    • Fun and Fabulour Run
      • Kilbirnie School is holding a Fabulous Fun Run on Thursday 26th May at 1pm to encourage kids to be healthy and have fun! This event is co-ordinated with the cross country season so the kids are currently practising their running and keeping fit! Dress up is a HUGE part of this event! There will be awards for best costumes, so if you want to take part as your favourite superhero or book character, get creative and WOW the crowds! There will be ice blocks at the end after the event for the kids to re-hydrate and we encourage any families to come down and support the kids and join in the fun (please wear masks). or pick up a form at the school office.       • Want a good reason to attend the Save the Basin Public Meeting at St Joseph’s Church, cnr Brougham and Paterson Sts, Mt Victoria, from 4-5pm tomorrow, Saturday 3 August? Well, if our original invitation wasn’t enough, now you have a new reason: The Government has just announced that the resource consent hearing will be before an EPA Board of Inquiry hearing rather than before the Environment Court, as Wellington City Council had recommended. You can read the Minister’s announcement, and find out the names of those she has appointed to the Board of Inquiry, on Wellington Scoop. We’d rather the Minister had taken a few more months – or years – to make her decision, but now we know exactly what we’re up against. We were already going to tell you about NZTA’s flawed and sloppy flyover proposal, and what it means for you. Now we can also tell you with more confidence what the submission process will be, and how you can tell the Board, the Government, opposition political parties and the world at large that we do not want this ugly, outdated and unnecessary concrete monstrosity within a bull’s roar of the historic Basin Reserve.

This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success  Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled.  We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display. You can add the appropriate calendar to your own via the Google button at the bottom left.         Measles Outbreak — Advice to schools As you are likely aware, there is a large and ongoing outbreak of measles in Christchurch, with 26 cases as at 14 March. Auckland and Dunedin now also have measles cases. While there are currently no reported cases in the greater Wellington region, people will move around NZ during the school holiday period of 13 – 28 April, which includes Easter (19 April –22 April), and ANZAC Day (25 April), and it is likely measles will spread. Focus on Climate Change At the time of writing, a large number of our students are in town for the Climate Change Strike, part of a global movement of youth protest.  In the build up to this, Wellington High’s Molly Doyle in Year 13, took part in a panel with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, the Green Party’s James Shaw, and student leaders from other schools. You can read more about the event here.             World Vision Youth Conference Stop Press: While many of our students have been out at the Strike4Climate this morning, four students have been representing WHS at the World Vision Youth Conference. Abishkar Palma, Emily Brooke, Liberty McIntyre-Reet, and Jack Davies have been learning and sharing their ideas and vision of how they can be change makers in our community.           Talking Books with Jacinda Ardern Johanna Christ, Alex Buyck, Otis Brown and Em Flux attended a fundraiser for the Katherine Mansfield House and Garden on the evening of Wednesday 13 March to hear Jacinda Ardern talk about her love of books. The Prime Minister shared advice for teenagers, “Know yourself. Know when you are feeling fragile and get off social media. Don’t live life on a screen.” She also talked about the importance of reading saying, “In order to give children the gift of reading, we need to give parents and caregivers the gift of time.” The students came away feeling very lucky to have had the opportunity to attend the event.       Farewell to Chrissy Laing We reluctantly said goodbye to Chrissy Laing on Thursday 14 March after four and a half years of outstanding service as our Gateway coordinator. Chrissy brought enormous positive energy to this important role and she will be greatly missed. Chrissy is embarking on a new journey much closer to home and we wish her well in her new role.       French Club trip to view a French Film Festival  On Thursday members of the French film club, joined with other French students in Wellington to view the view Au Bout des Doigts.       Tongariro Crossing On Monday the GEO223 and ESS223 classes left for the long bus ride up to Tongariro. We journeyed up to the mountains and on Tuesday did the long 19.4km Tongariro Crossing. The 22 students and 3 staff made it over in just under 8 hours, some more adventurous students choosing to run the final 3km downhill. Everyone did a great job an had a great time, and the warm hot pools straight afterward were welcomed by us all. The weather was fantastic – a number of us were sporting pink noses by the afternoon. Thank you to Kerry Parker and Kyle West who accompanied and made it possible to do the Crossing for the first time in many years. Drama Camp Last week Year 13 Drama went on camp to Riversdale in the Wairarapa. The purpose of the camp was to have an extended rehearsal period for two upcoming performance assessments. While they were away students worked on their acting technique for an assessment which finished yesterday, and started drafting self-devised character-based solos for presentation in week 11 (9-11 April).       JustSpeak lunchtime lecture The lunchtime lecture on Friday 8 March was delivered by Tania Sawiki Mead.  Tania is the Director of JustSpeak: a movement of young people who are speaking up and speaking out about criminal justice, aspiring for a thriving Aotearoa. JustSpeak develops  youth-led tools, resources, spaces and support to facilitate public conversation on criminal justice informed by evidence and experience. Thank you to the Library for hosting another fascinating talk, and to Kathryn Hutchinson  for organizing the lecture and visit.       Achievements Talented footballer and former WHS student featured in Sunday Star Times The Sunday Star Times on 10 March featured the story of former WHS student, Athman Othman. Athman is remembered by many of his teachers for his sporting talent and we were glad to read of his success on the field playing for Tasman United. Read the full article here. NZYPT – New Zealand Young Physicists’ Tournament take silver On the 9th March, two teams of WHS physicists competed in the Wellington regional heat of the 14th New Zealand Young Physicists’ Tournament (NZYPT). Held at Victoria University, the teams took part in science fights defending their research into seven pre-determined problems, and challenging that of their opponents. The team of Millie Rea, Sophie Mance and Khalid Adam are to be congratulated for finishing second. They will head to Auckland next weekend to take part in the national finals.       Sport Futsal We have had another busy week sport wise.  On Wednesday 13 March we had a Junior Boys and Senior Boys team compete in the College Sport Wellington Futsal Competition held at the ASB Sport Centre in Kilbirnie.  The teams had a great day with some very close results. Big thanks goes to Mr Junca for coaching the boys. Junior vs St Patrick Town, 6-3 lost vs Hutt International, 4-2 lost (draw until last 3 minutes!) vs Hutt Valley High, 8-3 win vs Scots College, 4 all draw (excellent game!!!) vs Tawa College, 6-1 win Senior: vs Wellington College, 7 nil lost vs Aotea College, 2 all draw vs Hutt International, 7-3 lost vs St Patrick Town, 3-2 win vs Onslow College, 3 nil lost Regional Athletics On Thursday 14 March a team of six from Wellington High School competed in the College Sport Wellington Regional Athletics meet at Newtown Park. Competing were: Fynn Hutson Senior Boys High Jump Thomas Woodward Senior Boys 100m and 200m Liberty McIntyre-Reet Senior Girls 800m Tiopira Mulholland Intermediate Boys High Jump Ari Koed-Chang Intermediate Boys Long Jump Frankie Coup Junior Girls Javelin All athletes participated extremely well.  Thomas reached the final of Senior Boys 100m and Frankie  won the Junior Girls Javelin with a throw of 24.97m (which beats our school record). Netball Reminder: Junior and Senior Netball Trials take place on Saturday 16 March (tomorrow) and Saturday 23 March here at school in the Tindall Gym. Juniors 9.00-11.30am Seniors 1.00-3.30pm Players must bring the correct shoes and a drink bottle.  If you cannot make both trial dates please let Ms McIntyre (Sports Office) know. Football Trials for all Junior Boys wishing to compete in the Junior Boys Football team take place on Tuesday 19 March from 3.30-5.00pm. Players must bring their football boots and correct clothing for the trials.  Also on Tuesday 19th March, trials for Senior students (Year 11-13) wanting to compete in the 2nd and 3rd XI Football teams, should meet at Wakefield Park, Adelaide Road, Berhampore, from 3.45-5.00pm. They will need their football boots and correct clothing for the trials.  Upcoming Sporting Events Summer Tournament week is quickly approaching!  From 25-31 March, we have the following teams away competing in the NZ Secondary Schools National Sporting Events.       • After overwhelmingly positive feedback and a heck of a good time, in 2023, Te Aro Eats: Uniting Kai Communities is back for its second year at CubaDupa! Te Aro Eats is a collaborative and interactive dining experience where you are invited to connect with fellow diners, volunteer in the meal mahi, and take time to enjoy the delicious kai that has been created to show what is possible when we mahi together. Brought to life by the volunteers and staff at Seeds to Feeds, Everybody Eats, The Free Store, Wellington Timebank, Kaibosh Food Rescue, and with the support of Kaicycle, BGI (Wellington Boys and Girls Institute), Neighbours Aotearoa, Commonsense Organics and Wellington City Council. Saturday: 12 pm - 2 pm | 4 pm - 6 pm Sunday: 12 pm - 2 pm Each session open to all This meal is designed to showcase how our community-focused organisations operate and welcome volunteers. This will be inclusive (easily catering to vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerances, and allergies), and created to share the story of our kai and our people.       • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth April 10, 2019 Partners Porirua was proud to host the official launch of the Youth Driver Licence Scheme announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. The scheme, funded by the NZTA Community Road Safety Fund and the Ministry of Social Development, beginning 1 June 2019, will enable young people on benefits or in care to access free driving lessons and tests.   “A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. It’s a vital tool and opens doors to education and jobs.,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. This is exciting news for Partners Porirua as a Youth Service provider, running its own Drive 4 Life programme since 2007.  Partners Porirua also facilitate a Community Driver Mentor Programme enabling disadvantaged youth to practise their driving skills with fully licensed adult driving mentors. “The announcement means Partners Porirua can assist more of our most vulnerable young people to get their driver licence, and increase their employment prospects and independence,” said Executive Director Michelle Robinson. As her label tells it, “Her ability to deliver raw emotions through her vivid stories of loss and hope, strife and triumph is unmatched”. New album The Boat Outside Your Window arrives next month, with new singles Tsunami and Naming Names suggesting this record is set to turn heads and destroy worlds. Zedek has never shied away from mining some seriously desperate emotional terrain - Pitchfork While these days he calls Berlin home, Ned Collette is both an Aussie lad and card-carrying Kiwi. Ned’s early years were spent playing experimental music in the underground venues of Wellington and Melbourne, before he headed off into the wild yonder to seek fame and fortune, or at least some amazing adventures. Important Information Measles update You will have seen the update with regards to the cases of measles at WHS from Regional Public Health earlier in the week. The response of families of those students potentially affected has been superb as has been the support of the Regional Public Health team. Hopefully this remains the only case of measles in the region but we encourage all parents, caregivers and whānau to remain vigilant to the symptoms and to contact their GP in case of concern. Wallace Street roadworks:  update from Wellington Water You will have noticed a lot of work going on in the area, and may well have read the news item in the Dominion Post earlier this week about the reservoir pipeline project. We are in touch with the contractors undertaking the work for Wellington Water and they have told us that the planned diversion of traffic off the stretch of Wallace Street from John Street to Hargreaves Street (opposite the main entrance to Massey University) will not take place until December. From December all traffic, including buses, will be diverted along Wright Street while new water mains are laid along Wallace Street.  A new pedestrian crossing will be installed on Wright Street and a new bus stop created there.  There will be no impact on the bus stops that our students use. Safe pedestrian access will be maintained along Wallace Street while it is closed to traffic, and traffic management staff will be on site during working hours. In the meantime, roadworks are underway on Wallace Street from 9.00am-4.00pm on weekdays. We recommend allowing extra time for travel as there can be delays during this period. Find what you need to know, contact subject teachers, and get encouragement from other students. Rotary Scholarships available The Rotary Club of Wellington is seeking applicants for scholarships. Applications can be submitted by individuals to assist with the cost of tertiary education, vocational training of the development of life-skills. About 12 grants are available to students of any age who come from the Greater Wellington area and who can demonstrate financial need. The amount awarded varies but is typically in the range of $3000 to $5000. Education Minister Chris Hipkins launches School Leavers’ Toolkit at WHS On Wednesday 25 September, the Education Minister Chris Hipkins chose Wellington High School as the venue for the launch of a great new resource for students and teachers: the School Leavers’ Toolkit. After a pōwhiri in Taraika, the Minister spoke to Yr12/13 students at a special assembly, presented certificates to students who participated in the toolkit’s development and then convened a Q&A session with some of the students involved. Around 30 WHS students contributed their ideas, views and opinions about the School Leavers’ Toolkit website during 3 sessions in 2019. Their comments were always honest and direct and gave the developers insight and welcome guidance, helping them shape the website to make it more accessible and meaningful for students, their families and teachers. Packed lunchtime seminar on Prison Reform Week 10 saw the Year 13 Sociology students presenting a range of events focussed on the need for prison reform in New Zealand. On Monday a panel of MPs discussed their party views on voting rights for prisoners in New Zealand. This discussion was facilitated by student who worked with Just Speak to raise awareness of the issue. On Tuesday the role of art therapy and rehabilitation within prisons was discussed, from a Quaker perspective. On Thursday 5 students spoke to their submission at the select committee for electoral reform at Parliament. An impressive piece of civic engagement from our students.   This was picked up in the media. You can read the full article in the NZ Herald here:  https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12271201   WOW breakfast at the Australian High Commission On the final morning of term, four Fashion students, Principal Dominic Killalea and Fashion teacher Kylie Merrick,  had the opportunity to go the Australian High Commission and hear Australian designers speak about Wearable Art in a panel discussion. Great thoughtful design conversation and delicious yellow themed food (The World of Wearable arts theme colour for 2019) was enjoyed by all. WOW is on at the TSB arena until 13 October. Among the crew are WHS students Tyler Gold and Ant Vache, so watch out for them if you go to the show.     Garden update As you can see from these photos, under the care of our Horticulture students, the garden is flourishing in the spring.              Achievements CREST success Gryffon Hester and Neo Silcock gained Highly Commended (joint second place) and a Silver Crest award in the NZIFST and Royal Societies Food Innovation Challenge. They worked for three terms with Tahi Spiralina as their client and mentors Ben Suitherland and Sally Ronaldson from Food Safety Australia NZ to develop a spiralina pasta suitable for vegans and to showcase  the versatility of spiralina. The judging event required that they present their product, their report, academic poster and be interviewed by two sets of industry based food technologists. We are really proud of their efforts. Ka rawe!     NZ Chinese essay competition winner Congratulations to year 13 Theo van Toor who has won the first place in the secondary senior category of the 13th New Zealand Chinese Essay competition. Coordinated by the Confucius Institute in Auckland, the competition is one of a number of events annually that help link New Zealand and China through education and culture.   Sports Skateboarding  Congratulations to Gala Baumfield and Hunter Lander Smith. Both competed at the College Sport Wellington Skateboarding Championships on Wednesday 11 September. Gala gained 1st place in the Senior Girls and Hunter got 1st in the Senior Boys and won Best Trick. Well done to you both.        Sports Prizegiving  Our annual WHS Sports Prizegiving is on Tuesday 22 October at 11am in the Riley Centre.  All students who have played sport for the school are expected to be present. Parents are also welcome to attend, so please include this in your diary, and we look forward to seeing you all. Women in Trades seminar  This was a great opportunity for anyone interested to come and chat, meet, ask questions from a fantastic group of young women who have chosen careers in the trades. Our visitors were very keen to share their stories:  A first year building apprentice just out of school for 10 months after finishing school at the end of Year 12 An apprentice studying for her Level 4 Certificate to become a fully qualified Electrician. With her boss away, she is in charge of the team organising jobs and managing staff A Plumbing and Gasfitting and Drainlaying apprentice of three years who has just bought her first home with her partner. She is hoping to set up her own “all girl” business in the future. A Navy service woman of 13 years in the Hospitality trade as a Steward currently working as an Armed Forces recruiter. We hope to repeat this seminar opportunity next year.

