    • William (Chick) Hillock 11/09/1919 - 18/04/2013
      • This morning’s Dominion Post sadly advises of the death of one of Star Boating Club’s true legends, William (Bill) (Chick) Hillock. Chick, as we knew him, had an active career with the Club commencing in 1931 when he joined as a coxswain with the crew stroked by the legendary G C (George) Cooke, who was stroke of the New Zealand Eight which competed in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In 1938 Chick became an active oarsman and amazingly, the Club records status regatta wins 19 years later in the 1956-57 season, in the Senior Double Sculls at Christchurch and Wellington, the Senior Pairs at Whakatane, Picton and Wellington and Senior Eights at Picton. History shows that he proved himself as the Club’s most capable oarsman after Cooke’s death. Chick was Club Captain 1947/48 and 52/53, Deputy Captain 1946 and 1953, and Secretary 1959/60. The Annual Report for the 1961/62 season records thanks for his assistance with clubhouse repairs. If I recall correctly, the major project that year was the replacement of the Club’s malthoid roof and Chick’s plumbing experience proved most helpful.  It can be said without argument that Chick’s active association with the Club, of over 30 years has   established a record that will never be beaten. Until only last year Chick regularly attended our Legends’ Wellington luncheons and will be remembered for his oratory recalling rowing and wartime experiences. William (Chick) Hillock was another of the Club’s “Outstanding Personalities” and should take his place with those honoured in Frank Scott’s “One Hundred Years of Rowing” written for the Club Centennial in 1966. • 10x10 2012 Results
      • A new men's record was set on the 10x10 today. The 10km erg, followed by 10km run was won by Star master's squad member Andrew Crosland. Andrew put in a good erg time of 36:21.8 before completing the race in a time of 1:16:59. The women's race was won by newcomer to rowing, Josie Askin. Josie didn't set the world on fire with her erg time, but was able to power past a lot of the contestants on the running section. • 2011 End of Winter 10x10
      • The 3rd annual end of winter 10km erg and 10km run took place today. Plenty of competitors took part part in the men's division, but only 1 woman took part; however Bex Sharratt, a new rower from Wellington R.C. did very well with a time that would have placed her 7th overall. Only one of last year's winners took part - Michael Tong, who still came a respectable 6th, despite having done no rowing training all winter. Cam Forsyth won the event, just edging out Michael Abernethy in the final sprint by the club house. Gary Ward was the first masters rower home and took 3rd overall, while Josh Roughan posted the fastest erg time of 36:48.6 There were no records broken this year, but most competitors enjoyed themselves. The event was followed by a bbq and prize-giving. Hopefully there will be more female competitors next year! • Star Rowers Rate on World Stage
      • Congratulations to Georgina Rodie and Linda Matthews on their international honours recently. Georgina had multiple wins in the Youth Cup in Australia, while Linda picked up a silver with the NZ eight at the very competitive U23 world champs in the Netherlands.

    • Star Prizegiving
      • Star Boating Club prizegiving is this Thursday 30th June. Given the success of the school rowers at NISS and Maadi last season, it should make for a good night.

    • National Champs 2011
      • The NZ national club champs for 2011 was the first regatta to actually complete all its races on an unusually windy Lake Ruataniwha this season. Star sent a small Women's club squad, as well as being represented in the higher grades by our RPC rowers. The RPC rowers wearing the blue and white hoops had some great racing. Geo Rodie and Linda Matthews helped Central RPC to win the U21 4x, while Linda also gained silver in the Premier 4- and 8+ in some competitive races. Joe Trappit also picked up a silver in the U21 4x and Premier 8+ Sophie Mackenzie, Robyn Munro, and Star's Geo Rodie and Linda Matthews, U21 Quad winners. Linda Matthews also gained a trial for the squad. Congratulations to Geo, Joe and Linda.

    • Cambridge Town Cup 2011
      • Star crews had some good wins at the 3 day Cambridge Town Cup at Lake Karapiro last weekend. The lake itself was partially drained on Friday and Saturday and Saturday morning in preparation for a heavy downpour. (it rained solidly Fri night/Sat morning) This produced some interesting sites, such as lane one not even fully submerged, and crews running aground just after the finish.  Many crews made A and B finals, with wins in both. Notable results were: Jess Paton and Tayler Gall won the U18 double Tayler Gall and Charlotte Reinhardt won the U18 pair Jess Paton, Philippa Loveard, Charlotte Reinhardt and Tayler Gall, coxed by Emily Barker came 2nd U18 coxed four Jackie Kiddle, Philippa Loveard, Emily Mather and Phoebe Christensen coxed by Emily Barker came 2nd U17 coxed quad Jackie Kiddle came 2nd in the U17 single Ruby Tew and Meg Taylor-Smith came 3rd in the U17 double Lillias Henderson, Christina Neil, Alex Ware and Lucy Saunders, coxed by Jasmine Hales came 3rd U16 coxed quad The next regatta is the Wellington Champs this weekend.

    • Noel Lynch
      • Star Boating Club was saddend to hear of the passing of Noel Lynch last weekend. Noel's contribution to Wellington and NZ rowing over many decades has been huge. Given the average age of the Star membership at the moment, it may not be widely known down at the club that Noel also had a major role at Star over many years - especially in school rowing (Rongotai College, Wellington College and Scots College in particular) his crews have given Star have many successes over the years. More to follow on the many acheivements and stories of Noel, but for now our thoughts are with his family.

