    • A Tale of Four Matches This Time...
      • Oops - I have been a bit lazy with the write-ups! Las Vegas is now a distant memory and I’ve forgotten a lot of what happened in the games so I’m thinking this will be brief (and hopefully not too fictional)…! It’s also worth noting that we’re still waiting for some proper commentary from somebody who actually played on the Queen’s Birthday weekend game – any volunteers…?!? ;-)

    • The rates go up, then up and down
      • The Wellington City Council yesterday announced an add-on to next year’s budget – an extra $120,000 “to improve community emergency preparedness.” In the same announcement, we’re told that the average rates increase is going up to 4.4 per cent from the previously announced 4.3 per cent. Curiously, the council also tells us that rates increases for homeowners and commercial property owners will be coming down.

    • A City for People
      • Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.

      • After more than 30 years of working closely alongside whānau and hapori (communities) in Porirua, the Hutt Valley and Wellington, we at Wesley have learnt first-hand that with the right support, sustainable responses to complex issues can be driven by hapori themselves. We’ve been working out, as a community organization, what our part is in sparking the local community economic systems that truly value what makes people’s lives better. Te Hiko is our koha to this kaupapa.

    • Mount Street Cemetery
      • The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
