    • When Road Cycling is Illegal
      • Following my recent post on fixing cyclist infrastructure, I received a reply that questioned the rationale of pushing cyclists into pedestrian space: @sustwelltrans Lets make roads that work for all vehicles - Arras underpass should have bikes ok - leave #footpaths for #pedetrians — Ellen Blake (@Windynell) April 05, 2015 Since I didn’t know how or why cyclist restrictions happen, I emailed WCC to ask. Cyclists can use all roads except for motorways, lanes reserved for Buses Only, pedestrian malls, and some tunnels.  Cyclists are banned from these places due to safety concerns which derive from conflicts very high volumes of other users who have been formally given exclusive priority.  Cyclists may use all normal Bus Lanes, but not Bus Only lanes. Motorways in Wellington City area are: State Highway 1 from the Karo/Willis intersection to Ngauranga State Highway 1 from Johnsonville to Porirua Bus Only lanes are: Throndon Quay southbound centre lane into Lambton Interchange Lambton Quay from Bunny St to Whitmore St (Lambton Interchange site) Lambton Quay southbound from Brandon St to Featherston St Hunter St-Customhouse Quay-Willis St southbound from Featherston St to Manners St Manners St from Willis St to Cuba St both directions Pedestrian Malls are: Cuba St from Ghuznee St to Manners St Tunnels where cyclists are banned are: Arras Tunnel (State Highway 1) Mt Victoria Tunnel road lanes (State Highway 1) Hataitai Bus Tunnel. I’m sure that there are plenty of points that could be contested within that list, but I’ll only touch on a couple. For the road tunnels, the conditions of the road are identical to normal urban roads, with the exception of ventilation and lighting. It’s not clear how or why the Arras and Mt Victoria tunnels would create an actual safety risk beyond that of normal urban cycling. If there is some exceptional risk, wouldn’t it be better to educate the motorists that cause the risk? The decisions are the responsibility of the appropriate Road Controlling Authority.  For all urban roads Wellington City Council is the RCA, for the entire state highway network it is the New Zealand Transport Agency.  The timing of decisions result from safety and management reviews on an as required basis. Both tunnels are part of SH1 and fall under NZTA’s authority. I’ve just sent an OIA request for justification of the exclusion. They have until May 15 to respond.

      • CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home, a Live-Streamed Musical Happening Wellington festival set to unite the community through virtual music festival   Following the cancellation of CubaDupa, the festival team have been working on a remedy—a virtual way to celebrate the creativity and community that would have taken over Cuba Street on the 28th and 29th March, with over 1500 artists and 450 performances throughout Wellington’s favourite precinct. And so, Go Home Stay Home – a live-streamed virtual festival has been arranged to keep you smiling through week four of lockdown with a selection of the CubaDupa 2020 artists. Festival Director Gerry Paul says “This is a way of keeping the CubaDupa fire burning until we next hit the streets. And it’s a time when the creativity and talent of our artists are playing such an important part in keeping us sane and inspired – so tune in and come together in solidarity – he waka eke noa!” The programme for Go Home Stay Home may be on a micro scale compared to the monumental street festival, but you can expect it to be bursting with the same energy and vibrancy CubaDupa is known for.    On Saturday 18 April from 5 pm, settle in for an evening of sweet tunes from fresh local artists alongside well-loved homegrown acts, streaming live on the CubaDupa Facebook page. Auckland alt-pop-rock band Ha the Unclear will join us from the comfort of their bubble, along with Miss June who will treat the audience to a solo set—a rare occurrence for the noisy, energetic punk rock four-piece. After a two year stint in London, Wellington rapper Name UL is back, along with the always engaging Same Name Confusion, synth-maestro Dayle Jellyman, dream pop songwriter Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and rising alt-pop artist RIIKI. Usually a band of seven musicians, Dr Reknaw will present a special stripped back solo set, and Maori world-roots performer Māmā Mihirangi will also perform solo. The Ping Pong Party People will wrap up the night with a 90s trance party that’ll scratch your dancing itch. A special thanks goes to WellingtonNZ and the Wellington City Council for their support on this initiative and making Go Home Stay Home possible. CubaDupa is encouraging viewers to donate to MusicHelps, the New Zealand charity that provides vital support to members of the New Zealand music community in times of illness, distress and hardship. There will be a donate button on the Go Home Stay Home live stream for viewers to contribute to MusicHelps.       • Round 1 is done and dusted for the W League team, and we’ve gone through unbeaten, and very pleased to be 5 points clear from our closest rivals Wellington Utd & Palmy North Marist. The last two games of the round saw us face a strengthened Wairarapa at home. We knew this wouldn’t be the same team that allowed us to beat them 20-0 in the Kelly Cup, and we were right. Wairarapa came out to compete, and their shape, compactness and tireless efforts meant we were finding them hard to break down.

    • DIAMONDS MADE TO WORK HARD FOR WIN - WELLINGTON UNITED
      • Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015. It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.

      • ollowing a Greater Wellington Regional Council meeting today, Metlink has been given the go ahead to implement the Government’s Community Connect Scheme which will see discounted fares for Community Services Card (CSC) holders in place from 1 September. The Community Connect Scheme was announced by the Government during the Budget in May. Councillor Roger Blakeley, chair of Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee and a strong supporter of the Community Connect Scheme at the Council meeting, said it was fantastic to see the Government actively support community members most in need across the region.

"I had to get out in the sun but I saw Rikki Herbert there so we were both obviously thinking the same thing" said Hall "that it was a good chance to grab a beer and peruse the skills of some of the best outdoor players in New Zealand. Hall said the only problem was Wellington returned to their previous form and got hammered by 5 - 1.

      • The Thistle Inn was built in 1840. she is the oldest hotel in NZ still trading from the original site. In July 1866 she was burnt to the ground but by December the same year she was back operating. You will see the original beer cellar through the glass floor. She is a Category 1 historic place building and was completely restored in 2004 (as close as possible to how she was in 1866).