    • Redding Shield 2010
      • Redding Shield, the season opener, was held a week later than scheduled on a shortened  Korokoro course. This regatta is usually held in town on the Lambton harbour course, but with all the work on the new wharewaka taking place in town, the makeshift pontoon there would not accommodate the number of crews that would need to boat. Star had wins in the Men's and Women's club 8, and the Women's open double. There were many second and third places, but they weren't enough for the club to retain the Redding Shield - won by Petone R. C.

    • End of Winter 10x10 2010 Results
      • The end of winter "10x10" challenge, which consists of a 10 kilometre erg followed by a 10 kilometre run has become an annual event, after it was staged for the 2nd time today (Aug 29th) Despite the rain, conditions were much calmer this year. Good times were expected, and Melissa Bray of the Star masters squad managed to shave off over 4 minutes from the best women's time of 2009. With last year's winner Paul Ward off recovering from surgery, no records were broken in the men's event; however Mike Tong and Stu Hancock of the Wellington College squad finished within a minute or two of the magic 80 minute mark to take 1st and 2nd respectively. The women started first, as they did last year, and despite most of the men starting 35 min's later there was still an overlap. Erg times were measured this year as well, to give an idea of how fast the run was. • Motorway Marathon
      • Sunday morning saw the Motorway "Marathon" held for the 2nd year running. Readers from out of Wellington may wonder what the significance of that is - it's difficult finding a day to row a 7.6km race on Wellington harbour. The Wellington College crew managed to defend the Bishop Owen Oar by winning the schools' eights race. In the Mothes Shield (the club fours/quads race), the race organisers were the ultimate winners of the day, as there were no prognostics calculated. This meant that a men's coxless quad was almost guaranteed victory, and this was the case with Petone taking the shield. Using the times provided by rowit.co.nz and the Sykes on-line prognostic calculator, Wellington College, rowing as Star 1 have the right to complain. • World Champs Selection
      • Congratulations to Linda Matthews on her selection in the quad at the Karapiro regatta later this year. The club was lucky enough to hear Linda speak at the Star prize-giving ceremony earlier this year, where she was presented with her red coat. Her brief speech about her entry into elite rowing probably had more resonance with the audience than any other speech that evening. Former Star members Louise Trappit and Peter Taylor have also confirmed their places at the highest level.

    • Manawatu Grunt
      • Conditions at the Manawatu Grunt this year were much better than last year. The sun was out, there was not as much mud, and there seemed to be fewer cow pats!   Sunny conditions on the Manawatu The first of the crews to appear on the home straight were an hour after the official start time of 10am – indicating strong currents on the way up to the start. Other than the currents, the effluent and the occasional log – the water was fine.   The Star women’s quad of Blackmore, Boyle, Morgan and Gilbert-Milne was the fastest female crew of the event, and the only Star crew in the top 10 based on prognostic times. The junior men’s quad of Scott, Tong, Newton and Robinson was the fastest of the Star crews to come down the course.   Star Crew Results: (Full Results can be found on Rowit)   Place Boat Crew Time Prognostic 9 W4x Sarah Blackmore, Ronnie Morgan, Nyra Boyle, Amelia Gilbert-Milne 00:26:48 85.13% 11 M4x Ben Scott, Michael Tong, Zac Newton, David Robinson 00:24:49 83.87% 12 Mixed 2x Rees Ward, Emily Wilson 00:27:53 82.53% 16 Junior 4x Phoebe Christensen, Christina Neil, Alex Ware, Jackie Kiddle, Emily Barker 00:29:13 80.65% 18 M8+ Lewis Richards, Sebastian Pios, Max Butchers, Michael Abernethy, Angus Hancock, Tim Saunders, Cameron Forsyth, Brook Walker, Harry Fenwiche (cox) 00:25:50 74.90%   The boys take the direct route to the riverJunior men's quadJunior men's eight (and Lewis)Junior women's quadMixed doubleWomen's quad

    • Petone Solstice
      • What better time to do a long distance race than right in the middle of winter! Petone Solstice - Star's first race of the season. With Wellington harbour conditions looking perfect, something had to give... The rain. It kept on giving, ensuring everyone was thoroughly drenched. With the coach thinking the race was on at 9am, everyone assembled outside the boatshed at 7:30am for a ride to Petone. Two hours later Star pushed off from the Korokoro beach to head for the Petone Rowing club Star on the left row down to Petone Rowing Club with Wellington R.C. Upon arrival at Petone RC, there was a lot of milling around before Greg of Petone R.C. explained the rules, To the mouth of the Hutt twice, with a "Le Mans Style" start - the competitors (Aramoho, Petone, Porirua, Star and Wellington) looked eagerGreg Stothers of Petone R.C. gives a briefing to the competitors There was more waiting. The competitors were getting anxious. Then finally....Finally about to start They're off!  Petone were away first, but Aramoho won the eventAt least Clara was ready Star did not get the best of starts, nor was the intensity high - but at this stage of the season, everyone deserves credit for participating in cold, wet conditions, and finishing an almost 10k race.

    • Star AGM
      • Notice is hereby given that the 2010 Annual General Meeting of the Star Boating Club (Incorporated) will be held at The Boatshed on Tuesday, 22 June 2010 at 7pm.

    • Star Prizegiving 10th June
      • Star Boating Club's annual prizegiving ceremony will take place on the 10th of June this year. This is a chance for club members to celebrate the acheivements of the last season. High on that list of acheivements will be those of QMC squad members Meg Taylor-Smith and Ruby Tew, who won the U16 double at NISS and came third in the same event at Maadi.
