Is the ugliest building in Wellington?
- Iona Pannett
- Great news that NZ owned TSB Bank has signed for another 10 year sponsorship deal for the Arena on the waterfront but I do think this is the worst building in the city - monolithic, no architectural merit, still do not know how it got oonsent. Needs a wrecking ball through it and a redesign.

Heading South-East
- Eye of the Fish
- Given that everyone seems to agree that any new PT route needs to go down to Newtown to visit the Hospital (thereby removing any need for doctors, nurses and staff to have to drive to work) and then possibly the Zoo (as another main attraction) and then cross over to Kilbirnie for the large and growing population there, the Eye of the Fish decided to take a look at what may happen there.

Mark the date in your diary – Saturday 17 August – and please join and share our Facebook event. Better still, why not volunteer to join our team and ensure the Bookfair is a huge success? "The DCM Bookfair is one of the best events I have ever volunteered for. It is a fun time to team up with lovely people for a great cause." - Russell "Helping at the DCM Bookfair is a very rewarding experience and a great way to help end homelessness in Wellington. The Bookfair is a fun-filled day with a chance to check out all the weird and wonderful books. You won't regret volunteering!" - Alaina Do you love to manaaki people? Are you good with money, have good customer service skills, or is physical labour more your thing? We need helpers across a range of different roles. Please get in touch to volunteer by emailing events@dcm.org.nz We applaud the Wellbeing Budget Yes, yesterday was Budget Day and we all got to see what has been included and prioritised in the government’s Wellbeing Budget. We applaud the focus on broader success measures including the health of people and communities. It’s particularly pleasing to note the focus on mental health and addictions, a constant struggle for the people we work with who are experiencing homelessness. “For too long we’ve treated issues of mental health and addiction only when they became a crisis. That’s no longer acceptable – in fact it never was.” David Clark (Budget pg. 31) Last year at DCM we put a lot of effort into ensuring our taumai had a voice in the Government Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction. (For a great story capturing this, read all about A Day in the Life of Te Hāpai.) One of their key messages was that medication and going in and out of the ward was not working, and they wanted better options. We are excited to see that their voice is being listened to, with serious funding being put into this area. More disappointing is the focus on, and dollars for, transitional rather than permanent housing. We will continue to challenge behaviours and policies that can enable and perpetuate homelessness rather than ending it. Read all about the Budget here. <!-- --> <!-- --> Join our brilliant bunch of backers Many Wellingtonians support DCM with regular, automatic payments. It is their commitment to our work that enables us to continue supporting people who are experiencing homelessness in our city. This is Frank. He started supporting DCM as an AP donor many years ago. Later, when he had more time on his hands, he also volunteered to help us with our Bookfair deliveries and Foodbank pick-ups. Frank is now an integral part of "team DCM". Many of our AP donors support us year after year. Are you able to become part of this brilliant bunch of backers? Because together, we CAN end homelessness in our city. Coffee in chains
- WellUrban
- The good news is that, after a slow summer, there are a lot of new cafes, restaurants and bars about to open. I can think of a dozen that are definitely on the way, with another half dozen or so intriguing rumours. The bad news is that most of the cafes that have opened recently, or are about to open soon, are chain stores.

CVL study waste of money
- Hutt Chick
- Why is the Mayor suggesting we waste $50,000 of ratepayers money on consultants to “investigate” the Cross Valley Link (CVL)? According to the Hutt News, Hutt City Mayor David Ogden wants the government to fund the CVL, and the city council has put aside $50,000 for consultants.

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.

Te Hiko - Centre for Community Innovation
- After more than 30 years of working closely alongside whānau and hapori (communities) in Porirua, the Hutt Valley and Wellington, we at Wesley have learnt first-hand that with the right support, sustainable responses to complex issues can be driven by hapori themselves. We’ve been working out, as a community organization, what our part is in sparking the local community economic systems that truly value what makes people’s lives better. Te Hiko is our koha to this kaupapa.