    • 18/8 College Sport activities will not proceed this weekend
      • Dear Newlands College Sports Community Below is a statement from College Sport today (18/8) about their decision regarding sporting activities for this weekend and the future: Dear students, staff, family members, partners and supporters of College Sport Wellington, Following yesterday’s Government announcement and Wellington’s elevation to Alert Level 4, the team at College Sport Wellington have been working hard to consider various scenarios and contingencies for the weeks ahead.  Clearly this is a very fluid situation and we will need to take one step at a time.  In addition to the Government’s ongoing updates, we naturally need to factor in the upcoming Winter Tournament Week and School Sport New Zealand’s decisions around that.  We believe that at the end of this initial three-day lockdown (due to expire Friday night) we will have a clearer picture on both fronts. At the same time, we very much appreciate the tight turnaround if even in the best case scenario, Wellington’s Alert Level is reduced for the weekend.  Even at Alert Level Two, schools and council facilities will need to have a number of measures in place with no preparation given the current Alert Level Four lockdown.  On that basis, and in line with a number of club sports, we have made the decision that no College Sport Wellington competitions will proceed this weekend – regardless of the Alert Level setting. Whether the games originally scheduled between today and Sunday are treated as ‘postponed’ or ‘cancelled’ will be determined following Friday’s announcements.  At that point we hope that the shape of the next few weeks will become clearer.  Our next stakeholder update will then follow in due course. We thank you for your ongoing support of secondary school sport and the wider COVID-19 measures.

There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training.  Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start.       • George Gershwin:   An American in Paris Leonard Bernstein: Three Meditations from “Mass” Karlo Margetic:        Music for Wind, Brass and Percussion Duke Ellington:        Night Creature   Andrew Joyce, cello Marc Taddei, music director   Sunday, 26 May 4pm Wellington Town Hall Pre-concert talk 3pm   "Night creatures, unlike stars, do not come out at night - they come on, each thinking that before the night is out he or she will be the star”. – Duke Ellington The first half of the twentieth century saw America on the ascendant, and its music reflected this confident new society with bold new styles that strutted and swung.  For their first subscription concert, Night Creature, the orchestra presents works by Gershwin, Ellington and Bernstein that embrace the exciting new rhythms and harmonies of America. Orchestra Wellington music director Marc Taddei says he is fascinated by the way great classical composers are inspired by the popular music of their day. Most familiar perhaps is Gershwin’s An American in Paris. It’s 1928, the close of the Gilded Age, and for Americans, anything seems possible. Gershwin visits Paris to experience more of a culture he enjoyed. If there are some bluesy moments reflecting Gershwin’s longing for home, overall this piece is a sparkling tribute from a great cosmopolitan to the bustling metropolis he admired. Leonard Bernstein’s Mass was a child of its time too: 1971 and anything goes! These short meditations for solo cello and orchestra are extracted from a much larger Mass whose vast theatrical conception embraced everything from rock and gospel to Lutheran chorales and atonal expressionism. The full Mass, requiring three choirs, rock and military bands, has been vilified in some quarters and hailed as a masterpiece in others. But there is no question about the power and beauty of these short Meditations drawn from it. The Orchestra is proud to welcome NZSO Principal Cello Andrew Joyce as soloist. Joyce is a recent addition to the New Zealand’s concert stages, following on from a busy career as an orchestral, solo and chamber music player on the London scene. Duke Ellington’s Night Creature, from 1955, takes a bold new direction in form and orchestration. It is a kind of three-movement concerto grosso, with a core group comprised of a saxophone quartet and jazz rhythm section forming a ‘concertino’ within the orchestra. Our own New Zealand voice is explored by Orchestra Wellington’s Emerging Composer in Residence, Karlo Margetic, in his Music for Wind, Brass and Percussion.

