2020 Port Nicholson Regatta – You Were Here!

- What a sensational Port Nicholson Regatta! With over 170 Sailors and 30 boats on the water, including over half a dozen visiting boats with 4 Sports Boats from Auckland, RPNYC delivered an event members can be proud of! The Port Nicholson Regatta opened with the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race on Thursday, followed by a convivial Regatta Dinner and presentations to Britannia Sea Scouts, Wellington Free Ambulance, and Live Ocean. It provided opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic support from our sponsors who help make things better and easier: Yamaha, Crombie Lockwood, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Mt Gay, Steinlager, North Sails, Burnsco, Pivotal Print, Barton Marine, Havana, Mevo, Chaffers Marina, and Whittaker’s. The event delivered three days of intensive and rewarding regatta racing in perfect weather. Impeccable race management led by John and Linda Parrish, was ably supported by our support crews and assistants. Notably Marg McVeagh, Janine Small, Julie Bate, Carole Inkster, Phil Taylor, Mel Zytecka and Ashley Owers who were out on the water for the duration of the event. Not forgetting Kim McMorran of course, for our brand new marks. After the relentless start sequence to get 44 races away in 4 divisions over three days (plus the 8 starts in the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race), there was silverware to award. Northern Premier 1 Teams End the Year On a High

- <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > A cold, wet NUHC Prem 1 Women’s team after their 5-6 playoff with Karori In an interesting twist, the Northern Premier 1 Men and Women’s teams have both ended their 2019 seasons ranked fifth equal. The Northern P1 Women, in their first year in the competition after possibly a 30 year hiatus, had an exceptional year under the guidance of coach David McNaughtan. With several wins under their belt in their first season, the women made their way into the 5-6th playoffs. In a match which was marred by torrential rain throughout, the Northern women fought to the end against Karori. The turf was underwater for most of the game, but with less than 10 minutes remaining, and with the scores tied 4-4, the rain became too heavy and the umpires called the game off. This left a very cold, wet, but relieved team fifth equal with Karori. The men’s competition was similarly affected by the weather, however it was the Saturday earlier that affected the men. Their penultimate match against Victoria University was unable to start due to heavy rain and hail that put the turf under several inches of water. The game was rescheduled for a midweek late night game. The disruption put pressure on both teams, with the match being the most stressful of the year for coach Jono Mackey and his team. A tit-for-tat scoreline kept the pressure on Northern, but the Northern strikers and excellent keeping by Cameron Loader kept them in the game. The Northern boys ended up triumphing 3-2 over the students, keeping them out of the relegation zone and putting them through to the 5-6 playoff. A death in the Wellington Indians hockey community unfortunately meant that the the 5-6 playoff against Wellington Indians Sports Club was unable to be played. Despite the unfortunate reason for cancellation, the Northern boys were relieved to end the year fifth equal. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > NUHC Premier 1 Men after their final match of the season against Victoria University.

- AMESBURY DRIVE SCHOOL ESTABLISHMENT BOARD OF TRUSTEESPO Box 13417 Johnsonville, Wellington 6440Media release7 June 2010Planning for new school in Churton Park well underwayAn Establishment Board of Trustees, appointed by the Minister of Education in November last year, was involved in the Ministry’s decision to contract a consortium headed by Maycroft Construction to design and build a second primary school for Churton Park in Amesbury Drive. Callum McKenzie of McKenzie-Higham is the architect for the project. The Board is an active participant in the design work for the new school.Excavations and drillings are taking place to confirm the best location to site buildings, car parking and playgrounds. The Board has erected a sign, sponsored by Tommy’s Real Estate, on the site to update progress and advertise any future community consultation meetings.A major focus for the Board over the next few months will be the recruitment of the foundation principal. Although the principal will not officially take up his or her position until April 2011, the Board hopes to make an appointment by the end of September so that the successful applicant can have input into the planning and decision making for the school which is due to be open at the start of the 2012 school year.Board Chair, Rory O’Connor, said that the Board has also been considering the name for the school. The current name, Amesbury Drive School, was adopted as a working name by the Ministry of Education in the planning stages for the school. The Board is in favour of using Amesbury School as the name for the school. During its deliberations the Board became aware of New Zealand links with the small town of Amesbury on the Salisbury Plain in England. In the First World War, both the Maori battalion and the Wellington regiment were in camps close to the town. “The Board is very interested to know what the community thinks of the suggestion to shorten the name to Amesbury School”, said Rory O’Connor. What’s happening? Farewell to Andrew Savage, Deputy Principal On Tuesday, we farewelled Andrew Savage who has been one of our Deputy Principals since 2012. Andrew leaves WHS to take up a post at the Teaching Council and their gain is most certainly WHS’s loss. Many staff took the opportunity to speak at Andrew’s farewell, recognising his many qualities and numerous contributions to WHS and enjoying musical contributions from Fritz Wollner and Andrew himself. Safer Internet Day #SID2019 – 5 February 2019 This week marked international Safer Internet Day 2019 so we thought we would share some new resources from Netsafe. You can book your learning conversation session(s) now by going to https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and using the correct code(s) for your student(s): Juniors Year 9-10: Code f7ajr Seniors Years 11-13: Code q63q Please note: The Learning Conversation is a conversation between the student, the student’s rōpū teacher and parent(s) / caregiver(s). Students will only be at school on Thursday 29 March for their learning conversation. Each learning conversation takes 20 minutes During the conversation, we invite students to think, and make judgements about, their learning. The teacher will help the student to lead the discussion and reflect on progress so far. Students will develop up to three goals that they would like to achieve through this year. 2017 Year Books The 2017 Yearbooks have now arrived in school and will be distributed next week to all students, staff and families who have already ordered copies. Unwell students We have had a steady stream of students coming to the sick bay this week, and there seems to be a virus/bug going around. Please keep your young person at home if they are unwell. This gives them time to recover and prevents the spread of illness around other students and staff. The day has been filled with assemblies, reminiscing, excitement, tears and sentiment. To all our seniors, we wish you all the best, whether you are sitting NCEA exams or joining the workforce, whether you are leaving us or returning to WHS in 2020. Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition The Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition is happening in the Art department, D block, Monday 4 November, 12pm – 5.45pm and Tuesday 4 November 9am-5pm. All welcome. Japan exchange students’ farewell Saaya Nakahara and Saki Sasakawa have been attending WHS since the end of August as part of their exchange from Osaki Kasei, WHS’s sister school in Japan. Below are some of the memories of their experience here. We arrived in NZ on August 30. We have had many experiences in just 2 months. We went to the Climate Change strike on 27 September. We have never been to a strike, so we were surprised that there were so many people. It was a good experience because we cannot join a big event like this in Sapporo. Our most exciting experience was the Ball. We do not have an event like this in Japan. This was the first time for us to go to a dance party. We took a lot of pictures with our friends in the photo booth. Our favourite photo was taken with our year 13 Japanese classmates and Grace. Thank you for giving us wonderful memories!!! Achievements NCEA Art folio exhibitions Folios were exhibited on two Fridays this term showcasing the enormous efforts students have put into their artmaking this year. Many friends parents and staff visited the exhibitions. Rowing regatta success WHS Rowing have completed in their first regatta of the season: the Queen’s cup regatta. The regatta was held over a 1000m course with all rowers competing to a high level despite the cold and windy conditions. The next race will be on 2 November and is the Norton Cup Regatta. Floorball Former WHS student Marie Sundin is transferring from Wellington Floorball Club to Swedish IBF Falun. Last month the International Floorball Federation picked Marie as one of the top three international transfers. Congratulations Marie!

It was a beautiful sunny day but the sun was quite low on the horizon making it difficult playing into it. There was no wind of any concern and the mercury struggled to get to double digits. Commentary coming to you from the scoreboard grandstand.John ‘JC’ Cable was kindly present to correct my errors.Notable performancesSam Coombs’ nose for the line has to earn him a spot on the list!Dale Sabbagh has become a true leader in the backline over the last few years and the team as a whole. His goalkicking was superb, he was always dangerous on the attack and precise on defence.Matt Fowler was very busy and must have been annoying for the Johnsonville forwards! His distribution was solid and his dabs around the side meant defenders had to stay on him rather than drifting out to the ball runners.It was good to see Reece Plumtree back at this level. He only had 2 or 3 runs but they counted.The whole front row deserves massive ups for a truly dominant performance.The locking combination of James and Taine together with Caleb on the flank gives some great height at the lineout and all three showed great skills and pace around the park while still doing the tight work when needed.How the game unfolded5 mins – OBU turnover a Johnsonville lineout the ball goes out to the left and back to the right a few times before Sam Coombs crashes over the line. Converted by Dale Sabbagh7-0 OBU lead11 mins – Johnsonville on the attack. OBU turns it over and Callum Harkin clears it downfield for Sam Reid to chase. Sam gets up to pressure well but with the naked eye, it looked like he was stepped and instinctively put the foot out which partially tripped the Johnsonville player. Clubrooms discussion afterwards reveals Sam says he went to kick the ball as the Johnsonville player picked it up. Either way, it doesn’t matter the ref calls him over to issue the yellow card.17 mins – OBU is camped on the Johnsonville line. After a few pick and goes Shamus Langton charges to the right side of the ruck and gets over but is held up.18 mins – From the resulting scrum Dale runs it around the outside of the defence and into the right-hand corner. The ref calls it back for a scrum to Johnsonville. I assume it was lost forward in the dive but the referees signal isn’t clear from my position.22 mins – OBU elects a scrum deep in Johnsonville territory after taking the penalty advantage. Caleb Delaney launches a big long cut-out pass to James Poloniati who steams in from about 35 meters to dot down in the corner. Conversion misses. The procedures they have developed allow us to respond safely and quickly to a range of circumstances and have been successfully implemented at schools across the country. Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April. The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email. The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond. If a decision is made to close school, for any reason, we will keep our year 9 and 10 students with us until a known adult can come and collect them from the school field. The only adults permitted to collect a student will be the caregivers and emergency contacts that we have recorded. We will only release our year 11, 12 and 13 students when it has been declared safe to do so. Please ensure that a discussion about safe routes to get home are part of your family plan. Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome, Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training. Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start. Match Report Rd 5 Swindale – OBU take the spoils against a determined Upper Hutt Rams

History tells us that you can never assume that you’ve beaten Upper Hutt until the final whistle. They certainly stuck with us in the first half and at half time we knew we were in a tight contest. Fortunately OBU had a strong bench and started to run away in the last quarter. Conditions The forecasters had told us it would be overcast and dry. It was overcast and wet with frequent showers throughout the match. It was cool but not bitterly cold. What little wind their was had little effect on the play. The surface was good, a bit sticky but firm with no pooling of water. OBU was playing from the Basin Reserve end in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable was kindly present to correct my errors again. Notable performances Dale once again ran the back-line magnificently and kicked well when the commentators curse wasn’t applied! Both halfbacks were a nuisance for Upper Hutt today with Kyle starting and Matt Fowler taking over around the 50 minute mark. We’re lucky to have 2 halfbacks of this calibre. The Plumtree boys both played well. Both delivered the last pass for the other to score late in the second half. Once again the whole front row deserves massive ups for a truly dominant performance. There is a danger this bullet point will remain for the whole season! The locking combination of James and Taine together was very physical at set piece and the breakdown. Both have also proved that they’re no slouches where the goal-line is concerned. The newer players in their first few games for OBU at this level are finding their feet and becoming worthy contributors. Lawry, Josh, Tiaki, Olly all performing well. Keep it up lads! Kenan Gillson also had a busy game chalking up the full 80 minutes and was part of an efficient and lineout and dominant scrum. Plenty of ruck & maul and defense too. How the game unfolded 2 mins There is an impressive lineout drive followed by some slick hands in the backs. The ball is moved to the left with a quick flick on to Sam Godwin who dives over, try! The conversion from wide is good OBU 7-0 8 mins Lineout penalty to Upper Hutt about 38 metres out in front. It drops short and is cleared 12 mins Upper Hutt take the lineout from a penalty and setup the drive. They then execute a cut move on the centre who goes through and scores it under the sticks. Easy conversion taken and scores are locked. 7-7 18 mins Fui heads to the sideline to get some cranial claret taken care of. Lawry takes the field but this week the fan club have a 30 second delay before the cheer for some reason! 20 mins Jack Green goes down in a heap near the left-hand touch about the 10m line after a move down the sideline. The referee shows no sympathy and continues with the next scrum back infield to leave Jack the indignity of the bum shuffle to get off the field! Oliver Paotonu replaces Jack for the rest of the game. It looks like it might be a hamstring injury. Hopefully it’s not too severe and Jack is back with the team soon. The Upper Hutt Far Side boys claim that it could only be a back with a hamstring injury as forwards think that’s something you roast on Sundays. 22 mins Good move to the right side of the field. The ref plays advantage for the Upper Hutt backs being offside. Knowing the advantage is there OBU kick for the corner but it just goes out in the corner before any scoreboard adjustments are needed. We come back for the penalty and elect to take the shot 22m out and handily placed to the middle. But just as we were banking on it we accidentally applied the commentators curse and the shot misses. 25 mins Fui comes back with a bandage that the 1980s would be proud of and Lawry takes a seat. 26 mins OBU takes the lineout from a penalty deep in Upper Hutt’s half. There are several pick and go’s on the Upper Hutt line with Sam Godwin among those having a good dig at the line until James Poloniati completes the move by crashing over to the right of the posts. Conversion successful. OBU 14-7 That’s the way it stayed until half time. 42 mins OBU are penalised for hands in the ruck. Upper Hutt take the shot in front about 30 meters out. Once again commentators curse strikes as it looks like an easy shot but misses. 45 mins The first lot of tactical subs come on – Shamus, Paddy and Morgan for his 50th on and Sam Coombs, Tiaki and Sam Godwin off. All those sitting down contributed well to the cause! 46 mins There is a frantic OBU attack with quick pick and go’s on the Upper Hutt line. Upper Hutt do well to repel the attack for now and it’s held up in goal. OBU feed to the scrum. 48 mins The OBU scrum marches the Rams back and Shamus takes the spoils from number 8. Conversion successful. Matt Fowler comes on for Kyle Preston. OBU 21-7 52 mins Upper Hutt fumble a lineout in their own half. It ends up with James Poloniati. From the resulting melee it comes out to Paddy Carter in the middle of the pitch who with horns locked bumps a Ram back on his backside ensuring the shorts will need a wash. He then runs it into the line with good pace and crashes over near the corner. The extras are added. OBU 28-7 53 mins Josh Gimblett gets a break on the bench after a hard working half. Matt Sleith gets a run on the side of the scrum. The kickoff ends up short so we have a scrum on halfway. There is some great play off the back of a solid scrum from Shamus and some clever interplay between Sam Reid and Reece but it breaks down. 65 mins Lawry comes on for Fui. There is then some good play from Upper Hutt giving themselves every chance but frustratingly for them the last pass goes to grass and dribbles over the sideline. 71 mins Upper Hutt penalised for holding on. The quick tap is taken and from the next phase Reece drops a nice inside ball to brother Taine who tracks it in to get the 5. Conversion misses. OBU 33-7 74 mins OBU break out of their own half with some fast work. OBU got in behind the defensive line a couple of times and it looked like Callum H would take it all the way for a second but just got caught. From the phase the ball is moved wide to the left and Taine returns the favour to brother Reece with the last pass leaving a run to the corner. Conversion drifts away. - This week on drama* on the waterfront, Colleen McColl, publicist for A Servant to Two Masters, delves into the commedia dell’arte style of theatre commedia dell’arte = ‘comedy of the profession’, ‘theatre of the professional’, ‘comedy of art’ One of the most interesting things about working as a publicist is delving into other various aspects of the production and finding out about things not previously known. A Servant to Two Masters offered me a wonderful chance to look more closely at commedia dell’arte. Google is a wonderful friend! It appears commedia dell'arte originated in streets and market places of Italy during the Italian Renaissance. Commedia was a hugely popular form of theatre with street performers. They offered improvised stories usually representing fixed social types, stock characters, such as foolish old men, mischievous servants and young lovers. Actors joined the company very often at a young age and in each production played one character – it became their specialty. They spent their whole careers with that same company. As they aged they would moved into other roles eventually ending up as the old master. It was known as a colourful and extremely theatrical art form which allowed improvised scenarios that facilitated a comic plot to arrive at a humorous climax, with a happy ending. The performers, who used masks with exaggerated comic features to draw additional attention to themselves and complement their physical and acrobatic skills, eventually teamed up in troupes of actors, often with a travelling stage, to firmly establish commedia as a genre in it's own right by the mid-1500s. They performed outside and relied on various props in place of extensive scenery. These "commedia troupes" performed for and were accessible to all social classes. Language was no barrier, with their skilful mime, stereotyped stock characters, traditional lazzi's (signature stunts, gags and pranks), masks, broad physical gestures, improvised dialogue and clowning they became widely accepted wherever they travelled. In later years, the tradition spread all over Europe, eventually adopting a major French influence where many of the scenarios were scripted into commedia-style plays. It is from the commedia world where such characters as Arlecchino (Harlequin), Columbine, Punchinello (Punch), The Doctor, The Captain and Pantalone emerged. It was fascinating to learn that during this period, commedia dell’arte was the only form of theatre where women were allowed on stage. A Servant to Two Masters was originally written in 1745 by Carlo Goldoni as part of the commedia dell’arte style of theatre which was still very popular at the time. He was commissioned to devise a play for a famous Harlequin. The story goes that Goldoni wrote it with a lot of room for improvisation (the scenario was pinned to the side of the stage), as was the tradition at that time, and then went away and left them to it. The production was a huge success but when he returned he was appalled by the indulgence of the actors. In a fit of pique he wrote down a text for the players to learn and thus dealt a fatal blow to the centuries-old tradition of commedia dell’arte. It was the birth of farce as we know it today. Award winning dramatist Lee Hall (The Pitmen Painters, Billy Elliot) has adapted Goldoni’s A Servant to Two Masters for our current production at Circa. He offers us a fabulous new, rapid fire version with the language updated to now to create a pacey, action-packed physical comedy. In light of my Google time travelling, I am astounded by Lee Hall’s ability to adapt and re-boot this timeless classic so that it is relevant, funny and highly entertaining to a contemporary audience. Sporting students staying motivated during Lockdown (Part 3)

- What does the lockdown mean for sporting students? How has it affected them and what are they doing to stay fit and motivated? Two more local sports students are Toby Cook (Wellington College), who spent the summer preparing to travel with his school’s rugby party to Argentina and Jacob Madigan (St Patrick’s College, Kilbirnie) who was winding up his summer sport and about to start his winter code. We asked them what they are doing during lockdown: Jacob Madigan in action for St Patricks Kilbirnie (Photo by Hamish Wareham) College Sport Wellington: Please tell us what you were preparing for before the Lockdown? Toby: As I was a part of the Wellington College touring rugby squad to Argentina, 30 of us boys had been training pretty hard from the end of last year. Although three weeks before the lockdown started we were informed the trip had been cancelled, we then shifted our focus to training for the regular season which is also currently at a standstill. Jacob: I was involved with the St Pats First XI cricket team and we were nearing the end of the season with only one game left plus a T20 tournament during summer tournament week. On that same weekend we had our first preseason First XI football games up in Palmerston North, which got cancelled CSW: what you are doing to keep fit and train? Toby: Our coaches and trainers from school have been great in sending out information so you can train no matter what equipment you have. My sister was also able to bring home an erg which is a welcome change from running. As well as trying to get a session in each day I’m also trying to keep up my basic skills. Jacob: Our football coach gave us a programme to do over the lockdown period which means hopefully we can be fit going into the season. I have also been doing some technical work for football and cricket in my back garden and at the park. CSW: Please share a lockdown sports practice or training tip for your school mates and others out there in the same situation? Toby: I normally try to complete my training in the morning as I find it gets it out of the way and sets you up for the rest of the day. Another thing I’ve found helpful is our trainer turned our sessions into a competition and we have to record and send in our training and time which keeps us accountable. Jacob: Keep doing something relating to your sport. It is hard in these times to keep motivated when you can’t actually go and train and play but if you keep doing fitness or technical work, then you will be good to go when the season comes. Also track your times of what you are doing and compare them to a friend and see who can do better as a bit of motivation. CSW: Are you in contact with your sporting friends about the above and are you motivating each other remotely? Toby: As above, the majority of the squad have been videoing and sending through their workouts to our chat. This has been great as it allows us to see what everyone else is doing to motivate each other, the videos also keep us accountable for the work we are doing. Jacob: Yes, I’ve been talking to the boys about how they are going and a few of them send me daily photos of them doing the exercises. Following story courtesy of College Sport Media Ava Sutherland (left), Amy McHardy (right) While most of the country sought shelter from the shivering weather on Saturday, Ava Sutherland and Amy McHardy of Wellington Girls’ College were in their element. The pair finished first and second in the Junior Girls’ National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships at the A&P Showgrounds in Hawera. Sutherland hadn’t beaten McHardy this year, but saved her best for the big stage. “Amy got in front before me. I was running and I was like ‘come on Amy, let’s go, we’re nearly there.’ I think I got a bit of adrenaline or something. I wasn’t expecting to win” Sutherland admitted. McHardy had led all the way. “We both like to take the start and it was a really fast start. We got to the front after about 600 meters. When there was 30-meters to go Ava said ‘well done’ and got past me. We work together, train together and bring out the best in each other. We managed to win the three-person and six-person team races as well which was awesome,” McHardy said. The final time for Sutherland was 11.25.50 with McHardy on 11.27.80. Gabrielle Healy (6th) and Kate McHardy (9th) ensured a Wellington Girls’ sweep of junior honours. A flat start was followed by a downhill section that narrowed out and a short, treacherous, hill climb due to the thick mud and driving rain. “It was really wet and muddy but that made it fun, a real cross country race, a real cool experience,” McHardy enthused. Louise Brabyn (Whanganui Collegiate) was seven seconds adrift in third place. “My favourite training course has eight river crossings and is really fun in the rain. I liked the course,” Sutherland concurred. Both girls are aligned with the Olympic Harriers club. They train and compete in a mixed environment on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Nairnville Park as well as racing most weekends. McHardy beat Sutherland for the Wellington Regional title, but both rely upon coach John Cope for their success. “He makes sure we enjoy it, but when it gets close to competition he challenges us and makes sure we’re putting in the grind,” McHardy said. McHardy first met Cope when she made the Wellington Interregional team while at intermediate. She was fifth in the 2019 Nationals in Timaru and has been the top junior runner in the capital. Sutherland’s parents are eager runners and their daughter got serious about it in 2018. “I had a long-time rival who kept beating me at intermediate. When I beat her the first time I continued to put a lot more effort into it, Sutherland revealed. The next big race on the calendar is the National Secondary Schools’ Road Race in Akaroa, Christchurch in October. On Sunday 4 May, we held our Course Planning Seminar, which was a resounding success! About 12 people came along and we were thrilled to see such strong participation from experienced orienteers and those newer to the sport. The seminar provided valuable insights into course design and use of Condes software that is used for mapping orienteering courses. A huge thank you to Dick Dinsdale for arranging this as well as our contingent of helpers, and all who attended! This seminar not only strengthened our collective knowledge but also helped build a more connected and engaged community. We’re already planning future educational events to continue this momentum. I encourage all of you to keep the conversation going and apply what you've learned at our upcoming events. Throughout May and June, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get outdoors, improve your skills, and continue to challenge yourself. North Island Secondary Schools Champs This year’s North Island Secondary Schools Champs was hosted by Counties Manukau Orienteering Club. Congratulations to Orienteering Wellington members Troy Thompson, Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan, who came second in the Year 12-13 Senior Boys relay. Morag McLellan also came fourth in Year 12-13 Senior Girls long distance champs, and fifth in the sprint. Supporting our members Orienteering Wellington has awarded a $750 travel grant to club members selected to represent New Zealand internationally at International Orienteering Federation events. Rachel Baker and Jake McLellan will be representing New Zealand at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Trentino, Italy, from June 26 to July 3, 2025, as has Morag McLellan at Brno, Czechia, from 17 – 20 July. Lizzie Ingham has been selected for the team attending the World Orienteering Champs in Kuopio, Finland, from 8 – 12 July. Jake McLellan, World-Class Orienteer and Mountain Man Orienteering Wellington member Jake McLellan won the fabled Tararua Mountain Race – Southern Crossing, a 36km mountain run from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Forks. It was an epic effort that saw Jake crossing the finish line in 7:08:08. Jake says: “The race kicked off fast, and I couldn’t stick with the early pace, so I settled into my own rhythm and made sure to save some gas for the back half. Just after Alpha Hut, I spotted the leaders a couple of minutes ahead — that gave me a real boost and helped me keep pushing across the tops. I made goodtime across the tops and caught up to Chester at Kime Hut. After Bridge Peak, I put the hammer down on the technical descent and managed to pull away. From there, it was just a fast hobble down from Field Hut to the finish. “I'm absolutely stoked to take the win at such an iconic event! It's an honour to have my name on the trophy alongside some legends of the sport.” Tips and Tricks To help you improve your orienteering skills this winter, here are a few tips from our experienced members: Stay on the trail: In challenging conditions, it’s often easier to follow a trail, path, or prominent feature rather than trying to cross open terrain. It will save you time and help you maintain orientation. Map reading in low visibility: If you're out in low-light conditions, try marking key features(like water bodies or trails) on your map before starting. This will help you stay oriented even when visibility is reduced. Check your compass often: Don’t rely on your compass just once at the start. Check it regularly to ensure you’re staying on course. Small errors in direction can add up to big detours! Practise regularly: Winter orienteering training doesn’t have to be outdoors. Use mapsin your local area to practice route planning, compass work, and even map-reading skills indoors. Familiarity with your map will pay off in the field. Development and events There’s a lot happening in the coming months. This Sunday sees us at Baring Head, followed by another event at Battle Hill on Sunday 8 June. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. Advanced entries close 11.59pm Saturday. We’re offering a practical training session at Karori Park on Sunday 15 June. You’ll get a chance to put your newfound skills to the test at Matariki, in the pine forest and sand dunes of Waikawa, north of Ōtaki. Further afield is the three-day King’s Birthday event in the Hawkes Bay. Entries close Thursday. Orienteering Bay of Plenty’s Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua is coming up on Saturday 26 July 2025 – a fun, team navigation challenge where you try to collect as many controls as you can in the time allowed. There are 3- and 6-hourevents that you can do on foot or mountain bike. It’s a great adventure for groups of friends and family. Entries close Tuesday 22 July. The campaign will support parents and caregivers to reduce the risks of online harm such as cyber-bullying, inappropriate content, pornography and grooming. Parents and caregivers can find information including tips on how to have conversations with their kids at www.keepitrealonline.govt.nz. What’s happening? The prefabs are here! In a much anticipated event, four prefab classrooms were lowered in to place on the school field last weekend. These four classrooms will provide more space on campus and will be important as the school moves through the master planning process. There is still some work to do onsite and we anticipate that they will be in use from the first day of Term 3. Outdoor Education This week Year 11 students have been out on the water to Makaro (Ward Island). Students participated in a beach clean up and spent time looking at the habitats of Little Blue Penguins. The fact that students were able to observe seals and penguins on the rocks and in the water was a real bonus. Art This week we share stunning landscapes painted by Ms Peters’ Year 10 Art class. Year 13 took advantage of the winter sun and fine colours to work outdoors. Āwhina Āwhina is our Thursday homework club which takes place in the Library every week. This popular, supportive environment is one where students can come for support with assignments and homework, thanks to the dedicated teachers who regularly give up their time after school each week. MyKindo As recently reported, the cafeteria has adopted the mykindo app to facilitate easy pre-order and contactless payment for food. To support those using the mykindo app, the attached guide provides information on the different methods you can use to top up your account. Achievements NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad Well done to Ruby Nicolson and Lias Morris who achieved marks which placed them in the top 10 in the NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad. Ruby and Lias are both in year 9. From the careers desk Virtual Careers Expo — 18-19 June Even in unusual times like these, our students still have important decisions to make about their futures. Next week, a number of NZ’s top providers come together to give you a Careers’ Expo experience, virtually! Attendees will have full access to the Virtual Expo Hall, where you can interact with exhibitors, ask questions, and access useful resources that will help you choose the right path. Measles Outbreak — Advice to schools As you are likely aware, there is a large and ongoing outbreak of measles in Christchurch, with 26 cases as at 14 March. Auckland and Dunedin now also have measles cases. While there are currently no reported cases in the greater Wellington region, people will move around NZ during the school holiday period of 13 – 28 April, which includes Easter (19 April –22 April), and ANZAC Day (25 April), and it is likely measles will spread. Accordingly, attached is an information sheet and FAQs regarding measles for primary, intermediate and secondary schools. Focus on Climate Change At the time of writing, a large number of our students are in town for the Climate Change Strike, part of a global movement of youth protest. In the build up to this, Wellington High’s Molly Doyle in Year 13, took part in a panel with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, the Green Party’s James Shaw, and student leaders from other schools. World Vision Youth Conference Stop Press: While many of our students have been out at the Strike4Climate this morning, four students have been representing WHS at the World Vision Youth Conference. Abishkar Palma, Emily Brooke, Liberty McIntyre-Reet, and Jack Davies have been learning and sharing their ideas and vision of how they can be change makers in our community. Talking Books with Jacinda Ardern Johanna Christ, Alex Buyck, Otis Brown and Em Flux attended a fundraiser for the Katherine Mansfield House and Garden on the evening of Wednesday 13 March to hear Jacinda Ardern talk about her love of books. The Prime Minister shared advice for teenagers, “Know yourself. Know when you are feeling fragile and get off social media. Don’t live life on a screen.” She also talked about the importance of reading saying, “In order to give children the gift of reading, we need to give parents and caregivers the gift of time.” The students came away feeling very lucky to have had the opportunity to attend the event. Farewell to Chrissy Laing We reluctantly said goodbye to Chrissy Laing on Thursday 14 March after four and a half years of outstanding service as our Gateway coordinator. Chrissy brought enormous positive energy to this important role and she will be greatly missed. Chrissy is embarking on a new journey much closer to home and we wish her well in her new role. French Club trip to view a French Film Festival On Thursday members of the French film club, joined with other French students in Wellington to view the view Au Bout des Doigts. Tongariro Crossing On Monday the GEO223 and ESS223 classes left for the long bus ride up to Tongariro. We journeyed up to the mountains and on Tuesday did the long 19.4km Tongariro Crossing. The 22 students and 3 staff made it over in just under 8 hours, some more adventurous students choosing to run the final 3km downhill. Everyone did a great job an had a great time, and the warm hot pools straight afterward were welcomed by us all. The weather was fantastic – a number of us were sporting pink noses by the afternoon. Thank you to Kerry Parker and Kyle West who accompanied and made it possible to do the Crossing for the first time in many years. Drama Camp Last week Year 13 Drama went on camp to Riversdale in the Wairarapa. The purpose of the camp was to have an extended rehearsal period for two upcoming performance assessments. While they were away students worked on their acting technique for an assessment which finished yesterday, and started drafting self-devised character-based solos for presentation in week 11 (9-11 April). JustSpeak lunchtime lecture The lunchtime lecture on Friday 8 March was delivered by Tania Sawiki Mead. Tania is the Director of JustSpeak: a movement of young people who are speaking up and speaking out about criminal justice, aspiring for a thriving Aotearoa. JustSpeak develops youth-led tools, resources, spaces and support to facilitate public conversation on criminal justice informed by evidence and experience. Thank you to the Library for hosting another fascinating talk, and to Kathryn Hutchinson for organizing the lecture and visit. Achievements Talented footballer and former WHS student featured in Sunday Star Times The Sunday Star Times on 10 March featured the story of former WHS student, Athman Othman. Athman is remembered by many of his teachers for his sporting talent and we were glad to read of his success on the field playing for Tasman United. Read the full article here. NZYPT – New Zealand Young Physicists’ Tournament take silver On the 9th March, two teams of WHS physicists competed in the Wellington regional heat of the 14th New Zealand Young Physicists’ Tournament (NZYPT). Held at Victoria University, the teams took part in science fights defending their research into seven pre-determined problems, and challenging that of their opponents. The team of Millie Rea, Sophie Mance and Khalid Adam are to be congratulated for finishing second. They will head to Auckland next weekend to take part in the national finals. Sport Futsal We have had another busy week sport wise. On Wednesday 13 March we had a Junior Boys and Senior Boys team compete in the College Sport Wellington Futsal Competition held at the ASB Sport Centre in Kilbirnie. The teams had a great day with some very close results. Big thanks goes to Mr Junca for coaching the boys. Junior vs St Patrick Town, 6-3 lost vs Hutt International, 4-2 lost (draw until last 3 minutes!) vs Hutt Valley High, 8-3 win vs Scots College, 4 all draw (excellent game!!!) vs Tawa College, 6-1 win Senior: vs Wellington College, 7 nil lost vs Aotea College, 2 all draw vs Hutt International, 7-3 lost vs St Patrick Town, 3-2 win vs Onslow College, 3 nil lost Regional Athletics On Thursday 14 March a team of six from Wellington High School competed in the College Sport Wellington Regional Athletics meet at Newtown Park. Competing were: Fynn Hutson Senior Boys High Jump Thomas Woodward Senior Boys 100m and 200m Liberty McIntyre-Reet Senior Girls 800m Tiopira Mulholland Intermediate Boys High Jump Ari Koed-Chang Intermediate Boys Long Jump Frankie Coup Junior Girls Javelin All athletes participated extremely well. Thomas reached the final of Senior Boys 100m and Frankie won the Junior Girls Javelin with a throw of 24.97m (which beats our school record). Netball Reminder: Junior and Senior Netball Trials take place on Saturday 16 March (tomorrow) and Saturday 23 March here at school in the Tindall Gym. Juniors 9.00-11.30am Seniors 1.00-3.30pm Players must bring the correct shoes and a drink bottle. If you cannot make both trial dates please let Ms McIntyre (Sports Office) know. Football Trials for all Junior Boys wishing to compete in the Junior Boys Football team take place on Tuesday 19 March from 3.30-5.00pm. Players must bring their football boots and correct clothing for the trials. Also on Tuesday 19th March, trials for Senior students (Year 11-13) wanting to compete in the 2nd and 3rd XI Football teams, should meet at Wakefield Park, Adelaide Road, Berhampore, from 3.45-5.00pm. This season we are holding a mass one-off 200m badge swim assessment on Sunday 30 October. All U10 - U14 athletes must attend. The 200m safety award must be refreshed each year. Maranui Nippers between the ages of 10-13 (as at 30 September) can be chosen as part of a team to attend this special event. Specific criteria must be met in order to be selected for this team: - High attendance levels at Nippers sessions. - High attendance level at Carnivals. - Good results achieved at carnivals. - Competent ocean swimmer in all conditions. - Competent board paddler in all conditions. - Enthusiastic and committed to surf sports. The aim is to develop our juniors to be ready to become the next generation of life guards, and carve a path for those who want to, step up, reach outside of their comfort zone, and set their personal challenge to take on some of the best grommies around NZ on the National stage at Oceans. This role is two-fold – (a) Registrations - manages and responds to registrations. Coordinates the registration of new and existing members. Tasks include - Assist in the organisation of ‘Open Day’ and ensure relevant information and gear is ready. Liaise with Patricia Kelly to ensure there are no gaps in enrolment and subscription administration with regard to the registration of members. Coordinate the registration of new and existing members. Advise Patricia. Ensure all club members are issued with a Hi-vis vest and Cap (U8’s and above), and a record is maintained. Ensure relevant information is kept on ‘hard file’ at the office. Ensure communication databases are current and accurate. Ensure relevant information is communicated to membership. Ensure all members are registered with SLSNZ. Set up google online forms for carnivals, pool champs, oceans, functions, etc Manage the SLSNZ registrations for carnivals – entering, co-ordination with coaches. Manage and respond to registrations. (b) Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March. Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail. You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; Undertake second hand clothing sales; Ensure clothing samples are available; and Assist with clothing orders when necessary. Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. Manage the 200m badge process. Being part of this team is a great way to meet clubbies. The process this season is for anyone who would like to help out, come along and help out as a volunteer for the event. If you like the feel of the job, we will schedule you for another 2 more events in which you will get some training, mentoring and eventually be signed off as an official! All U10 - U14 athletes must attend. The 200m safety award must be refreshed each year. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s). In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases. Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge. Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age. U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. If your child(ren) has completed the 200m swim a badge can be collected at sign-in at junior surf sessions on Sunday mornings. <!-- --> PARENTS / CAREGIVERS IN THE WATER U7 AGE GROUP is an age which, at Lyall Bay with its variable wave height and harsh conditions, is unable to be left to just the coaches and lifeguards. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required, If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note: Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. The more adults we have in the water the better. - Kia ora St John’s whānau, This Sunday Martyn Day will preach on the Bible passage Luke 1:26-38 – which is about the birth of Jesus being announced to Mary! We would normally hear this part of the Gospel story just before Christmas – what will Martyn draw out of this passage for us this Sunday? Students, staff and families from Aitken House at Scots College will join us for worship, with students leading parts of our worship. The burning bush is a symbol of Aitken House. Our children have their peer group time, going out part-way through the service (after the Sung Blessing). Our youth will stay in for the full service this Sunday. Over four weeks we will explore the practice of Care for Creation. This continues our emphasis of putting our faith into practice, and will focus on our desire for knowing God more through intentional practices, relationships, and experiences. We will be doing this as a community of all generations, starting with an intergenerational service on Sunday 23rd June. STUDENT STUDY SPACE A massive thank you to the big team of volunteers who were the ‘friendly face’ of us as a Church for students wanting a warm quiet space to study. Making this space available for the students in our city preparing for their exams was an experiment for us as part of our Vision to connect more with our neighbourhood – creating safe spaces to be, to belong, and to navigate the tough stuff. We continue to pray for those with exams, and that they may know the support of our community throughout the year, and for ‘all of life’. CHURCH CAMP We’re excited to let you know there's a church camp happening this year! It's at Paekakariki Holiday Park from Fri evening 20 Sept till Sunday 22 Sept. We’ll be aiming to keep costs down and you can choose to sleep in the lodge, pitch a tent or stay in an onsite cabin (more details will be available at a later stage.) Porirua City Council update Nathan explained that submissions have closed for the Plimmerton Farm development. The annual plan has been finalised, with a rates increase of 4.9%. PCC are in the early stages of sorting out the long term plan for next year. The district plan will be discussed at the Council meeting tomorrow night; this will be effective from the start of next year. All new builds will be required to have grey water tanks. There was some discussion about the next steps for the Plimmerton Farm development. Greater Wellington Regional Council update Jenny explained that there is low leakage in the water treatment pipes. There will be workshops run by DIA regarding the proposal for large scale water authorities. The Government is subsidising losses incurred as a result of making the trains and buses free during Lockdown. Jenny suggested individuals consider writing to the Minister of Transport to push for Transmission Gully to be finished promptly. GWRC are expecting a report in August on the feasibility of introducing water meters. Financial Main account: $5737.47Fundraising: $0.00 Payment of $621.25 was made to AON NZ for renewal of public liability insurance through to June 2021.Of the monies in the main account, $4263.05 is for the community garden, $588.45 is for Surfers Seat maintenance, and $425.80 is for He Ara Pukerua.Margaret proposed that the RA set up a secure Cloud account for ease of access and an accessible archive, so this knowledge is independent of any individual or office holder, with read-only for general access by the rest of the Committee. Motion: The Residents Association Committee nominate Nikky Winchester to be the fourth bank signatory – moved Kate Dreaver, seconded Mel Galletly, none opposed, carried. Action: Bill/Jon to discuss options for cloud storage.Motion:Action: Margaret/Nikky to discuss the process for adding Nikky to the list of signatories. Correspondence Received (date?) a letter from BNZ who are phasing out cheques by June 2021. Projects update Muri Platform building Iain confirmed with KiwiRail that the Committee would like to include some additional land in the lease. The updated lease has been signed and Iain expects to receive the copy shortly. Food forest/community garden Paul talked to Bill Inge about getting QR code plaques printed. It costs about $29 per plaque. He Ara Pukerua Brian informed the Committee that the group met via Zoom on a weekly basis during Lockdown. They have two major items to finish: the last bollard in the latest batch has been approved by Ngati Toa (Mt Welcome sign); and other signs are to go up shortly, including the ones at Muri Station. The timeline on the outside of the station building will be visible from the approach along the platform. The Muri Station platform building will be formally opened on Saturday 5 September at 10.30am, in conjunction with tours around the food forest, entertainment and refreshments. It will be 135 years since the railway arrived in Pukerua Bay. Action: Jon to create a page on the RA website. Community shed proposal There was some discussion about the naming of the proposal. It was agreed that it continue to be known as the “community shed”, and that it will be available to all members of the community. A MenzShed group may be established, and they will be able to use it at pre-arranged times, as will other community groups. Other business Kate reminded the Committee that the Hub was intending to do some research into loneliness, community connection and resilience. As a result of the village’s activities during the Covid-19 lockdown, Kate has written a proposal which has gone to Porirua Council. Iain and Kate have made further changes to the Village Planning survey. There will be a meeting on 25 July to discuss promotion and circulation of the survey. Margaret notified the Committee that there is a seat near the footbridge which is unnamed. Ernie Amey used to walk past it every day; and Kath Fowler was instrumental in getting the seat established. Margaret has spoken to PCC about putting a plaque on the seat to commemorate both of them. This will cost about $30. Action: Margaret to organise the plaque. Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Instrumental and vocal lessons update If your Junior student is interested in taking instrumental / vocal lessons but has not yet enrolled, please download the form from the Student Hub and hand in or email the completed form to Fritz Wollner Lessons will be reorganised for Terms 3 and 4. If students have not been attending regularly, they need to see Mr Wollner as soon as possible to ensure they do not lose their spot. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her. Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it. WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back. Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan. Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Open Evening: Business Studies Logo quiz winners Many thanks to all those students and whānau who entered the Logo quiz competition that ran at our recent open evening. The answers were: Air NZ, Disney, The Warehouse, Starbucks, Wellington HS, Te Papa, The Heart Foundation, Wellington City Council and Netflix. The winners were Toby, Tama, and Oscar. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

Harakeke Happenings in Term 2
- Amesbury Drive School Blog
