A celebration at Unity Books, and other favourite places

- Wednesday will be a day of celebration at Unity Books in Willis Street, marking the end of months of renovations. Bigger! Brighter! Even better! The new Unity Books has a wider, more welcoming facade, a lot more window space to entice pedestrians to stop, and a lot more space for browsing and buying.

The main road runs through Newtown, but the criticism is about a traffic island

- The main streets of Newtown are being converted into State Highway One for four nights every week from now till the end of the year, while the NZ Transport Agency is closing the Mt Victoria tunnel for repairs. But it wasn’t all the extra traffic that upset Newtown locals last week – it was the Agency’s decision to remove a traffic island from Riddiford Street.

They’re wasting money on the waterfront

- The Wellington City Council will today be deciding to spend money preparing to review its ten-year-old waterfront framework. The council will be wasting the money. It’s planning to ask questions to which it already knows the answers. There’s no need for a review.

Things to come on the harbour’s edge

- Amongst all the details of new roads and ramps and car parks, there’s some enthusiasm about cycling and walking in the Regional Council’s new ten-year plan for transport from Ngauranga to Te Marua. In particular, there’s a strong recommendation for a good quality cycling and walking route between Ngauranga and Petone. Regional Council chair Fran Wilde says it is one of the major projects in the plan.