Farewell to Andrew Savage, Deputy Principal On Tuesday, we farewelled Andrew Savage who has been one of our Deputy Principals since 2012. Andrew leaves WHS to take up a post at the Teaching Council and their gain is most certainly WHS’s loss. Many staff took the opportunity to speak at Andrew’s farewell, recognising his many qualities and numerous contributions to WHS and enjoying musical contributions from Fritz Wollner and Andrew himself.     Safer Internet Day #SID2019 – 5 February 2019 This week marked international Safer Internet Day 2019 so we thought we would share some new resources from Netsafe. If no appeals are received by 25 September 2020 on the resource consent decision, GWRC will issue the applicant the consent certificates.Recommendation on the Notice of Requirement to UHCC The Committee have made a recommendation that the Notice of Requirement be approved under section 171 of the Act. This extends from the Pinehaven Reserve to the inlet where the Pinehaven Stream is piped to the Hulls Creek.The purpose of the works is to reduce flood risk from the Pinehaven Stream to the surrounding area. The works will increase the capacity of the stream and its tributaries to a 1 in 25 year return period, reduce risk of injury or harm from flood flows, integrate overland flow paths into the stormwater network, and enable efficient and effective construction and ongoing maintenance of the structures.The proposal includes changes to the Pinehaven Stream channel and crossing structures in the lower reaches to provide for a 25-year channel capacity. At years 11 to 13 the event will be for competitors only. Other students in years 11 to 13 will have a Home Learning Day and I encourage students to make good use of their time on that day if they are not going to attend the athletics. Teachers will talk to senior students about their expectations for this day. We encourage year 11 to 13 students to come along and support their peers and the junior students. Senior students who have committed to running a stall on the day are also expected to attend. Students need to make their way to Newtown Park and have their name marked on the roll by 8.45am.  The athletics programme will start at 8.45am with the 1500 metres, these athletes will need to be at the track at 8.30am to warm-up and get ready, the day should conclude by 3.30pm. Entries for all events are taken on the day and students are encouraged to actively participate and to support their whānau group by wearing their colours, Riley – red, Kelly – yellow, Howell – green, Royal – blue. We look forward to seeing who our top athletes will be as they may go onto represent WHS at regional athletics championships. Please note that although bikes, skateboards and scooters might be used as transport to arrive at the park, they must not be ridden at all inside Newtown Park. Shoes and appropriate attire must be worn whilst competing. Students should bring water, wear a hat and have sunscreen. Food should also be brought for the day and students may like to bring cash to purchase food from the stalls run by senior students.     What’s happening? Aroha Day – 14 February For many 14 February immediately conjures up images of hearts and flowers, but at WHS it is a special day of engagement and opportunity. Yesterday was WHS’s first Aroha Day. The hall filled with stalls from over 40 different activities and sports and students from all year groups took the opportunity to find out about the activities on offer and sign up. For new students it was an inviting opportunity to find out about the life of the school. As one Year 9 reported, the event gave him the confidence to join clubs that he might otherwise have not felt confident enough to approach. For older students it was the chance to showcase their passion for the activities they are already engaged in. Groups put together inviting displays to tell others about their activities. Students enjoyed the outreach and opportunity to talk with and encourage their peers to sign up and get involved. As a result over 160 students have signed up for Relay for Life and the High School musical group is expecting more than 80 to its first meeting. Many other activities and sports are experiencing record levels of interest. Overall, Aroha Day was a day of collaboration, outreach and engagement and is a day that will certainly become an annual highlight in WHS’s calendar. Year 9 & 10 Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) Year 9 and 10 students are taking four Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) during Weeks 4—5 (beginning 18 February) in their core classes. Letters have been sent home. All Year 9 and 10 students must ensure they have a laptop with them as the tests are completed online. You can view the schedules for the tests here.   For more information on PATs, go to: Understanding PATs – Community and Parents (NZCER) Papa Taiao Camp 2019 Students taking Papa Taiao at Level 3 explore sustainability, environmental dynamics, conservation and related issues. In such a course, hands on experience is essential. This week the Papa Taiaio students visited Matiu / Somes Island, snorkelling off the coast and investigating the island’s ecology.       Ecology Trip July 2020 WHS wish to take a small number of students who will be at least 16 years old in 2020 to the small island of Dominica to learn about ecology techniques both on land and in the sea.  Follow this link to read more.  Please note the rock canyoning is no longer available. February’s Library lunchtime lecture: Genetics  Jim Inglis, Senior Business Manager Genetics, Pamu, is giving the February Library Lunchtime Lecture. Taking place in the Library on Thursday 21February from 1.30-2.15, Jim will focus on Genetics and who is doing what in NZ’s production systems. This is a golden opportunity for AgHort and Biology students to discover the technologies in use. Importantly they will get an insight onto the biotechnological solutions that are not in use and will be able to understand the reasons why.     School Leavers Toolkit: WHS works with the MoE to review design concepts Over a dozen WHS senior students attended a user-testing workshop on Monday morning run by the MOE (Ministry of Education) to review the forthcoming ‘School Leavers’ Toolkit’ design concepts. They heard from a diverse group of our students with a wide range of perspectives, different aspirations and varied learning needs. The toolkit represents a Government commitment to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities needed to transition successfully into employment, training or further education. The web application designs our students tested and critiqued included iconography for resources to support financial literacy, an understanding of how our political systems work (civics), and developing key workplace skills. It will be aimed at students in years 11 – 13 and beyond. Students were asked to give input on decisions about design, accessibility and function. They gave the project team honest, in-depth feedback on the design ideas for the web space. MOE staff, impressed with the engagement of the WHS students – some of whom took part in last year’s Hackathon – invited students to share their ideas further and assist the MOE with user-testing as they develop a web space to connect students to key information needed to successfully transition out of school. The MOE were delighted with our students’  enthusiasm and insight, and look forward to working with them in the coming year.     Base One garden  A big thank you to Vicki and the Base One students for taking the time to set up and maintain the new herb gardens outside the foods rooms. We are now using some of these gorgeous herbs in our dishes.       Notes from the Music Department Choir started practising Thursday at lunchtime. Newcomers are welcome. Come to the main music room at 1.20pm (bring your lunch with you). If you are play a stringed instrument, our string ensemble needs you! Jazz band will start week commencing 18 February. If you are interested in joining the Junior Jazz Band, this will start later on in March. To talk to Mr Wollner about any of these, you will find him in the main music room after school each day. Achievements Scholarship Success! Scholarship is the highest level of achievement possible at NCEA Level 3 NCEA and awards $500 to each successful candidate. We congratulate Gwen Palmer-Steeds on achieving three Scholarships, including an Outstanding result in English. Congratulations also go to to Sophie Dickinson-Smith, Amelia Mance, Sophie Mance, Christopher Matheson and Luke Roeven who have all achieved highly across a range of subjects. In addition, Aroha Millar, Year 13 Sculpture student from 2018, has received a $5000 scholarship to attend the course Toioho ki Apiti — Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts College & University in Palmerston North. We are very proud of her achievements and wish her all the very best for her future studies in art. Sports Update Our Sports programme has been very busy so far this year!  Thank you to all who helped get students to their games and practices.  You can see the Sports Draw on our website. From the drop down arrow select your sport.  Some of the mainstream sports, Netball, Hockey, and Rugby are not included here as these sporting bodies prepare their own draws. Floorball: Thailand Floorball World Cup Qualifier. Kristina Sundin has just returned from Thailand where she and her sister, Marie Sundin (a former WHS student) represented New Zealand, competing in the Asia World Cup Qualifier. At 14 years old, Kristina was the youngest player selected for the team. She really proved that she deserved her spot in the team during the games. In her role as a defender made many fantastic saves. While the NZ women team didn’t qualify, the sisters learned much and had a great experience. They are already starting to prepare themselves for team selection for U19 Women’s World Cup. This will be held in Sweden 2020. New Zealand women’s head coach, Sven Sundin, is also the coach of Wellington High Floorball team. He invites players, old and new, to join him in the old gym on Monday evenings at 5pm, starting 18 February 2019. You can also email Sven for more information.

