    • Church Update – 04/05/18
      • Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? This Sunday we will consider where we find ourselves – how do we measure up with what we want? – and how can we prepare ourselves for what is just ahead of us? See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

    • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth
      • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth April 10, 2019 Partners Porirua was proud to host the official launch of the Youth Driver Licence Scheme announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. The scheme, funded by the NZTA Community Road Safety Fund and the Ministry of Social Development, beginning 1 June 2019, will enable young people on benefits or in care to access free driving lessons and tests.   “A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. It’s a vital tool and opens doors to education and jobs.,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. This is exciting news for Partners Porirua as a Youth Service provider, running its own Drive 4 Life programme since 2007.  Partners Porirua also facilitate a Community Driver Mentor Programme enabling disadvantaged youth to practise their driving skills with fully licensed adult driving mentors. “The announcement means Partners Porirua can assist more of our most vulnerable young people to get their driver licence, and increase their employment prospects and independence,” said Executive Director Michelle Robinson. Partners Porirua Workforce Development Manager, Jacqui Edwards with Jacinda Ardern and Partners Porirua Executive Director, Michelle Robinson.  Read more about this announcement. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/111922049/prime-minister-announces-free-driving-lessons-and-tests-for-young-people-on-benefits-or-in-care Hineora Mike, a former Youth Service client and teen Mum, tells Maori television what getting her full drivers licence has meant for her. https://www.maoritelevision.com/news/politics/govt-fund-free-licence-scheme-youth-on-benefits

    • A Very Fine Affair
      • Today I had the pleasure of triumphantly depositing $1700 in the Oxfam Coffee Break bank account! This money was raised at the formal dinner, A Fine Affair, by the amazing group of timebankers, volunteers, sponsors and guests, who worked, donated and consumed delicious fairtrade food and drink. The day started bright and early for our star chef, Tania Sawicki Mead, along with a dedicated team of kitchen hands including Nolan Hodgeson, Karly Christ, Kate Wilson and Renee Rushton. A crisp selection of fresh food donated by Commonsense Organics and The Organic Connection was unpacked and the preparation began. The Newtown Community Centre Theatre was transformed into a beautiful, fine-dining restaurant setting lit with fairy lights and candles and decorated with fair-trade coffee sacks.

    • Outclassed
      • Don Logan FC provided Rovers a lesson in football this afternoon at the Shed of Dreams as they overpowered Rovers 9 - 4 after leading narrowly at half time. "We were a bit disjointed going in to the game with John and George out, Matty not expected to turn up and Pete injured" said Hall "but it was no excuse as we just didn't fire against a team that did".

Of course, dear reader, it would be outrageous to suggest that you have no other social engagements lined up for the Saturday of a long weekend, but if you can forgive me once again for the short notice, may I suggest that you nip up to the Enjoy gallery on Cuba St (upstairs near Scopa).

      • Let's have a little competition - the NZ Retirement Commissioner, Diana Crossan, says she's wanted a change of name for the Commission for several years, but no-one has coined a suitable name. • Good Manners - Just mind your step….
      • Following the councils decision to ignore everyones advice except from those that agreed with them they have lost no time in commencing the change process in Manners Mall. New pedestrian calming measures have been introduced into the centre of the mall which also perform more than adequately as holding pens for paving contractors looking to gather up pavers from beneath the pedestrians feet and redistribute them to a place more deserving.

      • A story in the Capital Times has been intriguing us here at Eye of the Fish world headquarters, and I’m surprised no one else has picked it up. The Cap Times (with a nicely renovated website - good work guys!) interviews a “local businessman” who is unhappy with the Council spending over a million bucks on ripping apart the old Cobblestone Park outside the big red building of Arch and Design.

    • Stalla
      • Well, I was about to post something up on the tall tower proposal for the corner of Manners St, when this little number popped its head above the parapet, and it got me thinking. It is the latest proposal for Wellington – and no point debating it, because it has already been granted Resource Consent, without having to ask the public, despite being over 30% higher than the “permitted height”.

    • Human Godwits: on John Ward Knox
      • I’m no bird watcher but I’ve had my eyes on John Ward Knox’s ducks. I first saw them online. Gosh, they are so bloody beautiful. How I coveted those wooden ducks, like decoys, but so much more. Ward Knox’s elegant sensibility is always, at least for me, a little bit elegiac, almost unbearably poignant. • Result: Twilight Series - event 1
      • The conditions weren’t too bad for running, considering what was forecast, although there was a fresh southerly which kept things cool and slowed the outward progress a little, but aided on the homeward journey. There were 83 runners and walkers who turned up for the 15th race in Waterfront 5km Series, no doubt some being put off by the forecast and not being prepared for the better than expected conditions.
