    • Record Store Day 2022 at Slow Boat!!
      • Well, with all the disruption and distraction of the last few years now (hopefully!) largely behind us, Slow Boat is thrilled to share our plans for Record Store Day 2022  - this year taking place on just the one Saturday, the 23rd of April (a week after Easter!) As usual, we will be looking to serve up a tasty array of the limited edition RSD vinyl releases – we have done what we can to order in what we think might be of interest, and it is now in the lap of the gods/ vinyl manufacturing plants/ freight firms/ couriers – godspeed, people! We are also utterly thrilled to announce we will be joined by a couple of our favourite artists for instore performances – namely; Vera Ellen Having released the wonderful “It’s Your Birthday” on the iconic Flying Nun imprint last year, Vera has garnered some excellent reviews with what is a clever and charming collection of songs, and a real grower. Vera will perform instore at 2pm Luke Buda Dear friend of the ‘Boat, and Phoenix Foundation mainstay and co-frontman Buda last year released his long overdue third solo album, the eponymously titled “BUDA”;  a wonderfully reflective collection of songs that ponder our place in the world, getting older, getting along – which wound up on a lot of people’s ‘best of the year’ lists. Given that he was denied the opportunity to tour it (TWICE!) by that blimmin’ Covid, we are thrilled that Luke and violin maestro Anita Clark (aka Motte) have agreed to perform for us here instore at around 3pm. We will have plenty of copies of both artists’ albums, and they will be happy to sign for you at the conclusion of their performances. We will also have the odd spot prize and giveaway, as well as some lollies and other goodies, and will be opening at the earlier time of 9am, just to make the wait for those eager beavers outside just a little shorter. No reserves, no holds on the limited releases, please mask up, and please be patient and considerate of others – we want everyone to have a great day - can’t wait to see you all! Viva independence, viva vinyl – hoorah!!The Slow Boat Crew XX

    • The Dead C are coming to town
      • I wouldn't wanna put money on it or anything, but I'm pretty sure that the last time legendary NZ noise-rockers The Dead C (wikipedia) played in Wellington was when they supported Sonic Youth on their Dirty tour in 1993. And to be frank, with an utterly transcendant performance in the face of much tribulation, mopped the floor with them. Now they're playing at the City Gallery on Saturday night. It's free. What the hell else do you need to know?

    • Phoenix: Warm-up Match Moved Again
      • The first Wellington Phoenix home pre-season game has been moved for the second time. Originally announced for the Basin Reserve, at some point it was switched to Newtown Park and now, according to the official site it has been moved to Westpac Stadium due to “concerns that Newtown Park would not have the capacity to cope with the big crowd expected.” Sunday at 2.00pm is kick-off time and the tickets are only $10 (and free for under 16s).

    • Lads with Minerals
      • A controversial decision by Wellington Soccer to close the home of football, resulted in a late ground and time change to 12.30 at McAllister Park. The guys turned up, still obviously miffed by this disappointment. It is every young Karori players dream to run out onto on the No.1 turf in the 2.30 time slot when the whole community can be heard cheering on the black and whites from the welcoming pavilion balcony setting.

      • I have to admit - there’s something special about about getting up at an ungodly hour to do something or see something out of the ordinary. Driving this morning through a beautifully still Wellington morning with no traffic is something out of the ordinary in itself So it was exciting to see all the big trucks, flashing lights and men in reflective vests - I knew I’d come to the righ

    • BNU Thirds v Petone 4/4/09
      • Petone 0 – 2 BNU Thirds First game of the season saw us playing at the “home of football”, no not Wembley, it turns out that the home of football is actually Memorial Park, Petone.  Although new opposition for us, Petone having been relegated down from Capital 3, their goalkeeper seemed strangely familiar. It struck me towards the end of the game (I obviously had too much time on my hands with us

      • BNU 16 2 v Karori Kittenz 7 Karori were certainly no pussies, demonstrating deadly skills on the counter attack on a hard McAllister Park pitch. With five changes to the lineup, BNU were again guilty of a sluggish start and found themselves chasing the game from as early as the tenth minute. Despite controlling the game in midfield for the majority of the first half, the home side went in at the b

    • Wgtn Car Ban Talk
      • Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast today called for private cars to be banned from the Golden Mile within 10 to 20 years, following planned developments such as opening Manners Mall to buses, overhauling roads near the Basin Reserve and building a second Mt Victoria Tunnel And the Greens say they support the proposal to make the Golden Mile car free with only public transport, but said Wellington should give priority to light rail and pedestrian space in the Golden Mile now, not in 10 to 20 years.

    • Laying a campaign trail
      • I am afraid that I have become caught up in my electioneering – such that I have now committed myself to walking every street in the Southern Ward, dropping a calling card in every letter box, and talking in an open and friendly way to those fellow citizens who are out and about. Since I am largely a house husband at present and the boys are at school, my week-day mornings are pretty much free. So the map is a report back on progress so far.

    • Boot Camp For Nash
      • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall admitted this afternoon he was putting George Nash (pictured) through football boot camp to sharpen his fitness. "George is looking a bit sluggish so I've got him doing extra training with North Wellington and today I've got him playing an outdoor match as well" said Hall "he'll find it a bit strange with no walls and a pitch that is five times as big but I'm sure he'll sweat it out".

    • Traffic concerns denied
      • The Wellington City Council and the Wellington Road Policing Unit reckon no-one has complained about pedestrian safety at the intersections of Buckle, Taranaki and Arthur Sts, according to a Citylife article last week, “School sees red over drivers running lights”. Clearly Mt Cook School disagrees, as do a number of residents who have called both the Police and the Council about safety at the two major Buckle Street intersections near the school. More on this shortly…

    • Cinephilia: Film Festival preview
      • The Film Festival has been a fixture of Wellington's winter calendar for nearly 40 years and for those of us who organise our lives around glowing rectangles of one kind or another there is no better way to spend a cold and wet afternoon than in the comfy leather chairs at the Embassy, engrossed in a work of art. Programming a Festival like Wellington may seem easy but I can assure you it's getting tougher every year.