- We have been a busy hub in Harakeke so far this term! We have been focusing on:*Art - completing portraits either in Picasso style or using foreshortening (optical illusion making some parts of our body look closer than others) *Performance - for our official school opening all students took part in at least one performance, with most students being involved in several, including street dance, guitar, tuned percussion, Chinese dance, World Cafe maths, library activities, singing and many more! We also performed a wide variety of items for our school concert after the official opening.*Creative electives - choosing from a range of activities such as creating dioramas and print making*Language learning: Te Reo Maori and Mandarin*Developing our understanding and performance of our powhiri ceremony *Maths and literacy learning*Music - tuned percussion, singing*Learning conferences: all students spent between 30-45 minutes with one of the Harakeke teachers talking through their three matrices (maths, reading, writing). This discussion then led to the creation of a personal learning treaty (PLT) for each student, including a series of goals chosen by the student, using their matrices to identify their next learning steps. Students then talked through the matrices and their PLT with their parent/s, and these documents have been shared with students and parents so that they can be continually viewed and updated. Now that our art unveiling and school opening ceremonies are behind us we can move into the more settled part of our term. The learning conferences and creation of PLTs have been extremely useful in helping to inform our planning for the rest of this term. Focus areas for Weeks 5-10:*Maths: Specific skills based work through workshops, Snappers and World Cafe Maths. For information on World Cafe Maths please see our Harakeke blog - scroll down a little way to find an explanation of it. Snapper maths involves short videos we are creating to explain specific skills. To view Snappers we have created thus far please see the ‘Snapper’ link at the top of our Harakeke blog. Our Snappers will not only be about maths skills, they will be created for all learning areas. We have just begun to create them, so there are only a few to begin with...watch this space! Maths will be personalised for all students with workshops, activities and snappers developed for groups of students needing specific instruction or skill development. We are currently spending time showing the students how to use their maths matrix and PLT to identify their next learning steps and then choose particular activities/websites/materials/textbooks to achieve their learning goal. Specific maths areas we will be focusing on: fractions, division and multiplication skills and strategies, problem posing and solving.Below is a collage of Snapper maths work: *Literacy: Matariki module - students are reading and analysing books and information about Matariki (Maori New Year). They share their learning in a variety of ways, including retelling the story orally and in written form. Students will then be researching a range of Maori legends explaining Matariki and presenting their learning in a variety of forms, culminating in a Harakeke video telling the story of Matariki, along with a range of legends. They will then be exploring and researching explanations of the Matariki stars from other countries and cultures. We are also developing our narrative writing skills, including giving and receiving feedback from peers. Students are practicing using their reading and writing matrices and their PLTs to ascertain the particular skills they need to focus on when reading and writing. Creative writing is also an ongoing task for all students. *Inquiry: Students are continuing with their inquiries from last term (such as creating lunch orders made for students by students, exploring 1-1 devices at school and ordering senior literacy resources). These inquiries will be completed by the end of Week 6, with proposals, where necessary, written and presented, and actions taken across the school. For Weeks 7-10 a variety of different inquiry work will then begin, including beginning a travel plan for the school (a group of students investigating how students travel to school, exploring how environmentally friendly our travel habits are to/from school and looking at any actions we can take to increase sustainable and environmentally friendly travel) and exploring our school and its features. Food tech: Amaria Picard will begin working with our school lunches inquiry group to start creating school lunches prepared and cooked by students one day a week. This module will include planning, costing, purchasing, storing and cooking the lunches. Amaria will work with this group for 5 weeks, and then she will start the same module with another group of students. All Yr 4-6 students will complete this food tech module with her by the end of the year. *Active learners: We will continue to focus on students becoming active, self-directed learners through developing their understanding and use of their matrices and PLTs to inform their learning choices. All students will be directed to continually access and use their matrices to ensure their focus is on their next learning steps in reading, writing and maths. Every Friday students spend an hour reflecting on their learning, reviewing their PLT goals and identifying what they have done to achieve their learning goals. They are also asked to inform teachers of the workshops, Snappers or 1-1 guidance they now need to achieve their learning goals.

Unfortunately, the orphanage burnt down (by an accidental fire) within 24 hours of our own recent bell tower/vestry fire. Unlike us, they did not have insurance, therefore, our offering this week will be donated towards rebuilding their orphanage. Thank you to those who have already given. This advent many people in our congregation are going to either walk or run 145 km's, and you are very welcome to join the challenge. It may surprise you to know that walking is considered an ancient spiritual practice for many people, in fact walking is mentioned 247 times in the bible. In proverbs 14:15 it tells us that “the prudent give thought to their steps” We have created a booklet in which people can record their daily km traveled. Miramar v BNU 1sts - 25th August 2013
- Brooklyn Northern United AFC
- 2pm, David Farrington Park We headed to David Farrington Park to play Miramar in the final game of the season. Following Saturday's results, we believed a solitary point would be enough to keep us clear of the relegation places. The game kicked off with the intensity of a cup final. The Brooklyn crowd were vocal in their support, the large travelling contingent of fans certainly made the lads feel 10 feet tall. The game was being played at a cracking pace: a strong Miramar side featuring former All White Campbell Banks and current Solomon Islands International Henry Fa'arodo, was being matched by the heroes in red and black. The first 30 minutes was fairly even. Both sides were spraying the ball around with confidence and great speed, the Miramar coach admitting the game was being played at Capital Premier standard. The deadlock was broken when Miramar smashed a volley from the top of the box after 32 minute s, a quality strike that left Zen no chance. Miramar doubled their lead 10 minutes later from a free kick, the Miramar player's run not being picked up, leaving him unmarked at the far post for an easy finish. 2-nil down and all to play for. BNU were awarded a penalty right on half time for a handball in the box. Paul Sanchez, who has been great from the penalty spot, strode forward with purpose, only to watch his shot go wide of the left hand upright. The score remained 2-nil to Miramar at half time. There was calm in the changing room, as we were creating a number of chances and our covering defence had prevented Miramar from testing Zen with shots on goal. We believed if we kept to our standards we could get back into the game. The next goal would be the most important of the match. The 2nd half started at the same pace as the first. We continued to press high up the pitch to prevent Miramar from getting into any kind of rhythm. Their increased ball speed certainly tested us and the class and experience of their players was stretching us right across the pitch. However, we were not giving up without a fight and were rewarded for our efforts when Paul Clune smashed home after 58 minutes to bring the score back to 2-1. This also bought the crowd back into the game, they had been fantastic throughout. Ben Goodwin, who had been introduced at half time, went close on two occasions shortly after, with almost identical shots from the edge of the area. His pace and direct style were causing problems for the Miramar back four. We were dealt a blow on 70 minutes when Campbell Banks finally got the better of Damian Gurnick, turning on the edge of the area, to beat Zen in the left hand bottom corner. 3-1 down, with 20 minutes to play. It was time to gamble and throw numbers forward. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain. 2 minutes later Banks was at it again, losing his marker and slotting his 2nd to make it 4-1 with 15 minutes to play. You would forgive BNU if heads dropped, but not with this team, the lads weren't prepared to throw in the towel, and in true BNU fashion they fought for every possession and continued to push forward. Tom Bisley and Ben Purser were introduced, giving us 4 strikers on the pitch for the final 15 minutes of the season. Tom Bisley went close, not once but twice, but unfortunately shot wide on both occasions. As we pressed forward, there were inevitably gaps left at the back and Banks completed his hat-trick with 3 minutes to play. Just to rub salt into the wound, Miramar scored a 6th with the last kick of the game. 6-1 the final score which in no way reflects how close the game was. As the lads left the pitch, and rightly applauded the large BNU crowd, our attention now turned to the Island Bay vs Seatoun match being played at Wakefield Park. A Seatoun win would see us clear of the bottom 2. We received update after update from our Chairman Martin Gray, who was finally able to phone through the result we had all been waiting for, 2-1 victory to Seatoun. Back in the Miramar clubrooms, there was a mix of cheer and relief as we believed we could now reflect on a season of highs and lows. Strong performances, in this our last game, from Captain Andy Cochrane, who was all industry and quality in the middle of the park, Damian Gurnick, who put his body on the line time and time again, and Man of the Match Simon Barker, who won everything in the air and reminded everyone of his undoubted talent. A special thanks to the crowd who really helped the lads dig deep right to the end. You guys were fantastic! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin Gray, Adam Brownie and the Committee for all of their support over the last 2 seasons. Special thanks needs to go to our physio Dan Sainsbury and my team manager Annie Bannister for all of their hard work and high standards set and maintained throughout the season. Finally, I would like to publicly thank the playing group for their contribution to the 2013 season. It has been a pleasure working with you all this year. You have represented this club in the best possible way, on and off the pitch. You all bought into the plan and genuinely wanted to play football the way it's meant to be played. Andy Cochrane and Simon Barker led the team each week with class and integrity. Without them, the task would have been so much harder. Thank you both. I look forward to seeing you all this weekend at the Prize Giving. Hopefully we can sit down over a beer and celebrate what has been an eventful season. Dene Bannister

With participation up, this is great evidence that our club is in a strong position. Although I've been on the Committee over the years since arriving in Wellington in 1988, I haven't yet had the honour of leading Orienteering Wellington. My focus at this time is ensuring your club maintains momentum with quality events and training, as we gear up to hosting Nationals in a year's time. We have now wrapped up our evening sprint series and are moving on to the classic-style events. Our two most recent events were at Tikara and Karori Park and have also been part of a College Sport Wellington(CSW) orienteering series. We are grateful to our partnership with Orienteering Hutt Valley in delivering the CSW championship events. In the meantime, I wish everybody heading to Nationals in Canterbury safe travels, and good orienteering! Beverley Holder President Training opportunities Course Planning Seminar If you are currently a course planner or controller, or are interested in these roles, then Orienteering Wellington has a session for you! Our half-day Course Planning Seminar will be a practical session with some tips and tricks on how to set good courses, how to use the course software, and additional compliance responsibilities for controllers. You will also get the chance to share ideas with others who are planning and controlling courses. When: Sunday 4 May Date 4th May Where: Johnsonville Community Centre Find out more and register your interest. Course Planning Seminar Practical training for developing orienteers On Sunday 15 June, we will host training aimed at skills for orange-level orienteers – either those currently running orange or yellow courses and who want to start preparing for the next level. The focus will be on moving away from “handrails” like tracks, fences and streams, as well as improving accuracy of navigation near the control site. The location isn’t confirmed but will be in Wellington. Weekly interval training is back! Lizzie Ingham is offering group interval training at 6pm Wednesdays. You’ll get to build fitness running along the flat, up hills, or maybe a mix—and doing intervals as a group is much more motivating than doing intervals on your own. The group typically meets at the upper Ōtari carpark on Wilton Road. Find out more. Dodge the line with your own dibber! A challenge of the growing number of events and participation is the queues at registration. Did you know that you can buy your own sport ident, register online – and bypass that registration queue! One vendor is Michael Wood, whose MapSport shop sells all sorts of orienteering gear, including SportIdents (dibbers). You’ll see him at most local events. All Societies need a new Constitution Why now? As an incorporated society, Orienteering Wellington must provide a new Constitution to comply with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. Any society that does not reregister by 5 April 2026 will cease to exist. The Act had not been reviewed since 1908 and the new Act is far more explicit regarding the Committee, expectations of officer, conflicts of interest and concerns and complaints. What is changing? Currently, our Committee quorum is five. Orienteering Wellington now proposes a minimum Committee size of five, with a majority quorum. The Committee would be supported by working parties to help carry out the Club’s operations. We’ve effectively used such arrangements for delivering major events, club events, design, and reviews. Lachlan, our secretary, has led a small team to draft a new Constitution. We ask that you now read the draft Constitution. Read the draft Constitution Next steps Send any thoughts you have to the Committee at secretary@wellingtonorienteering.org.nz by Sunday 4 May. The Committee will consider your feedback and distribute this to members, noting any revisions to the proposed draft Constitution. We will look to pass a confirmed Constitution at our club Winter Potluck at 30 Gurkha Crescent on Sunday 8 June. Nationals 2026 Once again, Orienteering Wellington is teaming up with nearby clubs Red Kiwis, Hutt Valley and Taranaki to offer the NZ Orienteering Champs (Nationals) in the lower North Island next Easter (3-6 April 2026). At the moment, Malcolm Ingham is identifying suitable areas to map and Paul Teesdale-Spittle is assembling a small technical committee for the event. But we need your help to make the event a success! If you're keen to get involved, let us know. In any case, mark it in your diary for next year. Mapping news Since November, we returned to Tikara Farmland, a relatively new map for us. You can see a map of mapped areas on our website. We’d like to hear your suggestions for new areas to map. Northern United Rugby Football Club
- Northern United Rugby Football Club Inc was established in 1990 as a result of the amalgamation of the Porirua and Titahi Bay Rugby Football Clubs after their 1989 season. Northern United RFC is known as ‘Norths’ within the Wellington Rugby Football Union. The initial playing strip was the Porirua Rugby Club jersey with the Titahi Bay Rugby Club shorts and socks but in 1990 the official blue and white playing strip was introduced, which remains prominent 30 years on.

- After more than 30 years of working closely alongside whānau and hapori (communities) in Porirua, the Hutt Valley and Wellington, we at Wesley have learnt first-hand that with the right support, sustainable responses to complex issues can be driven by hapori themselves. We’ve been working out, as a community organization, what our part is in sparking the local community economic systems that truly value what makes people’s lives better. Wellington City Rural Fire Force
- The Wellington Regional Council formed the WCRFF in 1993. Originally the Force shared residence with the Wellington Free Ambulance at Newtown. The Force moved to its’ own station in Burma Road Johnsonville, in December 1999 and stayed there for 3 ½ years. As the crew numbers increased and the purchase of the tanker the Wellington City Council moved our location to Tawa Depot on the 12th July 2003. Our current station gives us the opportunity to increase our crew numbers to our desired benchmark of 30 as well as housing our entire fleet, which currently consists of 6 vehicles, 4 trailers and a Communication Caravan.
