Memorial Park Today we were playing Petone on their great new artificial turf. Whilst you can't beat a nice grass surface, lets be honest, they are few and far between in Wellington! Petone had come off a good result last week, unlucky to draw with Island Bay, so we knew we would have to be at our very best to get the 3 points we wanted. The game began evenly with neither side able to get on top early, both sides tactics were obvious from the start. We tried to play through the midfield, and release our wide players to create chances, while Petone were crowding the midfield, pressuring us to give the ball away and catch us on the break. We did a reasonable job of keeping possession, but were struggling to break them down, with a strong northerly blowing into our faces we were pinned in our own half. A turnover from us allowed the Petone right winger to get up the line, Fizz had tracked him down but his deflected pass into the box somehow found the strikers feet who hit a shot beyond Jack to make it 1-0. From here we started to get our game going, Silao and Ed were getting in behind and causing problems, we just couldn't get that clear cut chance we needed. The game continued like this right up until just before half time. We conceded a corner which we cleared to Packer who played Eddie in down the right, Ed blitzed his marker and whipped in a pin point cross to Joe at the back post who buried his header. Counter attacking at its best. 1-1 at half time, and we were confident knowing we had the wind at our backs for the remainder of the game. We came out second half fired up and straight from kick off we attacked, Packer ran at the midfield and played a ball to Joe who made his way into the box to win a penalty after an over aggressive challenge from the centre back. Steve put the penalty away to put us 2-1 up. We continued to press Petone and put their back four under all sorts of pressure, they could not get out of their own half with the wind playing havoc! Despite the pressure, they continued to defend well, and some good goalkeeping kept the score at 2-1. Ed was making defenders look silly on the right, but we could not seem to get the crucial 3rd goal we needed. Petone were continuing to counter attack, and came into the game as the half wore on. From one of these attacks they won a corner. A great ball was played in and a Jacko punch fell to their player who hit it first time, Brandon cleared the ball off the line only to be pulled up for a handball. A straight red card and a penalty, very harsh for what seemed a fair block. The penalty was scored and the game finished at 2-2. Credit to Petone who played a great game, though we couldn't help feeling like this draw was a loss. MOM Eddie Burnett 72 544x376 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Flama Book"; mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;} Round SIX: Stop Out vs Wellington United. Hutt Park Today was old timers day at Stop Out. Old timers day is a special day for the club, where club legends and ex players spend the day at the club supporting our teams. One of theseclub legends, Chatham cup winner Jim Blair, came in and gave us a pre match talk. A short history of the club and some motivational words.Wellington United are a side we had a costly loss to last year in one of our worst performances, with that in mind and with Jims speech, the lads were well and truly up forthis game! The game started with us on the front foot. Our wide men, Eddie and particularly Silao were getting in behind causing problems with their pace. Wellington United had watchedus the week before, and their tactics were to play an offside trap which we struggled toadjust to. It didnt take long for our pressure to pay off, with Silao getting the ball out wideand cutting inside two players to send a deflected shot off his right foot to put us 1-0 up.Within the space of five minutes it was 2-0. Cherbel and Joe exchanged passes onhalfway putting Cherbel in behind the back four. Cherbel took the ball towards the keeper and showed great composure to square the ball back to Joe who finished to put us 2 up. From here Wellington United started to come into the game, getting in behind us and looking dangerous from a couple of sloppy passes from us. We held out to go into halftime 2-0 up. We came out second half knowing that if we scored next we would kill the game off. Wewere playing some great football, creating chance after chance without being able to put the ball away. A combination of some great scrambling defence, and some bad luck meaning a frustrating period for us. We finally made it 3-0 when JT played a ball over the top for Steve who went past the keeper and slotted home. From here we put the foot down. Yatesy was on and causing havoc up top, and after he ran onto a through ball and cut inside two defenders he put a great finish into the top corner. At 4-0 the next goal was the goal of the game. The ball fell to the Wellington united striker just inside our half, who sent a volley into the top corner of our net! Great finish. We made it 5-1 when Yatesy poached another from a goalmouth scramble, which was eventually given as an own goal. A 5-1 win and a good performance from the lads. MOM Cherbel Khouchaba Round FIVE: Marist vs Stop Out. Kilbirnie Park We went to Marist knowing that points are very hard to come by at Kilbirnie park. Last year we escaped with a 1-1 draw, and this was our best result in years on a park that everyone struggles with. With this in mind we had a great week training in preparation for the game. We went out fired up and from the first whistle we really put the heat on Marist. Despite the difficult conditions we were really getting our passing game going, and once again Silao and Eddie were causing problems in wide areas. After so much sustained pressure, something had to give and it eventually did. Funnily enough it came from a mis-hit through ball that somehow snuck through the Marist back four. The ball fell at Joes feet who took a few touches towards goal to set himself up, and put us in the lead with a classy finish into the bottom corner. At 1-0 up we knew we had taken the crucial first step towards 3 points. The rest of the first half was a niggly affair, with Marist seemingly taking the physical approach to put us off our game, we dealt with this well and went into halftime in the lead. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, we were dominating, Marist were frustrated. They had a good period just after halftime where they managed to get behind us but our back four and Jacko dealt with this well. Once we managed to get back on top we really took the game to Marist and before long it was 2-0. After some great play through the midfield Packer released Eddie down the right who cut the ball back to Packer, who then squared it to Steve to finish. A great team goal. Virtually from kick off Eddie got himself on the ball out wide again, before he cut inside four players and bury a low finish to make it 3-0, a great individual goal. From here we saw the game out, we could have had a couple more but the game ended in a very satisfying 3-0 win. MOM Joe Gaughan Round FOUR: Stop Out vs Karori. Hutt Park We welcomed Karori to Hutt park for what was always going to be a big game, and after such a disappointing result last week, the lads were even more motivated. Karori always bring a big physical side that are really tough to break down, and with their unbeaten start to the season we knew today would be no different. The game started at a frantic pace, with both sides tactics made clear from the start. We were doing our best to get the ball down and play, while Karori, with the strong wind at their backs were playing very direct and trying to get behind our back four. As the game began to settle we conceded a free kick about 30 yards out from goal. David Batty stepped up and smashed the ball cleanly into the top corner of our net, a combination of a great strike, and the strong wind resulted in a wonder goal. 1-0 down undeservedly, but this is football. Not long after this, Steve Toms went into a challenge whole heartedly as he does, and unfortunately buckled his knee and had to be helped off the field. This combination of events had me thinking, "is it going to be one of those days?" After a reshuffle with Rob dropping into centre back, we really started to dominate the game, Silao and Eddie out wide were causing all sorts of problems. After some great work from Joe, Silao used his electric pace to get in behind the back for only to poke the ball just wide of the goal. Chances were coming. The pressure started turning into corners, and from a short corner the ball went to Rob on the edge of the box who played Joe in to turn his man and somehow turn a tackle into a goal, great strikers instinct! 1-1 and we were right on top. Two minutes later, we played another short corner to Rob on the edge of the box, who played a superb ball to the back post where Packer headed the ball back across for Cherbel to finish. Two goals in two minutes just before half time to go in 2-1 up. Second half we came out with the wind at our backs knowing that Karori would not be able to use the same direct style, impossible into the wind! The game was reasonably even for the first 15 minutes of the second half before we started to get on top and create some chances. Silao got into a great position out wide and fired in a fantastic cross that sailed over the keepers head and into the back of the net. At 3-1 up, we had to weather a sustained spell of pressure. Karori eventually managed to pinch a goal after a great cross into the box. We put the game to bed after a great run down the left from 'Fullback Fizz', followed by a pin point cross to the back post where Jake was on hand to head home. A 4-2 win, and after a couple of early setbacks, the boys showed great character to comeback and take the points. MOM Rob Sansom. Round THREE: Wainui vs Stop Out. Richard Prouse Today we played Wainui away. Playing at Richard Prouse is always a tough fixture, and one where we stumbled last year. A combination of Wainui growing an extra arm and a leg, a difficult surface and some rowdy support, makes this a very tough game to win. We started off playing well and getting into some dangerous areas, without creating too many clear cut opportunities. Wainui had started the game defending well getting players behind the ball, and were working their way into the game. We dominated possession but were constantly frustrated by Wainui's strong defending. After some good play from Wainui they got the ball down our end down the left, where their midfielder whipped in a fantastic cross for the right winger to rise and bury a great header giving Jack no chance. Fair play for a great goal. We continued to push until halftime but were still struggling to carve out any clear cut chances. Second half we came out determined to overturn the score. With the wind at our backs Wainui repelled wave after wave attack, getting everyone behind the ball, then hoofing it forward when they won it. We were starting to get in behind them but just couldn't put one away. Joe headed just over the bar then had a good effort saved. Then somehow, after a free kick gone wrong, Wainui got the ball in our half behind the back four for their striker to lob our keeper! It just wasn't our day, which was confirmed when Steves shot came back out off the bar, straight to their defender! A disappointing 2-0 loss, and a tough learning curve for the lads. There are plenty of tough places to play in this league, adapting is the key. Dave Farrington Of all the away games throughout the season, Miramar is the one we look forward to the most. Dave Farrington park is a fantastic surface and really promotes passing football, which is something we are trying to achieve. We knew also, that to have 6 points after 2 games was the ideal start we were after. We came out firing constantly dispossessing Miramar in their own half and creating plenty of shooting chances. Miramar recognised this dropping another player into the midfield to close down some space. It didn't take long for us to strike with Joe getting into a dangerous area out wide to cross into the box where Yatesy took a great touch and snuck a left footer into the near post. A classic Yatesy finish. From here Miramar had a good period putting us under some pressure, but we continued to play well and create shooting opportunities without putting a second away before halftime. Second half we came out and started to really put the pedal down, and it wasn't long before it was 2-0. After a great passage of passing Steve received the ball in the box to lay off for Joe who buried a fantastic finish in the bottom corner. Jake had come on at halftime and was causing all sorts of problems for Miramar. From a pass back to Jack who connected cleanly, Jakes persistence saw him chase the ball in behind the back four to slide a great finish in to make it 3-0. Before long it was 4. Cherbel was having a great game and was really linking up well down the right hand side. He received the ball outside the box and struck a clean shot off the post for the ball to rebound to Joe to bury another great finish. 4-0 was the way it stayed and with some more clinical finishing it could have been many more. A great performance from the boys sees us with 6 points from 2 games. MOM Steve Toms Round ONE: Stop Out vs Island Bay. Hutt Park We welcomed Island bay to Hutt Park today for the 1st game of the season. Island Bay are a strong side that would be challenging for the title by the end of the season, so to get them 1st game was exciting, and it was crucial that we started the year by winning 3 points! A lot of hard work had been put in pre season so the lads were fired up and ready for kick off. We got off to a decent start without controlling the game, and were the better side for the first 20 minutes. After winning a free kick down the right hand side, we took it quickly to find Micky at the back post who planted a powerful header in the back of the net. From here the game evened out with Island bay starting to put some real pressure on. A free kick came into our box falling at the feet of their player who somehow put it over the bar. Moments later Island bays ex Stop Out midfielder went down in the box for a strong penalty shout, which was waved away by the referee. 1-0 up at halftime. We came out second half know that we would need another goal to kill the game off. The game became a really scrappy affair with neither side able to dominate, the wind had picked up and was really starting to affect the game. With the wind at their backs Island Bay were spending a lot of time in our half winning corner after corner. We defended these really well and created a couple of great chances to kill the game off. The score stayed 1-0, a great start to the season thanks to some great defending, and a bit of luck. MOM Rob Sansom 2012 SEASONRound 17: Saturday 11th August 2012. Stop Out vs North Wellington. (Hutt Park) 5-0 WIN. Mason, Gulley (2). Aden (2) MOM: Steve Toms We entered today’s match needing to turn around a poor 1st round performance against Wellington United where we lost a frustrating game 1-2. The game began with Wellington United making their intentions clear by sitting off us and letting us keep possession in our own half. We gladly accepted the main share of possession and spent the 1st half creating plenty of chances. It wasn't long before we made good use of that possession and came up with the opening goal. Silao picked up the ball in the left back position and expertly found Jamie Mason's well timed run in behind the defence. Mason calmly slotted the ball past the advancing goal keeper. 