Wellingtom Wander Search Initial Meeting Thursday 5 July 2012
- Wellington VHF Group
- Wellington Wander Search is a group that is being set up to support Police searching for people living with Alzheimers. The group is similar to others operating around NZ and will use the WandaTrak system that has been adopted by organisations such as LandSAR. Members of the VHF Group have initiated this in Wellington, based on our interest in the technology, Radio Direction Finding (RDF or "fox hunting") and our association through AREC with search and rescue organisations. One area we are keen to explore is improvements to the system or effective alternatives.

They’re talking about a new motorway: “exciting” … “wonderful” … “delighted”

- There were many exclamations of delight to greet Friday’s announcement of approval to build a 27 km four-lane motorway through Transmission Gully. Fran Wilde said the decision was “great news.” Gerry Brownlee said it was “an exciting and important milestone.” Wellington employers said it was “wonderful.” CentrePort was “delighted.” The deputy mayor of Porirua was “absolutely delighted.” But her statement touched on one of the negatives of the $930m project:

A Very Fine Affair
- Fair Trade City Wellington
- Today I had the pleasure of triumphantly depositing $1700 in the Oxfam Coffee Break bank account! This money was raised at the formal dinner, A Fine Affair, by the amazing group of timebankers, volunteers, sponsors and guests, who worked, donated and consumed delicious fairtrade food and drink. The day started bright and early for our star chef, Tania Sawicki Mead, along with a dedicated team of kitchen hands including Nolan Hodgeson, Karly Christ, Kate Wilson and Renee Rushton. A crisp selection of fresh food donated by Commonsense Organics and The Organic Connection was unpacked and the preparation began. The Newtown Community Centre Theatre was transformed into a beautiful, fine-dining restaurant setting lit with fairy lights and candles and decorated with fair-trade coffee sacks.

Newtown Union Health announces impact of funding cuts
- On Thursday 31st May the Policy Board of the primary health care service, Newtown Union Health Service (NUHS), met to discuss the proposed management plan to accommodate a DHB funding reduction to frontline services of $274, 000. The Board has made the decision to put on hold any decision until the community has been made aware of the front line services that are having to be reduced as a result of the DHB funding cut. However, prior to implementation of this proposal, the board is calling an open public meeting to consult with service members and other interested community representatives.

Newtown group to protest against funding cut to local health care service
- In a classic case of David versus Goliath, concerned members of the Newtown community will protest the quarter million funding cut to the Newtown Union Health Service on Friday. NUHS has been told by the Capital and Coast District Health Board that it will lose $274,000 in funding from July 1. The frontline primary health care service caters to South Wellington’s most vulnerable communities, looking after people who have difficulty accessing appropriate and affordable health care due to socio-economic deprivation and language barriers.

Bike The Trail - A community service event
- Wellington VHF Group
- Bike the Trail, a popular recreational event, provides either a 25km cycle ride from Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt, or a 12km ride from Stokes Valley, down the Hutt River Trail to Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone. The ride is held annually and is designed as a non-competitive family cycling event promoting cycling as a fun, healthy, safe means of transport and recreation. Wellington VHF Group were contracted to ensure public safety during this event. The event was originally scheduled to run on Sunday 4th March, however this was cancelled due to the effects of bad weather. During the previous 24 hours period Wellington experienced what the forecasters termed a “weather bomb”. In the early hours of Saturday wind gusts of 134 km/hr were recorded in Belmont Regional Park, close to the site of our Belmont station, see graph below:
