It's how we're drinking
- The Wellingtonista
- Good to see the local hostelries promoting responsible drinking: tonight, Blend are not only offering $5 Jägerbomb tickets, but are hosting a "New Zealand Jägerbomb record attempt" at 9pm. I really don't envy the street cleaners who'll have to deal with Wakefield St tomorrow morning.

Hataitai Tunnel To Be Bus Only
- Auckland Trains
- Should buses only be allowed to use Wellington’s Mt Vic bus tunnel, which runs between Pirie Street in Mt Victoria and Waitoa Road,Hataitai? It’s been a hotly debated issue – just like Auckland’s debate about when cars should be allowed to use Grafton Bridge.

A new piece of cycleway in Levin

City Bus Service Blindspots: Ōwhiro Bay Residents Develop Killer Calves
- Salient
- Ōwhiro Bay has been abandoned by the bus network, according to a new report. During off-peak times, it takes two buses and over 45 minutes to get from Ōwhiro Bay to the city centre. The suburb is disproportionately affected by bus cancellations. Its residents are fed up. Now, they’ve taken matters into their own hands, writing a twenty-thousand-word report to prove their own experience. Jack Graham and Arunan Noble are both Ōwhiro Bay residents and, in the spirit of full disclosure, friends of the author. They both live with their parents while studying at VUW. After many years of being disappointed by the bus system, hope was initially raised when Metlink announced incoming improvements at the start of 2024.

A Pandemic Pictorial
- Capital & Coast District Health Board
- Winter’s always a busy period at any hospital, and June 2009 was especially busy with the arrival of the “Swine Flu” pandemic adding further stresses and strains. The arrival of “Novel A H1N1” (to give the swine flu its proper name) required all hospital staff to rapidly adapt to the changing environment. Otago University School of Medicine photographer Lousie Goossens spent some time looking at the various roles C&C DHB staff played during the early stages of the swine flu pandemic.

Mount Street Cemetery
- The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