1-0 up. The second goal came halfway through the 1st half as we worked the ball up to Steve Gulley who cut the ball back on to his left foot and fired a thunder bolt into the top corner from the edge of the area.2-0 up. We entered half time 3-0 up after Steve Gulley converted a penalty. The second half was about a good performance from us and working hard to keep a clean sheet. Vinnie did well in goal to hold onto a couple of decent balls into dangerous areas, this went a long way to keeping our clean sheet. We added two more goals in the second half both through Fisum Aden, “Fizz” managed to coolly compose himself in front of goal after a good cut back from Alistair Yates, and slotted the ball home. He then finished off a good team performance from us by swinging a corner straight into the goal. 5-0 and many good performances from the lads. Steve Toms was fantastic in midfield and was rewarded with the Man of the Match. Round 13: Saturday 14th July 2012. Stop Out vs Island Bay. (Wakefield Park) 0 -3 LOSS MOM: Lionel Taylor With the team really suffering from injuries and suspensions, we went to Wakefield park with 12 players knowing that we were in for a tough day. Island bay were sitting second on the table and have a very good young side. The 1st half was a pretty even affair with a howling northerly and driving rain going across the ground making it very difficult to get the ball down and play. Though both teams did try and play to their credit. We were doing a reasonable job and managed to create a few half chances without really coming up with any clear cut opportunities. With about 30 minutes gone Island bay started to play some good stuff and after a good passage of play their midfielder buried a left footed shot from just outside the box. We went into halftime 1-0 down, in a fairly uneventful half. We knew that we were still in the game and with a couple of pieces of quality we could get ourselves a result. We continued to try and play 2nd half but struggled to break down a committed Island bay defence who hustled as a team the whole game. As a result of this hustle we gave the ball away in a dangerous position, for their winger to cross the ball to the far post to make it 2-0. This was a big blow for us and though it was a well taken goal, only had ourselves to blame. From here the game became scrappy and Island bay managed to sneak another goal to make it 3-0 and close the game out. Disappointing to lose but a tough day at the office considering our situation. Chatham Cup: Saturday 7th July 2012. Stop Out vs Miramar. (Wakefield Park) 0-4 LOSS Last 16 of the Chatham cup vs Miramar was a big deal for us, though 12.30 kick off at the Island bay turf just didn’t seem right. It was a shame that such a big game, for different reasons, couldn’t be played at either team’s home ground! Never the less we had no trouble getting up for this. The game was fairly even for the first 20 minutes and we managed to play some good stuff. We created a chance when a cross came in the ball bounced out to Martin Packer who couldn’t connect well with his shot, a tough chance! From here Miramar started to assert some dominance on the game, without really creating any clear-cut chances. We conceded a succession of corners, which we were struggling to defend due to a combination of poor marking and good delivery. The last of these was whipped in with pace, and the smallest man on the park managed to get up and bury a header, disappointing to concede in this way. Before long it was 2-0 after some good play down the left from Miramar resulted in a cross to the far post which their striker brought down on his chest and laced into the top corner. 2-0 at halftime. At halftime it was tough getting the lads up, 2-0 down to a very good Miramar side was always going to be a huge deficit to pull back. We had belief in ourselves though after taking out two central league sides in the cup thus far. Second half we really struggled to get our passing game going, Miramar were not only playing well with the ball, but without the ball also. We were conceding a lot of corners and this was eventually the difference. One of these was delivered to the back post for a header back across to their free striker to nod home, a good move but poor marking again. It became 4-0 from yet another corner, with their height advantage really showing for this one. We still managed to put some good passing phases together and eventually won ourselves a penalty, which we deserved for our efforts. Unfortunately the penalty wasn’t converted so the score stayed at 4-0 and that was how it finished. A 4-0 loss which was disappointing, and probably didn’t reflect the difference between the two sides. Round 12: Saturday 30th June 2012. Stop Out vs Upper Hutt. (Harcourt Park) 2-2 DRAW. Scorer: Jamie Mason, Alistair Yates. MOM: Jamie Mason For the second week in a row we played at Harcourt park, and after our 4-2 win last week, we came confident of getting another result. The game started very evenly with both sides doing their best to play football on what was a tough pitch. We slowly started to gain the upper hand, and as a result, the chances began to flow. Alistar Yates was causing all sorts of problems up front and from a cross into the box his looping header left the keeper stranded but came back off the post. Moments later he broke free into the box and with just the keeper to beat his left footed shot went just wide. We were creating chance after chance and after some good work out wide from Silao, Martin Packers shot came back out off the cross bar again. 0-0 at half time. The second half was a much tighter, scrappier game with Upper Hutt tightening up their defence making chances harder to come by. After an even 20 minutes Jamie Mason made a good run down the right and managed to cut in and bury a shot with his left foot, nice goal! It didn’t take long for Upper Hutt to hit back though, a cross from the left and their striker somehow managed to sneak the ball in at the near post. Went hit the lead again soon after when Martin put an in swinging cross for Ali Yates to get on the end of with his head! From here we needed to hold on and do nothing silly. We did this well until the last minute when we gave away a needless free kick just outside the box. The cross came in which we did well to head away, unfortunately header fell straight to the feet of their striker who buried the finish. A 2-2 draw which, was a decent result considering Upper hutt had won all but one of their previous game, but 2 points thrown away due to missed chances in the first half, and poor decisions when the game was winding down. Chatham Cup: Saturday 23rd June 2012. Stop Out vs Upper Hutt. (Harcourt Park) 2-4 WIN. Scorer: Fisum Aden, Cherbel Khouchaba, Alistair Yates(2) MOM: Blair Easthope When we drew Upper Hutt in the cup the lads were over the moon, we have built a good rivalry over the last few years and this was a big chance for us to get one up over them. Upper Hutt are top of the league and are yet to be beaten, but we knew that we would head to Harcourt in a confident mood given our run of results in the cup. The locals of Upper Hutt had really put in the effort to make the day a big occasion, lining the ground with orange and black balloons, and turning up in large numbersto create a great atmosphere. We got off to a horror start. A long ball slipped through our back four and into the path of their striker, who dribbled towards Vinnie and managed to scoop the ball into the back of the net, a great finish and a tough way to start the game. The way we reacted to the goal was outstanding, and within 2 minutes we had equalised. We worked the ball down the left and released Brandon Tai who put in a superb cross that found Fizz at the far post, who showed great composure to take a touch and slot the ball home. 1-1 after 6 minutes! This got our confidence up and from here we really started to control the game. We worked the ball out to Jake who cut in and chipped a ball inside to release Cherbel ‘why aren’t Brazil at the Euros’ Kouchaba, who took a brilliant touch into his path and buried the finish- an outstanding piece of skill from a 14 year old kid in a huge game. We were on fire and soon after Ali Yates had made it 3. After receiving the ball with his back to goal he turned, ran at his defender, pulled out a shimmy that bamboozled the defender , then laced (shanked) a left footed shot into the back of the net. Brilliant from Yatesy, and the way he turned on the after burners during his celebration was something else. 3-1 up and it got better from there. Some more great work down the right from Jake Theron saw him whip in a cross that the Upper Hutt centre back could only clear straight up in the air, to fall for Yatesy who headed in from a tight angle. A fantastic double for Ali, the big kumara was in for a treat tonight! We went into half time 4-1 up. We came out in the 2nd half knowing that if we played smart the game was ours. Upper Hutt started to throw players forward in an attempt to pull a goal back, and started putting us under real pressure. At times we dealt with the pressure well, and at times we didn’t. Vinnie was doing a great job in goal dealing with cross after cross, but with 15 to go the pressure finally told. By this stage we had Cherbel cramping up and Beeza hobbling around on one leg and after a goal mouth scramble Upper Hutt managed to bundle one in. From here we closed the game out well and got through to the final whistle for a 4-2 win.An outstanding performance from the lads, who continue to step up on the big occasions. The cup dream continues! Round 11: Saturday 16th June 2012. Stop Out vs Miramar. (Hutt Park) 5-1 WIN. Scorer: Jake Theron 3, Martin Packer, Fisum Aden MOM:Martin Packer With Miramar 7 points ahead of us, and the teams behind us 1 point off, today was a win at all costs scenario. Our frustrating start to the season has turned every week into a must win, but today was very important. Being the middle of winter today was a typical Wellington day, freezing cold southerly and driving rain to add to the fun. This is what football is all about! Right from kick off we adjusted to the conditions very well, playing our passing style to very good effect. We were really dominating and getting into dangerous positions, though the slippery conditions were making it tough to get the final product we were looking for. Soon enough Fizz got onto the ball just outside the box, skipped past his man and slotted the ball home for a great goal. 1-0 up. Before we knew it was two, some good work from Yatesy to get to the by-line and cut the ball back to Jake to tap in at the far post, a quality team goal. 2-0 at halftime and we were really on top, the talk to the lads was to keep the foot on the pedal, and not let Miramar into the game! We came out with the same attitude in the second half, really taking the game to Miramar despite playing into the howling southerly. We went 3-0 up after some more good work from Yatesy leading to another Jake tap in at the far post. From here the game started to get sloppy and our standards dropped, which resulted in us conceding a soft goal, frustrating to say the least! Conceding gave us a wakeup call and we made it 4-1 when Martin Packer bent a free kick into the top corner. We rounded the game off with a counter attack where Yatesy beat his man and his shot from outside the box came off the crossbar to land at the feet of, you guessed it, Jake Theron! A hat trick for Jake from a combined 6 yards, credit to him for being in the right place. A 5-1 win and a good performance from the lads, bring on Upper Hutt in the cup next week! Round 10: Sunday 10th June 2012. Stop Out vs Olympic. (Wakefield Park) 1-1draw. Scorer: Martin Packer MOM:Vinnie Godwin After beating Olympic 1st team in the cup last week, playing the Olympic reserve team in the league was always going to be an awkward fixture. The game started evenly with either side unable to get the upper hand, with a couple of half chances at either the end the only highlights of an even first 30 minutes. Olympic started playing some good stuff and a ball from midfield slotted the wide player in for a one on one with Vin, as he touched the ball to get into a scoring position, Vin managed to get a hand to the ball to save a certain goal, brilliant goalkeeping. Soon after we hustled the ball off Olympic in a dangerous position and Lionel was played in on goal, he managed to beat the keeper and then shoot with his left, but unfortunately his effort didn’t have enough on it and was cleared off the line. We went into halftime 0-0 Second half started poorly for us with the Olympic winger being played in down the left and cutting in to square across the box for the opposite winger to bury a finish into the top corner. For the third game in a row we found ourselves 1-0 down. We reacted well to going down and started to get the upper hand on the game, and after some good from Jake out wide he found Martin at the far post who finish well to take the scores to 1-1. From here we really started to create some chances and put some real pressure on. A couple of free kicks in good positions couldn’t be capitalised on, and a lot of good play went unrewarded. In the last few minutes super sub Yatesey got onto the end of a cross with his header sailing in their keeper pulled off a miracle save to keep the score at 1-1. A 1-1 draw, not the result we were looking for, but we can take encouragement from the fact we created a lot of chances. The next few weeks will be crucial for us. Stop Out vs Olympic (Chatham Cup Rd 2) Wakefield Park Result. 4-2 win AET Scorers: Aden 1, Yates 1, Gulley 2. MOM: Fisum Aden After our poor result against Wellington United, we were determined to put on a good display in our cup game, away to Olympic at Wakefield Park. Our last cup game was against Western Suburbs who we beat 3-1, so we knew we were capable of stepping up against Central league sides. We made a very good start to the game, putting some good moves together, and absorbing any pressure. Our plan was to let the Olympic back four keep the ball, and then pounce when they tried to play forward. This was working to very good effect with Matt Gasper defending from the front particularly well. After 20 minutes Olympic won a corner which was whipped into Barry Lewis who powered home a header, a good header but poor marking from our lads. We hit back straight away playing the ball through our midfield to Gasper who slotted Fizz in to round the keeper and slot the ball with his right foot, which is usually for standing on only! Great pace and composure in front of goal. The rest of the half was pretty even, with both teams threatening, and Vinnie making a couple of fine stops, neither side could add to the score. We went into halftime 1-1. The second half started with Olympic starting to get on top, and with us starting to go off our game as a result. The pace they had up top was starting to cause us some real headaches. We kept our composure and started to come back into the game, causing the Olympic lads to get frustrated, which resulted in one of them picking up their second yellow, injuring Fizz in the process. This gave us the encouragement we needed and with 15 to go after some good passing through the midfield Steve managed to get a shot off from the edge of the box which snuck in the bottom corner. From here we tried to close the game out, which is always tough against a good side, and can work against you if you don’t do it well. In injury time we gave the ball away in our half, which was chipped in behind our back four, the pace of Abba got onto the end of it only for Vin to make another brilliant stop, but unluckily the rebound looped up for their striker to head home. We were heading to extra time. We managed to step it up a gear in extra time, with our hard work at training, and having an extra man beginning to show. Martin Packer managed to line and fire in a low cross for our substitute, goal a game Ali, to get on the end of to put us up 3-2. We kept the pressure on and their goalkeeper picked up an injury and had to come off, with Olympic having used all three subs and already being a man down, their midfielder had to take the gloves! Soon after we won a free kick on the edge of the box, which Steve put away to put us 4-2 up. A 4-2 win and a brilliant effort from the lads, the key is getting this kind of performance every week! Round 9: Saturday 2nd June 2012. Stop Out vs Wellington United. (Newtown Park) Loss 1-2 Scorer: Matt Gasper MOM: Jamie Mason If there’s one park that the lads always enjoy playing at, its Newtown Park; the fantastic surface suits our passing game. We began the game well, although Wgtn United were doing a good job of breaking down our attacks, packing the midfield and getting men behind the ball. United were playing a very direct game, and one of these long balls resulted in the first goal. A clearance had our centre backs back pedalling, with J.T. managing to get to the ball first, but his back pass was under hit allowing the striker to nip in and a one-on-one with Vin which he put away nicely. We continued to try and play our game for the rest of the first half, without managing a breakthrough. 1-0 down at halftime we were confident that we had what it takes to turn the score line around and get the result we wanted. The 2nd half was very similar to the first, with us playing all the football and Wgtn United playing the long ball at every chance. We managed to create a couple of clear-cut chances, with Matt Gasper getting free inside the box, just bending his left footer around the post. Soon after Jake managed to dispossess the goalkeeper, only to get bumped off the ball trying to line up the shot, instead of laying off to Gasper who was open to score. Against the run of play Wgtn United managed to work the ball up our end and win a corner. The delivery found their player who buried a fantastic header, but some very slack marking meaning he was all by himself. 