      • Passchendaele: The Belgians Have Not Forgotten Venue: ANZAC Hall Featherston Date: 17 July – 16 August Hours: 10am – 4pm daily This exhibition focuses on how the memories of New Zealand still live on in Flanders today, 90 years after the devastating conflict that cost so many young kiwi lives. These memories are brought to life through images, movies and artefacts. New Zealand lost more men during the 100 days of fighting than any other commonwealth country - 845 on one day alone during the First Battle of Passchendaele, 12 October, 1917. The people of Flanders and, more widely, the people of Belgium have never forgotten this sacrifice, which is commemorated in this very special exhibition.

    • It’s a Renters World, and We’re…Not Living in it?
      • You may have seen headlines telling you that Wellington rental prices are dropping, that it’s a renter’s market, or that with the exodus of public service workers from the capital, landlords are getting desperate. To some extent, that is true, and to a greater extent, it’s not. Salient asked Trade Me about the current perceptions of the rental market. Year on year, the asking price for a property in Wellington was down 2.9%, and since September 2024, Trade Me saw a 28% increase in the number of rental listings in the city. These figures might lead you to believe that rents are dropping. Well, they’re not (in most places). Between December 2024 and January 2025, the median rental price went from $650 to $675 according to Trade Me’s data.

    • Half price fares to be extended on Metlink services
      • Metlink has welcomed the Government’s extension of half price public transport fares until the end of June 2023. The extension, announced today by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, is part of the Government’s ongoing support intended to ease the cost-of-living pressures. Metlink Commercial, Strategy & Investments Manager Tim Shackleton said the half price fares extension would enable passengers to ready themselves for the eventual go live date for the Community Connect scheme which permanently reduces public transport fares for Community Services Card (CSC) holders by 50 percent. “With around 90,000 CSC holders in the Wellington region, Metlink has worked with the Ministry of Social Development to develop a system that provides quick and easy access to half price fares when the scheme rolls out,” says Tim Shackleton.

    • City Bus Service Blindspots: Ōwhiro Bay Residents Develop Killer Calves
      • Ōwhiro Bay has been abandoned by the bus network, according to a new report. During off-peak times, it takes two buses and over 45 minutes to get from Ōwhiro Bay to the city centre. The suburb is disproportionately affected by bus cancellations. Its residents are fed up. Now, they’ve taken matters into their own hands, writing a twenty-thousand-word report to prove their own experience. Jack Graham and Arunan Noble are both Ōwhiro Bay residents and, in the spirit of full disclosure, friends of the author. They both live with their parents while studying at VUW. After many years of being disappointed by the bus system, hope was initially raised when Metlink announced incoming improvements at the start of 2024.

      • At today's Strategy & Policy Committee meeting, the Council voted to give Crossways a 12 month reprieve by providing some interim funding to St Andrews. This will allow enough time for the community to form a trust, put together a plan to re-invent Crossways for the 21st Century, and conduct some serious fund-raising. It's not the three years we asked for, but it's fair, reasonable, and - most of all - achievable. It's a fantastic outcome! Our heart-felt thanks go to St Andrews for their flexibility and genuine commitment to finding a workable compromise, and to the Council who have allowed the community the time to re-invent our community house. We'll post more information about what needs to happen next as soon as we can.

    • Architecture Awards night
      • es, tonight is the night for the architectural community, as the local Wellington region Awards for Architecture and annual knees up are being held tonight. Last year the awards went to the New Dowse, the Masterton Police Station and the Greytown Town Hall, Holiday Inn, the new Maritime Tower, Len Lye’s water whirler, the waterfront refurbishment of Shed 13, and the highly deserved award for Conservation House (which went on to win a Supreme Award by the year’s end), as well as a swathe of awards for some very fine housing. Awards are being held in the very evocatively period Shed 13 tonight - lets hope that the owners have managed to install some toilet and kitchen facilities which are noticeably absent in this picture from last year!