      • Connor Lusty bowling in the Boys Premier Youth Cricket competition What does the lockdown mean for sporting students? How has it affected them and what are they doing to stay fit and motivated? Following on from our catch-up with two Queen Margaret College rower Mollie Nicol and Wellington Girls’ College runner Emma Douglass HERE, we check in with two local male athletes to see what they are doing to keep fit and motivated. St Pat’s Silverstream sprint champion Oliver Krijnen and Onslow College First XI cricketer Connor Lusty. We put a few questions to each below. College Sport Wellington: Please tell us what you were preparing for before the Lockdown? Ollie: Before the whole lockdown happened I was preparing for the second day of the Wellington Junior Champs and looking ahead to the North Island Champs in Hamilton which would have been the last big event to close the season off. Connor: When the lockdown started our cricket team had just finished our Saturday competition games for the term, finishing with 3 wins and 4 losses to qualify for the 6-team competition for term 4 for the first time since 2016. We had been starting to prepare for our Summer tournament Week, which for cricket is the Hunt Trophy three-day Twenty20 tournament. I’m also a part of our Onslow College 1st XV Rugby team and I was about to start attending pre-season training the week that the lockdown was put in place. CSW: what you are doing to keep fit and train? Ollie: To keep fit and keep my body active at the moment I’m doing home exercises like plyometrics and lots of core work as well as doing a lot of power work to try and get stronger When I can get out, depending on the weather, I normally try to work on my block starts and my technique in the front yard or at the park close by. Connor: I’ve been trying to stay as fit and active during this period of lockdown as possible. Cricket is my number one sport, and being a spin bowler I’ve found myself going to the nets quite often just to have a bowl, to stay as fit and to keep my training levels up. I have also been regularly going for runs, not only to stay active and keep a routine going, but as we have been advised by our 1st XV coaches to stay fit and keep some sort of fitness programme going. I have been running up Mt Kaukau most days. CSW: Please share a lockdown sports practice or training tip for your school mates and others out there in the same situation? Ollie: Make sure you are drinking enough water as with nothing to do sometimes I forget to drink and this affects my energy levels greatly. Another tip I have is getting your family to do it with you for example my brother and I have been working out together and we do core work and simple things together like push ups and burpees and whatever else we can think of. Really make sure you are eating right. Connor: If there is any tip I can give to anyone out there, it’s just to stay fit and active! During times like these it’s often hard to maintain the same diet as to what you’d normally have, but staying fit during this lockdown time is something that is in your control. Challenge yourself, make yourself work hard. Go for a run, go kick a football, go to the cricket nets. Do what makes you happy and active! CSW: Are you in contact with your sporting friends about the above and are you motivating each other remotely? Ollie: I’ve been in contact with most of my training partners and friends checking up on them. We want to see how each other are doing and to share exercises to make sure all of us are staying in shape and healthy. Connor: We have a Facebook Messenger chat going for our 1st XV team, which a lot of the boys are using to send through their progress of either just running/fitness or strength and conditioning. By doing that, I believe we are motivating one another. On our 1st XV group page, we also have our assistant coach Dean Gorrie figuring out programmes which are best suited to us all, and reminders to stay fit. Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Instrumental and vocal lessons update If your Junior student is interested in taking instrumental / vocal lessons but has not yet enrolled, please download the form from the Student Hub and hand in or email the completed form to Fritz Wollner Lessons will be reorganised for Terms 3 and 4. If students have not been attending regularly, they need to see Mr Wollner as soon as possible to ensure they do not lose their spot. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her.         Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it.              WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back.              Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan.              Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

Sam Reid lead the team out for his 50th game amidst a very noisy reception for the Norths Prems from their Prem Reserve team. Both the 50 from Paddy Carter last week and Sam Reid this week seem to have come around really quickly. Congratulations Reido! Standout Performances A result like this is never from individual efforts but there were a few performances that were noticed on the terraces and worthy of a mention. Dale Sabbagh – sensational kicking from the tee, including a sideline conversion. Around the field his play was incredibly efficient too. Dale seems to be enjoying being one of the senior guys in our young backline and is directing the traffic really well. Keep it up Dale. Sam Reid – Sam shifted to centre for his 50th game but slotted in like he’d been playing there his whole career. Solid defence, good pace and distribution. Sam Godwin – Sam looked like a man possessed coming off the bench. He brought huge physicality to the contact area and some bone-rattling tackles. Some of the more senior supporters on the sideline were heard to start a ‘cheee-hooo’ before quickly putting themselves back in line and hiding inside their scarves. One Norths supporter did a ‘cheee-hooo’ for one of Sams tackles, he couldn’t help himself! Caleb Delaney – What could you say about Caleb’s effort? Just sheer bloody hard work. Cleaning rucks, close in tackles and disrupting opposition throws were just some of the hard work. Callum Harkin – Reward for great enterprise with a try. All around solid effort. Luke Chisholm – came off the bench and played well. Heard on the terraces… ‘he looks like a young Finbarr (Kerr-Newell)’. That would be a great target to live up to. I’m sure the referees of Wellington will be watching on eager to learn if the similarity stretches to Finbarr’s friendly advice for referees young and old. The game itself The 1st half was a slugfest with OBU inching away through the accurate boot of Dale Sabbagh and an early try to Fui in an in-goal pile-up from a drive! Norths scored a try and a penalty in reply, kicked by ex OBU prem Manahi Moana who it was great to catch up with and good to see he is finally clear of all the injuries that disrupted his time at OBU. There was a ding dong battle in the lineouts with both teams winning opposition ball. Norths Hooker Leni Apisai went off injured in the 23rd minute and No 8 Lise Soloa followed in the 35th minute. This was to have an impact in the second half as the early introduction of the replacements meant that there were less fresh legs later in the game to counter the energy coming from the OBU bench. There were quick switches in play from both teams from defence to attack and back to defence again in the space of a minute. Several opportunities were left unfinished form both teams. One break, in particular, had Norths with a 3 on 1 just outside the 22 but the last pass wasn’t good enough. OBU lead 13 – 8 at the break. In the 44th minute Norths were caught offside at a ruck where OBU was looking really dangerous. Dale took a successful shot at the sticks. OBU 16-8 From the kickoff there was an accidental offside when two OBU players ran into each other. From the resulting scrum Norths moved the ball and found some space but the last pass was forward. Then came a period on defence starting with what looked like an unlucky defensive penalty at the ruck. Norths kick for the corner but lost the lineout and OBU clears, but gets penalised again at the next lineout. Manahi Moana kicks the penalty for Norths OBU lead 16-11 At the 56 Minute mark, there is a great 30m run back from Shamus Langton. Norths are offside at the ruck and Dale steps up and takes the 3. OBU 19-11. Shortly after this OBU makes bulk changes. Matt Sleith (7), Kyle Preston (9), James Poloniati (5), Paddy Carter (4), Jonathon Fuimaono (3) all leave the field. Sam Godwin, Matt Fowler, Taine Plumtree, Kenan Gillson and Luke Chisholm come on to the field. All 5 replacement players are fizzing! Immediately there is a charge down and OBU switch hot onto the attack but concede a penalty. Unlucky! Norths struggle with a crooked throw from the lineout but redeem themselves somewhat with some scrum pressure and OBU caught with a hand in the scrum. At the 63 minute mark OBU pressurized the Norths backline. The ball is spilt by Norths then kicked through for Callum Harkin to claim the spoils with try #2 for OBU. Dale Slots the conversion OBU 26-11. There is some great interplay between Shamus and Matt ‘Unit’ Fowler before down the left-hand touchline heading to the sheds. Unit dots down in the corner for try #3 and to clinch the game. Dale adds the icing with a deadly accurate click from the sideline OBU 33-11. There was an injury in the following play to a Norths player who we believe was shown a blue card. Unlucky mate, hope for a speedy recovery. In the 79th minute Norths get some consolation after OBU was penalised for taking down a maul near the OBU tryline. A quick tap results in (#23 I think) crashing through for the try.     • A response to the Destiny Church: applying Christian ethics in a time of pandemic - Rev Allister Lane