2-0 down. We continued to dominate and from a corner Matt Gasper pulled one back with his head. From here we thought we could come back and steal a result, and we created a couple of chances but could put any in the back of the net. A 2-1 loss, poor result, bad decision making and slack marking costing us on the day. Round 8: Saturday 26th May. Stop Out vs Petone. (Hutt Park) Result: 3-1 win Scorers: Yates, Theron, Gulley. MOM: Damon Fussell We welcomed Petone to Hutt park knowing we would be in for a tough challenge, whilst they are yet to pick up any points in the league, we knew they had a strong squad who hadn’t had things go their way. With us winning our last two games it was important that we kept the roll going with a win! The emphasis in the last few weeks has been about the attitude we take out in each game, knowing that the talent we have in the squad can only be effective with the right attitude. This paid off early in the game with us having Petone under pressure straight from kick off. We managed to win a corner which Martin Packer whipped to the far post where he found Nathan-Laurent Blanc- Canton, who headed it back across to the master poacher Alistar Yates to bundle in with his knee. We continued pile on the pressure with Alistar managing to tackle their centre back, then take the ball to the by line and fire a cut-back to Steve which he couldn’t quite manage to get on target, a difficult chance missed. After a dominant half in which we created chances and looked dangerous with the ball, as well as being very solid at the back we went into half time 1-0 up. Second half started very well for us with some good passing getting Martin Packer 1 on 1 with his man out wide, who he skilfully beat to then fire a low cross for Jake at the back post to tap in and break his 2 year Stop out goal drought. Soon after some brilliant work from Jake down the left led to a cut back for Fizz which he fired to the back post where, you guessed it, Ali Yates was standing to tap in, only then to be bizarrely ruled out for offside. This was made worse by the fact that Petone then went up the other end to beat the offside trap for a tidy finish to make it 2-1. We managed to put the game away after some great work out wide from super sub Lionel Taylor, who put in a dangerous cross which the keeper could only punch, with Steve leaping high in the air beating two defenders to power home a header from the rebound. A good performance to win 3-1, with a special mention to Martin Packer for his good form which continued into the night, only to be cut short by a beer pong injury! A special mention for Demolition man Damon also, who had an outstanding game to receive the man of the match. Round 7: Saturday 19th May vsWainuiomata (Hutt Park) Result: 3 -1 win Scorers: Yates 2, Gulley 1 MOM: Jake Theron We welcomed Wainui to Hutt Park knowing that nothing less than a win would do. Given our tough start to the season, and our great win in the cup last week against Wests, it was important to keep the momentum going. Our run of bad luck with injuries continued with goalkeeper Vinnie Godwin rolling his ankle on the steps outside his house as he was leaving for the game! This meant Jack Kemp, who has been having a fantastic season so far, would step in between the sticks. Also due to injuries, coach Easthope was named on the team card which had the Wainui lads shaking in their boots, his pace and new haircut up top could be a real handful coming off the bench late on. To the game and there was a classic howling Wellington southerly blowing through Hutt park which is always tough to play in. We settled in very well and managed to get our passing game going through the midfield, bringing our front three into play very effectively. Jake and Fizz were causing headaches out wide, with Alistair doing a great job of holding the ball up. We had Wainui under pressure and it soon paid off with Martin Packer curling a great cross to the far post where Alistair out-muscled his defender to send a looping header back over the keeper. Soon after, Alistair received the ball on the edge of the box, and given a yard of space, he turned, and buried a finish into the bottom corner. Great stuff! Against the run of play, Wainui managed to win a penalty. Their striker put it away nicely, which took us into half time, 2-1 up. Second half we had the wind at our backs and spent the majority of the half down Wainui’s end, creating chances but not managing to put any away. That was until a great run down the right from Jake Theron followed by a pinpoint cut back (which Yatesy had a swing and a miss at, making it look like a great dummy) to Steve on the edge of the box to finish. From here we closed the game out well to win 3-1. A good performance from the lads in testing conditions, we must keep the momentum going into next week against Petone. Saturday 12th May 2012. Stop Out vs Western Suburbs (Chatham Cup) Result: 3-1 win. Goals - Martin Packer x 2, Steve Gulley. MOM - Martin Packer. With our recent results in the league being below par, today's Chatham Cup game gave us a fresh chance to focus on a good performance in a game that some people maybe didn't expect us to win. Both teams made it clear early on that they were keen to try and maintain possession on what is a very good surface here at Hutt Park. Our first goal came from some getting some consistent and decent balls into the box. Wests didn't clear the ball far enough and it fell Martin Packer on the edge of the area, he touched the ball inside and bent a great curling shot into the top left hand corner of the Western Suburbs goal, 20 minutes played, 1-0 up. Martin's goal managed to get rid of some of the nerves we seemed to be playing with and helped the game open up. Both teams were still moving the ball well but we were now starting get in behind them a little more and create chances. Our defense was also looking very solid after a shaky early start where West's managed to get behind us a little to easy at times. Now dominating the game our midfield was winning a lot of ball and moving it well out into the wide area's, Alistair Yates was also being very busy and bringing people into the game well and it looked a matter time before we got another good chance. 10 minutes later we got that chance, another ball into the area that this time found its way to Steve Gulley who clinically slotted his finish into the bottom corner for a 2-0 lead. With halftime approaching Wests managed to get the ball into our penalty area, the ball was cleared to just outside the area, unfortunately for us it went straight to a Western Suburbs player who lashed a first time shot that riffled past Vinnie Godwin in goal, 2-1 at halftime. The half time chat was and feel in the changing rooms was a good one for us and we came out in the second half in a confident mood. Unfortunately that didn't turn into goals for us and then midway through the second half Blair Easthope was given his second yellow card and we were reduced to 10 men. We still continued to defend strongly and our centre back pairing of our captain Jason Tipping and young Nathan Canton were keeping the result confidently in our hands . The only goal of the second half came from Martin Packer and was straight from a corner, he swung the ball in and it went past everyone and into the back of the net, 3-1. That's how the game finished and deservedly we had won. Some really good performances from all round the park from us today. Vinnie made some excellent saves early in the game to keep us ahead at a crucial time and the back four defended well for most of the match. Our midfield of Beezer, Steve and Martin were outstanding today and I was very happy with the work rate of all our players. Round 6: Satuday 5th May 2012. Stop Out vs Waterside. (Karori Park) 0-2 Loss MOM- Nathan Canton We went to Karori Park hoping to stop a run of poor results, knowing that a win could be the start of the turn-around we were looking for. Karori is always a tough place to visit, with a combination of the pitch, and traditionally tough Karori sides, although to be fair the pitch was looking in great condition. We were put under early pressure early by a hungry Karori side, creating a couple of early chances early. After we soaked up the early pressure we started getting our passing game going knocking the ball around nicely, without any real penetration. 20 minutes into the game the Karori striker managed to pick up the ball between the back four and midfield, to turn and fire a good low finish from 25 yards. What happened 5 minutes later summed up our luck so far this year. Off the ball the Karori striker tried to push Lionel out the way, with Lionel wondering what the guys was doing, he took a huge dive fooling the linesman into thinking Lionel had hit him to the ground. On the linesman’s recommendation, Lionel received a straight red card. We went into half time 1-0 down, with 10 men, and a real battle on our hands. 2nd half we started playing some really good football, actually completely dominating the game despite our disadvantage. Karori were content to sit on their lead which was playing into our hands. We were keeping the ball and managing to get in behind but just couldn’t quite get the finishing touch. We really started to chase the game which resulted in giving the ball away down our end for the Karori winger to take towards goal and finish. A 2-0 loss but a good effort from the lads, can’t fault the attitude. Round 5: Saturday 28th April 2012. Stop Out v Island Bay. (Hutt Park) Result – 2 nil loss MOM – Nathan Canton The early stages of the game were very niggly and both teams were breaking up attacks with fouls. Both teams were having their fair share of possession but not managing to create many clear cut chances until Island Bay managed to work the ball forward to James Wypych, he made himself a half yard and shot the ball across the keeper and into the far post corner of the net, 1-0 Island Bay. The game then struggled its way through to half time with some scrappy play, again a lot of the time play was being broken up by consistent fouls. We came out early in the second half and put some pressure on Island Bay with some better build up play but still couldn't manage to get the ball in the back of the net. Half chances to Martin Packer and Matt Gasper came and went and we were still being frustrated with consistent fouls breaking up attacks. Midway through the second half Island Bay got a rather hopeful ball into the box that was not dealt with and allowed to bounce, Jamie Mason was then deemed to have committed a foul on the Island Bay striker in his attempt to shield the bouncing ball, as it was in the box a penalty was given, another very harsh decision that does not seem to often go our way. The penalty was converted well and Island Bay were 2-0 up. This saw us come into our best patch of the match and we really started to get the ball into the attacking 3rd a lot more frequently. Island Bay were sitting deep and looking to hold on and we were taking advantage of having a lot of possession. Unfortunately for us this period of play did not last long enough as Adam Church was then sent off with around 15-20 minutes still to play for a rather silly retaliation to one of the many poor challenges in this game. That effectively also saw the end of a last major push from us in this game and before we knew it the game was over. Another disappointing result but still some encouraging signs starting to appear. Round 4: 21st April 2012. Stop Out vs Marist. (Kilbirnie Park) 1-1 draw. Scorer: Steve Gulley MOM: Damon Fussell With the last couple of results not going our way, our trip to Kilbirnie Park became crucial, 3 points was a must! Marist is probably the toughest away trip in the league, a combination of a suspect pitch, and the hustle bustle never say die attitude of the Marist sides guaranteeing a tough day at the office. We went into this game with a plan to play a more direct game, changing from our usual 3 midfielders and 3 up top, to 2 strikers and 4 across the midfield. As we worked our way into the game this began to pay dividends, Matt Gasper and Churchy were working well together up front, with Gasper getting in behind the back four and causing headaches for the Marist defenders. From a ball in behind Gasper managed to outmuscle his defender and get himself into a 1 on 1 with the keeper, the keeper using reverse psychology by staying planted to his line, confusing Gasper into finishing straight into his legs! After another couple of decent chances we went into halftime locked up at 0-0. Second half we started to really get on top of the game, without creating too many chances at first. Against the run of play Marist managed to work the ball into our penalty area, with Jase Tipping dispossessing the striker, we looked to be out of danger. What happened next was hard to fathom, the Marist striker pulled Jase by his shirt off the ball, then took his legs out for good measure. Foul we thought, no, the ref waves play on and the striker lays the ball off for his teammate to finish past Vinnie. This only served to spur us on to really start dominating and creating chances, from a Damon long ball, Churchy snuck in behind the defenders to finish expertly past the keeper, only to be amazingly ruled offside. Amazingly, because when the ball was played, Churchy was in his own half! More chances came with Brandon-turtleneck-Tai putting a header over from in front, and a couple of air swings in front of goal, making it seem it was not our day. Eventually from a short corner the ball managed to find its way into the back of the net, much to our relief locking the game up. We continued to dominate but could not find the winner. A disappointing result, but the work rate and attitude of the lads cannot be questioned. We will start putting our chances away which will see us get the results we want, and challenging for the title which we know we are capable of. Round 3: Saturday 14th April 2012. Stop Out vs Upper Hutt (Hutt Park) Result: 1-2 loss. Goal: Adam Church MOM: Adam Church We welcomed Upper Hutt to Hutt Park this week for what was always going to be a very tough and close encouter. The first half kicked off with both teams playing it fairly safe first and hoping for an early mistake. A few half chances were created in the first 20 minutes but none taken for either side. Both sides were starting to get a little frustrated and fouls were now becoming more and more frequent as both teams looked to stop the other breaking quickly, this period was also now starting to produce a few cards. With both sides not making anything of their half chances it was always going to take something special to break the game open. Midway through the 1st half we managed to work the ball up to Steve Gulley in the attacking 3rd, he rolled the ball into Adam Church's feet on the edge of the area and continued a nice run off him, Churchy managed to roll off his marker to get a good sight at goal, he then bent the ball into the to far post corner with the outside of his left foot to put us in front at 1-0. With the deadlock broken the game opened up a bit and both teams continued to foul. Not long after our opening goal one of those fouls was to prove one too many. Upper Hutt got a free kick in a wide are in the attacking 3rd and crossed a ball into the peanalty area, it wasn't dealt with and the ball fell to Phil Patterson, he cut the ball back accross the box to an unmarked Pedro Garcias who tapped in to even the scores 1-1, this is how it would remain through till half time. Second half kicked off with both teams looking eager for a result. Again we were looking lively and creating a few chances but again unfortunately none were being converted into goals. Matt Gasper coming the closest for us after a well worked bit of ball movement he cut in from the wide area towards goal and unleashed a great strike that cannoned off the crossbar. The second spell went on and chances continued to come and go but Upper Hutt were awarded a peanelty after the linesmen had flagged for a rather harsh hand ball against Jamie Mason in the box. Phil Patterson stepped up for Upper Hutt and appeared confident but his shot was kept out by goo save from our keeper Vinnie Godwin. Chassing the game we decide to introduce some late pace in the form of