    • October 2009 Update
      • On Monday 5th October 2009 there was a meeting held between Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Wellington City Council officers. This meeting was called by the council to discuss a new proposed outcome for the fire damaged Maranui building; as revealed by the Dominion Post on Friday the 2nd October. The concept they put to the Maranui members was to demolish the 4 council buildings on the Lyall Beach and replace them with a purpose built “Super Building” which would incorporate Lyall Bay surf club, Maranui surf club, NZAAT Beach House Art Gallery, toilet and shower facilities etc. Maranui Surf Club members were surprised and disappointed with yet another delay and are unsure how this new concept is relevant to the repair of the Maranui building.

    • Wellington Sea Kayak Network visit the Yacht Club
      • After one cancellation due to bad weather, an evening paddle took place on Friday 9th of April 2010 in lieu of a normal club meeting. 8 people gathered at Balaena bay at 6:00pm , some paddling from Greta Point where they house kayaks at the Kupe boatshed. It was a perfect evening with a gentle northerly breeze just ruffling the water. We paddled toward Lambton harbour as it was getting dark and the city lights greeted us as we rounded point Jerningham. The fountain was playing and there were a few hopeful fishermen still out on Oriental parade as our small fleet made its way towards the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, nestled in a marina between the Freyberg pool and the Overseas Terminal.

      • am genuinely lost for words, trying to describe Twenty Minutes to Nine. It was nostalgic, raw, grim and witty, heart-sinking and furious and so painfully wise. Absolutely phenomenal. The show is personal even before it starts. I’m sitting in the front of two rows of seats, so there’s no doubt it’ll be an intimate show. Amanda (Santuccione (They/Her), the show’s writer and performer) asks what we’re up to afterwards, if we’d be alright to wait another 5 minutes for the last few people. In the end it’s me, a mother-and-adult-son duo, three other women and Amanda. We chat back and forth about hills and penguins, public transport and spilt beer. Then suddenly, with only the quieting of the house music, it begins.

      • Every second-month young people come together at Zeal Kāpiti to showcase their skills. From experienced performers to new artists, live sound engineers, photographers, and event managers, this event is made by young people for young people. The Kāpiti team of young people arrive at midday to start setting up the stage, lighting, sound gear, green room, clear out the hangs and events spaces, and fill the centre with chairs and beanbags. If the weather is nice they open up our massive roller door which opens up a whole wall in our events space and creates an awesome indoor outdoor flow. Young people start rolling in, some grab the Zeal DSLR cameras and start taking photos and videos while the performers are getting prepped in the green room upstairs.

    • Good Keen Men at Suite
      • Suite will show work by nine of New Zealand’s most-loved male artists from Wednesday 18 February 2009. Good keen men features John Gully, Theo Schoon, Bill Hammond, Keith Morant, Nigel Brown, Robin Morrison, Henry Winkelmann, George Chance and E. Mervyn Taylor. The exhibition shows rarely-seen works by many of the artists. Highlights include two Bill Hammond works on paper for the mid 1970s and two large vintage silver gelatine prints by Henry Winkelmann, a pioneer of New Zealand photography. Two mid-career Morrison works, from his ‘Images of a House’ and ‘Thorndon’ series juxtapose early 20th century photographer George Chance’s landscape work. Chance is known as a bestselling pictorialist photographer of his day. Good Keen Men runs from Wednesday 18 February to Saturday 7 March 2009.

      • Here at DCM, we like to celebrate the special moments that can be found in each and every day. In 2021, we have been sharing one such moment every week via our social media channels - on “Taumai Tuesday”. Here we look back on a year of Taumai Tuesdays... We celebrated when taumai moved into their own homes, often after many years of homelessness - like Peter and Jason. Jason sent us a letter soon after: "Dear DCM crew, I would like to express my gratitude to all of you for helping me onto the next step of my journey and finding me a house. I'd like to acknowledge the humbleness and humility within your organisation, and the way you all treated me as nothing less than human. For that I am truly grateful."

    • Unpacking Our Ngatu
      • When thinking about how to contextualise the recent additions of Cora-Allan’s works on hiapo within our collection, curator Sophie Thorn couldn’t help but think about the giant roll of ngatu tāhina (decorated barkcloth) tucked away in the corridor of the gallery’s back of house stairwell. Out of the way but never quite out of sight, the thought of seeing the work in its entirety was tantalising. Her goal was to enable visitors to be able to walk the length of the ngatu; to take it all in, to be engulfed by it and understand the sheer scale of collaborative effort that has gone into the making of this piece. Our files on the piece lack detail and, without an exhibition of this kind, were likely to stay this way.

