    • Ash Wednesday at Stream
      • Wednesday 9 March 2011: To mark the start of Lent, three crosses traversed the Chapel to lay before the altar. The crosses provided a backdrop as students came forward for the Imposition of Ashes. At the end of the senior liturgy, three crosses were carried from the Chapel and nailed to the front fence as a reminder for all those who pass by.

    • All Saints Mass
      • Tuesday 1 November 2011: All Saints Mass falls on the First of November every year and celebrates the lives of all saints, lives given to helping others. Father John challenged all present to think about social injustice. He used the beattitudes as a framework for asking questions about how we might deal with injustice when we see it occurring in our lives or in the lives of others.

    • Deep water
      • The WCC Draft Annual Plan 2011/12 was out for public consultation recently. In these tight financial times the plan was generally about maintaining affordable rates through prioritising spending and reducing costs by $6 million, through reducing some services, improving the efficiency of other services and deferring non-urgent work. Although it’s not all cost cutting, there is an allowance to spend $650,000 on a feasibility study for a new deep-water pool in Kilbirnie.

    • Commuter Newsletter
      • As you can well imagine it has been an eventful week with the incident involving the City Cat a week ago on Wednesday 2nd March 2011. For those on board the 8.05am sailing from Days Bay to Seatoun, it was a very frightening experience to say the least when the bow windows broke as the ferry encountered an unusually large and unanticipated wave just offshore from Scorching Bay on the Miramar Peninsula.

Designed by architect John Scott for the Society of Mary in 1959, the Futuna Retreat Chapel in Karori was opened on 19 March 1961. Futuna Chapel may be New Zealand’s most important building of the 20th century, the first to express in architectural terms New Zealand’s contemporary national identity. The building was awarded a Gold Medal by the New Zealand Institute of Architects and, later, was the recipient of the Institute’s inaugural 25 Year Award.

    • DCM Bulletin - Thanks, Wellington
      • Wellington really is a generous community. The Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) foodbank has gone from having bare cupboards to stocked shelves thanks to a wide range of donations. In April, we asked for donations for our foodbank. We were down to the last few cans of food, and were even out of basics like toilet paper. The past three years have shown a consistent increase in food parcels provided by DCM. In 2009, we provided 2366 parcels. This increased to 2978 in 2010, and if the current numbers continue for 2011, we estimate providing 3460 parcels.

    • Yesterday’s Solution
      • In 2011, you would think two considerations would be central to transport planning; the need to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on oil. Think again… The New Zealand Transport Agency has released for consultation its scheme for the inner city section (Cobham Drive to Buckle St) of its grand Levin to Wellington Airport superhighway. What the scheme amounts to is a road building extravaganza that reeks of the 1960s and 1970s. The salient point about NZTA’s consultation is that it offers no choice. The key projects including a flyover at the Basin Reserve and a second Mt Victoria Tunnel are a fait accompli. So the public is not given any meaningful options, such as the public transport alternative.

    • Roxy Cinema
      • Reborn as The Roxy in 2011, this iconic Miramar building started life as The Capitol Theatre - a one-screen picture house, purpose built in 1928 to screen silent films. In 1932 the cinema was converted to screen 'talkies', and continued to show films until 1964, when it closed its doors. It then became local shopping centre 'Capitol Court' until falling into disrepair and lying vacant for a number of years.
