Ranger, Sue Lum notes that “The calibre of applicants was extremely high and it was a privilege to meet such passionate and articulate young people during the interview process.” Gwen and her sister Ursula have established WHS’ first eco group through the Jane Goodall Institute Roots and Shoots program. They have invited speakers to WHS and organized a group of students to attend the Predator Control Workshop at EBIS on Thursday 1st March. Their latest initiative is to reduce and replace the use of wasteful plastic bags through direct action at school and in the community (using Boomerang Bags see below). We are fortunate to have such eco leaders and conservation minded students in our school and whanau.

And we have some sensational entertainment for you! Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are masterful entertainers, moving seamlessly between ballsy blues and soulful ballads. Seamus Johnson delivers blistering vocals and guitar chops: you will think you’re listening to a whole band. Dr. Blue is a must-see for all-out entertaining roots. The line-up Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are dynamic, masterful and all about entertainment. Laura, with high energy and vocal strength, moves between ballsy blues and soulful ballads. She gives her band license to shine and shine they do; Wayne Mason, master of boogie ‘burning it up’ on the keys, John O’Connor ‘eating it up’ on lead guitar, George Barris on warm upright bass and Pete Cogswell on back porch drums ‘putting the car in drive’. Seamus Johnson has been described as a one man musical sensation. With blistering vocals and guitar chops you will think you’re listening to a whole band. Fresh back from touring with Sea Mouse, Seamus is here to bring some authentic old school blues! Beans is a recent addition to the Wellington folk scene, importing a wild array of original songs all the way from deepest, darkest Yorkshire. They gained international acclaim in 2021 as a finalist in the Liverpool International Song Contest and have since performed across Australia and Aotearoa. Embodying the classic singer-songwriter formula, Beans’ live shows are rich with humour, honesty and interesting word choices. Expect to feel things. Mike ‘Dr. Blue’ Mckeon is an international award winning multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and poet. ‘With a unique brand of early blues’ (Blues in Britain Magazine), ‘Mesmerizing’ (Broadway Baby), ‘A sensation’ (Otago Daily Times). STOP PRESS – Dr. Blue will be joined by Vicky Weeds, a singer, cellist, and burlesque darling from Pōneke. She has been performing around Aotearoa since 2011 and in 2019 won the Wellington Alternative Performing Arts Award for favourite cabaret performance. Two Times is a toe-tapping covers band regularly entertaining audiences around the Wellington region. Expect to groove to all your favourite hits. For many years, DCM held an annual Bookfair, and ever since we have been hoping to find a new fundraiser that connects in a meaningful way with the work we do with the most marginalised people in our city. The Walk a Mile Challenge and BIG THANKS YOUS Concert provide an opportunity for us to come together as a community to support DCM, and raise the pūtea we need to keep our essential services running.       • In 2024, The Wellington Footlights Society are celebrating 10 years of bringing musical theatre to the Wellington stage, and what better way to celebrate than reflecting on a decade of music, performance and community in our biggest musical revue yet - Thank You, Ten: A Musical Celebration. Thank You, Ten will take audiences on a journey across the catalogue of Footlights shows, performing one musical number from each production the troupe has staged in the last ten years, some in the form in which we know and love, and others with twists you might not expect. Following several challenging years for our communities, Thank You, Ten also aims to celebrate all the joy and support which theatre brings to the lives of so many, and as such Wellington Footlights are excited to be partnering with the Mental Health Foundation for this production, donating $3 from every ticket sold to the charity.

    • Wellington VHF Group Participation in JOTA
      • Members of the Wellington VHF Group assisted the Paparangi Scout Group at their Jamboree On the Air (JOTA) event held at Paparangi Scout Hall in Wellington on Sunday 21 October. Operating as ZL2WA, Wellington VHF Group members Brian Fearnley ZL2BRF, Mark Foster ZL1VMF, John Andrews ZL2HD and Jim Parnell ZL2APE shows the boys and girls from Paparangi Scouts, Northland Keas and Ngaio Venturer Unit around their hobby and made contact with Scouters from all across New Zealand and the World. Scouts and Amateur Radio: A great combination!

      • The May meeting followed up the formal business with a Show and Tell. We had six speakers and two new guests introduced themselves- they have migrated to Wellington with their SAR search dogs, cats and radio gear from Finland.     • Result: Capital Punishment
      • The second running of our Capital Punishment mountain event! This year the field size more than doubled to a decent-sized field of 77 finishers. The course is a real mixture of terrain, starting with a few hundred metres of road, moving onto rough farm trails, a fast 4WD downhill track, then the big gnarly but steady uphill grind, and finishing with a rough gravelly downhill track. This year the conditions were excellent: very dry underfoot, a newly graded Old Coach Road, and a tail wind up the hill. This, along with a slightly shorter course at the start, saw Dougal Thorburn finish the circuit in 34:01, nearly two minutes quicker than James Coubrough's time from last year. Second was Graham Pearce and third Stephen Day. In the women, Jo Doherty finished in a time of 45:22, ahead of last year's third placegetter Anne Rose and Katie Jenkins. Dougal and Jo also won the King and Queen of Kaukau awards, with Dougal taking 13:14 to ascend Kaukau, and Jo 17:42.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 30/12/2020 - 14:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  6 Whilst having lunch we heard a radio call with MOC from a dinghy that had nearly capsized crossing from Titahi Bay to Mana Island due to wind increasing unexpectedly. They had lost their kayak, which they were carrying on the dinghy, and had decided to beach it at the ranger station on Mana Island to wait for the conditions to improve before returning. A couple of vessels found the kayak and radioed MOC with the details. One of the vessels recovered it and returned it to Mana Marina.       • In February 1985, a small group of parents and caregivers decided to set up a community crèche, which opened in June 1985 with one paid worker supported by parent helpers. Over time, the crèche evolved into a fully professional education centre with qualified teaching staff. The community of parents and caregivers still owns and governs the Centre, and the community is still involved in its day-to-day running.

    • Friends of Maara Roa
      • Maara Roa is a forest restoration project at Cannons Creek Valley near Porirua. Its purpose is to restore the Bush back to what it was before the people who ruined it came. The project started in 2000, after some gorse fires destroyed yet more sections of native bush. A small group of people met to see if something could be done to stop it. The Friends of Maara Roa grew from that.