Fissum Aden and it with only minutes left it looked to have paid off. Fissum was expertly clipped in on goal and slotted the ball home nicely only to see the linesmen's flag raised for offside. Another frustrating day at the office where we had definitly played well enough to get something from the game. Round 2: Monday 9th April 2012 vs Miramar Rangers (Miramar Park) Result: 2-0 Loss MOM: (16) Jason Tipping After an entertaining opening game at Hutt Park it was off to Miramar to take on Miramar Rangers. With the great surface of Davey F having some work done, the game was relocated to a pitch right at the other end of the scale, Miramar Park. Both teams were playing a fairly cautious game in the first 20 minutes as they looked to come to grips with the difficult surface and it became clear that the team who made least defensive mistakes would probably pick up the points today. As the first half went on we managed to create a few chances by working the ball out Matt Gasper who was making his first start for Sop Out a decent one. Twice Gasper managed to beat his marker out in the wide area and pick out a smart run from Adam Church who was getting in behind the Miramar centre backs; unfortunately Church couldn't make the most of those chances and after a couple more half chances for either side we entered half time locked up at 0-0. We came out for the second half knowing that the team who scored first would go a long way to winning today. Miramar had a good mix of experience and youth out on the pitch for them and were sticking to a rather direct style of getting the ball forward towards their handy strike force of Sutherland and Zanotto. The game was becoming quite scrappy and we continued to pass the ball poorly. Fifteen minutes into the second half Miramar worked the ball forward, one of our centre backs went in to make a challenge on the Miramar striker, the ball deflected up off the two players and into the feet of Zanotto who suddenly found himself in front of goal, he made no mistake with the finish, 1-0 Miramar. With chances being few and far between it was a frustrating second half for us. As the half went on we made a second mistake. Another long ball forward wasn't dealt with and as our centre back slid across to clean up and head a bouncing ball away, he managed to head it into the path of a Miramar attacker. The Miramar attacker squared the ball across to an unmarked Sutherland who again made no mistake with his finish, 2-0 Miramar. We were now forced to chase this game and all three subs were made, Ali Yates, Jake Theron and Fisum Aden replaced Adam Church, Matt Gasper and Martin Packer. Unfortunately for us, apart from a penalty shout, we didn't manage to create many chances for the rest of the second half. A very frustrating day at the office ended in a 2-0 defeat. Many mistakes were made today and perhaps one of them was not emphasizing enough the need to play quite direct on the surface we had to play on. There were still some positives to take away from the game. Churchy made some smart runs to get in behind them in the first half; Gasper caused their right back all sorts of trouble at times and Jason Tipping played his usual controlled and calming role at the back. All the boys were putting it in out their today and as long as we maintain that kind of work rate and fix up a few other things, I think we will still have a very positive season. It was a disappointing performance in possession but a big chance to turn things right around this week. Round 1: 6th April 2012 vs Olympic (Hutt Park) Result: 5-3 Win Scorer(s): Adam Church 2, Alistair Yates, Martin Packer, Lionel Taylor. MOM: (13) Lionel Taylor With good preparation for this game, we started fairly well and put Olympic under some early pressure. Early on Olympic were also showing that they were a good team in possession and were putting together some decent fazes without creating too many chances. Midway through the first half we managed to work the ball out to Martin Packer who was in good space out wide. He swiftly made his way down the line and delivered a ball towards the back post. Alistair Yates timed his arrival to the back post well and headed home - his and the team's first league goal for the season. Both teams continued to move the ball well and create a half chance or two but we entered halftime leading 1-0. We came out for the second half in a confident mood and managed to start dictating play with our midfield of Steve Gulley, Lionel Taylor and Blair Easthope now dominating and creating chances for us. Early in the second half we were forced to make a change with Damon Fussell replacing Fisum Aden Fisum. This meant a reshuffle with Lionel moving to the right wing and Damon into central midfield. After a good spell of pressure we managed to move the ball quickly out to Martin Packer who had isolated his marker, he squared his marker up and with a sharp step over he worked the ball inside his man and towards goal where he didn't need a second invitation to clinically slot home a good second goal to make it 2-0. A third goal came hot on the heels of the 2nd goal. Jamie Mason was the provider after winning possession for us; he quickly spotted the run of Stop Out debutant Lionel Taylor. Lionel latched on to the pass and calmly slotted the ball past the Olympic keeper for a well deserved goal. During this period we made two additional changes with Adam Church on debut for the club replacing first half goal scorer Alistair Yates and Finn Sorger replacing Blair Easthope. This meant a reshuffle with Finn coming on at right back and Jamie moving into midfield in place of Blair. As was the case early in the first half, Olympic were still putting together some nice pieces of play of their own together and it wasn't long before they would get some reward. A break down the right hand side saw a decent Olympic cross into the box towards their tidy number 19. He had a good set up touch and banged home Olympics first goal - 3-1. With their tales up Olympic started to push hard, and with our team starting to struggle a bit with cramps and injuries. With 10 minutes to play and two goals up we slipped into our worst period of the game. Olympic were becoming more and more confident and again attacked down our right side. The ball then made its way to Olympic's tricky young striker who again made us pay with a second well taken goal, 3-2 and a nervy 5 minutes still to play. Soon after kicking off we again had to defend a fast break down our right hand side, Olympic again managed to get in behind our defence and their number 19 slipped the ball past an advancing Vinnie Godwin and into our goal to complete his hat-trick and rather shockingly tying up the game 3-3. With stoppage time fast approaching both teams pushed for a winner, substitute Damon Fussell won possession for us in our own half after some more good defensive work and drove towards the Olympic defence. Adam Church’s good run was then spotted by Damon who slid him through nicely on goal; with a good set up touch Adam lashed the ball home from the edge of the area for his first goal for Stop Out, 4-3 Stop Out. In stoppage time Olympic were extending themselves to find an equaliser. Again we managed to pick up a loose pass and quickly break through Lionel Taylor on the right hand side; he looked up and played the ball across to Adam Church who clinically lifted the ball over the keeper and into the goal to seal a rather exciting first win of the season for us, Stop Out 5-3. Thanks to Olympic for playing their part in a really entertaining opening game of the season. Not exactly the whole performance we were looking for from the boys but a win none the less. Congratulations to Lionel Taylor who was named man of the match today, he had a very busy game in midfield for us today, set up a goal, scored one himself and covered a lot of ground for the team.

6th April 2012 vs Olympic (Hutt Park) Result: 5-3 Win Scorers: Adam Church 2, Alistair Yaes, Martin PAcker, Lionel Taylor.

Capital Premier 2011 Match reports
- Stop Out Sports Club
- Round 15 vs Wellington Olympic 1-0 win (SGulley) We travelled to Wakefield Park for our first match on the turf in 3 years last week. With the temperature a cool 2 degrees and wind chill factor in the negatives this was never an easy fixture. We started superbly though getting the ball down and creative clear cut chances. Fisem came close on 2 occasions and Steve managed to hit the inside of both posts only to have the ball come out! Olympic proved tough opponenent though and it was only through some fine wingplay by Brenton and Sam that we managed to open them up. Brenton crossed the ball for Steve at the far post to chip into the net aided by desperate defenders. At 1-0 up we kicked on for the second goal and near misses to James, Steve, fisem and Brenton kept us nervous until the end. We were not to be undone and our solid defensive unit continued its fine work this season by keeping another clean sheet for a valuable 1-0 victory. Man of Match- Steve Gulley Today we see our final home fixture for 2011. I want to to thank all of the supporters who come along each rain or shine to support the players. I am impressed by the numbers we get week in week out and this season we have had great larger numbers each week. I want to thank the President and Executive Committee for all their fine work this season. Every member has contributed greatly towards us moving forward as a club. I want to also thank all of our superb Sponsors as your contributions are so valuable to us. As the Senior season comes to a close I hope many of you can continue your support of our next generation of players by coming along to support our Under 19s as we embark on another journey towards the Nationals in Napier in October. Thanks for a great season you Stop Outs Director of Football, Besim Balicevac Round 14 vs Wellington United 2-3 loss (ASheikh RSteele) Wellington United came to Hutt Park for this all important season defining fixture. With captain Steve and Jamie serving suspensions we used the full depth of our squad with full confidence in securing winning result. The first half was a bit tentative from us perhaps adjusting to a few positional changes and after a minor lapse defensively we found ourselves going in 1-0 down at ht. We had finished the half very strongly and Sams near post shot late on proved we could get in behind the Utd defence. The second half started superbly from us by getting the ball down and passing efficiently and quickly. Great ball speed and movement allowed us to attack Utd time and time again. We got level when Abass hit a dipping left foot shot in from the edge of the box which gave us the initiative to push on. Soon after we gained a penalty when Sam was brought down and Regan slid in a fine penalty for 2-1. Mike then got through from a great build up but hit his shot and narrowly over the bar. With 10 minutes to play we struggled to maintain our shape and uncharacteristically retreated towards our goal holding our lead. This proved costly as with 5 minutes to play their deadly striker equalised and only 2 minutes after our misplaced free kick Utd scored a winner in the 89th minute. A devastating blow for us in our title challenge. The team worked so hard against a hugely difficult opponent and for that I was proud. Man of the Match- Aleem Sheikh Round 13 vs Island Bay 2-0 win (SBlackburn SGulley) Island Bay were our visitors for this all important match in the race for the title. Island Bay started strongly and with us not settling we were caught out a few times and after some poor defending Island Bay had a penalty which Vinnie saved superbly with his feet having dived away to his left. This spurred us on and was the kick in the butt that we needed. We gained the ascendency and were well on top by winning the midfield battle. Close opportunities fell to Sam and Brenton which really should’ve been goals. Sam then gave us a deserved halftime lead when beautifully chipping the keeper when through on goal. Halftime 1-0. The second half was well controlled by us as Island Bay started chasing the game. Controlled possession allowed us to open up their defence and after Fisem was upended by their keeper Steve put home the penalty for a superb 2-0 victory. Another determined display saw us move to 2nd on the table and within reach of the league leaders. Man of the Match- Vinnie Godwin Round 12 vs Marist 1-0 win (RSteele) It was back to league action after our huge Cup match the prior week and a difficult opponent in Marist who we had dropped points against earlier in the season. Having no outdoor training during the week due to the bad weather and another heavy pitch we moved across to our number 2 field for this very important game. Our start was very good quickly getting into our game and making excellent use of the flanks. Regan got in behind their defence after a nice passing move but the finish never eventuated as Fisem and Sam were snuffed out at the far post by some desperate defending. Fisem then should’ve given us a lead when through from a tight angle he screwed his right foot shot wide. Halftime 0-0 was disappointing and our level of play was not good. We asked for more discipline patience and greater work ethic in turning things around. The players responded immediately and after Sam showed some great skill in beating his marker he delivered a fine ball for Regan to beat the keeper to the ball at the far post for 1-0. The rest of the match was ugly to say the least. No rhythm but a huge battle. What was pleasing was our group defending and the performance of our defence with Luke H and Jason centrally allowing them no opportunities. 3 points were gained today with a battling performance and that was hugely important as we stay in the race for the title. Man of the Match- Mike Hagarty Round 11 vs Miramar 4-1 win (SBlackburn RSteele SGulley 2) It was back to league action with a very important season make or break match against Miramar. A team we hadn’t beaten in our last 3 matches was always going to be a difficult opponent. The heavy rain during the week meant the match was played on a very wet surface. Right from the outset the players looked up for the match by winning the initial battle and getting the ball moving. Free flowing and good movement meant we pegged Miramar back and after a fine build up Sam curled in a nice shot for 1-0. The goal was a boost and allowed us to fully manipulate possession and have fullbacks overlapping. After a nice overlap with Sam, Aleem delivered a great cross for Regan to strike home a good finish into the roof of the net. 2-0 halftime. After one of our best 45 minutes of football all season the call was to complete the 90 minutes in the same way and this we did. Sam was upended by their keeper and Steve easily completed the scoring from the spot for 3-0 midway through the second half. A Miramar goal was quickly extinguished when Sam cut back for Steve to complete the scoring at 4-1. Man of the Match- Sam Blackburn This match showed the football that this team can produce and the football and finishing that will be required to push towards the league title. Self belief, hard work and continued development of individual skills will go a long way to making it reality. Chatham Cup Round 3 vs Napier City Rovers 0-1 loss The last 32 of the Chatham Cup saw the visit of 4 time Cup winner Napier City Rovers. A club with a huge tradition and the in form team with an 8 match undefeated run which included a 5-0 demolition of Central League leaders Miramar in the previous round. Having done our homework on Napier we went into this match well prepared with the players full of confidence. A rain sodden pitch wasn’t going to help either team with so many puddles nearly making the match unplayable. We faced a stiff crosswind in the first spell but managed to settle quickly. Steve managed to set Regan free on a few occasions to get in behind their big defence allowing us to play in the opposition half. Napier played very direct and looked to get ball early into strikers which we repelled with superb group defending with Luke and Jase and Blair often blocking channelled balls. Our one first half lapse led to a free-kick from an awkward angle and with the help of the crosswind Napier scored direct from the set piece to take the lead. Stout defending and controlled passing allowed us to play out the half only 1-0 down. We wanted to get at Napier in the second half with the slight cross breeze with us. Although we didn’t have free flowing football we managed to move the ball around but just lacked the final delivery into the danger zones. We had to gamble and with 10 to play pushed more players forward in search of the equaliser. This we thought we had when Steves early strike was saved by the keeper onto the inside of the post and back onto the keeper! Second half sub James then rolled his marker and played in Steve who just before shooting had the ball stop in the puddle with the goal in sight. 