    REVIEW: Blunt Dog: Bullet Train to Dunedin

    • In addition to playing an Eyegum Wednesday at San Fran, Blunt Dog spent the weekend recording their upcoming album at the Massey University studio. The album, titled Bullet Train To Dunedin, promises a warm and unpolished sound reminiscent of old home recordings. This album marks a significant departure from their first album, How is a Dog So Honest?. The new tracks, primarily derived from guitarist and vocalist Dom’s demos, are both harder and softer, expanding on the range of their earlier work. The album concept originated from drummer Logan’s whimsical idea of a Japanese bullet train travelling from Britomart station in Auckland to Dunedin, described by the band as “a moment of genius and a passage of jest.”

Light rail is sexy transit…cruise smoothly, comfortably, and quickly to the local tiki bar; no more lurching starts and stops, no more endless waits behind four other buses boarding at the stop on Willis Street, no more fighting with cars for road space. And so there seems to be a grumbling undercurrent regarding the position of the Ngauranga-to-Airport strategic study report.

    • The Wellington City Council and the Wellington Road Policing Unit reckon no-one has complained about pedestrian safety at the intersections of Buckle, Taranaki and Arthur Sts, according to a Citylife article last week, “School sees red over drivers running lights”. Clearly Mt Cook School disagrees, as do a number of residents who have called both the Police and the Council about safety at the two major Buckle Street intersections near the school.     • Good lord – what a marvellous event – hard to think of a more ‘Wellington’ thing than The Mutton Birds playing the song of the same name here at Slow Boat instore here on a Friday evening for a packed store full of deliriously happy fans, smack dab in the middle of their two sold-out shows at San Fran!!We were treated to a half-hour set of stone-cold classic songs like “Anchor Me”, “White Valiant” and my personal fave, “Like This Train” by this brilliant band – a pointed reminder of the way their music has lodged in our collective pyches – for which we are immensely grateful to the band, their management and crew, and genial soundman Bob – a wonderful, unforgettable moment in the store’s storied history, and one captured for posterity with some fine video clips (including this one https://www.facebook.com/159129047505886/videos/1317027751832660/, where I tragically dropped my phone part way thru…!!!)So – just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone who made it down, and especially the band – Don, Dave, Alan and Ross – for giving your time and talent so generously – absolutely magical, spine-tingly stuff!!!Love on ya, XX The Slow Boat Crew XX

The Club Meeting on the 25th of March will be the last date for submission of your prints.     Meeting The Ferret Bookshop — Verb Wellington

    • A lively interview with Terry and Aames from Wellington’s oldest second-hand bookstore, The Ferret. In this edition of the ‘Maggie Meets’ profile series for Verb Wellington, I catch up with Terry and Aames who run The Ferret Bookshop. Terry admitted early in the interview that he has a penchant for inefficiency, which allowed me to quickly pigeonhole him into the “second-hand bookshop owner” stereotype. The more I dive into his story the more I realise that the story of The Ferret is not a linear one. The Ferret Bookshop is one of the only Wellington bookshops surviving from the time it was established over 40 years. Since 1979 The Ferret Bookshop has had many homes nested in and around Cuba Street. According to its owner Terry, a couple of people in the book trade founded it, one of them a fellow named Rick who used to sit at the shop desk with a lit cigarette in hand and an ashtray in arm's reach. In 1988 Terry bought the business, which is now situated next to Loretta on Cuba Street.

• • Cycling advocates award Fellowship to improve community accountability

    • Cycle Wellington has awarded the Alastair Smith Memorial Fellowship for 2021-22 to Jonathan Coppard. The Fellowship is dedicated to furthering the work of veteran Wellington cycling advocate, Alastair Smith, who passed away in November 2019. It has a value of $5000. Jonathan Coppard's project will improve the inclusivity and diversity of cycling advocacy. “Unfortunately for many decades now, Wellington's street environment has been so hostile to cyclists that only a few people feel able to ride bikes,” he says. “This has led to a situation where cycling activism is unrepresentative of the wider Wellington community. We need to do better.” “We are now starting to see a change in both the physical and cultural approach to streets. Bike lanes are changing the street environment so that more people feel able to ride a bike. It is essential that Cycle Wellington changes at the same time so that we are representative of the people we advocate for, and can contribute to the work required to address inequalities in Wellington.”

    • Porirua City Council is putting in a range of new efforts to help make community members’ odour reports for Spicer Landfill easier and provide greater data for the city council. From 8am Tuesday 27 September, Spicer Landfill odour issues should be reported directly to Porirua City Council’s contact centre on 04 237 5089, including after hours. David Down, Porirua City Council Manager Water and Waste, said community reports of odour would be shared with Greater Wellington the same day. “Porirua City Council will be taking the calls and collecting information. We are also looking to engage independent personnel to make odour observations in the community when complaints are received after hours, to help get good data on when and where these occur.

