• • Newtown group to protest against funding cut to local health care service

    • In a classic case of David versus Goliath, concerned members of the Newtown community will protest the quarter million funding cut to the Newtown Union Health Service on Friday. NUHS has been told by the Capital and Coast District Health Board that it will lose $274,000 in funding from July 1. The frontline primary health care service caters to South Wellington’s most vulnerable communities, looking after people who have difficulty accessing appropriate and affordable health care due to socio-economic deprivation and language barriers.

    • Welcome back to term 3. It was lovely to see all the smiling faces as students arrived at school yesterday. I hope everyone managed to enjoy their holidays and have begun the term feeling refreshed and ready for a HUGE term of learning. We are excited about this term. Our student achievement data from terms 1 and 2 is looking pretty good. However, as a staff, we met yesterday to discuss how we can continue to improve the achievement of our students over the next two terms.

• • When Road Cycling is Illegal

    • Following my recent post on fixing cyclist infrastructure, I received a reply that questioned the rationale of pushing cyclists into pedestrian space: @sustwelltrans Lets make roads that work for all vehicles - Arras underpass should have bikes ok - leave #footpaths for #pedetrians — Ellen Blake (@Windynell) April 05, 2015 Since I didn’t know how or why cyclist restrictions happen, I emailed WCC to ask. Cyclists can use all roads except for motorways, lanes reserved for Buses Only, pedestrian malls, and some tunnels.  Cyclists are banned from these places due to safety concerns which derive from conflicts very high volumes of other users who have been formally given exclusive priority.  Cyclists may use all normal Bus Lanes, but not Bus Only lanes. Motorways in Wellington City area are: State Highway 1 from the Karo/Willis intersection to Ngauranga State Highway 1 from Johnsonville to Porirua Bus Only lanes are: Throndon Quay southbound centre lane into Lambton Interchange Lambton Quay from Bunny St to Whitmore St (Lambton Interchange site) Lambton Quay southbound from Brandon St to Featherston St Hunter St-Customhouse Quay-Willis St southbound from Featherston St to Manners St Manners St from Willis St to Cuba St both directions Pedestrian Malls are: Cuba St from Ghuznee St to Manners St Tunnels where cyclists are banned are: Arras Tunnel (State Highway 1) Mt Victoria Tunnel road lanes (State Highway 1) Hataitai Bus Tunnel. I’m sure that there are plenty of points that could be contested within that list, but I’ll only touch on a couple. For the road tunnels, the conditions of the road are identical to normal urban roads, with the exception of ventilation and lighting. It’s not clear how or why the Arras and Mt Victoria tunnels would create an actual safety risk beyond that of normal urban cycling. If there is some exceptional risk, wouldn’t it be better to educate the motorists that cause the risk? The decisions are the responsibility of the appropriate Road Controlling Authority.  For all urban roads Wellington City Council is the RCA, for the entire state highway network it is the New Zealand Transport Agency.  The timing of decisions result from safety and management reviews on an as required basis. Both tunnels are part of SH1 and fall under NZTA’s authority. I’ve just sent an OIA request for justification of the exclusion. They have until May 15 to respond.

We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time!     • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall today took advantage of the lack of any decent televised football and took himself to watch Team Wellington play Waitakere at Newtown Park. "I had to get out in the sun but I saw Rikki Herbert there so we were both obviously thinking the same thing" said Hall "that it was a good chance to grab a beer and peruse the skills of some of the best outdoor players in New Zealand. Hall said the only problem was Wellington returned to their previous form and got hammered by 5 - 1.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 13:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  8 Vessel Pelous Lass was well down in the water at the pole moorings on the way to Onepoto.  The Harbour Master said the owner required assistance to pump out vessel.  5000 litres of water was pumped and vessel was left floating evenly in the water.     • Round 1 is done and dusted for the W League team, and we’ve gone through unbeaten, and very pleased to be 5 points clear from our closest rivals Wellington Utd & Palmy North Marist. The last two games of the round saw us face a strengthened Wairarapa at home. We knew this wouldn’t be the same team that allowed us to beat them 20-0 in the Kelly Cup, and we were right. Wairarapa came out to compete, and their shape, compactness and tireless efforts meant we were finding them hard to break down.

    • Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015. It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.