0-1 fulltime. Man of the Match- Jason Tipping Despite not progressing I am proud of the performance the team showed against a very strong team. The team worked extremely hard both tactically and physically. If we continue to play at this level for the remainder of our season good results will happen. I want to thank all our supporters for coming down and being our 12th player. Great stuff Chatham Cup Round 2 vs Inglewood 5-0 win (SGulley 2 RSteele 2 SBlackburn ) Inglewood from New Plymouth made their way to Hutt Park on Queens Birthday Monday. After a gruelling physical fixture on Saturday we started without our usual intensity and spark. Chances went begging also and the halftime score of 0-0 was fair reflection on a poor effort from our team. With a good stern serving at halftime and the threat of egg on faces the players quickly came out for the second half and got into gear. Ball speed and movement killed off our opponents. With goals to Steve 2 Regan 2 and Sammy a comprehensive 5-0 saw us move into round 3 of the Chatham Cup which is the last 32 teams in New Zealand. Man of the Match- Luke Wilson, Steve Gulley At the halfway point in the season we sit 5th on the table but still very much in the title hunt. It will take a massive effort to win the league which the players are all well aware of. Our fine Chatham Cup run continues with an appetising match against Napier City Rovers. An exciting time for players coaching staff and all involved. We really need everyone on deck and up for this one as this is a great chance for Stop Out Sports club to showcase itself on the National scene. So get along and cheer your hearts for the Red and Golds on Sunday 19th June. Round 10 vs Upper Hutt 1-2 loss (J Mason) Defending champions Upper Hutt were our opponents in a crucial fixture towards the title race. We adopted an attacking formation with Brenton Fisem and Sam up top and a midfield trio of Abass Steve and Mike. Aleem Jase LukeW and Jamie made up the defensive quartet with Vinnie in goal. Our start was excellent. Immediate pressure with good ball movement and intensity saw us move Upper Hutt all over the park. A fantastic build up and Sammy cross saw a lovely Fizz header tipped over the bar by their keeper. Steve then went close with a rasping volley that clipped the bar. Halftime 0-0. With so much dominance we asked for the same intensity but with better delivery into the box to give us the edge. This we didn’t get. Our intensity diminished and Upper Hutt grew strength having weathered the storm. With 20 minutes to play Upper Hutt scored to take the lead after a defensive mix up and some sheer luck. The ball agonisingly finding its way across our goal line after their striker got a toe onto his challenge. Our character to get back into the match was good and with 10 minutes to play Brenton never gave up on a loose ball and crossed into the danger zone for Jamie to stoop home and elegantly finish at the far post with a neat header. 1-1. Our day ended on a sour not when with 3 minutes to play after a midfield challenge the ball spun off into the path of their striker who laced home for 2-1. Yet again we were foiled at the finish in a match we didnt deserve to lose. The cruel nature of Football won out today as can sometimes be the case with the beautiful game. Man of the Match- Abass Sheikh Round 9 vs Wainuiomata 5-0 win (LHartstonge SBlackburn FAden 2 SGulley) Prouse park was the venue for our round 9 fixture against a Wainui team with many ex- Stop Out players. A difficult match was expected and we prepared well for it. Our passing game only ticked in 10 minutes in and after a fine cross the impressive Luke Hartstonge found himself free to side volley home for 1-0. A horrific challenge on Luke Wilson saw Wainui reduced to 10 men and this allowed us to move the ball freely across the park. Clinical finishing from Sam and Fisem gave us a 3-0 halftime lead. We targeted playing out a good full 90 minutes and this we did with 2 more stunning goals to Fisem and Steve to wrap up a 5-0 win. The pleasing aspect of this victory was our preparation and professional approach to a potentially tricky fixture. Man of the Match- Luke Wilson Round 8 vs Wellington Olympic 3-1 win (MHagarty BWinyard ASheikh) A high flying Olympic team came to Hutt Park full of confidence after a superb start to their Premier season having gained promotion the previous year. We played some fine football in the first half with some neat build up play. Mike Hagarty side footed into an empty net after a superb move to give us a well deserved lead. Close chances to Sam and Fizz should’ve given us a greater lead but at the half we went in 1-0 up. Straight from our own kickoff Olympic pinched the ball and waltzed through to equalise 15 seconds into the second spell. 1-1. We settled down thereafter and got back into our rhythm and after Fisem was set free Brenton tapped home from Fisems pass for 2-1. Abass finished Olympic off with 3 minutes to play with a calm finish to round off a 3-1 victory and keep us in the title race. Man of the Match- Brenton Winyard Chatham Cup Round 1 vs Stokes Valley 7-0 win (SBlackburn 2 FAden 2 MHagarty AYates SGulley ) We welcomed Capital 5 team Stokes Valley to Hutt Park for our Round 1 Chatham Cup fixture. Alistair Yates and Finn Sorger made their 1st team debuts and Jack came in for Vinnie in goal. Our target was to be ruthless and professional in all areas today and our main goal was to not concede any goals. The match was over as a contest after 20 minutes when took a 3-0 lead with Mike Sam and Fisem all netting. Further goals to Sam and Fisem saw us take a 5-0 lead at the break. We made changes at halftime and grabbed 2 more gaols with Steve and Alistair scoring to complete the scoring for a final score of 7-0. Having good squad depth is key for any team challenging for a title and today showed we have players with talent and the drive to be regulars in the 1st team. Hopefully we can have a great Cup campaign in 2011. Man of the Match- Fisem Aden Round 7 vs Wellington United 3-3 draw (SGulley BWinyard SBlackburn) Our most important game of the season was played on a soggy Newtown Park against current league leaders Wellington United. We employed an attacking formation with 3 attackers and Blair playing as a stopper in midfield trying to cut off the supply line to Uniteds key striker. United started strongly and full of confidence and went a goal up after we failed to clear our lines in our box and a deflected shot beat Vinnie. Vinnie then kept us in the game pulling off key saves to keep us in the match and go in at halftime only 1-0 down. The second half started well for us and a lot of possession. We moved the ball around quickly and got in behind United. Against the run of play though we conceded our second goal after failing to communicate on a basic overlapping track the ball squirmed in after Vinnie had made a superb initial point blank save. 2-0 down with 25 to play we threw everything at United and only a minute later Steve latched onto a mix up and fired in a superb shot from the edge of the box for 2-1. With United tiring and our football flowing we fully dominated proceedings. Sam then found Brenton on the far post who headed home the equaliser for 2-2. United were in complete shock and soon after Fisem bisected their defence with a great pass for Sam to round their keeper and give us a 3-2 lead. We didn’t stop there though attacking United and trying to kill them off. Fisem hit the post with a curling shot and Steve had a looping header go agonisingly close. With time running out we conceded an equaliser when after a deflected cross the ball fell to their striker who fired in for 3-3. A draw in the end was a fair result as the match didn’t really deserve a loser. What was pleasing about this day was the character shown by the team to stand up and fight until the end and do it by playing our way the team passing way. Man of the match- Vinnie Godwin Round 6 vs Western Suburbs 4-0 win (SBlackburn JMason BWinyard SGulley) Western Suburbs came to Hutt Park on a sunny day with Hutt Park in very good condition despite a lot of rain during the week. We desperately needed 3 points to get our season back on track and our first half display was excellent. Sam Blackburn making his home debut opened the scoring after 10 minutes after a delightful Jamie cross. Soon after Jamie volleyed home after a great team build up with our passing game in full swing. James then set up Brenton to give us a 3-0 lead at halftime. Although our football in the second half didn’t reach any great heights we completed a 4-0 win when Steve dispatched a penalty after Sam was brought down. Man of the Match- Aleem Sheikh Chatham Cup Preliminary Round vs Naenae (S Gulley3 D Fussell) We travelled to Naenae Park for our prelim cup game against Naenae. The first half was played at a frantic pace with end to end attacks from both teams. Steve hit a bullet to give us the lead on 10 minutes and although further chances fell to Vath and Nash we only went in at 1-0 up. We wanted to control things alot more and maintain controlled dominance and after only 10 minutes of the second spell Steve had his second after a lovely dinked pass by Blair for 2-0. Soon after Damo had a shot blocked off the line by their defender with the use of an arm and a red card. Steve dispatched the pen for a 3-0 lead. Damo wasn’t to be outdone though and found himself on the scoresheet for his first goal of the season and 4-0. With 15 minutes to play we introduced 2 youngsters who have come through the grades at Stop Out. James Marsh and Alex McDonald junior had a taste of first team football having last season played JPL!!! The future looks bright. The team performance was excellent today and hopefully can be used as a catalyst for more triumphs this season. Man of the Match- Steve Gulley Round 4 vs Marist 1-1 draw (S Gulley) Kilbirnie Park was the venue for our round 4 fixture. Never an easy surface to play on we were always in for a difficult match. Playing into a stiff breeze we got the ball down and attacked Marist through the flanks where Vath constantly got in behind Marist leaving their fullback for dead. Clear chances were wasted though with Steve, Vath and James all having good opportunities to give us the edge. Mike had a shot cleared off the line and their goalkeeper was simply having a great day. The unwritten rule that when a team doesn’t take its opportunities it gets punished was ever so true when on the stroke of halftime we conceded to go 1-0 down. I sensed that the players were so disappointed to be down at the half having so many chances go begging. The 2nd half was a true disappointment with simply no rhythm to our play. Playing with no width we lacked penetration and got drawn into a battle. With time running out Nathan Canton was pushed forward as an extra attacker and was upended in the area with 3 minutes to play. Steve slotted from the spot to give us a late equaliser and a point. I truely felt that we dropped 2 points today as we should’ve wrapped up the match by halftime. The positive thing was that we refused to lose the match and played through to the end and were rewarded with a point which could prove valuable come the end of the season. Man of Match- Nathan Canton Round 3 vs Waterside Karori 2-0 win (S Gulley J Mason) Waterside Karori were our opponents on a wet miserable day for round 3 of the season. The officials moved the match over to our number 2 ground with such heavy rain present. Desperate for a win to kick-start our season we started exceptionally well with all the players fired up for the match. Only 5 minutes in and Fisem was upended by the keeper for a penalty and a dismissal to the keeper being the last man. Steve slotted in the pen for a much needed early advantage. 1-0. So keen to get more goals we attacked constantly and at times without patience which saw many moves frustrated and at halftime we went in with only the 1-0 lead. Patience and spreading the field to move the ball was the aim for the 2nd half and that is what we did. Ball possession was excellent and when Steve found Jamie from a free-kick we had our 2-0 goal buffer and game over. The rain was torrential and at times the puddles were simply stopping us from adding to our tally. Our front 3 were a constant threat all game especially James Houpt who has been terrific in working his way into the starting line-up for the 1st team. The 2-0 score was a fair reflection on the match and a much needed victory. I was extremely pleased with the desire shown by all players to get the win and to do it by continuing to play quality football. Man of Match- Blair Easthope Round 2 vs Miramar 0-1 loss Our second match of the season was against a very experienced Miramar Rangers team on another fabulous day at Dave Farrington Park. Alejandro (Alex) came in for Damon who was suspended while Luke H replaced the injured Luke W at the back. We started very slowly and simply couldn’t put our stamp on the game in the first 10 minutes. We fell behind after we allowed another cross into our danger area and found ourselves 0-1 down after 15 miutes. Good chances fell to Mike and Fisem in the first half but we went into the half a goal down. We stressed the need to get players into danger areas and the second half play was superb at times. Camped in the Miramar half we searched for the equaliser which was so elusive. Steve tested their keeper with and good right foot shot and Jamie came close with an overlapping run only to be foiled by the keeper. All our pressure resulted in nothing at the end as Miramar held out and we suffered yet again. Fulltime 0-1 loss. Our defensive structure was alot better today as was our shape. With so much possession and good chances it was disappointing to once again not get anything out of the game. Man of Match- Luke Hartstonge Round 1 vs Upper Hutt 2-3 loss (B Winyard S Gulley) The new season began with a very difficult match against defending champions Upper Hutt City on a beautiful day at Hutt Park. Blair Easthope, Aleem Sheikh and Vath Young all made their Stop Out debuts. We started nervously and were all at sea in the first 10 minutes. After this uncertain period our football started to flow and our team passing moves put Upper Hutt under huge pressure. This pressure saw Fisem and Jamie come close to giving us a deserved lead with close range headers. Vath then robbed a defender and with only the keeper to beat blazed the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Only a minute later we were punished after some wayward defending. A cross was allowed to come into our box and some poor marking saw Upper Hutt take the lead with a magical volley with 10 minutes to play in the half. Only 5 minutes we later conceded again after failing to clear in our box the ball popped up for their striker to lace home. Halftime 0-2. At halftime we re-grouped and didn’t press the panic button. The players responded by taking the game to Upper Hutt and were rewarded with a goal midway through the half to Brenton which was a teasing cross that went in at the far post. Steve then found the back of the net with a superb free-kick with 20 minutes to play to get back to 2-2. Well on top at this point we kept pushing forward and attacking Upper Hutt searching for the winner. The game totally changed when Damon retaliated in a meelee and was sent off with 15 minutes to play. With 8 minutes to play Upper Hutt grabbed another goal after some poor marking from a free-kick. Fulltime 2-3 loss. The real disappointment was losing all 3 points by self destructing. The pleasing aspect was the comeback and level of football that deserved something out of the game. Man of Match- Michael Hagarty

Match Reports 2010
- Stop Out Sports Club
