• • Metlink On Demand trial extended to the end of 2024

    • Good news for Tawa and Porirua public transport users: the Metlink On Demand trial has been extended to the end of the year. Metlink On Demand is an app-based service introduced to Tawa in May 2022, and extended to the Porirua CBD in June 2023. Passengers can order rides from small buses operating without set routes between around 600 flexible pick up and drop off locations or ‘virtual stops’. Greater Wellington Transport Committee chair Thomas Nash says the regional council’s public transport wing knows the service is well-used and loved by locals. “Metlink On Demand was born out of our commitment to connecting more passengers with public transport,” Cr Nash says. “We knew the Tawa hills and central Porirua were underserviced areas and that Metlink On Demand could help fill this gap.

• • Common Ground?

    • This event is part of the Aotearoa Festival of Architecture, by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects. When Kaikoura shook, photographer Andy Spain got Wellington's list of earthquake prone buildings and started photographing them. The idea of fixing time became appealing, as many of the buildings were demolished. When asked to exhibit them together however, Andy began to ask what these remnants meant. He visited the petals saved from Athfield's church of First Church of Christ Scientist and saw their fragility. He talked to architects about remedial work which never saw the light of day. What were the consequences of all these traces existing in a time when the fates of many Wellington buildings are so contested? Where heritage competes with social housing, which competes with sustainable reuse, and so on. So, this exhibition is not about the photographs that have been taken, or the drawings drawn, or the artworks saved. It is about how we decide to use these remnants, and what stories we want them to tell.

    • In the light of the restriction on public use of many facilities due to COVID-19 and the Ministry of Health guidelines at Levels 3 and 4 designed to slow the spread of the virus, the following decisions have been made: Hataitai Childcare Collective and Community House (HCCCH) has made the decision to close the Community House from 6pm on Wednesday 25 March 2020 till further notice, and to suspend all our Play Groups until further notice, effective from Sunday 22 March 2020. The Hataitai Community Recreation Trust (HCRT) closed the Hataitai Centre (the former Hataitai Bowling Club building) effective from 2pm on Monday 23 March 2020 until further notice.     • With the new $180m convention opening soon, it was startling to see that a city councillor says the city needs to have another new venue. Councillor Tamatha Paul (quoted at the end of a DomPost report about the loss of car parks) said she supported opening a medium-sized venue. “That’s going to fill the city, the hotels, the restaurants and the hearts of our city.” Which is of course the claim that was made to justify spending $180m on the convention centre.

    • As anyone who frequents Cuba St should know, Plum has been undergoing renovations for a while. The old Plum had been well-liked (as these reviews attest), but was starting to feel a little tired: perhaps somewhere between the late Krazy Lounge and Mr Bun. I expected little more than a lick of paint and some new furniture, so it's a bit of a surprise to see it in its sleek new incarnation by Alistar Cox of Matterhorn, Mojo and Mighty Mighty fame.

    • I’ve been really impressed by the pace of construction of the sparkly-new bypass-of-the-bypass since I’ve got back. Apparently this started in late October, and as I walked by today the road was just about ready for sealing. The new NZTA website doesn’t seem to offer any drawings or maps of this, so for those who haven’t had the chance to see it, I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago to give you an impression of the route.
