    • Promotion
      • The R1 men have earned themselves a spot in the Premier 3 competition after a thrilling 3 - 1 win over Harbour City in a promotion match on the 2nd of May.  This is the first time in over 10 years that the club has fielded 2 men's teams in premier grades so it's very exciting for the club and the team to have been successful in this endeavor.

    • Man down!
      • Ash Roper, a dearly beloved member of the Hockey Club (we have to say that because he's a life member, it's somewhere in the constitution or something), has busted his ankle on his comeback for the R3 Men today. All the best Ash, we hope to see you up and again soon.

    • Umpiring
      • Following the successful umpiring regime of 2014 a largely unchanged regime will be used again in 2015.  To jog your memory, Naenae Hockey Club requires all members to be available to umpire games in grades below theirs from time to time. Generally this duty only occurs twice in a season which makes it manageable for all players. The umpire co-ordinator emails a reminder to the players required to umpire on the Monday of the week they will be umpiring. This year an advanced list will be made available on the Naenae Hockey website as soon as practical after the draw is published so you can plan ahead!  Last year there was a healthy list of stand-in umpires who would cover umpiring duty for other players at $20 a game. So far our list is a little small so if umpiring is something you want to get into and you like receiving cold hard cash for enjoying your sport please flick an email to damon@naenaehockey.org. Training and support will be provided for anyone interested at an umpiring night where anyone interested can ask questions and get a better understanding of the rules of hockey.  If you are unable to umpire a match for any reason the club requires you to contact a list umpire and have them cover for you. If you do not arrange an umpire and a Naenae team is left without an umpire the player who was down to umpire will be fined. The club had to issue an outstanding number of 0 fines last year! We hope to keep that kind of record up so please be prepared, it's never a good feeling lining up for a match and then having to see a teamate take up the whistle due to an absent umpire! Each team will be issued with umpiring equipment (cards and a whistle) so you won't need to have any - just turn up and officiate. We're looking forward to another fantastic season of well umpired and successful hockey so do your bit for the success of the club.

    • Grading
      • Grading games start this weekend, is it winter already? The club's first game is the P3 women at 2.30pm at Fraser, come on down and check it out - alternatively, check out the rest of the grading draw on the draw page. On the draw page you should find the current draw for all Naenae teams as well as the umpire allocation - more on that soon!

    • New Rules for 2015
      • As we get ready for the 2015 season it's time to remind ourselves of the new rules in play for 2015. Green cards are now an automatic 2 minute stand down just like they are in international games. The time doesn't start until you are off the turf. This gives umpires a way of reducing niggle and discouraging dangerous play. Attacking free hits within 5m from the D are to be taken from where the infringement occurred (not taken back to the dotted line). The ball still has to travel 5m before being dribbled into the D or touch another players stick. Defensive players must be inside the circle, but do not have to be 5m from where the infringement occurred. WHA have advised their umpires to turn over the free hit if the attacking team picks the ball up and decides to play from the 5m dotted line. If the ball travels over the back line off a defender (which would have caused a long corner in the past), the attacking team take a free hit on the 25m line, in line with where the ball went out (like a 16, but 25m away and the ball is with the attacking team). Rules for taking a free hit inside the 25 still apply - the ball must travel 5m before entering the D or be touched by another players stick. The high stick rule is now to be played in both P1 and P2 grades. This means our top side can get used to catching aerial balls above the shoulder which is a key element in the top level game.If you're a player or an umpire it will pay to be familiar with these so you can keep up a fast paced game and take advantage of unwary players.