On Sunday 4 May, we held our Course Planning Seminar, which was a resounding success! About 12 people came along and we were thrilled to see such strong participation from experienced orienteers and those newer to the sport. The seminar provided valuable insights into course design and use of Condes software that is used for mapping orienteering courses. A huge thank you to Dick Dinsdale for arranging this as well as our contingent of helpers, and all who attended! This seminar not only strengthened our collective knowledge but also helped build a more connected and engaged community. We’re already planning future educational events to continue this momentum. I encourage all of you to keep the conversation going and apply what you've learned at our upcoming events. Throughout May and June, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get outdoors, improve your skills, and continue to challenge yourself. We’re also looking forward to an SGM and potluck on Sunday 8 June where we will vote on Orienteering Wellington’s new Constitution. Looking forward to seeing you all at our events! North Island Secondary Schools Champs This year’s North Island Secondary Schools Champs was hosted by Counties Manukau Orienteering Club. Congratulations to Orienteering Wellington members Troy Thompson, Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan, who came second in the Year 12-13 Senior Boys relay. Morag McLellan also came fourth in Year 12-13 Senior Girls long distance champs, and fifth in the sprint. Supporting our members Orienteering Wellington has awarded a $750 travel grant to club members selected to represent New Zealand internationally at International Orienteering Federation events. Rachel Baker and Jake McLellan will be representing New Zealand at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Trentino, Italy, from June 26 to July 3, 2025, as has Morag McLellan at Brno, Czechia, from 17 – 20 July. Lizzie Ingham has been selected for the team attending the World Orienteering Champs in Kuopio, Finland, from 8 – 12 July. Jake McLellan, World-Class Orienteer and Mountain Man Orienteering Wellington member Jake McLellan won the fabled Tararua Mountain Race – Southern Crossing, a 36km mountain run from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Forks. It was an epic effort that saw Jake crossing the finish line in 7:08:08. Jake says: “The race kicked off fast, and I couldn’t stick with the early pace, so I settled into my own rhythm and made sure to save some gas for the back half. Just after Alpha Hut, I spotted the leaders a couple of minutes ahead — that gave me a real boost and helped me keep pushing across the tops. I made goodtime across the tops and caught up to Chester at Kime Hut. After Bridge Peak, I put the hammer down on the technical descent and managed to pull away. From there, it was just a fast hobble down from Field Hut to the finish. “I'm absolutely stoked to take the win at such an iconic event! It's an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside some legends of the sport.” Tips and Tricks To help you improve your orienteering skills this winter, here are a few tips from our experienced members: Stay on the trail: In challenging conditions, it’s often easier to follow a trail, path, or prominent feature rather than trying to cross open terrain. It will save you time and help you maintain orientation. Map reading in low visibility: If you're out in low-light conditions, try marking key features(like water bodies or trails) on your map before starting. This will help you stay oriented even when visibility is reduced. Check your compass often: Don’t rely on your compass just once at the start. Check it regularly to ensure you’re staying on course. Small errors in direction can add up to big detours! Practise regularly: Winter orienteering training doesn’t have to be outdoors. Use mapsin your local area to practice route planning, compass work, and even map-reading skills indoors. Familiarity with your map will pay off in the field. Development and events There’s a lot happening in the coming months. This Sunday sees us at Baring Head, followed by another event at Battle Hill on Sunday 8 June. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. Advanced entries close 11.59pm Saturday. We’re offering a practical training session at Karori Park on Sunday 15 June. You’ll get a chance to put your newfound skills to the test at Matariki, in the pine forest and sand dunes of Waikawa, north of Ōtaki. Further afield is the three-day King’s Birthday event in the Hawkes Bay. Entries close Thursday. Orienteering Bay of Plenty’s Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua is coming up on Saturday 26 July 2025 – a fun, team navigation challenge where you try to collect as many controls as you can in the time allowed. There are 3- and 6-hourevents that you can do on foot or mountain bike. It’s a great adventure for groups of friends and family. Entries close Tuesday 22 July. A true icon of alternative music, Thalia Zedek has been part of some of underground independent music’s fiercest and finest moments, including Live Skull and Uzi in the 1980s, and noisy 90s indie favourites Come. Since then, Thalia has become a mainstay on legendary Chicago label Thrill Jockey (Trans Am, Rose City Band) with her brilliant Thalia Zedek Band output. As her label tells it, “Her ability to deliver raw emotions through her vivid stories of loss and hope, strife and triumph is unmatched”. New album The Boat Outside Your Window arrives next month, with new singles Tsunami and Naming Names suggesting this record is set to turn heads and destroy worlds.     • Review: Sandwich Artist
      • Maybe I’m being subjective here, but a show playing “Man or Muppet” as house music is bound to be good fun. And Sandwich Artist was! A heartwarming and silly musical, that poked fun at the genre conventions while being a genuinely well-put together show, with a lot of love and just a bit more to it than only sliced bread. The story follows Sammy Rye (Phoebe Caldeiro), an unrecognised sandwich genius working for an unnamed sandwich chain, who’s unorthodox, off-menu sandwiches get her fired, despite how good they are. She gambles it all on a bus ride to Wellington, where a fellowship is formed with a despondent carrot farmer (Catherine Gavigan-Binnie), a butcher with attachment issues (Anna Barker), and a strangely shifty baker (Dylan Hutton). Phoebe and Jack McGee worked together on a story that does a lot with very little: only 6 major speaking roles and minimal props or set.