- Champs Premier League Round 8 (catch-up) August 21st, 2010 Island Bay vs Stop Out 1-0 loss Our final match of the season was our catch-up fixture against Island Bay at Wakefield Park. A victory would see us finish the league in 2nd spot so the boys were all aware of the importance of the match and the goal infront of them. Right from the outset everybody at the ground could see that the pitch was close to unplayable. We could string 3 passes together and this really hampered us. The first half was one of few chances but both Jake and Fifii wasted clear cut opportunities so 0-0 at halftime. The second half didn’t get much better as a spectacle and unfortunately for us after a goalmouth scramble Island Bay scored with 5 minutes to play and held out for a 1-0 victory. Man of Match- Jason Tipping A disappointing end to what has been a hugely successful season for the team and the club. Hopefully the disappointment of not winning the title this year will serve as a huge incentive going into 2011. Champs Premier League Round 18, August 14th, 2010 Stop Out vs Miramar Rangers 2-3 loss (S Gulley, J Theron) With 2 games to play we looked to close out the season on a high. With this being our final match at home we looked to maintain our unbeaten record at Hutt Park. A bright opening half hour of positive passing football saw us take a deserved lead when Steve placed home with his right foot. Having dominated early without more goals Miramar gradually got back into the match and right on the stroke of halftime equalised after we failed to clear a routine corner. The second spell again started brightly and after some lovely passing Jake fired home a fine finish for another lead. 2-1. We then lost Luke W through a head clash and while we looked to re-group Miramar hit us on the counter to equalise for 2-2. The last 15 minutes was one way traffic with the Miramar goal being constantly peppered but without any result. The sucker punch came after Tony dropped a cross when under slight pressure and the ball bouncing across the line off the Miramar strikers back! 2-3 fulltime. Man of Match- Jason Tipping With news filtering through that Island Bay had earlier beaten Waterside Karori 1-0 left the boys gutted with our first loss of the season at home. We later found out that Upper Hutt were confirmed as League winners with a come from behind 2-1 win against Marist. Champs Premier League Round 17, July 31st, 2010 Stop Out vs Waterside Karori 2-2 draw (B Winyard, S Gulley (pen) The all important top of the table clash with Waterside Karori was a must win match for us as we close in on our title charge. A damp pitch after a wet week saw a different Hutt Park than in previous weeks. We started the game very well and got the ball down and tried to get the ball moving which was pleasing to see. Early opportunities fell to Brenton who unfortunately couldn’t find the target on this occasion. As in so many matches this season we were punished for our profligacy and Wharfies took the lead after 20 minutes when their striker surprisingly found himself in on goal after another ricochet on the edge of our box. 1-0 halftime. With our season on the line we came out all guns blazing after the break and Brenton found the net after 15 seconds of the second half! We played with a lot more structure and started moving Karori around which was what was required but just as we got on top Wharfies regained the lead from a set piece which wasn’t cleared properly. We then found our best passage of the match and got at Wharfies and after Jamie was upended in the box Steve cooly slotted the pen for 2-2. We then had another great chance to get the winner but Brenton just couldn’t quite turn the ball in from Jakes low cross. 2-2 final score. Our unbeaten home record remains but in order to win the title we now need results to go our way. Man of Match- Regan Steele Champs Premier League Round 16, July 24th, 2010 Kapiti Coast United vs Stop Out 4-0 win (M Fifii 2, S Gulley (pen), F Aden) Another difficult away fixture against a team in the relegation zone. Kapiti are always difficult opponents at Weka Park but today simply wasn’t going to be one of those days. A beautiful day and a superb playing field was just the tonic we needed for this match and we got into our passing rhythm straight away. After a lovely team move Jamie clipped through to Steve who delicately lobbed in to Fifii to volley home a left foot strike that saw us take the lead in the 5th minute. 10 minutes later we were awarded a pen when Jake was upended BUT amazingly the keeper saved Steves pen! This didn’t faze the boys and we maintained control of the match and in the last minute of the half took a greater advantage when Fifii scrambled home the 2nd after a corner wasn’t cleared. The second spell was more of the same. Controlled passing football and another pen. Brenton was the player brought down this time. Steve showed great character and stepped up again and dispatched his kick with ease to give us a 3-0 lead 15 into the second half. We grabbed a fourth when Fisum slotted under the advancing keeper to grab his 1st for us this season. So a 4-0 win away from home was made so much sweeter after we had heard we had gone 3 points clear at the top of the table. Man of the Match- Michael Fifii Champs Premier League Round 15, July 17th, 2010 Stop Out vs Western Suburbs 5-2 win (M Fifii 2, B Winyard, A Sheikh, S Gulley) It was great to be back at home for what we knew would be a strong Western Suburbs team at this stage of the season. In the relegation zone Wests are always a difficult team to play and this once again proved to be the case. It was best to forget the start we made in this match as we found ourselves down 2-0 after 15 minutes. Poor marking and individual errors allowed a fired up Wests to take control of the match. We suddenly awoke and played some superb football and found a goal back when Fifii tapped home after some superb build-up work. 1-2 down. We then found an equaliser when Fifii latched onto a through pass to beat the keeper to the ball and get us level at 2-2. A third quickly followed when some fine bulid up play saw Brenton tap home to get our noses infront at 3-2 halftime. The score really should have been greater but both Fifii and Brenton missed 1 on 1 chances they both know they should’ve taken. We targeted closing the game out by scoring early and hopefully trying to get our goal difference up. This didn’t materialise and it was only 15 minutes before the end we put the game beyond Wests when Abass found a great shot to beat their keeper with a super strike from outside the box. This rubbed off on the other players and Steve rounded off a fine day for us with a similar strike to make the final score 5-2. 3 points was the key today as we keep chipping away at the top of the table. Man of match- Luke Wilson Champs Premier League Round 14, July 10th, 2010 Marist vs Stop Out 3-1 win (M Fifii, J Theron, B Winyard) Kilbirnie Park was the venue for a difficult away fixture and if ever there was a potential banana skin match this was definitely one of those. Extremely poor conditions with a heavy pitch, uncut grass, and no width were always going to be huge factors for us to overcome but this was addressed and we had prepared well for them during the week by training in a near blizzard!!! Our first half performance in this match was brilliant. We looked to get at marist right form the get go and early chances fell to Fisem, Justin and Fifii but we just didn’t see the ball cross the line and had to call upon Tony to pull off a great save to keep the scores level at the break. What was excellent was to see us composed at halftime and not get frustrated and wait for the opportunities to arrive. We thought we had scored when Justin burst through to slot home only for the ref to consult his assistant with the ball on the centre circle to disallow the goal. This almost served as a catalyst and we were determined to push on now. Only a minute had passed when Steve put in a super free-kick to find Fifii spring up to head home a lovely goal for 1-0. Marist were playing very direct and bombing things into our box and after a long ball from a free-kick we failed to mark up properly and they found an equaliser for 1-1 with 15 mins to play. This was a huge test of character with our season on the line but these players responded admirably. Marist were only on level terms for about 2 minutes when Fifii with some excellent wing play beat 2 players and crossed magically for Jake to power home a fine header for 2-1. We then hit them on the counter and Justin slipped Brenton in to finish well to give us a 3-1 win. The character shown today was awesome. Man of Match- Michael Fifii With 5 games to play we sit top equal and can only hope to win this league if we win every match from here on in. We are determined to give it our best shot and leave nothing to waste. We look forward to your continued support in helping us get across that line. Champs Premier League Round 13, July 3rd, 2010 Stop Out vs Island Bay 8-0 win (J Gulley, J Theron, S Gulley 4 (2 pens), R Steele, M Fifii) Having let ourselves down the previous week we did alot of soul searching and re-igniting the flame to find the hunger for success and what a turn around we got in the space of seven days. Back on our home field and a very good week of training behind us we took on Island Bay who had won their previous 5 matches. Right from the first whistle we were up for it. Winning every challenge and showing maximum commitment we proved that we could fight for the shirt and play our brand of football. The midfield 3 of Steve, Damo and Justin dominating and the front 3 of Jake, Brenton and Fifii were always causing major problems and this brought about a sublime first half performance that saw us with a 6-0 halftime lead!!! Goals to Justin with a neat header, Jake a clinical finish, Stevie a collectors item backheader and a thunderbolt rocket, with 2 well taken pens saw me scratching my eyes in disbelief!!! We talked about continuing to mount the pressure and not concede in the second half and the team completed a comprehensive victory after Regan hit a screamer outside the box and Fifii delightfully lobbed the keeper with a beautiful finish for 8-0!!! This was Stop Outs biggest win since 2004 and a victory that has boosted our goal difference that may be crucial come the end of the season. Man of Match- Steve Gulley Champs Premier League Round 12, June 26th, 2010 Upper Hutt vs Stop Out 2-0 loss Harcourt Park was the venue and a place where we have already been this season in the Chatham Cup. Damp, boggy conditions greeted us in this all important match which we had prepared well for. With Steve suspended, Abass away and Brenton injured, we dipped into our big squad and this allowed players to step up and prove themselves. We started this game well and attacking Upper Hutt with a 3 prong attack. Both Fifii and Fisem got at them early in very trying conditions and allowed us to create a few half chances. Jake narrowly headed wide after doing well to meet a far post cross. We then fell back into the trap of playing in wrong areas and this allowed Upper Hutt to pressure us. After failing to deal well with the ball in our box a soft shot found its way into our net through so many bodies and 1-0 down after 30 minutes. We re-grouped at the half and tried to play the ball in the opposition half and with more width and penetration. No clear cut chances came though and midway through the second spell we were once again punished on the counter attack when Fifii failed to deliver a cross and dispossessed. 2-0 down. It was clearly a day where nothing went right for us and the harder we tried the worse things became. We only created 1 clear chance when jake put in a lovely teasing cross which beat all 3 of our players in the box. 2-0 final score. Man of Match- Scott Henderson Champs Premier League Round 11, June 19th, 2010 Stop Out vs Kapiti 5-2 win (S Gulley 2 (1pen) J Theron 2 M Fifii) Another home fixture against top scoring Kapiti was never going to be easy and with other top 4 teams not involved this week it allowed us to put pressure on the leaders by getting a victory. Our start was superb in this match and immediately we got the ball moving and stretching our opponents. 15 minutes in and with Fifii being alert was too quick for the defender and upended for a penalty which Steve confidently converted for 1-0. With both fullbacks pushing forward regularly we were well on top and soon after Steve added a 2nd after some great wing play and overlapping from Scott. 2-0 after 30 mins was a fair reflection on the game. Kapiti were always a threat aerially and after a long throw in and slack back post marking saw us gift another soft goal. 2-1. We regrouped and kept attacking and regained our 2 goal lead after Jake slammed home a wonderful strike after Fifii slipped him in on a tight angle. 3-1 halftime. The second half was much of the same with alot of keepball and midway through the half we added a 4th when Fifii rounded the keeper to place home into an empty net. 4-1. Our 5th came when Fisem found a glorius long pass for Jake to lob the keeper for 5-1. We slacked off in the last 15 minutes of this game and didn’t play out the full 90 minutes properly which has been of concern all season. We conceded again in the 92nd minute after some poor marking from a free-kick for a final score of 5-2. Man of Match- Ethan Morta Champs Premier League Round 10, June 12th, 2010 Stop Out vs Naenae 3-1 win (J Theron 2 M Fifii) We returned home to the Park we love so much looking to get our season back on track after a run of away fixtures. After a strong opening period of play from Naenae we quickly got into our passing game and moving the ball all over the pitch. With no goal to show and some desperate scrambling Naenae then pounced on some slack marking to take the lead. This woke us up and after 30 minutes we found an equaliser after another fine build up saw Fifii beat his marker and coolly setup Jake for the easiest of tap ins. 1-1 halftime. The call was for more patience and intelligent runs in attacking areas. 5 minutes into the second spell we took the lead after an interchange of passes in midfield say Fifii free to setup Jake for another 1 on 1 which Jake slotted home to steady our nerves. Naenae never gave up and continued to fight and scrap for every ball but with 20 to play we grabbed a third goal which put the result beyond them after Fifii produced a lovely turn with his back to goal to slot home from an acute angle and 3-1. The winning margin could well have been greater after chances to Steve, Regan and Fisem late on but what was most important today was the win. I was extremely pleased with our level of play and the heart shown to remain unbeaten at home this season. Man of the Match- Jake Theron and Michael Fifii At the halfway stage of the season we sit in a very good position to mount a real title challenge. Winning home matches is of huge importance if this is to happen so we look forward to your continued support and seeing as much red and gold around the scene at home games helps this happen. Champs Premier League Round 9, June 12th, 2010 Stop Out vs Naenae 3-1 win (J Theron 2 M Fifii) We returned home to the Park we love so much looking to get our season back on track after a run of away fixtures. Champs Premier League Round 8, June 5th, 2010 Wellington United vs Stop Out 5-4 loss (J Theron, B Winyard 2, S Gulley) We travelled to Newtown Park on a great day for football. No wind or rain to speak of having had so much of it in previous weeks. Going into this match our preparation was fantastic and we were ready for the challenge against the current Premier leaders. The match didn’t start so well though when after a minute we found ourselves down 1-0. Ethan got caught out with a ball in behind and after a cross rebounded off the post their shot went in off Jamie for an unfortunate own goal. The next 25 minutes from us were superb. We got the ball down and moved them all over the park with some great passing football. From a midfield free-kick Steve found the dangerous Jake who headed over their advancing keeper for 1-1 after 10 minutes. Our best passing move of the day resulted in our second goal also. After some patient build up play all 3 central midfielders combined and Justin slipped in Brenton for a clinical left footed finish and a 2-1 lead. With 10 minutes to play we conceded a needless free-kick and after some sloppy marking conceded an equaliser to a great volley for 2-2 at halftime. A super b half of football was played and we looked to keep attacking them in the second half to get the win. Only 5 minutes into the second half we mysteriously found ourselves down when a penalty was given after it was their player who initially handled inside our area. Penalty converted and 3-2 down. The character displayed by the players was excellent. We continued to push forward and attack them. Steve then nailed a bullet of a free-kick into an empty net having spotted their keeper behind their wall. 3-3 with 25 minutes to play. On top and pushing forward we took the lead after Brenton headed in at the far post from Steve’s free-kick. 4-3 up with 20 minutes to play. Wellington Utd bombed forward looking to exert pressure but we snuffed out any real danger and played on the counter with our pace up top. 2 minutes into injury time and with the ball in the opposition half the linesman flagged for an off the ball incident in our box and a penalty was given after Tony had retaliated to their striker! The resulting penalty was almost saved and 4-4 in the 92nd minute. Miraculously the ref found more time to play. A long ball forward wasn’t dealt with properly and their strikers shot rebounded off the inside of the post into the path of their striker to slam home the winner. 