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Last week Brian Tamaki vowed to hold a Destiny service this Sunday in defiance of the decision by the Government to continue the ban on large gatherings under Alert Level 2. Tamaki urged other churches to join him (see Stuff Article). Many of us will have our own instincts in responding to the pandemic, with varying appetites for social controls and government guidelines. So, as well as assessing the risks of the virus, how do we assess how we do ‘the right thing’? What should guide us in whether we side with the opinion of Destiny Church, or not? Christian ethics offer resources for us at this time, to know how best to respond as individuals, as churches, as communities, being attentive to what really matters. Here are five points of Christian ethics for us to consider in how we respond to the pandemic. The sanctity of human life Truth telling Social justice Church Witness in the world Government. Each of these is consider in more detail below as an offering toward a moral framework to help respond well in a time of pandemic. 1. The sanctity of human life. God has shown through scripture and the incarnation of Jesus that human beings have sacred worth. Given this understanding of the inviolable sacredness of human life, there is an imperative for us to protect human life. This value of human life is linked to love of neighbour. In Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, we are invited to consider what this means with regard to responding to the physical health, safety and well-being of the stranger (Luke 10:25-37). In his book Kingdom Ethics, David Gushee states “Love sees with compassion and enters into the situation of persons in bondage.” (David P. Gushee, Kingdom Ethics (Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2016), 204. ) The life and teaching of Jesus has shaped our understanding of prioritizing human health, and influenced the medicine and nursing vocations in caring for the sick, disabled and dying. Because Christians value the sanctity of human life, we strive to minimize any threat that destroys human life. We have all been presented with the evidence of the risks of large gatherings and how they unduly danger the lives and health of our neighbours. 2. Truth telling. A commitment to truthfulness is recognised as a hallmark of humility and forgiveness exercised in Christian discipleship. An openness to recognising the evidence and facing reality, in a way that allows our perceptions to be changed, is necessary in the pursuit of truth and the sharing of truth. We can therefore support the provision of clear and transparent information that offers guidance for making informed decisions. Insofar as the New Zealand Government and Health officials have offered clear and direct guidelines for mitigating the risks of the pandemic by limiting large gatherings, Christians should take this into account. 3. Social justice Scripture shows that human freedom is important to maintain. But human freedom is not ‘individualistic moral authority’ ( Gushee, Kingdom Ethics, 209) , rather it thrives when we live with love toward others by fostering compassionate justice. We must always recognise and advance the freedom of the other. In scripture justice is always ‘from below’, showing consideration and caring for the most vulnerable among us. Justice is only full when it includes justice for those who are the least in society. A pandemic affects everybody, but does not affect everybody equally. Our response must pay special attention therefore to those who are most vulnerable. Covid-19 is particularly dangerous and deadly to those among us who are elderly and have underlying health issues. Christians must therefore have particular regard for these vulnerable people among us. 4. Church Witness in the world Jesus says to his followers “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) The witness of the Church is to point to the person of Jesus as God’s revelation of truth, justice and compassion. What does the Church look and sound like when getting all grouchy and demanding our rights? Civil disobedience can be noble, and has been part of campaigns by Christians for standing up for what is right, but whose interests are we protecting? If we are witnesses to Christ, our actions will align with the interests of the least powerful and influential; we will demonstrate Christ’s love for those who may be otherwise overlooked by society. The Church exists for the sake of the world, and therefore its primary concern is not the preservation of its own internal activity. 5. Government. As part of Christian ethics, the Church must consider what is the ‘right’ relationship to hold with the Government. This needs to be assessed according to the system of government and the particular governing authorities of the time. In scripture we hear the deliberately subversive teaching of Jesus, who stated “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:13-17; Matthew 22:15-22; Luke 20:20-26). Jesus distanced himself from the Roman power structure and tax system that oppressed the poor, and cultivated idolatry. Christians live in a tension that recognises the appropriate role of the governing authorities, while giving ultimate loyalty to God as citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20). Importantly, the prohibition on large gatherings is not a prohibition of worship. Indeed, most churches are creatively using multiple forms of technology to continue worshipping. Therefore the ban on large gatherings for the sake of the common good is part of the appropriate role of the governing authorities – it is part of ‘the things that are Caesar’s’! Conclusion These five points of Christian ethics are offered to assist us in adequately considering how we best respond to the pandemic. They are guidance for us, as we try to do the right thing. These points are offered as a contribution toward a robust moral framework that helps us assess particular actions, decisions, proposals and priorities. But, we also need to maintain a gracious disposition toward others – especially those immediately around us. Let us not be too quick to condemn. With grace as our guide, we can assume the best in others, discover the way forward together and default to human solidarity – just as Jesus shows us. Working together to protect taumai DCM and Te Aro Health Centre (TAHC) have a long history of working together to support the most marginalised people in our city. TAHC operates a satellite outreach clinic at DCM three mornings a week. Over the past month, a key joint focus has been on ensuring that these vulnerable people are protected against COVID-19. The importance of this was brought into even sharper focus when our second vaccine clinic at DCM had to be postponed due to New Zealand entering another Level 4 lockdown. But as has always been the case at DCM, we found a way to make this work – and were able to continue to vaccinate those who need it most at a second vaccine day during lockdown. Here DCM’s Director, Stephen Turnock, and TAHC Nurse Practitioner/Clinic Lead, Bronwyn Boele van Hensbroek-Miller, talk about their shared commitment to the people who DCM calls taumai*. Before our first DCM vaccine day, we had lots of kōrero with taumai, ensuring they had the information they needed and that all their questions were answered. Here Bronwyn and Stephen lead a COVID vaccine information session at DCM. Stephen: Here at DCM this month, we have been reflecting on human rights – the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person. As a nation, we have signed up to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, yet so many of the people DCM supports do not have access to these basic rights. Article 25 states that everyone has 'the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and wellbeing of himself and his family' – including medical care. Our partnership with Te Aro Health Centre (TAHC) is key to providing this care for the people who come through our doors. Bronwyn: Yes, at Te Aro Health, we believe that everyone has a right to maintain good health and to have access to high quality health services. We work to assist those in Wellington’s inner city, with low or no income, and with other barriers to accessing healthcare, to achieve and maintain good health. Our priority is to enrol those who are homeless, those with a history of drug and alcohol abuse and those who have a mental illness. It was a very different world when the first vaccine clinic was held at DCM pre-lockdown. Stephen: Having TAHC and a team of vaccinators offer the COVID-19 vaccine here at DCM has been great for taumai – for them, it's all about accessibility. Having the vaccine available at DCM where they feel comfortable, among people they trust, has been an important factor. Last year, during our first lockdown, Bronwyn and her team went out alongside DCM kaimahi to connect with taumai in emergency housing, offering flu shots and health support. Every week, they