    • Social Work Perspective
      • As a Social Worker, I see people in difficult situations, every day. There are gaps in our systems and a multitude of complex factors can negatively impact people. SVdP states simply that the Society ‘Helps People’ and as a Social Worker and part of the team at the Welfare Hub, that is what we do. I advocate, navigate systems, catch tears, challenge, listen, and listen some more to build the relationship and trust to support and shape assistance around each person’s needs and aims. Social Work is often behind the scenes, working with those who feel unseen or who society chooses not to see. This is where the joy and the challenge is.

    • Hoea tō waka, row your own canoe
      • In a peaceful cul de sac in Newtown, a stone’s throw from the town belt, sits a nondescript brick house that would attract little interest from passers by, except when music occasionally drifts out through the open windows: a scatter of drums, a glittering harp, voices that glide and soar. This is the home of musician Mara TK, his whānau, and his new record label – Meetinghouse Records. Its aim is supporting and releasing indigenous music that, while recognising the past, fixes its vision squarely on the future.

    • Small notice, big building
      • Did any of you see a small sign in a spot that’s only visible if you’re catching the courtesy bus to Zealandia? It’s a notice about a resource consent application for a new building that will tower over the Michael Fowler Centre, the Town Hall, and neighbouring buildings. Nearly 40 metres high, when the allowable height is is 27 metres, promoted as the home of Victoria University’s National Music Centre but predominantly an office building with what seems to be a significant loss of green open space.

    • Abrupt Closure of Award Winning Wellington Brothel
      • A central, appointment based brothel that has been open since 2006 has announced that they will be closing their doors on the 29th February 2024. A statement made by the owner (who is a sex worker), announced the closure to clients with mixed emotions, stating “Although this decision is not made lightly, I believe it is the best way forward for both myself and the business”. There was no reason provided in the initial statement as to why the decision was made - at least not to clients.

    • Car-nival
      • 's going to be huge, of course. This weekend's Cuba St Carnival is set to be the biggest yet, with some unmissable acts on the Main Stage and even the Courtenay Place bars getting in on the act. The open-ended consent means that its future is secure, and you can get there by bus for only $1 (assuming that there are any drivers available). Some of us are getting very excited indeed about the weekend, and with luck even the weather might come to the party.

    • Laying a campaign trail
      • I am afraid that I have become caught up in my electioneering – such that I have now committed myself to walking every street in the Southern Ward, dropping a calling card in every letter box, and talking in an open and friendly way to those fellow citizens who are out and about. Since I am largely a house husband at present and the boys are at school, my week-day mornings are pretty much free. So the map is a report back on progress so far.