5-4 final score. Man of Match- Brenton Winyard This was a massive bitter pill to swallow having come so close to victory. Although we ultimately cost ourselves the match through our lack of discipline lady luck certainly wasn’t on our side on this day. An own goal, 2 penalties against didn’t show the true reflection of this match. Champs Premier League Round 7, May 22, 2010 Waterside Karori vs Stop Out 3-1 loss (J Theron) It was back to league football after last week’s cup round with a tough fixture against league favourites Waterside Karori. Kick off was delayed 15 minutes with markings required to the pitch. The delay to the game saw us get off to a very poor start. 5 minutes in and 1-0 down after some indecisive defending and loose marking. We got into the match well and controlled possession and our front 3 looked to get in behind the big Karori defence. Jake came close after the keeper exited his box but could only drag his shot wide of the target. The pleasing aspect was that we were moving the ball quickly again and our decision making was alot better than in previous matches. 1-0 down at halftime. We targeted more ball security and moving Karori around after halftime and thats exactly what we got. 2 minutes into the half and we were back on level terms after a superb move involving Fifii, Jamie and Justin whos lovely pass saw Jake finish clinically into an empty net. This 15 minute spell was the time we should’ve put Karori away but didn’t. Chances quickly fell to Brenton who shot just went wide from a tight angle and Jake through 1 on 1 with only the keeper to beat. Karori then found a great volley to break our dominance and take a 2-1 lead against the run of play. Although we pressed and pressed to get an equaliser it just wasn’t meant to be our day when with 3 minutes to play Karori found a 3rd goal to kill off the match. The difference in this match was the taking of opportunities. We missed ours while Karori took theirs. The difference in footballing styles was contrasting. Karori direct and aerial. Stop Out calculated and methodical. This result will hopefully spur us on to better things in the coming weeks and will hopefully give us the resolve to get back to winning ways. We are still in the title race which will go down to the wire this season. Man of Match- Jamie Mason Chatham Cup First Round, May 15th, 2010 Upper Hutt vs Stop Out 1-0 loss Harcourt Park was the venue for a clash of the 2 current leaders in the Premier League in the First Round of the Chatham Cup. Big Al came in to the team for his first match in the top team this season and Hamish joined Fifii in attack. The match was very different from the tough encounter at Hutt Park earlier in the season. Both teams tried playing some good football which suited us. We had spells in the first half where we dominated and after a lovely Abass deft pass Fifii dragged his shot wide of the target. 0-0 halftime. The second half was very different. Possession and corner after corner was with us. Our passing game was stretching Upper Hutt but unfortunately no clear cut chances. Our best passing move saw Abass burst through from midfield and after trying to scoop the keeper has his shot saved. With the game headed towards extra time their striker managed to wriggle his way between our defenders and having ‘pinballed’ his way on the edge of our box unleashed a cracking strike in the 90th minute to win the game. As disappointed we were after the match, we still see the big picture. There were many good performances again which is superb for the team moving forward. Man of Match- Scott Henderson Champs Premier League Round 6, May 9th, 2010 Western Suburbs vs Stop Out 0-3 win (B Winyard, S Gulley (pen), J Gulley) Endeavour Park was the venue for a Sunday fixture against Western Suburbs for our 6th match of the season. We had prepared as though we were playing Wests first team which was the best way to go into the match. We welcomed Jamie Mason in for his debut in Stop Out colours on a bright beautiful day for football. The game started at a rapid pace and of high quality. Wests using their quota of 3 re-graded players played some very good football and caused us some problems at times but our patience and structure allowed us to stay in control of things. With 5 minutes to play in the first half a superb Abass through ball saw Brenton expertly chip their keeper to give us a 1-0 halftime lead. The second half was simply superb from our team. Quick passing football opened up Wests time and time again and after Abass was upended in the box, Steve tucked away the penalty for 2-0 early in the half. Our midfield was in full control of the game by now and with Brenton and Fifii tireless upfront we stretched Wests at ease. Another fantastic passing move saw Brenton play in Justin who clinically finished after a well timed run into the box for 3-0. This result allowed us to return to the top of the table having played a third of the seasons matches. Man of the Match- Michael Fifii Fisum Aden was used as a second half substitute and this was Fisems 50th appearance for the Stop Out First Team. Congrats Fizz. Champs Premier League Round 5, May 1st, 2010 Stop Out vs Marist 1-0 win (J Theron) We welcomed newly promoted Marist to Hutt Park for our 5th league match of the season. We prepared for a difficult match as Marist showed good form leading up to the match. Fifii was joined in attack by Jake Theron who was making his debut for the club. Matchday rain meant for a slippery surface and our start wasn’t the sharpest in this match. But with our lively front pairing we caused immediate problems and chances fell to both players early on. Midway through the first spell we found some dominance and after a lovely clipped ball from Ethan, Jake composed himself to delightfully chip the oncoming keeper for 1-0. We started the second half searching for the second goal to kill off the game but after only 10 minutes we found ourselves down to 10 men after Jake was mysteriously given 2 yellow cards in the 1 incident. We quickly re-grouped and called upon all of our mental and physical capabilities to hold on to the result which was testament to our spirit. Another crucial 3 points allowed us to jump top equal on the table after 5 rounds. Man of the Match- Luke Wilson Chatham Cup Qualifying Round, April 25th, 2010 Stop Out vs Kapiti Coast United 1-1 (4-2 pens) (B Winyard) The Chatham Cup qualifying round allowed us the opportunity to give squad players a chance to play first team football. We started the match really well and got into our passing game midway through the half. 15 mins before halftime Stevie G found Brenton with a diagonal pass and his lob header beat the keeper. We should’ve really gone into halftime 2 or 3 goals up but some great keeping and average finishing meant we were only 1-0 up. The second spell began with more superb passing but unfortunately for us no end product. Justin and Brenton twice went close to securing the tie. Kapiti then seized their opportunity and after a freekick found a header that tied up the scores. 1-1 fulltime. The 30 minutes of extra-time were played out with more dominance from us and after some great team football both Brenton and Phil will only know how they didn’t manage to score! So to penalties we went and the players stepped up. Steve, Abass, Johnny and Mike H confidently dispatched their penalties while Jack saved twice from the penalty spot to ensure our progress. This was a real team effort and we deserved to progress. Strong performances from Hamish upfront, Johnny, Abass, Mike in midfield, Luke and Ethan at the back were all instrumental today. Man of the Match- Jack Kemp Champs Premier League Round 4, April 17th, 2010 Stop Out vs Upper Hutt 1-1 draw (S Gulley pen) Our fourth match of the season and already a crucial match. Previously unbeaten and top of the table Upper Hutt visited Hutt Park flying high and full of confidence. A win would’ve seen us go top of the table. We finally welcomed Michael Fifii into our team for his debut in Stop Out colours. We talked about starting the match well as in all our previous matches this season we were the first to concede. The first half saw us play some terrific football in a derby type atmosphere with no quarter given. As well as some excellent football we stood firm and matched Upper Hutt in the physical areas. Although we showed the greater share of possession and midfield dominance we just didn’t show the patience required to break down a stern Upper Hutt defence. 0-0 halftime. The second half started much like the first for us with some slick passing and lots of possession. Our superior fitness levels were creating more space and with Fifiis pace we always looked dangerous. With 15 minutes to play Fifii latched onto a defensive lapse and nipped in to be brought down for a penalty which Stevie G confidently dispatched. 1-0. Upper Hutt were getting frustrated and were soon reduced to ten men after a second bookable offence. We looked to play out the last 10 minutes in control and by keeping the ball. Amazingly luck had turned on us and after a long ball over the top and a momentary lapse in marking we were caught square and Upper Hutt equalised in the 90th minute to make the final score 1-1. This was a bitter pill to swallow as we were by far the better team on the day. Man of the match- Justin Gulley After four rounds we sit second equal on the table with 2 wins a draw and a loss. After major disruptions to the squad with players in the NZFC and Dallas Cup we sit in a superb position to Champs Premier League Round 3, April 10th, 2010 Naenae vs Stop Out 2-3 win (B Winyard, J Gulley, D Fussell) A short trip to Naenae Park was the venue for our third match of the year. Having lost to Naenae in pre-season we knew we had to be up for a tough battle which is always the case in any local derby. We welcomed back our Dallas Cup Feds players who helped strengthen our squad. Our start to this match was nothing short of dreadful. Naenae took the match to us and found themselves 2-0 up after 15 minutes. Poor marking and poor team defending were more to blame than any individual error. Abbas who also returned to the squad this week, replaced the injured Madden and after a goalmouth scramble Brenton curled a delightful left foot shot into the top corner of the net to reduce the deficit to 2-1. We re-grouped at halftime and looked to get back to playing our way. Only 2 minutes into the second half we got the equaliser when Justin claimed to have scrambled in the final touch to Damon’s downward header from an Abbas corner. We were now moving the ball quickly and stretching Naenae at ease. From another corner we found our 3rd goal. Damon rose well above anyone in the area to score a superb goal and give us a 3-2 lead. Possession and smart defending saw us come away with a well deserved 3-2 win in the end. This was a potential ‘banana skin’ match but the greater desire for victory proved too much in the end and for that I’m extremely pleased. Man of Match- Damon Fussell Champs Premier League Round 2, April 5th, 2010 Stop Out vs Wellington Utd 3-1 win (SGulley 2 (1 pen) H Patrick) We welcomed Wellington United to Hutt Park for our second match of the season on Easter Monday. With a first round loss we knew that a result from this match was important to get back on track. Brenton returned to the starting line up from work commitments and we employed an attacking formation with 3 strikers. We started very tentatively and almost still hung over from the Miramar game. It took a magnificent diving save from Tony from a rocket shot which was bound for the top corner to wake us up. An unlucky bounce for Luke W which was more ball to hand saw the ref give them a penalty in only the 10th minute and 1-0 down. To be fair we really rode our luck for the rest of the half and were relieved to go in at only 1-0 down. The second spell was completely a different story however. Right from the outset we manipulated possession and pegged them back. Stevie G made the breakthrough with a cheeky near post free kick for 1-1 which got us rolling. Our passing game was back to full swing and the midfield in complete domination. Madden then elegantly scooped their central defender to set Hamish clear who calmly rounded the keeper to slot home our second. 2-1 up with 15 minutes to play. Although Wellington pushed to get something out of the match we kept possession and played out a perfect 15 minutes and another wall pass saw Hamish clear 1 on 1 only to be bought down by the keeper for a penalty. Stevie G dispatched the pen to complete a 3-1 victory. Our superior fitness levels were a huge factor over the Easter weekend and the players realised this as the effort shown was just reward for all the work done in pre-season. Man of Match- Steven Gulley Champs Premier League Round 1, April 3rd, 2010 Miramar vs Stop Out 3-0 loss Our first match of the season saw us visit Miramar at Dave Farrington Park. Always a difficult opponent and with their first team having played a day earlier this match was going to be no different. We started the game very positively into a stiff breeze by keeping possession and absorbing any real Miramar attack. This quickly changed after we gifted Miramar the first goal. Tony failed to clear a routine back pass and only managed to find their striker who accepted the present. 1-0 halftime. Early into the second half we conceded another goal. A far post volley saw Miramar take a 2-0 lead which proved too much for us to overturn. Miramar controlled the match from this point and although we fought hard right through to the final whistle we couldn’t break Miramar down. A third goal 2 minutes from time after we had pushed players forward trying to get something out of the match completed a miserable first up 3-0 loss. What was pleasing was the maximum effort of the player’s right to the end. Nesho Malivuk, Hamish Patrick, Scott Henderson, Derek Waldegrave, Troy Peek, Nathan Canton and Phil Cleworth all made their first team debuts for the club. Man of Match- Michael Madden

Central League reports
- Stop Out Sports Club
