    • Basketball teams make finals
      • Congrats to our Newlands Senior A & B Boys teams who have both made the finals night at the ASB on Friday. In Division 3, Newlands Senior A had a convincing 89 – 42 win v HVHS 2 and will take on Naenae in the final. In Division 5, Newlands Senior B had a close 68 – 61 win v Raphael House and will take on St Pats Town 3 in the final.

We live in the same suburb.       • How do I even begin to describe this band? I’ve been dying to write about Lipstick since I saw them for the first time at Valhalla in April. Without a doubt, Lipstick has become my favorite band to see live, and I’ve been hooked since that very first show. Since their debut as a band at the end of March, they’ve become a prominent presence in the gig scene—and for good reason.

Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! We’ll start with a fun event at 4pm, followed by the meeting at 5pm. The AGM will include the President and Treasurer’s report, and an overview of the year. We will also confirm the draft minutes for 2024. This year we also passed a new Constitution and will need to elect a smaller Committee for 2026: President Treasurer 3 other officers. The Secretary will be appointed from within the Committee. The Committee will also be supported by working parties reporting into the Committee, but these are not elected roles. This is a bit of change, and we’re open to hearing what working groups you think would be useful and may like to be part of going forward. If you would like to stand for the Committee, or have any queries, please contact Lachlan McKenzie, Secretary at secretary@wellingtonorienteering.org.nz This is a chance to celebrate the year, discuss plans, and enjoy time together and great food! Originally held in winter, the “Classic” is an endurance event that is both physically and mentally demanding. The event takes the form of a one-person relay with a pivot control and a series of loops—meaning you get the thrill of trying all loops and legs yourself! A rogaine is also offered as part of the Classic. The event was founded by the Wairarapa Orienteering Club, and the M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of Wayne Cretney, a Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987.     • Rethinking the airport barrier
      • Despite being surrounded by high hills, Wellington is fortunate to have an international airport that is under 10km from its CBD, with flight approaches over Cook Strait to the south and just missing the Newland hills to the north. The drawback is the runway which forms a major physical barrier over 2km long between the city and the airport terminal and the growing population of over 20,000 residents who live east of the airport on Miramar Peninsula.

    • Counting Down The Days
      • The impending sale of Crossways is entering its final days, with tenders due to close on 6 August. Moves are afoot with the Crossways Community Trust to finalise details of the tender the community intends putting in for the building. According to Bill Southworth, Chair of the Trust, “We are close to arriving at what we think is a fair price for Crossways, and we intend making a strong bid to retain ownership of our community house.”

    • Wellington is facing rising sea levels
      • At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

      • As we all know (or at least those of us who have small children) Squidward Tentacles is an arrogant and egotistical 'octopus' who lives in an Easter Island moai and dislikes his neighbors (especially SpongeBob) for their child-like behavior. He enjoys playing the clarinet and painting self-portraits. Well, one of his close relatives washed up this rainy morning just down the road from our house at Houghton Bay. Jane helped drag it up the beach.

      • In 1959 a couple sell their house. At 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, their neighbours casually call in to see how packing is going. During the friendly discussion information about the buyers is revealed and tempers flare. In 2009 members of a community meet at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon to discuss neighborhood covenants before the new couple in the community start making alterations. Although their lives seem similar on the surface, their motivations are different, setting up conflict.

      • Peter Augustin's exhibition, 'View of Life wth Roses' opens on Wednesday 9 October. Peter was born in Solvenia and had a successful and continuing career in Europe after being based in Switzerland for many years, before moving to New Zealand. Have a look on the Current Exhibition page to see his new work. This exhibition is Peter's first with the Kiwi Art House Gallery, and it's a great pleasure to introduce him to followers of the gallery.

      • An adaptation of Shakespeare’s narrative poem “The rape of Lucrece” by Binge Culture Collective. It’s a visual+audio installation at the Toi Poneke Gallery plus a live performance on Thursday and Friday evenings. Fiona McNamara’s director’s note states “This production of Shakespeare’s poem claims the text, written by a man in a patriarchal society, as a woman’s story and investigates what happens to performance and to an audience when the female body is present and the male body is absent.”
