Building on top of a sewer tank
- Eye of the Fish
- This post was going to be called “New School of Music” but then I thought – no, hold on, this could really cause a stink. What if…? Is it? Was it? No, surely not. But maybe….? Who knows? I’ve just been alerted to the revised scheme for what was at one stage known as the new “School of Music” down by the Michael Fowler Centre – or more accurately, on the site of the MFC carpark and smack bang in the viewpoint of the Amora Hotel. Amazingly, it is a full public notification, and must be costing someone millions to do this – and it closes in just a very few days. Monday?

Pablos Art Auction 2024 is a GO!
- Pablos Art Studios
- Pablos Art Studio is all on again this year for their annual art auction, a mainstay on Wellington's creative events calendar. This year sees Pablos partnering up with the Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa National Library again to hold the auction in their amazing foyer on Wednesday November 06. This fundraising event provides the studio with much needed money to keep them operating and serving marginalised communities within the Wellington area throughout the year. With well over a 100 works up for auction from artists all over the Mōtu it promises to be a fun filled evening full of excitement with something to suit everyone.

Buy them a Welcome Pack. Today is World Homeless Day. At DCM we call the people we work with taumai, meaning to settle. One way you could mark the day would be to purchase a 'welcome pack' for our taumai when they move from homelessness into their new home. Sustaining tenancies once taumai have been housed is a vital part of the work we do, so we’ve put together a ‘welcome pack’ consisting of items to help them care for their whare, and to make their new house into a home. $100 will fund one pack. If you are able to support taumai in this way, please click the link below. If donating directly to our bank account use 'Welcome' as a code. Any donations would be appreciated. https://www.dcm.org.nz/support-dcm/ Because together, we CAN end homelessness in Wellington. There’s a new kid on the block…
- Cycling in Wellington
- Opening officially today is “Bicycle Junction”; the latest addition to Wellington’s cycling scene. Brooke from Mamachari and Dan from Crank Cargo have joined forces to open a new urban cycling store in Newtown. They sell a range of bikes – refurbished imports through to Christiania trikes – plus all the accessories one could dream off… including my favourite, cup holders! And once permits have been approved they’ll also be serving coffee… can’t wait!

A more cost-effective plan than a super-city – why we should abolish the Regional Council
- Wellington Scoop
- The Dominion Post was this week doing its best to talk up Wellington local body amalgamation again, with a thinly-disguised opinion piece from Colin James masquerading as news. The theory is that the “threat” of the Auckland super-city needs a counterweight in Wellington, and that the only solution is some kind of regional amalgamation. However the usual lack of enthusiasm from the locals is noted – with apparently no-one other than Fran Wilde and Colin James in favour of the idea.

Redefining the flyover – “a slimline elevated street”
- Wellington Scoop
- What do you do if you’re under attack? You call in a public relations company. And that’s what the Transport Agency seems to have done, as opponents of its Basin flyover start gearing up their campaign. Evidence of PR expenditure is on display in the compliant, supportive DomPost this morning. On the op-ed page, Jenny Chetwynd attempts to redefine the concrete flyover. She has accepted PR advice that it should be referred to as a “slimline sweeping elevated street.”
