      • Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? This Sunday we will consider where we find ourselves – how do we measure up with what we want? – and how can we prepare ourselves for what is just ahead of us? See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

The scheme, funded by the NZTA Community Road Safety Fund and the Ministry of Social Development, beginning 1 June 2019, will enable young people on benefits or in care to access free driving lessons and tests.   “A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. This is exciting news for Partners Porirua as a Youth Service provider, running its own Drive 4 Life programme since 2007.  Partners Porirua also facilitate a Community Driver Mentor Programme enabling disadvantaged youth to practise their driving skills with fully licensed adult driving mentors. “The announcement means Partners Porirua can assist more of our most vulnerable young people to get their driver licence, and increase their employment prospects and independence,” said Executive Director Michelle Robinson. • The Dead C are coming to town
      • I wouldn't wanna put money on it or anything, but I'm pretty sure that the last time legendary NZ noise-rockers The Dead C (wikipedia) played in Wellington was when they supported Sonic Youth on their Dirty tour in 1993. And to be frank, with an utterly transcendant performance in the face of much tribulation, mopped the floor with them. Now they're playing at the City Gallery on Saturday night. It's free. What the hell else do you need to know?

    • Phoenix: Warm-up Match Moved Again
      • The first Wellington Phoenix home pre-season game has been moved for the second time. Originally announced for the Basin Reserve, at some point it was switched to Newtown Park and now, according to the official site it has been moved to Westpac Stadium due to “concerns that Newtown Park would not have the capacity to cope with the big crowd expected.” Sunday at 2.00pm is kick-off time and the tickets are only $10 (and free for under 16s).

    • Laying a campaign trail
      • I am afraid that I have become caught up in my electioneering – such that I have now committed myself to walking every street in the Southern Ward, dropping a calling card in every letter box, and talking in an open and friendly way to those fellow citizens who are out and about. Since I am largely a house husband at present and the boys are at school, my week-day mornings are pretty much free. So the map is a report back on progress so far.

    • Wgtn Car Ban Talk
      • Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast today called for private cars to be banned from the Golden Mile within 10 to 20 years, following planned developments such as opening Manners Mall to buses, overhauling roads near the Basin Reserve and building a second Mt Victoria Tunnel And the Greens say they support the proposal to make the Golden Mile car free with only public transport, but said Wellington should give priority to light rail and pedestrian space in the Golden Mile now, not in 10 to 20 years.

    • Take 10 Arvo’s are now in Johnsonville!
      • We are now on week four in Johnsonville and although we had a few rangatahi visit, it still wasn’t pumping so we decided to put on a free sausage sizzle last Friday. In preparation, we handed out flyers to schools in the area and mustered up a bunch of students from around Johnsonville. We cooked roughly 100 sausages and it is safe to say they were all given to happy folks passing by the Collective Community Hub (CCH). We had Tony and Dan from CCH on the BBQ who were fantastic local assets, as well as our Take 10 volunteer team. We were thrilled at the success of the sausage sizzle so stay tuned for future BBQs!

    • Farewell Pānui Te Motu Kairangi
      • After careful consideration, the team behind Pānui Te Motu Kairangi – the Miramar Peninsula Newsletter – has decided to end on a high note, announcing that the lucky 13th edition, published in Spring this year, will be the last. Since its first edition in December 2020, around 50,000 copies of this printed community newsletter have been hand-delivered to peninsula letterboxes. Pānui shared local events and stories and reflected the diversity of the Miramar, Seatoun and Strathmore Park communities. Pānui was a collaboration between the Miramar and Maupuia Community Centre, Seatoun Village Hall and Strathmore Park Community Centres. The publication team was committed to Pānui remaining largely advertisement-free and says that the decision not to continue it was due to the ongoing pressures to fund it.

    • Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s
      • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.
