. There will be a 9 hole competition commencing at 10.00 a.m. followed by lunch with prize giving at 1.30 p.m. Disc’s will need to be in by 9.30. We welcome our 9 hole women to come along and join us. From Friday 14 November, our rolling draws will continue with Wednesday’s included until December 19. We invite all our women members to come along and participate. It is a great way to meet and play with others. Starting time is 8.28 a.m. - 9 a.m. The ummer cup commences on 13 November and entries for this will be taken on closing day. Good luck to those who participate, for this highly prized trophy. A reminder, that scorecards returned, must be countersigned by a fellow playing member. There are some excellent scores for the shootout, which is to be held on 16 November in conjunction with the men. Special thanks to organizers, Jill Bolland and Shirley Parkinson. Also, to Liz Cavies who has given so much time organizing the many raffles which are contributing towards the prize money. Our A.G.M. is to be held on 3 December at 9.00 a.m. Any notices of motion will need to be in the hands of our Secretary no later than 5.00 p.m. 19 November. Good golfing everyone.     • PRINT COMPETITION 2021 Just a friendly reminder that the deadline for this year’s Print Competition is quickly approaching (March the 25th) Full Competition details: April 22 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm Categories are: OPEN | DIFFUSE Closing Date for Entries: On or before 25 March (midnight) Presentation Night: 22nd April 2021 at the TTC Club Rooms Please note that prints will need to be delivered on or before the 25th of March. If you have any comments or need special consideration please let us know at comms@wps.org.nz. You can organise prints by email if needed if this is more convenient on or before the 25th of March. The Club Meeting on the 25th of March will be the last date for submission of your prints. When submitting your prints please ensure: The prints are adequately protected i.e. with card/portfolio/bubble wrap All items submitted with the prints are named i.e. photo boxes, cardboard etc. (these will be returned to you with your print) Entry Specifications: Limited to 3 images per member per category Images must not have been used in any previous Wellington Photographic Society competition Each image is to be entered into one category only Matting of entries is optional Maximum Mat side – 16” x 20” (406mm x 508mm). Not framed. If the image is not matted it is recommended that images are printed with a white border for display purposes. Image size – any size within the Mat dimensions Please note your Name, Subject (Open, Diffuse), Title of the image and a contact number on the back of your print (In case we need to get it back to you afterwards) NOTE: Wellington Photographic Supplies will again be supporting our Annual Print Competition by providing HALF PRICE printing of up to six images only per person of any size up to 12×18. • • Boat broken down near Ohau Point

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 04/02/2012 - 18:00 - 23:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  15 Coastguard Mana was tasked by Police to recover a broken down vessel with three people on board from Ohau Point, south of Makara Beach. When CRV Trust Porirua Rescue arrived on scene it was discovered that two of the people had already been returned by another vessel to Makara Beach. The remaining person was towed back to Mana. The vessel was a 17ft runabout that had experienced mechanical failure.     • This is from a new eye in the field who shall remain anonymous for now. A great read I’m sure you’ll agree!! This was submitted a few days after the match but has taken a while to get published. Apologies for that. In the first of two OBU vs HOBM games this weekend the Prem 2’s travelled out to Hutt Rec in search of a win & bonus point to secure a top 4 finish in the pursuit of Ed Chaney. Severely depleted in the front row particularly meant season debuts for Jason Gore from the Righteous Pack & John from the Teddy Bears. Also pulling on the boots in nearly 3 years was Physio Mark Thorne-Alexander.