- Today we welcome you to the Raceway for what is a six point match. If we win we give ourselves the first boost of the season and close up within a point of our visitors today Palmerston North Marist. To lose isn’t worth thinking about because it’s not going to happen. One of the old clichés in sport is you make your own luck. Watching the lads over the last few weeks highlights the fact that we’re not far off. The football we play, some of the skills that come out during the game and the structured style of football that the boys are trying to produce are comparable to teams playing at the top of the table. Sometimes it’s the rub of the green or a ref’s interpretation at a key moment that can make the difference. Other times it’s about pulling together and fighting in the trenches. This week, I suspect the latter might come to the fore. Who’s more hungry for the points. Who’s going to win that 40 – 60 challenge and make a difference… Stop Out! This week we’ve had fresh blood down at training and competition for places is hotting up. That’s great for all concerned as it gives coaches options to work with and offers players a message that they need to focus to hold their positions in the starting 11. Sport is about competition and that starts in training. Those that work hard and compete mid week, will be the ones that see the benefits on the field at the weekend.Taranaki gave us a lesson in that a couple of weeks ago. They weren’t pretty, or skilful, but they battled like warriors. It took them 25 games to earn their first win in this league and they were elated. What it demonstrated was their passion… their bottle. A week later they were able to repeat the performance. Whilst I wasn’t happy that they beat us, I was pleased for them because it meant so much for them. It shows what can be done when a team sticks together and fights for each other. Alter Alterius Onera Portate. (Anyone who can’t remember what it means, ask Jim McCreadie after the match) Today after the match, I want every player who walks out of the trenches to feel they’ve earned their DB for the day. Let’s have a team that are men of the match. Lets celebrate our first winning performance and start getting the reward that deserves the hard work that being put down during the week Play hard, play smart C’mon you Stop Outs. Stop Out FC v Wests After a win in the Chatham Cup against Eastbourne. I thought it would be a good kick start to our season. I was expecting the confidence of the players to be high. A tough game lay ahead with Wests as our next opponents. To win the game, all the players needed to at their best. We started off playing well with good spells of possession & were rewarded with an early goal from Fiseum. From there on we went from strength to strength. Playing at a good tempo & keeping the ball. There were a few tackles from both sides that the referee was quick to produce yellow cards. Then 20 minutes had past & Steve Gulley made a rash challenge on the edge of the box. The referee did not even hesitate & produced a second yellow card. We were down to ten men but still 1-0 up. We kept trying to play but giving the ball away in the wrong areas would only harm us in the long run. Wests piled on the pressure & with a lot of ugly football being played. They scored 2 goals. Not lying down we kept trying to play our style & just before half time the ball was played to John who shot at goal. The keeper parried but only in the path of Fiseum who scored his second of the day. We had few chances through out the game & should have been more clinical in front of goal. 2-2 at half time we were not out of this game by far. I still believed we could win. Wests carried on from where they left off. With a lot of possession & movement. We coped & still kept trying to play. As the game wore on, concentration levels dropped, as well as the quality of our decisions. Tiredness set in & we conceded three more goals. Overall, it was in parts a good performance. We must be better & much more ruthless when it comes to finishing teams off. Simon Eastbourne FC v Stop Out FC The Chatham Cup first round game would give me a great opportunity to use the younger player‘s in the squad. But because of our run in the league, we needed a win. I thought this game would be a great start to our season with a win. The pitch was one of the worst I have seen in New Zealand & reminded me of the Sunday leagues pitches back home in the UK. The amount of potential hazards around the pitch was also a concern. Taking this into account, Eastbourne must have thought, they would have a great chance of beating us. The game started as I would have expected, with a pace about it. As the game went on we started to take charge. We maintained a lot of possession with a number of missed opportunities and Eastbourne were still in the game. Silly mistakes crept into our game. I honestly thought the only thing Eastbourne is going to get out of this game is what we give them. The score at half time was 0 – 0. After talking to the players. Making sure they increase the tempo, move the ball quickly & are more patient when playing in the top third. We would get a goal. The second half was just like the first. With a lot of possession & again numerous missed opportunities in key areas. Eastbourne had a couple of chances but had no quality to finish them. The game was coming to a close. The thought of extra time & penalties was looming. I still felt we could get something out of the game as Eastbourne were fatiguing. There was 5 minutes to go when we had kept the ball for a period. Played round the middle of the pitch. The ball was played to Garry who attack space in front of him, who in turn played the ball into Tyronne’s path. Who made a great over lapping run. Moved into the penalty area, to drive the ball into the bottom corner. Great finish! The most important thing we must learn very quickly is when we have opportunities to punish teams we must put them away. Simon Welcome to Raceway today for our home game against Wests. As defending champions, by their own standards, Wests have had an indifferent start to the season with only 2 wins so far. This just reflects how strong the league is this season and the challenge ahead for us to survive. I was able to watch the first half of our Chatham Cup match against Eastbourne last week. In terms of atmosphere and environment it was not going to be an easy task. On a pitch that is the smallest size allowable, with tree’s, drains and rubbish bins within a metre of the sidelines and the surface something similar to the weeds of Raceway decades ago, Eastbourne defended with 10 men in the hope of nicking a goal if the opportunity arose. Full credit to Eastbourne. Tactically, I’d have done exactly the same and they certainly played their part in a classic underdog cup tie. I’m proud of the way we responded. Whilst we looked like a team under pressure, we still tried to play a style of controlled football in difficult circumstances. A one nil result may not sound great against a Capital 3 side, but it doesn’t reflect the challenges on the day to play decent footy and our perseverance. With a little more confidence, the shots we’re currently snatching at, will end up slotted in the back of the goal. Keep working hard lads. Whilst talking about results and performance, this week I thought I’d highlight the successes of some of our junior players. Luke Hartstonge, O Thani and Justin Gulley are obviously foremost with their appearances in the senior team this season. We’ve also had several boys from the same team playing in the 2nds which bodes well for this years U19 squad and future season. Additional to these lads, Michael Hagarty and Shayne Ayrton have been selected in the National Squad Age Group Programme. Sadly Shayne has suffered some serious injuries in recent months and is resting up this year for an eagerly awaited return to football in 2009. The 5-day camp in April was the first of three camps over the next year Michael will attend. These camps are a forerunner to selection for the U17 NZ team and an overseas tour in 2009. Good luck Mikey as we keenly watch your progress. Similarly further down the age ranks, young Lachy Waugh was pictured this week in the Hutt News for his selection in the Federation team travelling to represent New Zealand in the Oceania Festival of Football Tournament. Should the Federation team win the tournament then they will progress to France in September as the Oceania representatives in a 40 nation event. Also selected in the training squad as a non-travelling reserve was James Marsh. On the opposite side of the gender balance, Tamsin Brown has been attending the Federation Academy Winter sessions after being scouted by NZ Football at the last National Age Group Tournament. Having watched Tamsin with our Women’s team this year, she is a player of fantastic talent and work rate who has a huge future ahead of her. Whilst there are many more kids who are not far behind this batch of future stars, I think it’s important we acknowledge the success of these fine young players in a country known for its tall poppy syndrome. Well done and keep up the good work. C’mon you Stop Outs. Last weeks game was against Napier, again another good team. So I was looking for a good performance & the win. With each game we have improved. This week I was expecting much more from the players. We started well & kept possession through the first half. Our possession paid off by scoring two of the best goals of the game. By playing our game style, we worked the ball around the middle third. Space opened up for Gary to hit a low driven shot. The goal keeper couldn’t hold on to it & Fiseum finished off the rebound. The first half progressed with more chances & more possession. Periods through the game Napier were creeping back into it. Our luck held out & we scored a second. Again, good possession & linkage play from the players. The final ball was played to Fiseum, who rounded the goal keeper to pass the ball into an empty net. We were two goals up & playing well. Napier were slowly having more possession & applying more pressure. We conceded a sloppy free kick & from it we conceded a goal. Taking a lot of positives from the first half, we were 2 – 1 up. I thought we have a good chance of winning the game. But only half the job was done. We were playing against the wind & Napier took advantage of it. Playing long balls over the top & putting the defence under pressure straight away. We played too much in our own half. When start playing too much in your own half. You are going to concede goals. We struggled to keep possession for the rest of the half. Napier kept pushing forward & with individual errors it was not long until Napier scored. We conceded 3 goals in 15 minutes. Our lack of ability to defend & concentrate at vital times cost us the game. The final score was 4 – 2 to Napier. We must be better over the whole game. Simon Hello and welcome to Raceway for our 3rd home game in a row. Today we welcome Olympic to our patch, Olympic have had a fine start to the season, only dropping their first points of the season last week to Miramar.Whilst our form has contrasted our visitors this week, the results are improving week on week. Last week we played well for the first half, going into the break ahead. Unfortunately we switched off in the second period to again come away with nothing to show for our endeavour. Some people may look at our results this year and think we’re following a similar pattern to last year. Whilst this may appear so on the table, there are significant differences in regard to depth, development and culture. It takes time to build an environment where internal growth drives the success of a team. It took a lot of hard work to get the team back into Central League football and in recent years the focus has been survival. During those years our structure was based on a season to season focus. There was no continuity. We cycled through our coaching staff annually and also spent a significant amount of money to ensure we stayed in the league. On the basis of survival, we succeeded… But it wasn’t much fun for anyone…. the players, the committee, and importantly the supporters. The approach made it hard to retain quality players, and attract new ones. As an organisation we realised that if we took the same approach this year we could expect more of the same. Over the last fortnight I’ve highlighted some of the activities and ideas within the team that shows we’re looking to build for the long term. Our Director of Football, Simon is building programs that give our kids the best chance of progressing through the club when they’re ready and looking at this year’s roster, he has already identified some talent that will flourish in the years to come. The thing about building from the bottom up is that it takes time for the foundations to set and success to flourish…. we only need to look at how long it took for the Raceway development to start showing activity to remember that lesson. This year is significantly different from others, because we are looking beyond just this season and believe we’re doing the right things. When a champion side has a few poor results, they don’t move away from what made them champions in the first place. They don’t gamble on drastic changes where they’re not sure of the outcome. We have belief in our structures, we have belief in our Director and we have belief in our players… All we need is to believe in ourselves and the results will come. Let’s get in behind the lads and give them that belief. C’mon you Stop Outs Welcome to the Raceway for this weeks game against Napier City Rovers. Last week saw the lads play fairly well, but unfortunately the final result did not reflect how close the game actually was. After every match there is time for reflection and performance aspects that are identified for improvement. The mark of a good side is that they only take from each match what will help them improve for the next. Anything else is excess to requirement and should be discarded. Napier arrive having started the season with 2 draws from their first 2 outings and I’m sure they’re as hungry for the 3 points as we are. All in all, a recipe for another great tussle. Last Tuesday I returned to work with the reflection of what might have been. Those of you who read last weeks programme may recall that I was riding in a race around Marlborough and the Sounds, but I’m glad what might have been, didn’t occur.During the race, some poor sod called Vern, skidded his bike whilst going round the corner at 40kmph. As he slid along the road loosing copious amounts of skin, he happened to force me towards a traffic island at about the same speed. By sheer millimetres I was able to avoid both him and the island, otherwise I may have ended up in a much worse state. It dawned on me this week, that there a very few who after their sporting activities over weekends do not have to return to work the next Monday. For those who suffer injuries, the cost is counted not only in money, but also time and various degrees of pain. Rehabilitation can take from days to weeks or even months depending on severity and that doesn’t take into account stress from work or other pressures. Most that play football play for the love of the sport, the competition, the camaraderie. At Stop Out we have 3 Masters teams where ideas of sporting grandeur and excellence have been replaced with arthritic knees and aching backs. The thing is that in our minds, some of us still think we’re capable of performing like 20 year olds rather than the over 35’s we are. Whilst the desire may be there, realisation that we are no longer bullet proof and going back to work is only a day away takes priority over sliding in hard for that pointless challenge. Similarly the bloke you’re sliding into also needs to return to work on Monday, and for most we’re playing in social grades. Something to remember the next time you’re about to do something dumb… I’m sure my wife will be quoting these same words back to me tonight after my match. One of the new relationships that Stop Out has formed this year is a connection with TeamPhysio, who opened over the summer in Queens Drive. TeamPhysio have been working with our top 2 teams emphasising the importance of pre and post match preparation, fitness and conditioning, injury prevention and rehabilitation. Armand who is a physio at TeamPhysio has been giving up his own time on Tuesday nights for treatment and evaluation of some of the players to see whether they will be available for the next match. There are a number of other ideas that we will look to develop when opportunities arise, but goodwill can only go so far. If you’re in need of a physio, please give them a call on 939 3300 to make an appointment and let them know you’re from Stop Out so they are able to see what business they obtain from the link with our wonderful club. Here’s hoping that you don’t have any need to call them. C’mon you Stop Outs Our second game of the season is against Petone, another local derby. After last weeks disappointing result, we were looking to bounce back with a positive result. After a hard week on the training ground, I was looking forward to a good performance. We started brightly & playing positive football. Petone were doing pretty much the same. As the game progressed, I thought we had a good chance of getting something out of this game. Petone were pressing forward & we kept giving set pieces away. Finally, Petone scored their first goal from a corner. We kept trying to play but fear was creeping into the players. A second goal was conceded from our attacking corner. Petone broke out quickly, going forward with pace & we were 2 – 0 down at half time. The game was far from over & after the half time team talk. The players were up for the second half of the game. With new impedes, we started to play a little better. Then out of the blue we conceded a sloppy goal. From then on the game went from bad to worse. Another goal was conceded from poor play & trying to play in areas, where we should not be playing. It is a harsh lesson we need to learn very quickly. Steve Gulley has joined Stop Out. Steve Gulley has a rich pedigree in football as a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Team in 2003–04 and a member of the NewZealand Under 20’s squad in 2004. Steve has also been part of the Team Wellington structure since 2004. Steve is looking forward to the challenges ahead at Stop Out and he's committed to a long term future at the club. At only 22, Steve is integral to our push for success! Stop Out is excited to attract a player of such high calibre and Steve is the first of some key signings as we strengthen our playing squad and talent pool.