are here at DCM, seeing taumai and addressing any health needs they may have: from long-term health issues through to injuries, rapid testing and treatment for hepatitis, and of course their mental health needs. And when we were again not able to open at DCM in Lukes Lane during this month’s Level 4 lockdown, TAHC continued to offer their support including COVID tests from their own health rooms nearby. In the weeks preceding our vaccine days at DCM, we have spoken with taumai, answered their questions and heard them share their own reasons for getting vaccinated. For our first vaccine day, we offered transport to DCM for those who needed it, so that they could receive their vaccine. We provided kai, community and waiata to taumai as they waited with us for 20 minutes after their vaccine. And after this time, we cheered for each person as they left, thanking them for the part they have played in keeping themselves, their whānau and all of us – their community – safe. Bronwyn: And then when we found ourselves in another lockdown, we worked together to find a way to continue vaccinating safely. TAHC enormously values the collaboration we have with DCM so it was great that last week we were again able to offer vaccines at DCM under Level 4 – masked up and safely spaced – enabling dozens of taumai to receive their first dose, and many their second. Rough sleepers who have been very reluctant to be vaccinated came forward and showed such courage. They are doing their part, just as so many other New Zealanders are. Yes, this is just one more example of how we can support the health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable people in our community when we all work together. Last week, taumai were able to safely access a COVID vaccine at DCM under Level 4 thanks to Bronwyn and her team. 24 received their second doses, while 56 received their first. At this challenging time, DCM was also able to support them in other ways. One very vulnerable man received his vaccine, and then we were able to arrange emergency housing for him. <!-- --> "I chose to get vaccinated because..." Our director Stephen led the way and was the first member of team DCM to get vaccinated. "I chose to get vaccinated to not only protect myself and my whānau but also to protect my community and those I interact with on a daily basis. As a middle-aged Māori, I also recognise that we have an increased risk of infection, hospitalisation and death. Therefore if my choice to be vaccinated results in more health resources available for others in need...Tu meke!!!" Some of our kaimahi received their vaccine at DCM – to inspire taumai to get their vaccine too. Delena (Mama Dee) is a member of team DCM who heads out to community centres as part of DCM’s community connections mahi: “I chose to get vaccinated in order to become a safer member of my community – I did it for my whānau, my colleagues at DCM, and the wider community.” Fiona is one of DCM's kaiawhina (peer support workers). She received her vaccine here at DCM alongside taumai. "I chose to be vaccinated because I care about our whānau – both those we support here in this special community which is DCM, and my whānau down south. It was in the back of my mind for a while, but being able to get the vaccine here at DCM – well, it was a no-brainer." Manu was the first of many taumai to receive the COVID vaccine at DCM. "Why did I choose to get vaccinated? I have been coming to DCM for 16 years. It takes 10 years to get to know me! But now I feel comfortable here because I know you all, and you know me. And I was reminded of a verse – 'Evening passed and morning came'. We have all been through some tough times, but now there is something we can do for ourselves and for others." Nicole was also one of the first to line up for a vaccine at DCM. "I chose to get vaccinated because I'm pregnant and I want to protect my baby." Some taumai shared beautiful reflections with us. One man told us: "I know that my ancestors have got my back. I just imagined, 'what if I got COVID and took it back to my marae?' I couldn't face my ancestors... So I looked up to the sky and thought, 'we got this'." <!-- --> Supporting the most marginalised during lockdown DCM kaimahi have been working in designated pair "bubbles", to keep everyone safe. Here George and Jay are all loaded up and ready to hit the road, delivering much needed food support to taumai. At alert Level 4, we have not been able to invite taumai to spend time with us here at DCM, or to meet with them out in the community centres near to their homes when they are housed. However as always, DCM has remained committed to supporting the most marginalised in many different ways. Taumai can get hold of us on a dedicated 0800 number and phones are again available for those who need them. The Outreach team has been heading out on the streets to connect with rough sleepers, while the Aro Mai Housing First and Sustaining Tenancies teams continue to provide a wide range of services to taumai throughout the Wellington region, ensuring they are well connected and supported during this difficult time. Food has been dropped on the doorstep for those who need it most, and emergency housing arranged for those without shelter. Our teams have also been calling taumai to check in with them and see how they are doing. Taumai often tell us that it is this contact and kōrero that they value most; lockdown is a very lonely time for many. This visit presented the opportunity for the Prime Minister to announce an additional $4 million for the project which will ultimately enable students from 500 NZ schools to work with professonal artists and creative practitioners, benefiting from their specialist artistic knowledge and creative practices. Thirteen of our He Kākano students are involved in the programme which is aimed at enhancing student wellbeing and improving their ‘core competencies in communication, collaboration and creative thinking’, as well as inspiring awareness of careers in the arts and creative sectors. As part of the visit He Kākano shared what they had learned prior to lockdown, demonstrating fantastic memory of their routines and great coordination too. (b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Newtown Festival Rhona thanked all the marshalls and other volunteers for helping. The meeting made an enthusiastic  vote of thanks and appreciation to the organisers for another very successful Festival.Sadly there was one violent event later in the evening; this seemed to be the result of a personal conflict between two visitors to Newtown. The Police and Community Patrol were involved. Don asked what the noise policy is, as he worries about how loud the Festival is.  Tom Law outlined the Council policy. Wellington City Council Consultations Parking Policy.  Consultation opened today and will run till April 14th. WCC had a traveling road show on the subject in Newtown Mall this morning. It wasn’t widely advertised and no one at the meeting knew it was going to be there, or attended.Rhona noted that the policy is very high-level at this stage. We recommend that people look at the material on the website.  The questions on the web site are quite general so Newtown-specific concerns would need to be added in narrative form.Some general issues were discussed.We will consider different things we can agree on, such as further communication with WCC to develop a Newtown-specific plan, and sensible Residents’ Parking areas and fees. Planning for Growth The WCC Consultation Team were to have a Newtown Festival stall but cancelled because they were not quite ready to go.  Next consultation meeting is on 26 March at Prefab – Jane and Rhona  interested in going. No one had any further comment: Rhona suggested reading the web page and keeping up-to-date with progress on the development of a proposed spatial plan for the city.District Plan Review – this is beginning at the end of this year or early next. Water Warrick is concerned that water metres are coming back into discussion.  This has resulted in some suggesting we ‘need’ water metres to pay for replacement of aged infrastructure.A number of views were expressed regarding the pros and cons of water metering. COVID-19 Eileen Brown is working for the Council of Trade Unions developing plans and consolidating ideas for “managing the risk and flattening the curve”.The current situation was outlined, along with common narratives being used to describe the situation and management options.  Eileen described then distributed some information.Marion Leighton (Consultant Physician at Wellington Hospital) arrived during this discussion, having been at a hospital meeting on the same topic. She outlined the hospital’s plans for managing an influx of seriously ill patients and also answered questions. Most important thing is to wash hands frequently and thoroughly, cough and sneeze into your elbow or tissues, don’t touch your face, avoid physical contact with others and self-isolate at the first sign of any symptoms. We are in this for the long-term, so make sure you have a reasonable plan. Emergency Management Discussion Neville Carson outlined his background in Civil Defence (previous name for Emergency Management, and introduced “Wellington Conversations” – facilitated conversations on various topics which have been running in Newtown and elsewhere for several months.Neville is organising a meeting to discuss Emergency Management issues on 31 March, 7:30 to 9:30, at Newtown Hall, using a model based on Wellington Conversations. Circus Performers – Steve informed the meeting that on Wednesday evening (18th Mcaarch) in Carrara Park circus performers will be performing with LED Hula hoops. Meeting ended at 8:58