      • News Cecily McNeill September 2013 One parishioner in the tiny town of Ward near the epicentre of last month’s 6.6 earthquake is planning to teach her grandchildren about their guardian angels because she says someone was certainly looking after them. Mary Hickman who, with husband Ossie, and their three sons form the nucleus with the West family of the parish in Ward, says they are all counting their blessings. Her husband, who is disabled, was lying on the bed alone in their brick house when the quake struck at 2.31pm on Friday 16 August. He said it was like being in a very violent storm at sea. ‘Things were ‘flying off the walls’ during the violent and prolonged shaking ‘but he wasn’t hit,’ she said. When the shaking stopped he managed to get himself into the nearby sitting room to wait for one of the sons to help him to safety. All the families gathered away from the houses and power lines until the first of the numerous aftershocks had subsided and one of Mary’s sons, whose wooden house needs its chimney demolished, has moved his family with four children to temporary accommodation in Blenheim. She and Ossie moved to a motel. Another branch of the family most of whom farm between Grassmere and Ward have sustained ‘massive damage’. ‘One of their homes, a brick house, is red-stickered (uninhabitable).’ Mary says the experience has been numbing. ‘You know you have to manage but it’s one day at a time.’ And as for those guardian angels, ‘it’s a good opportunity to learn that God has special people he sends to take care of us’, says Mary. Meanwhile, the quake has also rendered the town’s Catholic Church unsafe. The top third of the bricks on the steeple of the church, which celebrated 75 years recently, have loosened. The tower is over the entrance to the church. Scientists say last month’s quakes came from a fault line lying under Lake Grassmere about 40 kilometres south of Blenheim whereas the July shocks were centred more in Cook Strait. The more than 3,500 aftershocks since the 5.7 on 19 July have given seismologists a clearer idea of the larger fault system, the Dominion Post reported on 20 August. It appears seismic activity is moving away from Wellington. GNS geoscientist Bill Fry said it was more important to think in terms of a seismic network. ‘There are a lot of faults in the upper South Island that could potentially give rise to earthquakes,’ he told the Dominion Post. And the archdiocese is still awaiting confirmation of the extent of minor damage to others of its buildings in the wider region. Structural engineers have inspected the Catholic Centre and other archdiocesan workplaces and say the damage appears from initial assessment to be cosmetic. Director of Archdiocesan Support Services David Mullin is asking parishes to look for any signs of damage  to assess the need for an engineer's inspection. These earthquakes are a timely reminder of the need to do what we can to improve the strength of buildings for people’s safety and confidence.