    Ngahere Working Bees Restoring Te Taiao

    • Onslow students, whanau and teachers tore into weeds to release young forest plants in two recent working bees. The teams did their mahi in the forest restoration area next to the Waipahīhī Stream at Onslow College on the 17th and 25th February. Dozens of young rakau, wharariki flax and tussock were liberated from the smothering effects of invasive weeds. Tūī, riroriro, pīwakawaka and tauhou regularly make use of the regenerating forest, affirming the biodiversity goals of the project. The growing ngahere is also used by students and teachers as part of Onslow’s curriculum across a range of learning areas. Year 9 Science students use the forest while learning to measure and assess ecological communities and in developing their value of kaitiakitanga for te taiao.

Samaritans volunteers are everyday people who range in age from 20 to 80. Wellington Samaritans has been operating since 1965. They have over 80 volunteers and take over 20,000 calls per year. We are seeking people who are good listeners, caring and empathetic, to help operate our 24 hours helpline. We provide full training and on-going support.     • Yesterday Transport Minister Steven Joyce announced a massive roading project, running from Levin in the north to the Airport in the south, that will cost taxpayers more than $2.5 billion, disrupt communities, demolish homes, and destroy the Basin Reserve as a test cricket venue. Within the Wellington CBD It includes the construction of a flyover at the Basin, two tunnels at The Terrace and Mt Victoria, a four-lane expressway across the city, the four-laning of Ruahine Street, and much more.

    WCC Revists Earlier Assessment Not to Provide RECYCLING WHEELIE BINS to Hobson St

    • Recycling wheelie bins were introduced across the city in 2011; but not to the properties in Hobson St, situated on the Thorndon Flat. Residents from Hobson St recently re-approached the Council regarding the earlier assessment of their street as being not suited to Council supplied recycling wheelie bins. The early assessment had indicated that Hobson St had a high volume traffic flow (similar to Tinakori Rd), and that due to the road width there was potential to block access to emergency services.

• • 7 Point 5 Degrees And Back

    • It's 7.5° and back, a collaborative project by Gonzalez and Wellington artist Alannah Gunter. In Linz, Austria passers-by watch a monitor inside a canal-tube (above) and are in turn watched by a webcam. Placed at 7.5° to the earth, the camera-tube is a virtual tunnel through the earth to Wellington where the live image screens nightly at the Film Archive Loading Bay. A similar camera-tube is installed in Abel Smith street; what it sees is what the Linz passers-by will see.

• • Interesting discussion over at Eye Of The Fish

    • Wellington architecture blog Eye Of The Fish has an interesting discussion on the Memorial Parkway, the strip of land in front of the War Memorial in Buckle Street that was intended by the last government as an extension of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. Given the proximity of this area to the Basin Reserve, there's been some conjecture that the two projects would end up being linked by the transport planners. It's worth taking a look at both the original article and the comments that follow.

    • When I first decided to make the move to Te Whanganui-ā-tara, my Wellington-native Dad was delighted. All his fond and foolish memories flooded into his mind’s eye as he recounted, “you know, I probably have a memory on every street corner of that place”. After three short years in this city, I already felt I could agree to his statement. Wellington can feel small, especially when it’s assignment season and campus feels like a never-ending liminal space. Do not give in to this! Seek the crevasses and hidden gems.

What are the ways we can feel present, calm and connected when we are alone in public space at any time of day? Playescape will be a valuable experiment in re-balancing personal/emotional wellbeing in the urban environment of Te Aro. The act of sitting alone on a bench in the street is something that everyone should feel safe to do. However, in reality that isn’t always the case. Can we change this?

    It’s not just about transport. It’s about our city and the quality of our environment

    • However you describe it, the 380-metre-long structure that the Transport Agency wants to build from Tory Street to the Mount Victoria Tunnel would change the Wellington cityscape forever, and not for the better. We’ve been wrong to describe it as a flyover. It’s much bigger than that. And the Transport Agency is wrong to describe it as a bridge. In reality it would be an elevated highway – which is an approach to road design from the early 20th Century that’s out of favour in most places.

    • When the New Zealand cricket team (note not BLACKCAPS™) first toured South Africa in 1953 they had never won a Test Match and were given no show against a ruthless South Africa, on pitches tailored to support their fast, mean quick bowlers. The cricket was tough, and victory was ultimately beyond New Zealand's grasp, but it wasn't the cricket that ensured that the series became a NZ sporting legend. The 1953 Second (Christmas Day) Test is famous for the profoundly moving story of one player, Kiwi fast bowler Bob Blair, and his story has been brought to the stage by talented actor Jonny Brugh (Sugar & Spice) and it's playing now at BATS. During the rest day of the Test, Blair got the news that his fiancée Nerissa Love had been killed along with 150 others in the Tangiwai Rail Disaster. When play resumed on Boxing Day nobody expected Blair to play any further part in the game. Without giving too much away, the rest (as they say) is history. Brugh's play is a moving and beautifully acted treatment of the story. He plays dozens of parts (Blair & Love; cricketers Rabone, Reid, Sutcliffe, etc; Prime Minister Sid Holland) and imbues them all with fine detail and a sweet comic sensibility. He brings, not just the game to life, but the era - a different age.read more