    • Miramar v BNU 1sts - 25th August 2013
      • 2pm, David Farrington Park We headed to David Farrington Park to play Miramar in the final game of the season.  Following Saturday's results, we believed a solitary point would be enough to keep us clear of the relegation places.   The game kicked off with the intensity of a cup final.  The Brooklyn crowd were vocal in their support, the large travelling contingent of fans certainly made the lads feel 10 feet tall.  The game was being played at a cracking pace: a strong Miramar side featuring former All White Campbell Banks and current Solomon Islands International Henry Fa'arodo, was being matched by the heroes in red and black.   The first 30 minutes was fairly even.  Both sides were spraying the ball around with confidence and great speed,  the Miramar coach admitting the game was being played at Capital Premier standard.   The deadlock was broken when Miramar smashed a volley from the top of the box after 32 minute s, a quality strike that left Zen no chance.  Miramar doubled their lead 10 minutes later from a free kick, the Miramar player's run not being picked up, leaving him unmarked at the far post for an easy finish.  2-nil down and all to play for.   BNU were awarded a penalty right on half time for a handball in the box.  Paul Sanchez, who has been great from the penalty spot, strode forward with purpose, only to watch his shot go wide of the left hand upright.  The score remained 2-nil to Miramar at half time.   There was calm in the changing room, as we were creating a number of chances and our covering defence had prevented Miramar from testing Zen with shots on goal.  We believed if we kept to our standards we could get back into the game.  The next goal would be the most important of the match.   The 2nd half started at the same pace as the first.  We continued to press high up the pitch to prevent Miramar from getting into any kind of rhythm.  Their increased ball speed certainly tested us and the class and experience of their players was stretching us right across the pitch.  However, we were not giving up without a fight and were rewarded for our efforts when Paul Clune smashed home after 58 minutes to bring the score back to 2-1.  This also bought the crowd back into the game, they had been fantastic throughout.   Ben Goodwin, who had been introduced at half time, went close on two occasions shortly after, with almost identical shots from the edge of the area.  His pace and direct style were causing problems for the Miramar back four.  We were dealt a blow on 70 minutes when Campbell Banks finally got the better of Damian Gurnick, turning on the edge of the area, to beat Zen in the left hand bottom corner.  3-1 down, with 20 minutes to play.  It was time to gamble and throw numbers forward.  We had nothing to lose and everything to gain.   2 minutes later Banks was at it again, losing his marker and slotting his 2nd to make it 4-1 with 15 minutes to play.  You would forgive BNU if heads dropped, but not with this team, the lads weren't prepared to throw in the towel, and in true BNU fashion they fought for every possession and continued to push forward.   Tom Bisley and Ben Purser were introduced, giving us 4 strikers on the pitch for the final 15 minutes of the season.  Tom Bisley went close, not once but twice, but unfortunately shot wide on both occasions.   As we pressed forward, there were inevitably gaps left at the back and Banks completed his hat-trick with 3 minutes to play.  Just to rub salt into the wound, Miramar scored a 6th with the last kick of the game. 6-1 the final score which in no way reflects how close the game was.   As the lads left the pitch, and rightly applauded the large BNU crowd, our attention now turned to the Island Bay vs Seatoun match being played at Wakefield Park.  A Seatoun win would see us clear of the bottom 2.  We received update after update from our Chairman Martin Gray, who was finally able to phone through the result we had all been waiting for, 2-1 victory to Seatoun.   Back in the Miramar clubrooms, there was a mix of cheer and relief as we believed we could now reflect on a season of highs and lows.   Strong performances, in this our last game, from Captain Andy Cochrane, who was all industry and quality in the middle of the park, Damian Gurnick, who put his body on the line time and time again, and Man of the Match Simon Barker, who won everything in the air and reminded everyone of his undoubted talent.   A special thanks to the crowd who really helped the lads dig deep right to the end.  You guys were fantastic!   I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin Gray, Adam Brownie and the Committee for all of their support over the last 2 seasons.  Special thanks needs to go to our physio Dan Sainsbury and my team manager Annie Bannister for all of their hard work and high standards set and maintained throughout the season.   Finally, I would like to publicly thank the playing group for their contribution to the 2013 season.  It has been a pleasure working with you all this year.  You have represented this club in the best possible way, on and off the pitch.  You all bought into the plan and genuinely wanted to play football the way it's meant to be played.  Andy Cochrane and Simon Barker led the team each week with class and integrity.  Without them, the task would have been so much harder.  Thank you both.   I look forward to seeing you all this weekend at the Prize Giving.  Hopefully we can sit down over a beer and celebrate what has been an eventful season.     • Hope vs Choat
      • Recently in David Choat’s blog he explains that a previous post recalling his observations in his first Capital and Coast DHB meeting led to him receiving a note from Board Chair Dr Virginia Hope (who was recently appointed to both the CCDHB and the Hutt Valley DHB – criticised as a first step towards amalgamation of the two health boards) as a breach of the CCDHB media policy (which effectively says that the Chair should be the person responsible for any comments for the Board) Hope’s explanation is not entirely clear from David’s post, only that it had caused her distress. It would be a fair point to make had Choat attempted to represent the Board exclusively. Yet, if anything, the article reads about what he did and thought at the meeting. I can’t see how what he said would have been any different had Choat been in a public meeting, or in a one-on-one chance meeting with one of his constituents. In fact the post by Choat in question was entitled “Reflections on my first board meeting” Go read the post for Choat’s response, which I think reflects his commitment to transparency with the public on (open) board matters being debated as part of a publicly accountable body. So, what precisely does the policy do – here is a copy (1MB PDF). It was last updated and debated at a meeting in August 2009. The comms manager wasn’t present and Helene Ritchie was the only member to vote against it. Odd. It’s no surprise how unworkable the policy has been in practice. It basically bars any direct interaction with the public by board members. I wonder what kind of world the drafters of this policy were living in when they thought that such restrictions on public debate would actually work. Would it be surprising that Dr Hope doesn’t agree with David’s very blunt but arguably popular slogan “Care not cuts” as a way to deal with the challenges at the CCDHB: “Cuts is really the wrong word. Savings, I think, is a better word” (The Wellingtonian, 6 January 2011) Clearly, any Chair would not want to have to battle the framing of an alternative viewpoint as well as the controversial challenges for an organisation like those faced by the CCDHB, but it also makes me wonder what the Chair’s personal direction will be in the Board’s response to those challenges? Regardless, there appears to be a developing division between the new board member and the new chair. Already, Choat has said that the matter of the media policy will be on the agenda at the next meeting. There doesn’t appear to be much that the Chair could do, but the board (particularly the publically elected members) should be mindful of the public’s need to be informed unfettered by the spin that sometimes happens and refuse to punish Choat. The next meeting is on February 4 at 8.30am (in the Board Room on 11th Floor of the Grace Neill Block, Wellington Regional Hospital on Riddiford Street, Newtown), and you can attend in person to make sure the Board get the point. Turning to the 50 candidates for Confirmation, he read a letter from one explaining their wish for the sacrament. ‘…to announce myself in front of my Catholic Community is something I am proud to do for it is part of my hikoi tapu – sacred journey – to God. I have always enjoyed seeing and participating in the Eucharist because of the unity I sense when everyone partakes of the body and blood of Hehu Karaiti. Our current station gives us the opportunity to increase our crew numbers to our desired benchmark of 30 as well as housing our entire fleet, which currently consists of 6 vehicles, 4 trailers and a Communication Caravan.
